Sarah Ruth Roberson 1917-2000
LARNED - Sarah Ruth Roberson, 82, died Feb. 22 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born April 16, 1917, at Pawnee County, the daughter of John George and Alice M. Sawyer Mohr. She married Richard W. Fagen Feb. 23, 1937, at Larned. He died June 25, 1949. She married Edmond Kerr Roberson June 13, 1956, at Alva, Okla. He died April 19, 1972. A lifetime Pawnee County resident, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Roberson was a member of First Baptist Church of Larned and a volunteer at Emmaus House in Garden City.
Survivors include one son, Wallace Fagen of Great Bend; three daughters, Wilma Marvin of Versailles, Mo., Connie Gross of Garden City and Donna Roberson of Russell; four stepsons, Clifford Lee Fagen and Norman Roberson, both of Larned, Eldon Roberson of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Bob Roberson of Claremore, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Jane Bird of Garfield and Lois Coleman of Chickasha, Okla.; one brother, Charley F. Mohr of Hutchinson; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Jerry Leever officiating. Burial will be at Larned cemetery in Larned. Friends may call until 8 tonight and until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Emmaus House of Garden City, in care of the funeral home.

Marjorie Marie Clarke 1920-2000
Marjorie Marie Clarke, 79, died Feb. 21 at Life Care Center in Columbia, Tenn. She was born Oct. 3, 1920, in Barton County, the daughter of Oscar and Louise Krug Foelgner. She married Loren Doyle Clarke Oct. 14, 1940, at St. John. He died July 4, 1993. A longtime resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker and retail sales clerk.
Mrs. Clarke was a member of Central Baptist Church, Silver and Gold Club and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen L. Morrison of Weatherby Lake, Mo., Barbara Grundmayer of Hastings, Neb., and Peggy Mai of Columbia, Tenn.; one brother, Ken Foelgner of Kansas City; one sister, Vivian Chamberlin of Battle Creek, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from 5-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Mildred Rose Stalcup 1920-2000
ST. JOHN - Mildred Rose Stalcup, 79, died Feb. 21 at Stafford District Hospital in Stafford. She was born Aug. 20, 1920, at Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of Ewing Foster and Sylvia Hazel Williams. She married Marion "Pete" Russell Stalcup Oct. 26, 1943, at Franklin, Ky. He preceded her in death. She was a graduate of East Nashville High School in Nashville. A resident of St. John, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Stalcup attended the Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Sue Stephens of Wilmington, Del. She was preceded in death by one brother, Maurice Ray Williams.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel Inc. in St. John. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Charlsie Elaine Koerner 1940-2000
HAYS - Charlsie Elaine Koerner, 59, died Feb. 21 at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony's Campus in Hays. She was born March 27, 1940, at Great Bend, the daughter of Melvin and Bridgett Jacobs Karst. She married Theobald Ruder Jr. Jan. 16, 1960, at Hays He died Oct. 17, 1992. She married Ronald Koerner Sept. 3, 1981. A resident of Hays, she was a licensed practical nurse.
Mrs. Koerner was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Hays.
Survivors include two sons, Curtis Ruder and Mike Ruder, both of Hays; three daughters, Sonya Schmidtberger of Houston, Texas, Doey Kremeier of Cimarron and Mary Jacobs of Hays; her parents of Hays; one brother, Melvin Karst Jr. of Hays; two sisters, Sharon Befort of Hays and Melly Schmidt of Topeka; and 17 grandchildren.
A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 tonight followed by a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., both at Hays Memorial Chapel Inc. in Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Don Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Hays. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 tonight, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Cancer Council of Ellis County or to Masses, both in care of the funeral home.

Carole B. Speck 1937-2000
Carole B. Speck, 62, died Feb. 20 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born July 26, 1937, at Oklahoma City, Okla., the daughter of Max E. and Virginia Olga Cook Rehymer. A resident of Great Bend since May 1999, coming from Huntington Beach, Calif., she was a real estate agent.
Survivors include her mother, Virginia O. Gross of Great Bend.
There will be no funeral service or visitation. Memorials are suggested to Great Bend Humane Society Building Fund, in care of Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Leroy Henry Stieben 1931-2000
BAZINE - Leroy Henry Stieben, 68, died Feb. 20 at Ness County Hospital in Ness City. He was born June 22, 1931, at Bazine, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Margheim Stieben. He married Juanita Strait May 11, 1958, at Bazine. A lifetime resident of Bazine, he was a farmer.
Stieben was a member of St. Paul Congregational Church and American Legion Post 392, both of Bazine. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Gary Stieben of Bazine; his mother of Bazine; one brother, Larry Stieben of Bazine; and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Jason Godsell officiating. Burial will be at Bazine cemetery in Bazine with military rites by the American Legion of Bazine. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City and to service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or Bazine EMT Service, both in care of the funeral home.

