Laura Faith Dunagan
Olivia Hope Dunagan

Laura Faith and Olivia Hope Dunagan, infant twin daughters of Travis L. and Wendy L. Dunagan of Garden City, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, shortly after their birth.

The girls had been baptized in the Lutheran faith.

In addition to their parents, they are survived by a brother, Scott M. Dunagan of the home; their grandparents, Thurman and Delinda Dunagan of Scott City, and George Sr. and LaDonna Brown of Jetmore; their great-grandparents, Willard and Eldora Dunagan of Morris, Okla., and Cecil Billings of Scott City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be noon Monday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church Preschool, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Catherine 'Kathleen' Goss

Catherine "Kathleen" Goss, 85, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born April 8, 1918, at Polk, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Catherine Auer Miller. She grew up and attended schools in Polk.

On Feb. 20, 1936, she married Orie D. Goss at Central City, Neb. They moved to Garden City shortly after their marriage.

A homemaker, Mrs. Goss enjoyed sewing, textile painting and gardening. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

Her husband died June 18, 1985. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and an infant sister.

She is survived by four sons, Merle Goss of Bella Vista, Ark., Dwight Goss of Strausburg, Mo., Verlin and Curtis Goss, both of Olathe; two daughters, Louetta Dague of Scott City, and Kathy Phillips of Garden City; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Rex L. Porter

Funeral for Rex L. Porter, 67, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Bob Billings and Larry Billings officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Porter died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 27, 1935, at Dodge City, the son of Jack and Beulah Mead Porter. He grew up and attended schools in Dodge City.

A Garden City resident since 1955, he was a self-employed cement contractor, owning and operating Rex Porter Concrete. Passionate about cars and racing, he spent most of his Saturday nights at the race track in Dodge City. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he raced with his sons.

On Jan. 6, 1971, he married Terry Gray Voigt at Reno, Nev. She survives. He also is survived by six sons, Larry Gourley, Jeff Porter and Kenny Porter, all of Garden City, Todd and Pete Voigt, both of Salina, and Rod Voigt of Jetmore; two daughters, Jana Rogers of Holcomb, and Nancy Porter of Garden City; four sisters, Cleo Juarez of Hugoton, Corine Unruh of Montezuma, Joyce Billings of Salina, and June Billings of El Paso, Texas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two infant brothers.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Mary Ruth Barr

MONTEZUMA - Mary Ruth Barr, 92, of Montezuma and formerly of Dodge City, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.

She was born Dec. 24, 1910, at Paris, Ark.

Mrs. Barr was a certified nurse's aide and had worked at St. Anthony's Hospital in Dodge City for 20 years. She enjoyed watching television, reading, listening to the radio, sewing, crafts, pets and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed embroidering and giving her handmade gifts to her grandchildren.

In 1940, she married Vern G. Barr at Dodge City. He died in 1976. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by three sons, Herbert D. Barr of Sparta, N.J., Cecil LeRoy Barr of Vinita, Okla., and Tommy W. Barr of Joplin, Mo.; a daughter, Nona Foskuhl of Montezuma; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Morningside Community Church, Montezuma, with the Rev. Lyn Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Montezuma Funeral Home.

Elverna 'Joyce' Colborn

ELKHART - Graveside service for Elverna Joy "Joyce" Colborn, 82, was to be 11 this morning at Elkhart Cemetery, with Richard Stiver officiating.

Mrs. Colborn died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Texas County, Okla., the daughter of Leo Jackson and Agnes Marie Turner Guymon. She spent her early years in Texas County, where she attended Triumph Country School. In 1950, she moved to Cimarron County, Okla. She moved to Elkhart in 1965.

A homemaker, her special interests included spending time with her family and friends, gardening and baking. She belonged to the Liberal congregation of Jehovah Witness.

