Gene Hitt

Vigil service for Gene Hitt, 75, of Pratt, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pratt. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Jim Dieker officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt.

Mr. Hitt died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Pratt Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 27, 1927, at Quinter, the son of Joseph E. and Charlotte E. Rhea Hitt.

A Pratt resident since 1961, moving from Grinnell, he was a retired game warden for Kansas Wildlife & Parks (formerly Kansas Fish & Game). He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge and the VFW, all at Pratt, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the South Pacific from 1945 to 1948. He was active in local law enforcement and was an avid sportsman.

On Jan. 14, 1952, he married Rita E. Struckhoff at Grinnell. She survives. He also is survived by four sons, Raymond and Pat, both of Pratt, Joe, Wichita, and Jeff, Garden Plain; four daughters, Leanne Irsik, Garden City, Rhonda Westerhaus and Becky Eastes, both of Pratt, and Nancy Schwarz of Angelus; an aunt; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kent Lee Hitt.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Church Capital Improvement Fund or the Gene Hitt Kansas Department Wildlife Parks Memorial, both in care of the mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, KS 67124.

David Ralph Rider

ULYSSES - Vigil service for David Ralph Rider, 48, will be 7 tonight at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Louis Hoang officiating. Burial will follow in Shockey Cemetery, Ulysses.

Mr. Rider died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 23, 1954, at Ulysses, the son of George Ralph and Alice Marie Doerr Rider.

A lifetime resident of Ulysses, he was a farmer, an assistant manager at Bultman Inc., and assistant fire chief for the Grant County Fire Department where he had been a member for eight years.

Mr. Rider was a member of Mary Queen Of Peace Catholic Church, president of the Men's Monday Night Bowling League, and also belonged to the Friday Night League. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

On Sept. 3, 1976, he married Carol Adams at Ulysses. She survives. He also is survived by his mother, two sons, Shawn and Seth Rider, a daughter, Heather Zerr, and three sisters, Kathy Goff, Janet Curl and Mari Honstead, all of Ulysses; and one stepgrandchild. He was preceded in death by his father; and his father- and mother-in-law.

Visitation hours are until 5 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Firemans Association or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Richard 'Raymond' Ehmke

Richard "Raymond" Ehmke, 85, of Coffeyville, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 10, 1917, at Amy, the son of Henry and Dorothea Sharonbeck Ehmke. He attended schools in Lane County.

On April 4, 1945, he married Eva Delilah Thomas at Denver. After their marriage, they lived in Dighton where he farmed with his brothers and was a Lane County champion shocker. They later owned and operated Chapel Lane Motel in Dighton for 35 years.

His wife died Dec. 18, 1988. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Phillip, in 2001; two brothers, Herman and August "Buster" Ehmke; and a sister, Alice Reifschneider.

Mr. Ehmke had been a resident of Windsor Place since moving to Coffeyville in 1998. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Dighton and later belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Coffeyville.

He is survived by three daughters, Teresa Ehmke, Dighton, Joyce Baker and Christina Ehmke, both of Garden City; a daughter-in-law; a brother, Charles Ehmke, Lake Charles, La.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ehmke's body has been donated to the KU Medical Center.

A memorial service is planned for later in Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Epilepsy Foundation or Windsor Place, both in care of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Service, Coffeyville.

Eathel LaVelle Wright

Eathel LaVelle Wright, 79, a former Garden City resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002.

She was born Nov. 15, 1923, at Blackwell, Okla. She graduated from Blackwell/Ponca High School.

In 1941, she married Robert Joseph "Bob" Wright. While her husband was serving during World War II, she was at home with her son. She spent the days inspecting fighter planes at Boeing in Wichita and the evenings playing basketball in the Women's Professional Basketball League.

She lived in Garden City for 50 years and had recently moved to Cherrywood Village Retirement Community in Portland, Ore. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Garden City Electrical and Power, and was a member of the Garden City Country Cub, the Ladies Lunch Bunch and many other clubs.

Her husband died in 1997. She also was preceded in death by a son, Joe Bob Wright.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Ryan A. Wright, Travis A. Wright, Denise R. Wright and Christian Love R. Wright.

A memorial gathering is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Cherrywood Village.

