Ruby May Arnold

Johnson CITY - Funeral for Ruby May Arnold, 97, was to be 10:30 this morning at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial was to follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Mrs. Arnold died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City.

She was born Oct. 30, 1904, in Kingfisher County, Okla., the daughter of Samuel L. and Mattie Shively Long.

A Johnson City resident since 1930, formerly of Beaver County, Okla., she was a homemaker. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and the Mothers Club, was a charter member of the Stanton County Extension Unit and was a former 4-H leader. A seamstress, she also enjoyed gardening and china painting.

On March 16, 1930, she married Glen Y. Arnold in Beaver County. He died April 23, 1993. She was also preceded in death by a twin sister, Ruth Swart; and a brother, Clifford Long.

Survivors include two sons, Richard and Earl Arnold, both of Johnson City; a daughter, Pearl Hershberger, Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Roy Long, Anderson, Ind.; a sister, Hattie Abbott, Oklahoma City; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or Stanton County Long Term Care Unit, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Lee Hebrlee

He was born Sept. 29, 1916, at LaVerne, Okla., the son of Ed and Molly Peebly Hebrlee. The family moved to southwest Kansas when he was young. He grew up in Garden City and attended schools here.

Mr. Hebrlee owned and operated Lee Hebrlee Trucking Co. for 19 years and also worked at Sentry Security for 13 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City and helped with the Army Corp of Engineers at the time when John Martin Reservoir was built. He enjoyed rodeo and horses.

On May 29, 1940, he married Bonnie Ruth Smith at Cimarron. She died March 18, 1998. He also was preceded in death by an infant son and a sister, Eva Marie Cross.

He is survived by a daughter, Marianne Remschner, Garden City; three sons, Bud Hebrlee, Albuquerque, N.M., Mike Hebrlee, Casper, Wyo., and Bill Hebrlee, Holcomb; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Private family graveside service will precede the funeral.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Amanda Gail Nash

Memorial service for Amanda Gail Nash, 19, of Larned, will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned. Lee Bird, minister, will officiate. Cremation has taken place.

Miss Nash died Saturday, May 25, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Rozel.

She was born March 10, 1983, at Elkhart, the daughter of Roger and Brenda Sue Caldwell Nash.

A Larned resident since August 2000, moving from Garden City, she was a cook for the Larned State Hospital main cafeteria.

She is survived by her father and stepmother, Roger and Laura Nash, Larned; her mother, Brenda Sue Copeland, Cookeville, Tenn.; a sister, Susan Sentel, Sparta, Tenn.; and two stepbrothers, Randall Wesley and Clifton Wade Rodriguez, both of the home.

Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society Inc., in care of the funeral home.

John William Wydick

DIGHTON - Funeral for John William Wydick, 72, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Ness City.

Mr. Wydick died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his home in Dighton.

He was born June 22, 1929, at Jasper, Mo., the son of Clark and Vida Buzzard Wydick, and grew up there.

Mr. Wydick was a mechanic, worked in the circus, worked in the gold mines in Nevada and was a restaurant owner before moving to Dighton in 1985 and going to work for the Lane County Road Department. He retired in 1997. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing and traveling.

On April 21, 1969, he married Esther Dechant at Hutchinson. She survives. He also is survived by a son, John Robert Wydick, Nampa, Idaho; two daughters, Mary Sevy, Nampa, and Karen Britton, Ellsworth; two stepsons, Darrell Dechant, Hays, and Ronald Dechant, Dighton; six sisters, Faye Shaw, LaVada Jones, Martha Miller and Vida Lee Anderson, all of Auburn, Wash., Edith Taylor, Carthage, Mo., and Shirley Newport, Wichita; three brothers, Frank Wydick, Columbus, Albert E. Wydick, Federal Way, Wash., and Lonnie Wydick, Cherokee; 14 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, three brothers, one stepdaughter and one stepgrandchild.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Shirley R. Peterson

Funeral for Shirley R. Peterson, 49, of Kansas City, Mo., was to be 2 p.m. today at Platte Woods (Mo.) United Methodist Church. A second service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakley United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in Oakley Cemetery.

Mrs. Peterson died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Liberty (Mo.) Hospital.

