Lucy L. Reed

Graveside service for Lucy L. Reed, 94, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Garden Valley Retirement Village, with Dr. Robert Cousins officiating.

Mrs. Reed died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Barton County, the daughter of Oswald E. and Mary E. (Miller) Shapland.

A Garden City resident since the early 1940s, moving from Dighton, she had been a sales clerk for the Woolworths Department Store in downtown Garden City for many years.

Mrs. Reed was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program at the Finney County Senior Center.

On Feb. 1, 1954, she married Richard Reed at Clovis, N.M. He died Feb. 11, 1995, in Garden City.

She is survived by a brother, Leon Shapland, Ulysses; a sister, Helen Jewett, Overland Park; and 18 nephews and nieces.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Meals on Wheels Program at the Finney County Senior Center, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Sergio Gutierrez

COOLIDGE - Sergio Gutierrez, 23, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

He was born Sept. 12, 1976, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Adalberto Gutierrez and Guadalupe Miranda. He attended school there.

A resident of the United States for five months, he had lived in Coolidge and was a farm laborer. He loved his children and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Minerva Wizar, Chihuahua; two daughters, Nisyaly Gutierrez and Bernice Gutierrez, both of Chihuahua; five brothers, Jaime Gutierrez, Hugo Gutierrez, Ramiro Gutierrez and Antonio Gutierrez, all of Chihuahua, and Cesar Gutierrez, Holly, Colo.; two sisters, Sandra Gutierrez, Cuhatemoc, Mexico, and Idal Gutierrez, Chihuahua; and his grandparents, Colmenero Miranda, Manuela Verela, Juan Gutierrez and Eloise Ontiveros.

Funeral and burial will be in Bachiniva, Chihuahua, Mexico. Friends and family are welcome to call at the home of Cesar Gutierrez in Holly.

Memorials are suggested to the Sergio Gutierrez Funeral Fund, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Robert Edward "Ed" Hesser

MONTEZUMA - Funeral for Robert Edward "Ed" Hesser, 60, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

Mr. Hesser died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, after a sudden illness.

He was born Aug. 19, 1940, at Copeland, the son of Harley E. and Oneita (Glover) Hesser.

Mr. Hesser enjoyed farming and tilling the soil, as well as working and visiting with the many people he met and spending time with his family and grandchildren. While in school, he was good in athletics. His hobbies included stock car racing and hunting.

He is survived by a son, Troy Hesser, Montezuma; a daughter, Terri Martinez, Swink, Colo.; his mother, Garden City; two sisters, Donna Shull, Union Town, and Kathy Holderness, Montezuma; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Richard Ellis Hesser; and a granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Montezuma Emergency Medical Technicians or Crooked Creek Golf Association at Montezuma, both in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Maynard McCalmont

SUBLETTE - Maynard McCalmont, 84, of Sublette, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 25, 1915, at Raton, N.M., the son of Stuart Dixon and Pearl Mamie (Krueger) McCalmont. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1934 and from Dodge City Junior College in 1937. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

On Sept. 8, 1940, he married Margaret Green at Dodge City. They moved from Wichita to Sublette in 1947. They were owners and operators of the McCalmont IGA Store there for 50 years, retiring in 1996. He helped care for his mother-in-law for five years, living in Dodge City.

Mr. McCalmont was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 205 and a lifetime member of the Rotary Club, all at Sublette. He attended his grandchildren's sports at school and rodeo events, and enjoyed working at the store and visiting with people. His hobbies included his back yard where he had a greenhouse and raised his own geraniums. He enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Tania McNabb, Sublette; two brothers, Don McCalmont, Johnson City, Tenn., and Lynn McCalmont, Las Cruces, N.M.; a sister, Margaret Von Schriltz, Duluth, Minn.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren McCalmont.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Sublette, with the Rev. Mary Al Titus officiating. Masonic graveside services will be conducted in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Youth Fellowship of Sublette, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Harriet Eyman

DEERFIELD - Funeral for Harriet Eyman, 100, who had taught first grade at Deerfield for many years, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel, Bartlesville, Okla. Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Deerfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Eyman, of Bartlesville, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Jane Phillips Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 10, 1900, at Kimeo, the daughter of Charles and Jessie (Carpenter) Knight. She grew up and received her education in the Hartford area. She graduated from Hartford High School, attended Emporia Teachers College and Colorado University, and held a lifetime teaching certificate from Kansas.

After receiving her teaching certificate, she taught the first grade at Deerfield for eight years, retiring to raise her children. In 1946, when teachers were scarce, she went back to teach there for one year and stayed for 19 years, making a total of 27 years teaching the first grade at Deerfield.

Mrs. Eyman was a life member of the Lakin chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Kansas Retired Teachers Association and the Kearny County Historical Society. She was a member of the Deerfield United Methodist Church, the Tuesday Club at Bartlesville and the Musical Research Society. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Bartlesville.

She is survived by a son, Don Eyman, Shawnee Mission; a daughter, Kathleen Ernst, Bartlesville; a brother, Clifford Knight, Pittsburg; two grandsons; three granddaughters; four great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters; one stepgreat-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Elmer R. Eyman, preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested to the Deerfield United Methodist Church, Eighth and Walnut streets, Deerfield, KS 67838.

Francis M. "Chub" Sterling,

Francis M. "Chub" Sterling, 84, a former area resident, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, Calif.

He was born July 14, 1915, at Lone Dell, Mo. He grew up near Lakin and Deerfield, and went to school in Lakin. He worked his way through barber college and that became his life's work after he left the Navy and settled in California. He lived in Ceres for 30 years and in Groveland for 25 years before moving to Modesto three years ago.

Mr. Sterling was a Ceres councilman from 1961 to 1971, and had served as deputy mayor, police commissioner and water commissioner. He also had worked as a barber at Ceres Barber Shop, which he owned for 50 years.

During his tenure on the council, the city secured the money it needed to help build Smyrna Park. He and other councilmen formed a band, the "Clodhoppers," and Mr. Sterling played the mandolin and fiddle.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a former commander of the American Legion, and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club.

He is survived by his children, Larry Sterling, Ceres, and Arthur Sterling, Bothell, Wash.; his sisters, Anna Lewis and Mary Jones, both of Topeka, Martha Ellis, Thornton, Colo., and Ester Graham, Silver Spring, Md.; and one grandchild.

A memorial service took place June 28 at Evins Funeral Home, Modesto. Private inurnment was in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, 3313 N. Hillard Lane, Fresno, CA 93726.

Jose Alfredo Saenz

Jose Alfredo Saenz, 19, of Garden City, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Gray County.

He was born June 16, 1981, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Epitacio Saenz and Cruz Chavira. A Garden City resident for three months, moving from Chihuahua, he was a carpenter.

Survivors include his parents, Chihuahua; five brothers, Alonso, Victor, Eduardo, Oswvaldo and Luis, all of Chihuahua; three sisters, Lourdes Saenz, Francis Saenz and Nohemi Saenz, all of Chihuahua; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral is planned for later in Chihuahua.

Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, is in charge of arrangements.
