Verna Mae Ellis 1924-2000
Verna Mae Ellis, 76, of Great Bend died July 31 at Hutchinson Hospital. She
was born March 8, 1924, at Louisville, Miss., the daughter of James H. and
Mary Bessie Commer Whitehead. She married the Rev. Julius C. Ellis Feb. 6,
1943, at Pueblo, Colo. A resident of Great Bend since 1984, coming from
Ellinwood, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Ellis was a member of Eastside Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Phyllis Parsons of
Great Bend; one sister, June Warren of Great Bend; four grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Julius C.
Ellis Jr., and Bruce Allen Ellis.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Chapel in Great
Bend with the Rev. Bill Martin officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend
Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service
time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the
church building fund, in care of the funeral home.

Loren G. Hicks 1923-2000
SUN CITY, Ariz. - Loren G. Hicks, 76, died July 20. He was born Nov. 4,
1923, in Barton County, the son of Gilbert and Nola Hicks. He married
Dorothy Esch. A resident of Arizona since 1984, he was a retired U.S.
Postal employee.
Hicks was post commander of American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. He was
a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II with the 640th Tank Battalion.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Charles W. "Bill" Esch of
Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Wayne Hicks of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; four
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held July 28 at Veteran's National Memorial
Cemetery in Phoenix.

Louise E. Van Eaton 1907-2000
OAKLEY - Louise E. Van Eaton, 92, died July 31 at Prairie Senior Living
Complex in Colby. She was born Aug. 11, 1907, at Streator, Ill., the
daughter of Roy and Mary McClearnon Jennings. She married Glenn Van Eaton
Nov. 5, 1925, at Larned. He died March 14, 1959. A resident of the Oakley
and Monument areas for the past 70 years, coming from Larned, she was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Van Eaton was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and St.
Joseph's Altar Society, both in Oakley.
Survivors include two sons, John Van Eaton of Monument and Jerry Van Eaton
of Oakley; five daughters, Jean Chrisler of Oakley, Margaret Ann Younker of
Great Bend, Patty Dawn Davis of Victorville, Calif., Mary Jo Sowers of
Phoenix, Ariz., and Glennette Smith of Parsons; one sister, Eva Deaver of
Garden City; 31 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by two brothers, Newton Jennings and Leroy Jennings; and three
sisters, Viola Burchfield, Alice Colglazier and Mary LeSage.
Rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home in Oakley.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Roger K.
Meitl officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery in Oakley. Friends
may call from 2-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, all at
the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the
funeral home.

Edna Webster 1918-2000
Edna Webster, 82, died July 31 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose
Campus in Great Bend. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced
by Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Verna M. Ellis 1924-2000
Verna M. Ellis, 76, died July 31 at Hutchinson Hospital. Survivors and
funeral arrangements will be announced by Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend.

Thelma Shafer 1915-2000
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Thelma Shafer, 85, died Sept. 27 at the Life Care Center
of Grandview, Mo., nursing home. She was born Jan. 19, 1915, in
Arkadelphia, Ark. She was a graduate of Springfield, Mo., High School. She
married Elvin P. Flanders. He died in 1960. She married Arthur Maynard. He
died in 1969. She then married William Shafer. A resident of Kansas City
for 38 years, coming from Great Bend, she was retired from General Services
Administration.
Mrs. Shafer was a member of First Christian Church and Rebekah Lodge, both
of Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Clarence Darrell Flanders of Kansas
City; two daughters, Doreen Snyder of Grandview and Delaine Kidney of St.
Marys; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-granddaughter.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends
may call from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Park Lawn Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo.
Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home of St. Marys is in charge of graveside
services.

Dillard Junior Luther 1927-2000
WICHITA - Dillard Junior Luther, 72, died Sept. 23 in Reno County. He was
born Nov. 17, 1927, at Great Bend, the son of Dillard Julius and Gertrude
Mae Miller Luther. A resident of Wichita, he was a former musician and
entertainer.
Survivors include one son, Dil D. Luther of Deltona, Fla; two brothers,
Warren Luther of Hays and Leland Luther of Great Bend; one sister, Bonnie
Crawford of Wichita; and three grandchildren. Downing & Lahey Mortuary of
Wichita is in charge of arrangements.

Veronica A. Burgardt 1915-2000
Veronica A. Burgardt, 84, died Sept. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center,
St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 9, 1915, at Liebenthal,
the daughter of John and Anna Margaret Geist Heronema. She married
Sylvester Burgardt Nov. 19, 1935, at Loretto. He preceded her in death. A
resident of Great Bend, she was a janitor and cook for a school and church
in Ellinwood.
Mrs. Burgardt was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse.
Survivors include one son, Elmer Burgardt of Great Bend; two daughters,
Agnes Weins of Richland, Wash., and Kay Ann Weesner of San Clemente,
Calif.; two sisters, Helen Wagner of Great Bend and Dorothy Reed of
Bloomfield, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by one daughter, Lucille Shepard; four brothers,
William H. Heronema, Robert Heronema, Edward Heronema and Alvin Heronema;
four sisters, Mathilda Basgall, Clara Wagner, Mary Alice Eubank and
Christina Weber; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Rosary service will be at 7:30 tonight at Janousek Funeral Home in La
Crosse. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev.
Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5-7:30 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Kathryn Ann Wilson 1954-2000
Kathryn Ann Wilson, 46, died Sept. 27 at Via Christi Regional Medical
Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born April 12, 1954, at
Great Bend, the daughter of H.E. "Jack" and Betty Hill Crosby. She married
Terry G. Wilson March 21, 1987, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great
Bend, she was an accounting clerk for Production Credit Association.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of Community Christian Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband; her mother of Great Bend; five brothers,
Donald W. Crosby of Houston, Texas, Edward E. Crosby of Pawnee Rock, Steven
K. Crosby of Nashville, Tenn., Larry M. Crosby of Littleton, Colo., and
H.E. "Ed" Crosby III of Lakeland, Fla.; and two sisters, Jacqueline J. Reed
and Sherry J. Peschka, both of Great Bend.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Burial will be at Pawnee
Rock Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Saturday, from 1-9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday,
all at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m.
Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Ronald McDonald
House of Wichita or Lupus Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.

Mary Ella Rees 1900-2000
Mary Ella Rees, 100, died Sept. 26 at Integrated Health Services of Great
Bend. She was born June 23, 1900, at Spring Hill, the daughter of James F.
and Minnie Chrisman Jones. She attended Union District 37 Rural School. She
married Ray B. Rees Sept. 4, 1920, at Paola. He died May 18, 1984. A
longtime resident of Hillsdale, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Rees was a member of Church of Christ in Spring Hill and EHU.
Survivors include one daughter, Pauline Riley of Wichita; three
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She
was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Jones ; and one sister, Lucy
Burris.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola.
Burial will be at Hillsdale cemetery in Hillsdale. Friends may call from
7-8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice,
in care of the funeral home.

Sharon Kay Ringwald 1952-2000
LYONS - Sharon Kay Ringwald, 48, died Sept. 28 at her home in Lyons. She
was born Jan. 21, 1952, at Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of James William
and Dolores Hiatt Admire. She graduated high school at Sioux City, Iowa,
and attended two years of college. She married C.R. Ringwald Aug. 13, 1994,
at the family farm in rural Chase. A resident of Lyons since 1996, coming
from Chase, she was a dietician at Lyons Good Samaritan Center.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dan Kritzer and Pat Kritzer, both
of Sioux City; two sisters, Donna Isom and Louise Admire, both of Sioux
City; and six grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons with the
Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery
in rural Chase. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Lyons Good Samaritan Center, in care of the
funeral home.
