Karen Cook Becker 1938-2000
Karen Cook Becker, 62, died April 8 at her residence. She was born March
10, 1938, at Larned, the daughter
of Herb and Margaret Louise Clutter Shallen-berger. She married
Jack R.
Cook, Aug. 17, 1954, at Great Bend.
He died Aug. 7, 1984. She married
Wayne H. Becker, Oct. 19, 1996, in Great
Bend. A resident of Great Bend for the past seven years coming here from
Weaubleau, Mo., she was a retired Realtor from Keenan Real Estate.
Mrs. Becker was a member of the First United Methodist Church, League of
Women Voters, Barton County Historical Society and Golden Belt Country
Club, all of Great Bend. She was a 1956 graduate of Great Bend High School.
Survivors include here husband of the home; two sons, Rock L. Cook of
Henley, Mo., and Dale J. Cook of Jefferson City, Mo.; one daughter, Ginger
L. Cook of Springfield, Mo.; two stepsons, Rocky W. Becker of Seward and
Ricky D. Becker of Larned; two stepdaughters, Tammy A. Hayden and Teri K.
Stephenson, both of Great Bend; two grandchildren; and 10
step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Leigh A.
Wayne.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Dick Near
officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9
a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home. Memorials are
suggested to the Barton County Historical Society.

Leona Sallee 1916-2000
ST. JOHN - Leona Sallee, 83, died April 6 at her home. She was born Dec.
10, 1916, in Stafford County, the daughter of William and Myrtle
Richardson. She married
James Arthur Sallee, July 31, 1938, at St. John. He
died April 22, 1988. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Sallee was a member of the Church of Christ in St. John.
Survivors include four sons, Larry Sallee of Hutchinson, Terry Sallee of
St. John, Jim Sallee of West Point, Miss., and Bob Sallee of Puyallup,
Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by a daughter, Carolyn Brann-Fennewald; and two brothers, Clint
Richardson and Earl Richardson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Revs. Carl Feril
and George Shelton officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery in
Raymond. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel in St.
John. Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice of Pratt or Eldercare of
Great Bend.

Jessie Mae Ling 1920-2000
JETMORE - Jessie Mae Ling, 79, died April 6 at Hodgeman County Health
Center in Jetmore. She was born April 9, 1920, in rural Hodgeman County,
the daughter of Jasper and Emma Anderson Gibbs. A lifetime Jetmore
resident, she was Hodgeman County treasurer for 33 years and worked at the
ASCS office and Farmers State Bank.
Mrs. Ling was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist
Women, served on the hospital board, community concert associate, was past
president of the Kansas County Treasurer's Association and worked on the
rations board, all of Jetmore.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosanne Edwards of Jetmore; two brothers,
Jack Gibbs and Frank Gibbs, both of Jetmore; three grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan
Wittman; two brothers, Cecil Gibbs and Sidney Gibbs; and a granddaughter,
Heather Edwards.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Mitch Reece
officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore. Friends may
call until 8 p.m. tonight at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials

Jack Tedder Curtis 1923-2000
STAFFORD - Jack Tedder Curtis, 77, died May 13 at Stafford District
Hospital in Stafford. He was born March 30, 1923, in rural Stafford, the
son of Ernest Everett and Mary Marie Tedder Curtis. He married
Musetta
Yingst June 1, 1945, at Stafford. He was a 1941 graduate of Stafford High
School. A lifetime resident of Stafford, he had worked in the oil field and
was the second generation owner of Curtis Cafe in Stafford.
Curtis was a member and Sunday school teacher of First United Methodist
Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, charter member of
Stafford Chamber of Commerce and past mayor of Stafford. He was a veteran
of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II as an aviation machinist at Dutch
Harbor, Alaska.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Cindy Creager of
LaCygne, Ruth Wiltshire and Barb New, both of Stafford; three sisters,
Ernestine Rogers of Topeka, Betty Jo Houchen of McPherson and Susan Houck
of Syracuse; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by one infant son; and four brothers, Jim Curtis, Tom
Curtis, Bill Curtis and Don Curtis.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with the
Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at Stafford cemetery in
Stafford. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the chapel. Memorials are