On May 4, 1940, she married J.L. "Bud" Colborn at Dalhart, Texas. He died Jan. 5, 1985. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two grandchildren, Billy Clay and Todd Wayne Thrash.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Thrash of Boise City, Okla.; two sons, Gary Colborn of Kendall, and Jerry Colborn of Raton, N.M.; a sister, Phyllis Tucker of Elkhart; a brother, Jack Guymon of Keyes, Okla.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Morton County Care Center or the donor's choice, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Velma M. Young

Velma M. Young, 75, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 17, 1927, at Brickeys, Mo., the daughter of Floyd J. and Stella M. Garris Douglas.

A Garden City resident since 1991, moving from Festus, Mo., she had been a district manager for Beltone Audiology. She was a member of Bible Christian Church of Garden City.

On June 8, 1946, she married Alfred "Jack" Young at Festus. He died Nov. 15, 1980, at St. Louis. She also was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

She is survived by a son, Alfred "Jack" Young of Festus; a daughter, Linda Rose of Garden City; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 1:30 p.m. May 18 at Bible Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Mark Ingmire officiating. Additional services will be conducted in Festus, with burial at Methodist Cemetery in Festus.

There will be visitation. Memorials to the Velma M. Young Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Raymond Eugene Fort

ULYSSES - Funeral for Raymond Eugene Fort, 75, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Bill Harrold and Don Calderwood officiating. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79.

Mr. Fort died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born June 27, 1927, in Stafford County, the son of Clifford Floyd Sr. and Ida Louise Dotts Fort.

He attended Hays University for one year before going on to Kansas State University where he graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees. He received his doctorate in agricultural economics from Cornell University.

He spent more than 40 years overseas with the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Department of State, United Nations and as a private consultant. He worked in Iran, Indonesia, Syria, India, Nepal, Western Samoa, Philippines, Italy, Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan and Mongolia, and particularly loved Iran, Afghanistan and Mongolia. He spent last summer working on re-establishing the postwar agricultural economy in Afghanistan.

Fluent in Farsi, Dari, Urdu, Arabic and Hindustani, he also had some knowledge of many other languages. Because of his strong feeling that education was the key to improving the quality of life and reducing poverty around the world, he sponsored a number of children through school in many countries.

Mr. Fort was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses, Ulysses Rotary Club, Johnson Bible Study, Intellectuals and Federal Land Bank and Trust. He was chairman of the board for the Committee on Aging, belonged to the Cornell Alumni Association and Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79, was an Eagle Scout and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Active in 4-H, he was the first director of the Rock Springs 4-H camp.

On June 19, 1959, he married Joan Allison Platt at Tehran, Iran. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, John Clifford Fort of Cincinnati, and Sgt. Som Prasad Fort of Fort Lewis, Wash.; two daughters, Cynthia Louise Fort of Derby, Vt., and Sandra Fort Smith of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Sarah Mae Finch of Bartlesville, Okla.; a brother, William Thayne Fort of Hays; two sisters-in-law; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clifford Floyd Fort Jr. and Allen Earl Fort.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Raymond Fort Memorial Fund for Education, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

F. Keith Shull

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for F. Keith Shull, 75, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Shull died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Oct. 26, 1927, at Lamar, Colo., the son of William Horton and Lucille Lloyd Lucas Shull. He attended school in Lamar through junior high before the family moved to Lane County where he graduated from Dighton High School. He attended electrical school in Chicago before serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1947 to 1949. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Lane County and farmed. In 1977, he moved to Scott City where he was a long-time electrician with Wheatland Electric Co-op.

Mr. Shull was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, a 32nd degree member of Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279 of Dighton and belonged to Isis Shrine of Salina. His special interests included hunting, fishing, singing, carpentry and woodworking. He also enjoyed spending time with children, especially his children and grandchildren.

On June 13, 1946, he married June J. Busch at Enid, Okla. She survives. He also is survived by a son, David Shull of Severn, Md.; four daughters, Sharron Shull of Hurst, Texas, Patricia Shull of Norfolk, Va., Janet Gibbs of Broomfield, Colo., and Cindy Hornback of Scott City; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Horton and Paul Shull.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Lane County Health Care Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