She was born Aug. 3, 1952, at Oakley.

Mrs. Peterson did her undergraduate work at Fort Hays State University and earned a master's degree in education from Wichita State University. She was a fifth-grade teacher at English Landing Elementary School in the Park Hill school district and was an active member of Platte Woods United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Bertha Joseph, Oakley; a son, Nicholas Peterson, and a daughter, Ashley Peterson, both of the home; three sisters, Diane Miller and Sharon Campbell, both of Greeley, Colo., and Marjie Clarke, Garden City; and a brother, Bradley Joseph, Oakley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald R. "Pete" Peterson; her father, Donne Joseph; and a sister, Donna Jean Joseph.

Memorials are suggested to the Shirley Peterson Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Heritage Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Parkville, MO 64152.

Jerry L. Cook

DIGHTON - Funeral for Jerry L. Cook, 97, was to be 10:30 this morning at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial was to be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton.

Mr. Cook died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton.

He was born May 21, 1905, at Weatherford, Okla., the son of Lewis and Minnie Blackney Cook.

After attending school in Osage City, he built ponds with a bulldozer and sold cars. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. After his discharge, he worked at the Boeing plant as a welder and an assembler. He later worked as a custom harvester, cutting wheat in Lane County. He moved to Lane County in 1948 and became a lifelong farmer in Lane and Finney counties.

Mr. Cook was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and on the administrative council. He was a former director of the Lane County Farm Bureau and belonged to American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton. His special interests were gardening, cooking and his farm activities.

On Oct. 27, 1941, he married Jean Kuykendall at Parsons. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Jay Cook, Garden City; a daughter, Claudette Campbell, Parker, Colo.; a sister, Stella Gamba, Osage City; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

Damin Ryan Way

Graveside service for Damin Ryan Way, the infant son of Angie Raison and Scott Way of Ponca City, Okla., will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Babyland Section of Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, Ponca City, with Darin S. Corder officiating.

Damin was born Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center in Ponca City and died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Dillon Raison, of the home; and his grandparents, Kathy Gleason, Ionia, Mich., Pauline Way, Meade, and Kenneth Way, Garden City.

The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Trout Funeral Home, Ponca City.

Norban B. Nevens

Norban B. Nevens, 97, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

The son of Sandy and Ella Nevens, he was born April 19, 1905, in Logan County, where he grew up, attended school and graduated from high school.

In the late 1940s, he moved to Garden City where he worked at Porter's Lumber Co., retiring in the early 1980s. He was a member of Garden City Church of God in Christ, where he served as a deacon and bookkeeper. He enjoyed fixing various things.

On Sept. 29, 1964, he married Ethel M. Johnson at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Charlene A. Bradshaw, Denver; three sisters, Pamona McPherson, Scott City, Bernice Jones, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Theda Bell, Los Angeles; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merle and Alex Nevens; and a sister, Clydee Lester.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Paul Bradshaw, elder, will officiate. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Garden City Church of God in Christ, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Lela M. Boone

DIGHTON - Lela M. Boone, 94, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Life Care Center of Longmont, Colo. She was born May 17, 1908, at Amy, the daughter of Clarence and Gertrude Bruner Smith. She attended Amy Grade School and Dighton High School.

In 1961, she moved to Longmont. After attending beauty school in Denver, she was a beautician for 23 years for Frasier Meadows Manor in Boulder, Colo. After retirement, she continued to work from her home.

Mrs. Boone was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Longmont. Her special interests were sewing, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, and baking from scratch. She was also known to make her own soap for doing laundry.

On Jan. 20, 1929, she married Roy Boone at Great Bend. He preceded her in death as did her parents; two brothers, Floyd and Vinton Smith; two sisters, Velma Seward and Mary Nitz; and a granddaughter.

She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Hale and Mary Jane Boone, both of Longmont, and Norma Jean Clark, Cimarron; a sister, Estelene Child, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Kenneth Smith, Pampa, Texas, and Roland Smith, Clovis, Calif.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton, with the Rev. Richard Deimund officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation or Faith Baptist Church, both in care of the funeral home, 145 N. Wichita, Dighton, KS 67839.
