Aaliyah Fonseca-Lucero

Funeral for Aaliyah Ivonne Fonseca-Lucero, 3-month-old daughter of Sammy D. Lucero and Lori C. Fonseca of Garden City, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Aaliyah died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Dec. 20, 2002, at Garden City.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, David Isaiah Lucero, and a sister, Tonia Isabel Lucero, both of the home; her grandparents, Teresa Herrera of Kansas City, Mo., and Oscar Fonseca and Pauline Lucero, both of Garden City; her great-grandparents, Adela Fonseca, and Luis and Alice Herrera Sr., all of Garden City; and several uncles and aunts. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Gilbert C. Lucero Sr.; and her great-grandfathers, Ismael Fonseca and Joe Lopez.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Mary E. Bennett

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Mary E. Bennett, 72, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Mark Randolph officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Bennett died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Greeley County Long Term Care Center in Tribune.

She was born June 29, 1930, at Pueblo, Colo., the daughter of William Arnold and Zula Elnora Stewart Chapman.

A Tribune resident since 1981, moving from Lamar, Colo., she was a homemaker. She belonged to First Baptist Church, Busy Bee's and Pitch Club, all at Tribune.

On May 11, 1952, she married Wilbert Lee "Dick" Bennett at Tribune. He died Aug. 31, 1997, at Wichita. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include two sons, William Lee Bennett of Manhattan, and Joseph Lynn Bennett of Lamar; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Mary E. Bennett Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Joe J. Stroh

Vigil service for Joe J. Stroh, 80, with Knights of Columbus rosary, will begin at 8 tonight at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Mr. Stroh died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at his home in Garden City.

He was born June 25, 1922, at Cawker City, the son of Joseph and Grace Nelson Stroh. He grew up in Cawker City and graduated from Cawker City High School.

Mr. Stroh served in the U.S. Army 167th Infantry during World War II. Involved in five major battles, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge, he lived in Greeley and Pueblo, Colo., before moving to Garden City in 1970 where he was the owner and operator of Stroh Cleaners.

He belonged to St. Dominic Catholic Church, was a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus and belonged to Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping and playing cards.

On Nov. 18, 1947, he married Bernice Schmitt at Tipton. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Jim Stroh of Ulysses, and Don Stroh of Montgomery, Texas; four daughters, Jean Stroh of Garden City, Linda Runge of Wichita, Kathy Arterburn of Davenport, Iowa, and Joyce McClure of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Alfred Stroh of Cawker City; a sister, Irene Cole of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the St. Dominic Building Fund or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Glenn E. Gillespie

HUGOTON - Glenn E. Gillespie, 87, of Hugoton, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton. He had been a resident of Pioneer Manor in Hugoton for more than five years.

He was born March 3, 1916, in Sitka Township in Clark County, the son of Roy E. and Grace Teter Gillespie. When he was 3, the family moved to Stevens County.

A farmer, Mr. Gillespie also worked as agency manager for Farm Bureau in Stevens County for 24 years. He was a member of First Christian Church of Hugoton and enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.

On Aug. 28, 1948, he married Laura V. Wilson in Stevens County. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Dennis Gillespie of Jefferson, Texas, Roger and Neal R. Gillespie, both of Hugoton; a daughter, Kay Gillespie of Garden City; a brother, Floyd "Fud" Gillespie of Hugoton; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Helen Marie "Billie" Curtis.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the church or Pioneer Manor, both in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Marion 'Sam' Salmans

Marion K. "Sam" Salmans, 92, of Wichita, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003.

He was born Jan. 20, 1911, at Rozel. He grew up in Larned before the family moved to Garden City where he attended high school and what is now Garden City Community College. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1934.

