Michael Zerr Sr.

Parish wake service for Michael Zerr Sr., 87, of Norton, was 7 p.m. July 1 at Enfield Funeral Home, Norton. Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. July 2 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton, with the Rev. Mark Berland officiating. Burial was in Alma (Neb.) Cemetery.

Mr. Zerr died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at his home in Norton.

He was born Dec. 17, 1914, at Park, the son of Adam M. and Josephine Baumann Zerr. He attended rural grade school in Park, high school in Hoxie and also attended Hutchinson Business Institute.

On May 25, 1937, he married Thelma Johnson at Grainfield. Throughout their marriage, they made their home in Hoxie, Grainfield, Atlanta, Hays, Norton and Almena where he was engaged in farming and also drove a school bus.

His wife died July 28, 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three children, Mary Jane, Robert and Michael Jr.; a son-in-law; three brothers, Adam Jr., Peter and George; and two sisters, Elizabeth "Sis" Pfannenstiel and Barbara Dickman.

Mr. Zerr joined the Park Knights of Columbus in 1943 and was a Grand Knight. He also belonged to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton, had served on school and township boards, and was Democratic chairman of northwest Kansas.

He is survived by a daughter, Ramona Pabian, Norton; three sons, Dennis Zerr, Lexington, Neb., Fred Zerr, Ravenna, Neb., and Adam Zerr, Norton; a daughter-in-law, Deb Zerr of Alma; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Paul Zerr, Grainfield, Martin Zerr, Garden City, and Ludwig Zerr, Hays; and three sisters, Helen Urban, Topeka, Josephine Tatro, Garden City, and Rose Uhrich, Norton.

Margaret B. Jellison

Funeral for Margaret B. Jellison, 73, of Hays, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Hays, with the Revs. Delbert Stanton and William C. Miller officiating. Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Hunter.

Mrs. Jellison died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born March 10, 1929, at Hays, the daughter of H. Ray and Grace Dunckley Brown. She graduated from Osborne High School in 1947 and from Fort Hays State University in 1951.

Mrs. Jellison taught school in Tribune, Scott City and Garden City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Hays Medical Center Auxiliary, Chapter BQ P.E.O. Club, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and the American Association of University Women. She was a former Girl Scout leader, had managed the Hays Medical Center Auxiliary Gift Shop from March 10, 1987, until Jan. 31, 1997, and had taught Sunday School.

She and her husband, Billy D. Jellison, whom she married Aug. 28, 1949, at Osborne, were active in the Stroke Support Group as she was his caregiver for eight years after his stroke. They were also active in fund-raising for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association, and she had donated her corneas at the time of her death.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Katherine Jellison, Millfield, Ohio, and Sandra Jellison-Knock, Healy; a grandson; and a brother, Robert D. Brown, Palo Cedro, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 7 tonight at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Hays. Memorials are suggested to the Fort Hays State University Student Loan Fund, 610 Park, Hays, KS 67601.

Virginia N. Trujillo

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Virginia N. Trujillo, 69, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. Ed Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Trujillo died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Dec. 26, 1932, at Saguache, Colo., the daughter of Felix and Mable Romero Maez.

A Scott City resident since 1950, moving from Saguache, she was a waitress and belonged to the Faith Christian Center.

On Sept. 10, 1949, she married Arnold Trujillo at Saguache. He died July 19, 1979, at Scott City. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Fred; a brother; and a sister.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Trujillo, Scott City, and Jay Trujillo, Yuma, Ariz.; two daughters, Katy Daniels, Scott City, and Shelly Ruiz, Garden City; a sister, Lupe Dominguez, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials to the Virginia Trujillo Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Jennie Belle Unruh

MONTEZUMA - Jennie Belle Unruh, 78, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.

She was born Jan. 15, 1924, in McPherson County, the daughter of Dan J. and Eva Jantz Unruh.

On Jan. 25, 1942, she married Clayton Unruh at Galva. They moved from McPherson County to the Copeland area Aug. 14, 1968.

A homemaker, Mrs. Unruh worked for more than 40 years as a nurse's aide, including 22 years at Satanta District Hospital, and also worked as an assistant lab technician. She was a member of Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland.

