Carolyn Sue Taylor 1939-2000
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Carolyn Sue Taylor, 60, died Feb. 21 at Phoenix. She was born Aug. 3, 1939, the daughter of Thomas Roger and Mickey Goodwin. She married Arnold Taylor in 1988 at Oklahoma City, Okla. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Scott Jackson and Chris Jackson, both of Moore, Okla.; one daughter, Julie Jackson of Moore; her mother of Moore; one sister, Janet Miller of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Goodwin and Richard Goodwin.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Moore. Memorials are suggested to the church.

Ruth Mae Pancost 1908-2000
Ruth Mae Pancost, 91, died Feb. 27 at Sterling, Colo. She was born March 2, 1908, in Rice County, the daughter of Warren W. and Gertie Dale Smith Barnard. She married Walter Lesley Pancost Sept. 14, 1931, at McPherson. He preceded her in death. She was a 1927 graduate of Lyons High School and a 1931 graduate of McPherson College in McPherson. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, moving to Sterling in 1994, she had been director of Barton County Welfare Department in Great Bend.
Mrs. Pancost was a member of Faith Community Church and Silver and Gold Club, both of Great Bend, and AARP, RSVP, Southwest Kansas Area on Aging and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include one son, Allen Pancost of Sterling, Colo.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert D. Pancost.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend with the Rev. Fred Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimers Foundation or the church, both in care of the funeral home.

LaVern E. Schaffer 1926-2000
HUTCHINSON - LaVern E. Schaffer, 73, died Feb. 26 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born April 27, 1926, at La Crosse, the son of Stephen Frank and Searphine Martina Steckline Schaffer. He married Lula Mae Schroeder Nov. 29, 1947, at Hutchinson. She died Jan. 18, 1995. He married Betty Jean Vestle Dec. 1, 1995, at Las Vegas, Nev. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he was a retired communication expert for Southwestern Bell Telephone.
Schaffer attended Church of the Holy Cross and was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and USS Foote (DD-511) Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Robert M. Schaffer of Louisburg and Anthony B. Schaffer of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; three daughters, Susan L. Swanson of Windom, Judith A. Burnam of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Kathleen M. Gregory of Kansas City, Mo.; one stepson, Clark Barnes of Hutchinson; three stepdaughters, Kathy Mullen and Brenda Ludlow, both of Olathe, and Roxie Wyer of Hutchinson; two sisters, Evelyn Wells and Lillian Gardner, both of Hutchinson; 21 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Schaffer.
Rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson with the Rev. Brian J. Egan officiating. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Egan officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to World War II Veterans Memorial, in care of the funeral home.

Marvin L. Donovan 1932-2000
HOISINGTON - Marvin L. Donovan, 67, died Feb. 26 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born March 21, 1932, at Hoisington, the son of Jerome M. and Lenora E. Cromwell Donovan. He married Roberta E. Deichen Aug. 23, 1953, at Hoisington. She died Oct. 26, 1998. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a truck driver.
Donovan was a lifetime member of Vine United Methodist Church in Hoisington and was a volunteer driver for Hoisington Trolley.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Donovan of Wichita and Kenton Donovan of Hoisington; two daughters, Sherri Donovan and Vonda Donovan, both of Wichita; his mother of Hoisington; one brother, Gerald Donovan of Hoisington; two sisters, Melva Merlau of Hoisington and Delora Donovan of Wichita; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Charles Claycomb officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

William S. Jenkins 1904-2000
STAFFORD - Walter S. Jenkins, 96, died Feb. 25 at Stafford District Hospital in Stafford. He was born Feb. 12, 1904, at Stafford, the son of Thomas and Hannah Rankin Jenkins. He married Doris Cline Richardson Sept. 11, 1930, at Stafford. She died Oct. 22, 1993. A lifetime resident of Stafford, he was a farmer.
Jenkins was a member of First Christian Church of Stafford, Stafford Lions Club and was a past member of Stafford County Commissioners, having served several terms.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Ann Licholat of Golden, Colo.; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Okema True.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Karen Ault officiating. Burial will be at Stafford cemetery in Stafford. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

PAWNEE ROCK - William E. Base, 91, died Feb. 26 at Great Bend. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend.

