Wyvona 'Shorty' Briggs 1927-2000
HOISINGTON - Wyvona "Shorty" Briggs, 72, died March 18 at Salina Regional
Health Center in Salina. She was born Aug. 9, 1927, at Lyons, the daughter
of Charlie and Rosa Dillinger Welch. She married Charlie "Chief" Briggs
June 11, 1953, at Medford, Okla. A resident of Hoisington for 48 years,
coming from Lyons, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Briggs was a member of the Christian Church of Lyons.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Patrick M. Briggs of
Lyons; one brother, Jack Lee Welch of Lyons; one sister, Berta Hodson of
Medford, Ore.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four
brothers, Alfred Welch, Byron Welch, Willie Welch and Wylie Welch; and one
sister Marguerite Hodson.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington with the Rev. Tom Eastman officiating. Burial will be at
Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call until 9 tonight, 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday, all at the funeral
home. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of the
funeral home.

Euin Vance Petrey 1922-2000
ROGERS, Ark. - Euin Vance Petrey, 77, died March 18 at Northwest Nursing
Center in Fayetteville, Ark. He was born Nov. 27, 1922, at Willow Springs,
Mo., the son of Charles Eugene and Ruth Elizabeth Spence Petrey. He married
Connie Dubus. A resident of Rogers for 23 years, coming from Hoisington, he
worked in the oil fields as a tank welder and was previously employed by
O'Neill Tank Company in Great Bend.
Petrey was a member of American Baptist Church in McPherson and was a
lifelong member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a
U.S. Army veteran, having received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Vanessa Tennison of
Fayetteville and Rhonda Bertalotto of Rogers; two sisters, Wilma J. Wilber
of Burlington, Colo., and Virginia M. Voshell of Portland, Ore.; and three
grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Benton County Memorial
Park cemetery in Rogers. Military honors will be by Bella Vista VFW Post
9063. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association or Kidney
Foundation, in care of Burns Funeral Homes Inc. of Rogers.

Leon A. Schartz 1936-2000
HUTCHINSON - Leon A. Schartz, 63, died March 18 at his home. He was born
Sept. 1, 1936, at Barton County, the son of Nicholas A. and Aileen A.
Kimpler Schartz. He married Loreva M. Friesen Aug. 15, 1962, at Hutchinson.
He was a graduate of Great Bend High School and attended Fort Hays
University. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he was owner and operator of
LASCO Restaurant Equipment Company in Hutchinson.
Schartz attended St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Hutchinson. He was a U.S.
Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Leon A. Schartz II of
Kansas City, Mo.; one step son, Mark Friesen of Winfield; one step
daughter, Debbie Peterson of Hutchinson; seven brothers, Kenneth Schartz of
Topeka, Vernon Schartz of Grants Pass, Ore., Norbert Schartz of Sutter
Creek, Calif., Gerald Schartz of Hays, Tom Schartz of Phoenix, Ariz., Pat
Schartz of Ellinwood and Loren Schartz of Great Bend; three sisters,
Celesta Bennett of Hurst, Texas and De Sales Feist and Mary Bowes, both of
Ellinwood; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by one brother, Charles Schartz.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Richard
F. Stuchlik officiating. Friends may call until 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9
p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to
donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Frederick J. Schlessiger 1913-2000
CLAFLIN - Frederick J. Schlessiger, 87, died March 17 at Clara Barton
Hospital in Hoisington. Due to incomplete information received, two
sisters, Mrs. Henry Mantz and Mrs. Fred Sovereign, both of Claflin, were
omitted from survivor's list. Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home of Hoisington,
is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Irene Marchand 1908-2000
Helen Irene Marchand, 91, died March 16 at Integrated Health Services of
Great Bend. She was born Aug. 13, 1908, at Clinton, Mo., the daughter of
John Ervin and Cordie McCormick Renfro. She married Herbert Ervin Marchand
July 28, 1935, at Great Bend. He died April 13, 1988. A resident of Great
Bend for most of her life, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Marchand was a member of Central Baptist Church and Comanche Extension
Unit.
Survivors include one son, William Marchand of La Cygne; one daughter, Mary
Marchand of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two granddaughters. She was
preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Richter.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Gordon E.
Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in
Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Monday at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend, and from noon to service time
Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the
funeral home.

