Gracie Viola Austin

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Gracie Viola Austin, 87, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hill City United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mehl Cruit officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Wilson City Cemetery.

Mrs. Austin died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at her home in Scott City.

She was born Dec. 3, 1913, in Russell County, the daughter of Joseph and Letitia B. (Evans) Luder.

A longtime resident of Hill City, she moved to Scott City in November 1999. She had been a teacher and a homemaker and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hill City and also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma.

On April 16, 1938, she married Arthur A. Austin at Wilson. He died Jan. 1, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two children, two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Eric Austin, Hays, Norman Austin, Topeka, and Arthur W. Austin, Alamogordo, N.M.; a daughter, Marilyn Dryer, Scott City; a sister, Rachel Wurm, Oberlin; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Gracie V. Austin Memorial Fund or United Methodist Youthville, both in care of Spencer-Stinemetz Chapel of Hill City, 522 N. Pomeroy St., Hill City, KS 67642.

Isabel Kathryn Gerstberger

LEOTI - Vigil service for Isabel Kathryn Gerstberger, 73, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Mrs. Gerstberger died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

She was born Nov. 26, 1927, at Garden City, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Billinger) Herman. She was a graduate of Holcomb High School.

A homemaker, she had been a Wichita County resident since 1948. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and the Kansas Cattlewomens Association and was a 4-H leader in Wichita County.

On Feb. 3, 1948, she married Elmer Gerstberger at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Kenneth, Leoti; three daughters, Juanita Jameson, Garden City, Jacqulyn Krueger, Hays, and Donna Fletcher, Mission Viejo, Calif.; two brothers, Richard Herman, Garden City, and D.A. Herman, Broken Arrow, Okla.; a sister, Eleanor Kreutzer, Garden City; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to Wichita County Hospital or Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, both in care of the funeral home.

Jesus Guerrero

HUGOTON - Rosary for Jesus Guerrero, 96, of Hugoton, was 5:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Helen Catholic Church, Hugoton. Funeral Mass was to be 10:30 this morning at the church, with the Rev. Gilbert Herrman officiating. Burial was to be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mr. Guerrero died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Manor of the Plains, Dodge City, where he had been a resident for seven months.

He was born Nov. 12, 1904, at Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Mexico, the son of Linion and Maria (Carra) Guerrero.

A Hugoton resident for 60 years, moving from Johnson City, he worked as a section foreman for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

He was married for 12 years to Mauela Olivarez, whom he married in 1929 at Dodge City. She preceded him in death. He then married Antoina Gomez at Hugoton. They were married for 52 years. She also preceded him in death as did his parents; two sons, Manuel Guerrero and Junior Guerrero; a daughter, Elvira Medina; two grandsons; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Guerrero enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by a son, Joe B. Guerrero, Hugoton; five daughters, Mary Romero and Josie Orosco, both of Hugoton, Rosie Sandoval, Susie Medina and Mary Jane Lopez, all of Dodge City; 27 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Helen Catholic Church Sign Fund or MSGR Hussman Learning Center at Hugoton, both in care of Paul's Funeral Home, 314 S. Van Buren St., Hugoton, KS 67951.

Martina M. Burkhart

Rosary for Martina M. Burkhart, 80, of Spearville, was 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, Spearville, with vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Funeral Mass was to be 10:30 this morning at the church, with the Rev. Robert A. Schremmer officiating. Burial was to be in St. Johns Cemetery, Spearville.

Mrs. Burkhart died Friday, April 20, 2001, at her home.

She was born Sept. 9, 1920, at Munjor, the daughter of Alex and Margaret (Pfannensteil) Hertel.

A Spearville area resident for more than 50 years, she was a homemaker. She belonged to St. John The Baptist Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

On Aug. 12, 1941, she married William G. "Bill" Burkhart at Offerle. He survives. She is also survived by seven sons, Donald, Goddard, Gary Lee, Jetmore, Allen, of Wright, Norman, of Langdon, Thomas, Cimarron, and Mark and Roger, both of Spearville; four daughters, Patricia Jane Grasser, Garden City, Elaine Gerber, Garden Plain, Connie Lou Burgardt, Pratt, and Mary Linda Strecker, Spearville; a brother, Eddie Hertel, Dodge City; three sisters, Regina Dome and Agnes Beckerdite ,both of Dodge City, and Mary Ann Dinkel, Victoria; 34 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ed, Alfred, Wilferd and Joe.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Spearville Emergency Medical Services, both in care of Burkhart Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

James Edward Smith Sr.

James Edward Smith Sr., 72, of Larned, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Larned.

He was born March 29, 1929, at Larned, the son of William Edward and Florence (Dipman) Smith.

A longtime resident of Larned, he was a retired refrigeration and heating technician at Larned State Hospital and a mechanic for the Department of Transportation at Garden City. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Fort Larned Lions Club.

On Nov. 1, 1950, he married Virginia L. Woelk at Albert. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Gregory L., James E. "Bub" Jr., and Steven K., all of Larned; three daughters, Julie M. Atteberry and Debra G. Harbert, both of Larned, and Sheri L. Smith, Olathe; three brothers, Gary, Doug and Curtis, all of Larned; two sisters, Patsy Mull, Great Bend, and Sara Smith, St. John; 21 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Hamilton.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, Larned, with the Rev. John Drosendahl officiating. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday, and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned. Memorials are suggested to the church or Larned Emergency Medical Service, both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 124, Larned, KS 67550-0124.

R. Baxter Appel

SCOTT CITY - Vigil prayer service for R. Baxter Appel, 46, will be 7 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with extra seating available in the parish hall with video and sound provided. The Rev. David Kraus will officiate. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Appel died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at his home in Scott City.

He was born May 15, 1954, at Scott City, the son of Robert Kenneth and Thelma Elaine (Baxter) Appel.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was the owner and operator of Appel Sheet Metal. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph's Parish Council.

On April 9, 1983, he married Pamela M. Gimler at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Jacob Appel and Joel Appel, and a daughter, Miranda Appel, all of Scott City; two brothers, Brian Appel, Scott City, and Nathan Appel, Dodge City; and four sisters, Robyn Brady, Littleton, Colo., Melodee Ramey, May, Okla., Lark Speer and Denise Akers, both of Scott City. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Baxter Appel Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Dara A. Meyers

DEERFIELD - Dara A. Meyers, 67, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Lea Regional Medical Center in Hobbs, N.M.

He was born March 25, 1934, at Mountainberg, Ark., the son of Grant and Lula (Smith) Meyers. He lived in Mountainberg until moving to Eunice, N.M., in 1951. He was employed by Tex-New Mexico Pipeline for 37 years and was a Scoutmaster for several years. A gem and rock enthusiast, he enjoyed traveling after his retirement.

In 1960, he married Glenda Rowe.

He is survived by a son, Dara Wayne "Chip" Meyers, Eunice; two grandchildren; six brothers, Grant Meyers Jr., Glenn Meyers, Leland Meyers, David Meyers and Donald Meyers, all of Deerfield, and Dale Meyers, Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Ida Bolton, Deerfield, Anetta Meyers, Lakin, and Martha Langley, Phoenix; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Linda and Shirley; two infant daughters; and an infant son.

No service is planned. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Calvary Funeral Home in Eunice.