Memorials are suggested to the Eathel Wright Nurses Scholarship Fund at Garden City Community College, 801 Campus Drive, Garden City, KS 67846.

Gable Funeral Chapel, Portland, is in charge of arrangements.

Hugh Allen Beitler

Hugh Allen Beitler, 77, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Oct. 25, 1925, at St. John, the son of John and May Keeler Beitler. He grew up in St. John and attended schools there.

On July 28, 1946, he married Helen E. Allen at Great Bend. They lived in Stafford County until moving to Garden City in 1967. While living in Stafford County, he worked as a farmer. After moving to Garden City, he worked in the oil fields for Post and Brown.

Mr. Beitler was a member of Church of Christ, Garden City. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

His wife died March 15, 2000. He also was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Johnson and Muriel Beitler, both of Garden City; a brother, Frank Beitler, Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Darrell Rains officiating.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Church of Christ, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Joey Mosqueda

CIMARRON - Funeral for Joey Mosqueda, 19, was to be 2 p.m. today at Derby Friends Church, followed by burial in El Paso Cemetery, Derby.

Mr. Mosqueda died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Dodge City.

He was born Feb. 26, 1983, at Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Charles Jose and Laurie Lynn Petersen Mosqueda. He graduated from Cimarron High School in 2001 and was a student at Dodge City Community College. He was studying mechanics and body work and planned to return to Derby after receiving his degree. He attended Cimarron Nazarene Church and Derby Friends Church.

He is survived by his parents, Derby; his girlfriend, Melissa Rothgeb, Cimarron; three brothers, Richard Mosqueda, Garden City, Josh Mosqueda of Rock, and Charles Jose "C.J." Mosqueda II, Derby; three sisters, Traci Smith, Sheyboygan, Wis., Rebbecca Bolton and Theresa Mosqueda, both of Derby; his grandparents, Melvin and Doris Petersen, Council Bluffs, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials are suggested to Derby Friends Church, 1034 N. Woodlawn, Derby, KS 67037, or the Joey Mosqueda Memorial Fund, in care of Prairie State Bank, P.O. Box 187, Rose Hill, KS 67133.

Smith Mortuary, Derby, was in charge of arrangements.

Duane G. Hendershot

Vigil service for Duane G. Hendershot, 77, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by Garden City Area Veterans.

Mr. Hendershot died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born March 23, 1925, at Hill City, the son of Cory Nile and Norean E. Graham Hendershot. The family moved to Garden City when he was a child.

Mr. Hendershot worked at Adams Service for 10 years, then at Geier Electric for 31 years and at Acra Plant for 10 years, retiring in 1995. During World War II, he had served in the U.S. Army from October 1943 to March 1946. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, Senior Center of Finney County and AARP. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking and sports.

On Oct. 27, 1952, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Broeckelman at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Michael Hendershot, Casper, Wyo., and Timothy Hendershot, Holcomb; a daughter, Debra Ann Danler, Lakin; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Alan Hendershot; two sisters, Maurena Mills and Katie Falke; and an infant brother.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Hazel Belle Hummel

ULYSSES - Vigil service for Hazel Belle Hummel, 102, of Ulysses, will be 7 tonight at Mary Queen Of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Louis Trung Dinh Hoang officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mrs. Hummel died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

She was born Jan. 16, 1900, in Ness County, the daughter of John and Sarah Ellen Woolard Schamaun.

In 1916, she married Henry H. Hertel at Hanston. He died in 1946. She married Adam J. Hummel on Jan. 12, 1955, at Jetmore. He died in September 1982. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Gladys Meier; five brothers, John, Charlie, Casper, Harry and George Schamaun; and a sister, Myrtle Merryfield. She is survived by a daughter, Floadene Hertel of Ulysses.

A homemaker, she had worked as a cook in Sublette before moving to Ulysses in 1948 and working as head cook at Ralsmore Cafe from 1948 to 1954. She was a member of Mary Queen Of Peace Catholic Church at Ulysses and had been active in the Catholic Church at Hanston when she lived there.

Mrs. Hummel had lived in rural Burdett before moving to Ulysses in 1994 to live with her daughter. She moved into the Western Prairie Care Home Aug. 25, 2000. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed cooking, raising a garden, flowers and caring for animals.

Visitation hours are until 5 p.m. today at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.