Evelyn C. Schauf Jacobs 1914-2000
HOISINGTON - Evelyn C. Schauf Jacobs, 85, died March 16 at Central Kansas
Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 4, 1914,
at Dubuque, the daughter of Michael P. and Mary K. Ney Schauf. She married
Lawrence E. Jacobs Oct. 28, 1940, at Dubuque. He died Jan. 9, 1988. She was
a 1931 graduate of Dorrance High School in Dorrance. A resident of
Hoisington since 1981, coming from a farm near Dubuque, she was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Jacobs was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and
Altar Society of Hoisington, Daughters of Isabella of Claflin, a former
member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Altar
Society of Dubuque.
Survivors include two sons, Michael E. Jacobs of Iron River, Mich., and
Lawrence B. Jacobs of Hoisington; two daughters, Bonnie Miller of Kinsley
and Joyce Viets of Zionsville, Ind.; one sister, Marie Thomas of Ellinwood;
10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
one sister, Germaine Schauf; and one great-grandson, Jacob Wheaton.
Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday and vigil service at
7:30 p.m. Sunday, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Pascal Klein
officiating. Burial will be at St. Catherine Catholic Church cemetery in
Dubuque. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Catherine Heritage Fund; the Dubuque
Catholic cemetery Trust or St. John the Evangelist church, all in care of
the funeral home.

Frederick J. Schlessiger 1913-2000
CLAFLIN - Frederick J. Schlessiger, 87, died March 17 at Clara Barton
Hospital in Hoisington. He was born March 16, 1913, at rural Claflin, the
son of Max Frederick and Mary Otillie Kafka Schlessiger. He married Esther
Elizabeth Ochs Dec. 31, 1933, at Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Claflin
and Ellinwood, he was a farmer and stockman.
Schlessiger was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Claflin.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jack F. Schlessiger of
rural Claflin; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Schlessiger and Albert
Schlessiger; and four sisters, Emma Drew, Helen Lathrop, Hanna Hieken and
Marie Schlessiger.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Arlo
Lehmann officiating. Burial will be at Claflin cemetery in Claflin. Friends
may call from 1-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with family
receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home
in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to the church or Claflin Ambulance
Service, in care of the funeral home.

Anna Margaret Nordman 1913-2000
LARNED - Anna Margaret Nordman, 86, died March 18 at Larned Healthcare and
Living Center in Larned. She was born Nov. 16, 1913, at Timken, the
daughter of Joseph and Albertina Omaught Gabriel. She married Joseph H.
Nordman June 11, 1934, at Great Bend. He died April 24, 1986. A resident of
Larned since 1985, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Norman belonged to King Memorial United Methodist Church, past member
of Eagles Auxiliary and Silver and Gold Club, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Fyler of Larned and Mary Ann
Rudiger of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Frank Gabriel of Great Bend; eight
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
twin sons, Raymond Nordman and Ralph Nordman; and one sister, Mary Husler.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the
Rev. Charles Grand officiating. Burial will be at Hill Crest Memorial Park
in Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9
a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to First United Methodist Church (Larned) Radio Fund, in care of
the funeral home.

Leonard J. Moeder 1923-2000
ELLINWOOD - Leonard J. Moeder, 77, died March 17 at Ellinwood District
Hospital in Ellinwood. He was born Feb. 13, 1923, at Odin, the son of
Edward and Ida Penka Moeder. He married Dorothy Bieberle May 2, 1950, at
Bushton. A resident of Ellinwood, he retired from working for the city
after 23 years. He also worked for the Knights of Columbus in Ellinwood.
Moeder was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the 3rd and 4th
Degree Knights of Columbus, all of Ellinwood.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Mike Moeder of Ellinwood;
one daughter, Ellen Albert of Hutchinson; five brothers, Ray Moeder,
Richard Moeder and Larry Moeder, all of Great Bend, Leo Moeder of Claflin
and Eddie Moeder of Hutchinson; three sisters, Monica Schneider of Olmitz,
Vi Prosser of Larned and Mary Ann Fisher of Plainville; and three
grandchildren.
An Altar Society Rosary will be at 3 p.m. Monday, a Wake service at 7 p.m.
Monday and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Monday, all at Kimple
Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at
the church with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at
Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St.
Joseph School Endowment Fund.
