James Edward Smith 1929-2001
LARNED - James Edward Smith, 72, died April 17 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. He was born March 29, 1929, in Larned, the son of William Edward and Florence Dipman Smith. He married Virginia L. Woelk Nov. 1, 1950, in Albert. A long-time resident of Larned, he was a refrigeration and heating technician at Larned State Hospital and a mechanic for the Department of Transportation at Garden City. Smith was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Fort Larned Lions Club, both of Larned. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Gregory L. Smith, James E. "Bub" Smith Jr. and Steven K. Smith, all of Larned; three daughters, Julie M. Atteberry and Debra G. Harbert, both of Larned, and Sheri L. Smith of Olathe; three brothers, Gary Smith, Doug Smith and Curtis Smith, all of Larned; two sisters, Patsy Mull of Great Bend and Sara Smith of St. John; 21 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Marlene Hamilton. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. John Drosendahl officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, all at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to Larned Emergency Medical Service, in care of the funeral home. April 19, 2001

Hazel I. Pool 1920-2001
LARNED - Hazel I. Pool, 81, died April 17 at Larned Healthcare and Living Center in Larned. She was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Great Bend, the daughter of John W. and Bessie Huddleston Lacy. She married Hermon Leo Pool November 1957 in Oklahoma. He died April 4, 1973. A resident of Larned, coming from Dodge City, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Allen Wayne Moomey; one brother, Harold Lacy of Maryland; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Lacy; and two sisters, Mary VonFeldt and Alice Lacy. There will be no funeral or visitation. Cremation has been arranged. A private family inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Beckwith Morturary in Larned. April 19, 2001

William Edward 'Bill' Baldwin 1924-2001
JETMORE - William Edward "Bill" Baldwin, 76, died April 16 at his home in Jetmore. He was born July 7, 1924, in Eliasville, Texas, the son of William High and Thresa McAlpin Baldwin. He married Virginia Greenway Zimmerman Aug. 17, 1974, in Jetmore. A resident of Jetmore since 1951, he was a farm laborer and well driller. Baldwin was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Jetmore and the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; three stepsons, Milford Zimmerman of Salina, John Zimmerman of Gatesville, Texas, and Frank W. Zimmerman of Junction City; two stepdaughters, Sheryl Ellis of Garfield and Jana Freed of Otis; one brother, Ervin Baldwin of Sayre, Okla.; three sisters, Estella York and Syble Sweet, both of Sayre, and Hattie Heim of Altus, Okla.; 10 step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Baldwin and Ralph Baldwin; and one sister, Helen Baldwin. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Jo Clipson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lone Oak cemetery in Sayre, with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to Bill Baldwin Memorial Fund, in care of Beckwith Funeral Home. April 18, 2001

Virginia Lee 'Ginger' Azzaro 1940-2001
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Virginia Lee "Ginger" Azzaro, 60, died April 5. She was born June 8, 1940, in Bison, the daughter of Henry P. and Mary M. Popp. She was a resident of San Antonio, coming from Bison. Mrs. Azzaro was a member of River City Community Church of San Antonio. Survivors include three sons, Sean Azzaro, Michael Azzaro and Rome Azzaro, all of San Antonio; one daughter, Lena Mosti of San Antonio; one stepdaughter, Adele Azzaro of Miami, Fla.; one brother, Richard Popp of Little River; four sisters, Alma Lech of Arlington Heights, Ill., Ruby Wells and Geneva Steinert, both of Great Bend, and Betty Wiziarde of Little River; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Popp and Elmer Popp. Memorial services were held April 8 at the church. Porter Loring Mortuary of San Antonio was in charge of funeral arrangements. April 18, 2001

Rose Ann Hoadley Lindsey 1938-2001
Rose Ann Hoadley Lindsey, 62, of Great Bend died April 17 at her home. She was born April 19, 1938, in Great Bend, the daughter of George and Hilda Slankard Hoadley. She married Roy Leon Lindsey Oct. 9, 1954, in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a custodian for two years for USD 428 and worked for Regis Inventory for 13 years. Mrs. Lindsey was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and Eagles Auxiliary, both of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Roy Leon Lindsey Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; four daughters, Nina Dove and Donna Howard, both of Cottonwood, Ariz., Teresa Seachris of Great Bend and Sharon Bieberle of Larned; one sister, Lorraine Johnson of Great Bend; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Dean Robinson and Hilda Mae Starkey. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fryberger Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will be at Golden Belt cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from 7-8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Hospice, in care of the mortuary. April 18, 2001

Reta J. Hardten Plowman 1933-2001
BELLEVUE, Wash. - Reta J. Hardten Plowman, 68, died April 14. She was born March 13, 1933, in Claflin, the daughter of Fred and Naomi Nagel Hardten. She was a 1951 graduate of Claflin High School. She married William S. Plowman Aug. 19, 1951, in Claflin. A resident of Bellevue for 36 years, coming from Claflin, she was a bookkeeper. Mrs. Plowman was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Bellevue. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, David R. Plowman of Sammamish, Wash., and Dr. Greg D. Plowman of San Carlos, Calif.; one daughter, Ronna J. Bell of Eatonville, Wash.; two brothers, Ronald D. Hardten of Leawood and Gerald R. Hardten of Claflin; and eight grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Mary P. Boyd officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Reta J. Plowman Memorial, in care of the church, and the ADRC Alzheimer Research, in care of the University of Washington, Box 358220, Seattle, WA 98199. April 18, 2001