For 42 years, interrupted only by service as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he was a sales representative with Burroughs Corp. (now Unisy). In 1976, he embarked on a 17-year second career at Intrust Bank in Haysville (formerly Haysville State Bank), retiring at the age of 83 as a vice president.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Agnes; a son, Charles Salmans of Darien, Conn.; a daughter, Diane Roggow of Longmont, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at College Hill United Methodist Church, Wichita.

Memorials are suggested to the church, 2930 First St., Wichita, KS 67204; Garden City Community College Endowment Fund, 801 Campus Drive, Garden City; or Sunflower Lane at Larksfield, 7373 E. 29th St., Wichita, KS 67226.

Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements.

William Schweikhard

William Jacob "Bill" Schweikhard, 79, of Neodesha, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Golden Keys Nursing Home in Neodesha.

He was born Oct. 25, 1923, at Wichita, the son of Christian Henry and Mamie Lola Pearl Kibbie Schweikhard. He grew up and attended school in Wichita.

On April 27, 1962, he married Mildred Jean Stevens at Raton, N.M., and they made their home in Dodge City. Mr. Schweikhard was in the service industry for many years.

He is survived by four daughters, Carole Anderson of Neodesha, Judy Schweikhard of Parsons, Ruth Belknap of Garden City, and Wanda Schweikhard of Chanute; a son, Cecil Schweikhard of Summerville, Fla.; two sisters, Lucy Blair of Delta, Colo., and Grace Elmore of El Dorado; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Neodesha Cemetery, with Dave Cheshier officiating.

Visitation hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Loran Fawcett Funeral Home, Neodesha, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Irma V. Lewis

Funeral Mass for Irma V. Lewis, 86, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City.

Mrs. Lewis died Monday, March 17, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born June 27, 1916, at Sopris, Colo., the daughter of Pietro "Pete" and Luigia Marie "Louisa" Zannona Borsa. She grew up in the area of Trinidad, Colo.

On Feb. 4, 1940, she married O.K. Lewis at Raton, N.M. They then moved to Garden City where she worked at Patterson Jewelry for several years and then helped her husband with the family painting business.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed making Indian dolls and jewelry, reading and being outdoors, especially in her iris and rose garden.

Her husband died May 7, 1986. She also was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

She is survived by two sons, James F. Lewis of Fontana, Calif., and John F. Cartelli of Bell, Calif.; a sister, Elda Melindaz of Denver; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ethel Vita Tope

LAKIN - Ethel Vita Tope, 85, died Monday, March 17, 2003, in Ulysses.

She was born May 23, 1917, in Hamilton County, the daughter of Leslie and Gertrude G. Hixson Roberts. She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1935 and attended Fort Hays State University for two years.

On Jan. 1, 1938, she married George H. Tope at Kendall. He died March 17, 1988. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Daniel George "Boone" Tope and John Tope; two brothers, Lewis and Marvin Roberts; two great-grandsons; and three brothers-in-law.

A lifetime resident of Syracuse, she lived with family members in Lakin for the past year before moving to Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

Mrs. Tope had been a school teacher in Hamilton County and Kendall from 1936 to 1943, was a farm wife from 1943 to 1965, worked in the Kendall School lunch program from 1965 to 1975, and with the Syracuse School USD No. 494 hot lunch program from 1975 to 1983. In 1997, she retired from the Syracuse VIP (Sunflower Square) where she had been the assistant cook for nine years.

She was a 50-year member and served as an officer of the Eastern Star, was a 4-H leader, former Hamilton County Board member and a Farm Bureau member. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, playing cards and having pizza with her grandchildren. She collected bells, enjoyed crocheting afghans, cooking, traveling and working in her vegetable garden. She and her husband enjoyed camping and fishing at various lakes in the area.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet Loeppke of Lakin; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Roberts of Syracuse; four sisters, Bernice King of Ulysses, Grace Helm and Pearl Rector, both of Syracuse, and Phebe Reid of Garden City; two daughters-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Syracuse. Graveside committal service will follow at Kendall Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Square VIP Senior Center in Syracuse, in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