Stella Marie Hayden 1915-2000
MECHANICSBURG, Ind. - Stella Marie Hayden, 84, died Feb. 25 at her home.
She was born June 26, 1915, at St. John, the daughter of Benjamin and Emma Williams Morford. She married Trenton Hayden Feb. 28, 1933, in Larned. A resident of Mechanicsburg, she worked at JC Penney in Lebanon, Ind., from 1953-1962 and for many years as a cook for Washington Township school system in Indiana.
Mrs. Hayden was a member of Mechanicsburg Christian Church, Happy Home-ec Club and Washington Township Ecure Club.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Deana Odom of Indianapolis, Ind., Bonnie St. Peter of Freemont, Mich., and Donna Steward of Lowell, Ind.; and one brother, Alvin Morford of St. John. She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Revs. Raymond Duff and Dan Shaw officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Frankfort, Ind. Friends may call until 8 tonight and Russell and Hitch Funeral Home in Lebanon and 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Fern M. Farris 1922-2000
HOISINGTON - Fern M. Farris, 77, died Feb. 24 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Aug. 26, 1922, at Texas County, Mo., the daughter of Newton Henry and Leota Catherine Scott Barton. She married Walter Farris March 15, 1937, at Texas County. He died Sept. 19, 1967. She married Edgar A. Farris June 2, 1963, at Yates Center. He died Aug. 7, 1988. A resident of Hoisington for 27 years, coming from ElDorado, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Farris was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Hoisington.
Survivors include one son, Jack D. Farris of Leon; seven daughters, June Erwin of Emporia, Melba Baker and Sherrie Eichman, both of ElDorado, Linda Currie of Pueblo West, Colo., Debbie Pearce of Winfield, Sheila Phillips of Hoisington and Kim Schneider of Great Bend; one sister, Neva McColgin of Licking, Mo.; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Carl Willis officiating. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.

Mildred Jones Kramer 1899-2000
LA CROSSE - Mildred Jones Kramer, 100, died Feb. 25, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care, in La Crosse. She was born April 6, 1899, at LaGrange, Ill., the daughter of John F. and Minnie Frese. She married Herb Dornfield in March 1921. They divorced. She married Charles Jones March 17, 1953. He died Aug. 16, 1980. She married the Rev. Herald Kramer Aug. 30, 1986, at Lake Wales, Fla. He died Jan. 18, 1989. A resident of La Crosse since 1953, coming from Florida, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Kramer was a member of the Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Dornfield; and one brother, Edgar Frese.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. today and until service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, in care of the funeral home.

Arthur W. Keffer 1930-2000
Arthur W. Keffer, 69, died Feb. 25 at his home. He was born Dec. 6, 1930, at Mapleton, the son of George P. and Thelma B. Albertson Keffer. He married Frankie L. Watkins Jan. 19, 1952, in Hutchinson. A resident of Great Bend for 47 years, coming from Hutchinson, he was a retired Riley School teacher for USD 428, having been an educator for 38 years.
Keffer was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend, retired major with the U.S. Army Reserves, former Boy Scout leader, life member of National Education Association, member and grand commander of Knights Templar of Kansas, member of Morrison-McFadden Post 3111 Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 180, member and past master of Great Bend Lodge 15, member and past high priest of Mount Nebo Chapter 36 of Royal Arch Masons, member and past illustrious master of Golden Belt Council 21 Cryptic Masons, member and past commander of St. Omer Commandery 14, past grand high priest of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Kansas 1989-90, member of Kansas Priory 33, Knights of York Cross of Honor, member of King David Tabernacle LX, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, Calvary Conclave Red Cross of Constantine in Wichita, Isis Shrine of Salina and past worthy patron Golden Sheaf Chapter 266 of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Arthur F. Keffer of Dodge City, William G. Keffer of Great Bend and Lee A. Keffer of Russell; four daughters, Anita Ellen Fischer, Jayne Wapelhorst and Jean Fick, all of Great Bend, and Anna Donecker of Claflin; two brothers, Floyd L. Keffer of Wichita and Elzie F. Keefer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters, Helen Smith of Nickerson and Mary Ann Worthington of Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating with Masonic rites by Great Bend Masonic Lodge 15.
Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home and after 9:30 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the church. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Shrine Club Travel Fund or Knights Templar Holy Land Pilgrimage, both in care of the funeral home.

William E. 'Bill' Base 1908-2000
PAWNEE ROCK - William E. "Bill" Base, 91, died Feb. 26 at Great Bend. He was born Aug. 11, 1908, at Pawnee Rock, the son of John J. and Kathern Schmidt Base. He married Rose Marie Brazda Sept. 1, 1940, at Pawnee Rock.
She preceded him in death. A lifelong resident of Pawnee Rock, he was a farmer, carpenter and house builder.
Base was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church at Pawnee Rock and Farm Bureau.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Rose Reile of Ness City and Patsy Ann Payne of Colony; one sister, Susie Wright of Battle Creek, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant brother, Gustof Base; and one sister, Malinda Friesen.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Muriel Stackley officiating. Burial will be at Bergthal Mennonite Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-9 tonight and from 9-11 a.m. Monday at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend and from 12:30 p.m. to service time at the church.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
