Robert Evans

Robert Clyde “Bob” Evans was born on Sept. 29, 1920 in the coal-mining town of Dewar, Okla. to John Clyde Evans and Jeanette Rippon. When Bob was four, his parents divorced and he and his mother went to Detroit Mich. to live with his grandmother and uncle. At the age of seven, his mother died and his grandmother was unable to care for him. He was given to the Children’s Aid Society in Detroit and lived in several foster homes, most of which were not successful. Finally, a suitable foster home was found; they had a daughter but wanted a son as well. He stayed with them several years and finally life was looking up. When Bob was 11, he was notified that the Children’s Aid Society had found that his father was still alive and Bob was sent to Okla. to live with his father. By this time, his father had remarried a woman by the name of Hattie Mae Carrell and they had three children. Upon arriving in Dow, Okla., Bob already had three step-siblings. The family eventually grew until he had total of eight siblings.

As he attended school in Dow, he worked several odd jobs for farmers in the outlying areas to help his new family. Times were hard and jobs were few. When he was 17, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps, a government-sponsored organization that used young men in their reforestry projects. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. for two years. He returned home at 19 and jobs were still hard to find so he worked for some of the local farmers to help support the family. Bob was a good hunter and expert with a rifle and shotgun. With his shooting skills, he was able to shoot a lot of rabbits, squirrels, ducks and geese, plus many frogs. His stepmother was an excellent cook; therefore, the family enjoyed many meals with biscuits and gravy thanks to Bob.

When Bob was 21 he was drafted into the Army, three months before World War II began. He was shipped to Ft. Knox, Ky., for six weeks of basic training, then overseas where he fought battles in Ireland, England, Italy, and the North African country of Algeria. While in Africa, he lost his right eye, his left thumb and had various wounds from shrapnel throughout his body. He earned the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He was a very proud World War II veteran. After he left the service, he returned home to Dewar, Okla. and worked several different jobs. He loved working on and restoring old cars. Later he would attend mechanics school at Okmulgee Tech, which was a branch of Oklahoma A&M, which is now Oklahoma State University.

While working on a harvest crew, he was in a restaurant in Carmen, Okla. and was introduced to Rhonda Duel. They dated a while, were married on June 22, 1949, and had a son, Robert Lynn, and a daughter, Karen Sue. They moved many places in Kansas, and eventually made their home in Clearwater. The last move they made was to Attica, where they lived until Rhonda died in February 2000. Bob sold some of his property and bought two lots at the Salt Plains Lake in Oklahoma. He enjoyed life on the lake, spending his time gardening, growing fruit trees and driving back and forth from the lake to Attica and anywhere else he chose to visit. He let no grass grow under his feet.

Bob had many friends, was a jokester and a great storyteller. He could talk your ear off and he never knew a stranger. Once you said hello you were a captive audience. On April 2, 2012, he fell and broke his hip while feeding his beloved dog Dolly. Unfortunately, he was never able to make it back home and passed away on Dec. 4, 2012 at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Graveside Services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at Attica Cemetery, Attica, Kan. Share condolences at www.CozineMemorial.com. Services by Broadway Mortuary.