She is survived by four sons, Gerald and Larry Unruh, both of Hartley, Texas, Ron Unruh, Deerfield, and LeRoy Unruh, Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Marlys Esau, Montezuma, and Flora Martin, Ulysses; two brothers, Sidney Unruh, Moundridge, and Curtis Unruh, Galva; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Her husband died July 23, 1992. She also was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Dennis Unruh; a brother, Brinton Unruh, and a sister, Nancy Becker.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland. Sam Unruh Jr., Steve Unruh, Verle Yost and Charles Johnson, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery, Copeland.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Lila M. Cammack

Lila M. Cammack, 91, of Perry, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

She was born July 15, 1910, at Ipswich, S.D., the daughter of Eugene and Zilla Carver Bucklin. She lived in Bayard, Iowa, from early childhood until moving to Perry in 1929.

Mrs. Cammack was the director of nurses at King's Daughter's Hospital and Dallas County Hospital in Perry for many years. She belonged to First Christian Church, Loyal Ladies, Eastern Star, Kings Daughter's, Dallas County Hospital Auxiliary and the Dallas County Board of Health.

On Dec. 31, 1944, she married Kirk Cammack at Perry. He preceded her in death as did her parents and three brothers.

She is survived by a son, Roger Cammack, Garden City; a daughter, Judy Carr, LuVerne, Iowa; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Murdock Funeral Home, Perry, with the Rev. Loren Diddy officiating. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry.

Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home, 1420 Warford Street, Perry, IA 50220.

Elmer 'Jiggs' Crowley

DIGHTON - Funeral for Elmer W. "Jiggs" Crowley, 93, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Ben Friesen officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton.

Mr. Crowley died Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton.

He was born Aug. 11, 1908, at Vibbard, Mo., the son of John Christopher and Martha Ann O'Donnell Crowley. At the age of 8, he came to live with Elmer Ellsworth and Oma (Crawley) Peck in Dighton. He attended school there, graduating from Dighton High School. He also attended Sterling College and Emporia Teacher's College, where he played football.

Mr. Crowley served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was a member of the Army Reserves, retiring in 1968 as Master Sergeant. He also belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 646 for 65 years, serving time as president, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 190 and VFW Post No. 7773. A masonry, he retired from his work in 1978. He enjoyed tending his large garden and being with his grandchildren.

On Dec. 7, 1945, he married Pauline Faye Lofland at St. John. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Doris Lee Iarossi, Topeka; four sons, Ellsworth Crowley, Amarillo, Texas, W. Leon Crowley, Mobridge, S.D., Gary and Kim Crowley, both of Dighton; a sister, Esther Grady, Armand Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents; five brothers, Clarence, Earl, Hubert, Lester and Forest Crowley; and three sisters, Lena Smith, Goldie Crowley and Lucy Katherine Doris.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials to the Elmer W. Crowley Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Dean DeFord

Dean DeFord, 91, a former Garden City resident, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his home in Pratt.

He was born March 7, 1911, at Windom, the son of Clarence and Blanche Frankeberger DeFord. He attended school in Little River and Jetmore.

Mr. DeFord's relatives were pioneers of Kansas, some of whom were here in 1856, settling first in Douglas, Franklin and McPherson counties before moving to Ford County. He lived his entire life in Ford and Finney counties before moving from Garden City to Pratt in 1966. He was a retired farmer, cattleman and custom combiner, a 50-year member of Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 0282 in Jetmore and was of the Methodist faith.

On June 15, 1930, he married Mildred D. Brown at Dodge City. She died June 9, 1999. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul; a sister, Verna Warden; and a grandson.

Survivors include a son, Don, Dickinson, Texas; two daughters, Carolee Webster, Pratt, and Joyce Schanel, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Doris Brown, Scottsdale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore, with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. It will be followed by visitation and dinner for family and friends at the United Methodist Church, Jetmore.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt. Memorials are suggested to South Wind Hospice, in care of the mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, KS 67124.

Cheryl Leah Heeke

Cheryl Leah Heeke, 42, of Flagstaff, Ariz., died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.

Born in Garden City on Oct. 6, 1959, she was the daughter of Owen G. and Rose Schiffelbein Heeke. She grew up in Garden City and attended schools here.

A resident of Flagstaff since 1984, she enjoyed plants, gardening and animals and especially loved taking care of her dog, Pyro, and her three cats.

She is survived by three brothers, Duane Heeke, Garden City, Richard Heeke, Yukon, Okla., and Kenneth Heeke, Carona, Calif.; two sisters, Carleen Heeke, Tucson, Ariz., and Lori Welch, Garden City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral was June 26 at a Catholic church in Flagstaff. Private family burial will take place later.

Memorials to the Cheryl Heeke Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
