Arcadio Banda

HOLCOMB - Vigil service for Arcadio Banda, 96, of Great Bend, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery.

Mr. Banda died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, Great Bend.

He was born Jan. 12, 1906, at Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, the son of Prajedis and Candelania Banda.

A retired farmer, he had lived in Great Bend since 1988, moving from Mexico. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

His wife, Beatrice Angviano Banda, died in 1988. He also was preceded in death by two sons, Manuel and Eduardo Banda; three brothers, Francisco, Pedro and Augustine Banda; and a sister, Petra Banda.

He is survived by two sons, Antonio and Francisco "Pancho" Banda, both of Holcomb; two daughters, Olivia "Petra" Banda Garcia and Paula Banda, both of Great Bend; 26 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, KS 67530.

Blanche G. Chab Novy

Blanche G. Chab Novy, 93, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at her son's home in Wichita.

She was born March 24, 1909, on a farm north of Dewitt, Neb., the daughter of Ludvik and Emma Borecky Chab. After graduating from Swanton (Neb.) High School, she started teaching in rural schools in Saline County and was a primary room teacher in Swanton. In 1955, she graduated from Garden City Junior College and proceeded to finish her degree at the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1961 with a bachelor's degree.

On Aug. 17, 1933, she married Frank J. Novy at Fairbury, Neb. They lived on a farm west of Wilbur, Neb., until moving to Western, Neb., in 1940. In 1944, they relocated to Friend. She taught elementary education for several years in Friend and Scott City.

Mrs. Novy enjoyed the accomplishments of her students, her garden of flowers, and fishing adventures throughout Kansas, Nebraska and Canada. She also enjoyed rock hunting, joining the local rock club and making tables and jewelry.

Her husband died Sept. 25, 2002. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Elmer, Glen and Alvin; a son, Marvin D. Novy; and a granddaughter.

Survivors include a sister, Alice Andrew; two sons, Frank E. Novy, Wichita, and Lowell L. Novy, Simi, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Zajicek Funeral Home, Wilbur.

Bruce G. Whitham

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Bruce G. Whitham, 76, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Whitham died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Dec. 21, 1925, at his parent's ranch home at Beaver Beach in Scott County, the son of Ray Charles and Mable Garvin Whitham.

Mr. Whitham had been a Scott County resident until moving to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1979. He returned to Scott City in 1994. He was a retired carpenter, farmer and stockman.

He was a member of First Christian Church, VFW Post No. 7773, Anthem Masonic Lodge, VIP Center and Men's Christian Fellowship, all at Scott City. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served from 1946 to 1947, during the occupation of Japan.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Nash, Rockford, Ill., and Jane Harding, Liberal; a brother, Charles Whitham, Leoti; a sister, Corinne Krebs, Scott City; a grandson; and three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Bruce Whitham; and a brother, Frank Whitham.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.

Elsie A. Martinez

ULYSSES - Vigil service and rosary for Elsie A. Martinez, 61, of Liberal, will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Liberal, preceded by the welcoming of the body at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Patrick Keyes officiating. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.

Mrs. Martinez died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Jan. 12, 1941, at Meade, the daughter of William and Avelina Serrato Delgado. She graduated from Eureka High School in Baker, Okla., in 1959.

A homemaker, her hobbies included bird watching, reading, traveling, listening to music, and her family. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Altar Society and was an oratory volunteer, all at Liberal.

On May 5, 1961, she married John C. Martinez at Liberal. He survives. She also is survived by two sons, John "Tony" Martinez Jr. and Carlos R. Martinez, both of Liberal; two daughters, Lisa A. Beeson, Liberal, and Mechelle F. Martinez, Dodge City; a brother, William "Bill" Delgado Jr., Liberal; a sister, Irene Velasquez, Ulysses; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. Anthony Catholic Church Building Fund, in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.

Ruby M. Atterberry

DIGHTON - Ruby M. Atterberry, 94, of Dighton, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton.

She was born Nov. 15, 1908, in Ciscero, the daughter of Charlie Edgar and Mettie May (Lawless) Terhune. She moved to Lane County with her family in 1917 and attended school in Dighton, where she graduated from high school. She earned a teaching certificate and taught for a short time at Sutton and East Lake rural schools in Lane County.

She married Charles Phillip Atterberry, Aug. 29, 1929, in Guymon, Okla., He died Dec. 4, 1988.

After their marriage, Ruby and Phil purchased the family farm. They farmed for many years before retiring and moving to Dighton. Ruby loved crocheting, quilting, and a wide variety of arts and crafts.

She is survived by one sister, Mary Davis, Starke, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Melvin Terhune and Pete Terhune, and two sisters, Lennie Chance and Lillie Pittman.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Boomhower Funeral home in Dighton.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Ben Friesen officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials are to the First Christian Church in care of Boomhower Funeral Home.

Helen Arlene Thompson

ELKHART - Helen Arlene Thompson, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Via Christi Regional Center St. Joseph campus in Wichita.

She was born Nov. 16, 1921 in Richfield, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Combs) Orth. She spent her early years in Richfield, though she graduated from high school in Elkhart.

She married Roscoe Thompson on Christmas Day 1940 in Elkhart. The two operated a Conoco gas station in Syracuse for a time before returning to Elkhart to work in the farming business. In the following years, she completed correspondence courses from Chicago Dress Design in 1955 and one as an art instructor in 1963. She began working at the Elkhart City Library in 1967, taking over as head librarian the following year. In addition, she taught senior high and adult Sunday school classes.

She occupied several positions in the Order of the Eastern Star, including worthy matron, district aide and grand page. She was active in the Morton County Hospital Auxiliary, as well as social clubs such as the Women's Society of Christian Services. Thompson was also an emergency medical technician in Elkhart and a well-known artist.

Her hobbies included flower gardening, quilt embroidering, art, reading, playing the piano and spending eight to nine months of the year with her husband at their vacation home in Bella Vista, Ark.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Gary M. Thompson, Wichita, Tony Lee Thompson, Elkhart, and Mark Skyler Thompson, Elkhart; a daughter, Vicki Jane Noffsinger, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a brother, Jim Orth, Austin, Texas; two sisters, Doris Runkle, Albuquerque, N.M., and Lola Johnson, Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.

Friends may call 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Elkhart United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Brackett and the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 514 Kansas Ave., P.O. Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Kenneth O. Powell

Kenneth O. Powell, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born March 11, 1918, in Finney County, the son of Calvin L. and Beulah Wheeler Powell.

A lifetime resident of Finney County and Garden City, he graduated from Garden City High School. During World War II, he served as a baker in the U.S. Navy from December 1942 to October 1945. After the service, he returned to Garden City. A farmer, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.

Mr. Powell was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was an ordained elder in the church. He also belonged to the VFW and American Legion.

On July 15, 1939, he married Ruth Harms at Cimarron. She survives. He also is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Lucas, Stratton, Colo., and Florence Leeper, Great Bend; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Fern Shriner and Helen Redford.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by Garden City Area Veterans.

Visitation hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