Elsie Jane Hathaway 1936-2000
ST. JOHN - Elsie Jane Hathaway, 63, died Feb. 20 at Stafford District Hospital in Stafford. She was born Dec. 19, 1936, at Shaffer, the daughter of Ezra Ephraim Sr. and Doshia Hazel Smith. She married Jerry R. Hathaway Feb. 1, 1958, at St. John. A resident of St. John for 35 years, she was a homemaker, assistant editor of Chiron Review Literary magazine and co-founder of Chiron Review Poetry Festival.
Mrs. Hathaway was a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Survivors include her husband of the home; four sons, Michael Hathaway of St. John, Joseph R. Hathaway of San Diego, Calif., John Edwards Jr. of Freeman, Mo., and Ben Edwards of Lawrence; one daughter, Sally Edwards of Salina; one brother, Ezra E. Smith Jr. of Maize; three sisters, Lillian Davis of Garden City, Sue Caster of Douglas and Charlene Morgan of St. John; two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristi Jane Hathaway; and three sisters, Laura Mae Davis, Irene Hacker and Jean Hathaway.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Minnis Chapel Inc. in St. John with the Rev. A.J. Owens officiating. There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated. Memorials are suggested to Stafford District Hospital or PETA, both in care of the funeral home.

Jack Dennis Grow 1931-2000
LARNED - Jack Dennis Grow, 68, died Feb. 20 at Golden Plains Healthcare Center in Hutchinson. He was born July 14, 1931, at Latham, the son of Eldo A. and Lula Beil Coons Grow. A resident of Larned since 1989, he was a retired Larned State Hospital Employee, having worked in maintenance.
Grow was of Christian faith.
Survivors include one son, Steve Grow of Long Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Debbie Grow and Kimberly Grow, both of Northglenn, Colo., and Deidra Grow of Garden City; one brother, Danny Grow of McPherson; one sister, Delores Cox of El Dorado; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. Richard Martin officiating. Burial will be at Larned cemetery in Larned. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Walter H. Schmidt 1914-2000
EMPORIA - Walter H. Schmidt, 86, died Feb. 20 at Vintage Manor in Emporia.
He was born Jan. 29, 1914, southwest of Olpe, the son of John E. and Ida E. Wehrenberg Schmidt. He married Viola May Counts Jan. 28, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church of Olpe. She died July 13, 1995. A resident of Emporia, coming from Hartford, he had worked for Amoco Service Pipeline Company in Hays for 28 years, retiring in 1969. He then worked for Sauder Custom Fabrication and Didde Graphics Corporation, both of Emporia.
Schmidt was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was a military veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater as a mechanic, bridge builder, carpenter and machine operator.
Survivors include one son, Robert Schmidt of Emporia; one daughter, Evelyn Essmiller of Great Bend; three sisters, Leona Conrade and Inez Hines, both of Emporia, and Louise McIntire of Wichita; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Herman Schmidt.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia with the Rev. Norbert Tegtmeier officiating. Burial will be at Hartford cemetery in Hartford with military honors by Lowry-Funston Post 1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

K.W. 'Pete' Kirkman 1917-2000
K.W. "Pete" Kirkman, 82, died Feb. 20 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born May 27, 1917, at Great Bend, the son of Edward and Mary Mallory Kirkman. He married Dolores Schartz Murphy. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was an agri-businessman.
Kirkman was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, charter member of Great Bend Coop Association and served on various church boards, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Dr. Joseph D. Kirkman of Hays and Donald K. Kirkman of Great Bend; one daughter, Jill Eliason of Overland Park; one stepson, Roger Murphy of Great Bend; one sister, Margaret Miller of Great Bend; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Central Kansas Medical Center Foundation, the church school endowment fund or Eldercare, all in care of the funeral home.

Verne Lippert 1911-2000
BISON - Verne Lippert, 88, died at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. He was born Nov. 9, 1911, at Bison, the son of Robert Wagner and Bessie May McCaskey Lippert. He married Pauline Isabel Blackwell Aug. 4, 1944, at Rozel. She died Sept. 10, 1992. A resident of Rush County for most of his life, he was a farmer and stockman and had been a high school teacher and administrator for 19 years in Lincoln, Lyons, Stark, La Crosse, Bison and Hanston.
Lippert was a member of Bison Methodist Church and Masons.
Survivors include two sons, Doyle Lippert of La Crosse and Kenton Lippert of Stillwater, Okla.; three daughters, Marilyn Zaren of Folsom, Calif., Nyla LeSage of Hill City and Rhonda Lippert-Bortz of Smith Center; one brother, Harold Lippert of Great Falls, Mont.; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harlan Lippert, Robert D. Lippert and Blaine Lippert.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse with the Rev. Kathy Bannister officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