Dorothy E. Pfortmiller 1921-2000
NATOMA - Dorothy E. Pfortmiller, 78, died May 13 at Integrated Health
Services in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 15, 1921, at Alton, the daughter
of William H. A. and Jessie Boulthouse Hackerott. She married
Harold L.
Pfortmiller Sept. 8, 1940, at Natoma. He died May 2, 2000. A lifetime
resident of the Natoma area, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Pfortmiller was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma.
Survivors include one son, Glenn Pfortmiller of Great Bend; one daughter,
Joyce Clark of Anamosa, Iowa; one brother, Alvin Hackerott of Etoile,
Texas; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by one brother, Auldin Hackerott.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Don White
officiating. Burial will be at North Lutheran cemetery in Natoma. Friends
may call from noon-9 p.m. Tuesday at Pohlman's Mortuary in Natoma and from
9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested

Viola 'Billie' Shurtz 1913-2000
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Viola "Billie" Shurtz, 86, died May 13 at her home in
Springfield. She was born Nov. 25, 1913, at Esterville, Iowa, the daughter
of Henry and Anna Noll. She married
Ty Shurtz July 26, 1937, at Crown
Point, Ind. She was a 1932 graduate of Braman Oklahoma High School. A
resident of Springfield since 1980, coming from Hudson, Ellinwood and
Larned communities, she played semi-pro women's basketball proir to
marriage.
Mrs. Shurtz was a member of St. John's Chapel United Church of Christ and
Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 963, both of Springfield.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son; Mort Shurtz of
Springfield; four sisters; one brother; and two grandsons. She was preceded
in death by three brothers.
Funeral will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel in
Springfield with the Revs. John Masters and Sol Codillo officiating. Burial
will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Braman cemetery in Braman, Okla. Friends
may call from 4 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the chapel. Memorials
are suggested to the church or American Heart Association, in care of the
funeral home.

Alex Tonche 1979-2000
HUTCHINSON - Alex Tonche, 21, died May 11 at Hutchinson. He was born April
17, 1979, at Hoisington, the son of Ismael and Christine Torrez Tonche. A
Hutchinson resident for seven years, coming from Hoisington, he was an
employee of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Torres was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church of Hutchinson.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Christine and Jose Guzman of
Hutchinson; and grandparents, John and Bessie Torrez of Hoisington and
Manuel Tonche of Mexico.
Parish rosary will be at 7 tonight at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home in
Hutchinson with the Rev. Richard Stuchlik officiating. Funeral Mass will be
at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at Fairlawn Burial Park

Helen S. Connor 1903-2000
Helen S. Connor, 96, died May 11 at Integrated Health Services of
Ellinwood. She was born July 21, 1903, at Harper, the daughter of Charles
Henry and Ida Margaret Schenck Simpson. She married
John "Herbert" Connor
June 30, 1924, at Hoisington. He died Jan. 17, 1949. She was a 1921
graduate of Hoisington High School. A longtime resident of northern Barton
County, coming to Great Bend in 1991, she was a retired farmer.
Mrs. Connor was a member of First United Methodist Church and Una Chapter
119, Order of Eastern Star, both of Hoisington. She was a charter member of
Albion Center Extension Homemakers Unit of northern Barton County.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen Kennedy of Great Bend; one sister,
Marjorie Shaffer of Hutchinson; two grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Nathan Simpson
and Paul Simpson; and two sisters, VaLeda Murphy and Lois Simpson.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at St.
John cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today and from

Charles B. Replogle, MD 1927-2000
Charles B. Replogle, M.D., 73, died May 12 at his home in Great Bend. He
was born April 28, 1927, at Cottonwood Falls, the son of Sidney B. and
Helen Burnett Replogle. He married
Lois Lacy on March 6, 1955, at Iola. A
resident of Great Bend since 1955, coming from Ellis, he was a physician
who retired in December, 1993.
Replogle was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ;
Sigma Nu Fraternity; Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity; Alpha Omega Alpha
Honorary Medical Society; Kansas Medical Society; American Medical Society;
charter member of American Academy of Family Practice Physicians; former
chief of staff of Central Kansas Medical Center; former USD 428 school
board member; former director of American State Bank; former member of
Zeredatha Masonic Lodge 80 of Cottonwood Falls; member of Golden Belt
Country Club; Great Bend Hunting Club; Quail Unlimited; and Ducks
Unlimited. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Steven Replogle of
Wichita; three daughters, Jane Barber of Overland Park, Susan Debes and
Anne Kutina, both of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and three
step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Shore
and Burnett Galle.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. William F.
Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may
call from 1-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral
