Irene Gamez

DEERFIELD -- Irene Gamez, 76, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born July 28, 1923, in Durango, Mexico, the daughter of Juan and Beatrice Garcia, and lived most of her life in Ciudad Acuna Coah, Mexico. Mrs. Gamez moved to Deerfield in 1999, where she enjoyed spending time with her son and his family and gardening.

In 1939, she married Cayetano Gamez in Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sons, Jesus and Roberto; and a daughter, Marie Elena.

Survivors include her son, Juan Gamez, of Deerfield; her daughter, Ma-Luisa Mendoza of Mexico; 10 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.

A vigil will take place at 7 p.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin. A rosary will follow.

Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony, with Mike Helms presiding. Burial will be at Deerfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin.

Manuel Garcia

Manuel Garcia, 89, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, in his Garden City home.

Born June 1, 1911, to Cipriano and Refugia (Perez) Garcia in Mexico City, he moved with his parents to Garden City when he was 5 years old.

He married Phyllis Pichardo on Feb. 18, 1933, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. She and his parents preceded him in death.

Mr. Garcia worked as an auto body repairman at Burtis Motors for 35 years. He also worked at Farmland as a security guard and at El Zarape.

He was deputized by former Finney County Sheriff Grover Craig on Dec. 17, 1970.

A member of the St. Mary Catholic Church, Mr. Garcia also was a past member of the Fiesta Committee. His hobbies included listening to music and, at one time, performing with the bands Manuel Garcia and Los Rancheros and the Aces. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include six sons, Dino Garcia, Tony Garcia and Mike Garcia, all of Garden City, Hector Garcia of Houston, Louis Garcia of Wichita and Manuel Garcia of Dallas; two daughters, Andres Flores and Ruth Jurado of Garden City; one brother, Epifanio Garcia of Garden City; one sister, Andrea Campos of Garden City; 41 grandchildren; 108 great grandchildren; and 25 great-great grandchildren.

A vigil will take place at 7:30 p.m. today, followed by a rosary, at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary, with Father James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church or the American Cancer Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Delmar E. Green

Delmar E. Green, 74, of Austin, Texas, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Lamar, Colo.

Born on Aug. 16, 1925, in Garden City, he was the son of Lee R. and Anna (Weir) Green. He graduated from Garden City High School and worked as a rancher in the area.

Mr. Green joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943 and served as a bombardier with the 838th Bomb Squadron of the 487th Bomb Group, eventually achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He has owned and operated a meat-packing plant in Leavenworth, worked as a real estate agent in Oskaloosa, and retired as a truck driver. Mr. Green rode bulls in the Midwest rodeo circuit, and was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma for his rides on the famous "bounty" bulls.

He was a member of the Lions Club, the VFW and the American Legion of Oskaloosa.

In 1970, he married Margaret Handke in Las Vegas, Nev. They later divorced.

Survivors include his ex-wife; two sons, Lee Green of Austin, Texas, and Greg Green of Littleton, Colo.; one daughter, Ann Hutchinson of Wamego; two step-sons, Brian Green of Calhan, Colo., and Ted Harvey of Oklahoma; one step-daughter, Corinne Cardona of Atchison; and three grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents; his first wife, Edna; two brothers, Bud and Curtis Green; and two sisters, Vesta and Alma.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home in Leavenworth.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion.

Maria A. Perez

ULYSSES -- Maria A. Perez, 76, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.

She was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Tina, Texas, the daughter of Jesus and Eristea (Soto) Adamez. They preceded her in death

On Aug. 28, 1948, she married Locario "Lucky" Perez in Beeville, Texas. The couple moved to Ulysses from Hollis, Okla., in 1965.

Mrs. Perez was a member of the Mary Queen of Peace Church in Ulysses.

Survivors include her husband; six sons, Richard Perez, Raul Perez, Rudy Perez and Ramiro Perez, all of Ulysses, and Ruben Perez, Liberal; three daughters, Yolanda Gonzales, Ulysses, Dora Garza, Ulysses and Viola Bronson, Boynton Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Nick Adamez, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ted Adamez, Beeville, Texas; two sisters, Trinidad Zambrano of Gregory, Texas, and Bernarda Garcia of Beeville, Texas; 26 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

John Kowal will preside over a vigil at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Mary Queen of Peace Church in Ulysses.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mary Queen of Peace Church, also with John Kowal presiding. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

J. Marie Kenyon

SCOTT CITY -- J. Marie Kenyon, 94, died Monday, June, 19, 2000, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

Born Sept. 25, 1905, in Rich Hill, Mo., the daughter of J.C. (Claude) and Maude Hancock Wood, she moved to Scott City in 1916. She was a former school teacher and later owned and operated the Kenyon Beauty Shop for 53 years, retiring in 1982.

She belonged to several Scott City organizations, including First Christian Church, the Christian Women's Fellowship, Chorus Chapter No.259 Order of the Eastern Star, Study and Social Club, the M&M Club, the VFW Auxiliary, and was a Past Worthy Matron Matron and Past District Aide OES. She was also a charter member of the Western Kansas Cosmetology Association and a Daughter of the American Revolution, belonging to the William Wilson chapter in Garden City.

She married Thomas Kenyon in Sharon Springs March 29, 1925. He died July 27, 1964.

Survivors include one son, Larry Kenyon of San Diego; one brother, Teddy G. Wood of Cherryvale, and one sister, Norma Stopher of Collinsville; along with nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two stepsons, Francis and Tom Kenyon; one stepdaughter, Oliva Evans; and four brothers, Arnold Wood, Dr. Thomas Wood, Myron Wood and Clyde Wood.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Scott City, the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