Nancy E. Kelso Gates 1930-2001
CHASE - Nancy E. Kelso Gates, 70, died April 13 at her residence in Chase. She was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Cleveland, Okla., the daughter of Thomas Edward and Gladys Ruth Shepard Kelso. She married Raymond Arthur Gates Jan. 15, 1946, in Lyons. He died July 24, 1994. A lifetime resident of Chase, she was a retired certified nurses' aide and homemaker. Mrs. Gates was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Donald Gates of Nephi, Utah, and Terry Gates of Bonner Springs; five daughters, Sharon Douglas and Brenda Boatwright, both of Chase, Neva Anderson of Stanton, Calif., Kellie Kerns of Nephi and Jennifer Matlock of Japan; two sisters, Donna Mecum of Edwardsville and Pat Bieberle of Ellinwood; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers; four sisters; and two granddaughters. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons with the Rev. Larry Weatherman officiating. Burial will be at Chase Springdale cemetery in Chase. Friends may call until 5 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Rice/Reno County, in care of the funeral home. Myrtle LeuDell Trott 1906-2001
ELLINWOOD - Myrtle LeuDell Trott, 95, died April 16 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born Jan. 3, 1906, in Little River, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Brown Deeds. She was a 1924 graduate of Little River High School. She married Walter A. Trott Oct. 10, 1925, at Little River. He died May 5, 1983. A lifetime Rice and Barton County resident, she was co-owner of Trott's Drug Store of Ellinwood. Mrs. Trott was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Art Club, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Matrow of Ellinwood; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Bill Wolf officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bean cemetery in Little River. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. April 17, 2001

James 'Jay' Naylor 1943-2001
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - James "Jay" Naylor, 58, died April 12 at his home. He was born Jan. 28, 1943, in Great Bend. He attended Great Bend schools before graduating from Wheatridge High School in Denver, Colo. He married Lynn Kjelsrud in 1971. They divorced in 1984. He married Kathy Naughten in 1992. A resident of Great Falls, he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad in Great Falls. Naylor served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother, Rose Naylor of Denver; one daughter, Taryn Naylor of Portland, Ore.; one stepson, Joel Kegel of Missoula, Mont.; and one stepdaughter Candi Kegel of Billings, Mont., and one brother, Terry Naylor of Great Bend. Funeral was today at Croxford and Sons Funeral Home in Great Falls. Cremation took place after funeral. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Traveling Fund in care of Ernie Rutherford of Great Falls or the Jerry Deutsch Scholarship Fund, in care of Terry Naylor of Great Bend. April 17, 2001

Odee M. Murphy 1916-2001
Odee M. Murphy, 84, of Great Bend died April 16 at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation in Wichita. She was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Odin, the daughter of Alois and Hattie H. Frenzl Klug. She married James P. Murphy February 1947 in Great Bend. He died Aug. 1, 1989. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Murphy was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Michael J. Murphy of Divide, Colo.; one brother, Edward Klug of Great Bend; two sisters, Cecil McClure of Wichita and Dorothy Mayer of Springfield, Mass.; and four grandsons. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home. April 17, 2001

Kelvin R. 'Kelly' Sell 1928-2001
STAFFORD - Kelvin R. "Kelly" Sell, 72, died April 15 at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born July 31, 1928, in Stafford, the son of Reuben and Marie Drummond Sell. He was a 1947 graduate of Stafford High School. A lifetime resident of Stafford, he was owner/operator of Kelly's Service Station in Stafford. Sell was a member of American Legion in Stafford. He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include one son, Mike Sell of Stafford; one daughter, Julie Sell Dechant of Stafford; three brothers, Robert Sell and James Sell, both of Loveland, Colo., and Darwin Sell of Stafford; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Stafford Educational Foundation Athletic Fund, in care of the chapel. April 17, 2001

Elva Florence Lick 1915-2001
WHITE CITY - Elva Florence Lick, 85, died April 15 at Plaza West Regional Health Center in Topeka. She was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Mitchell County, the daughter of Annis James and Anna M. Pestinger Spears. She married George Lick Oct. 1, 1940, in Hunter. He died Jan. 9, 1977. A resident of White City since 1994, coming from Hunter, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Lick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hunter. Survivors include one son, Jerald Lick of White City; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Darrell Alan Lick. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood cemetery in Hunter with the Rev. Gerald Radtke officiating. There is no visitation. No memorials are suggested. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Great Bend Family Mortuary. April 17, 2001

Edith Marie Nee 1906-2001
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Edith Marie Nee, 94, died April 7 in Colorado Springs. She was born Aug. 12, 1906, in Runnells, Iowa, the daughter of Meek and Rebecca Waddle Marshall. She married Clyde Cecil Clevenger Sept. 25, 1926. He died. She married John Joseph Nee Oct. 1, 1952. He died. A resident of Colorado Springs, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, James Clevenger; one daughter; Mary Bieberle; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Jean Marie Clevenger, Beverly Ann Crabb and Flora Fleming. Funeral was April 10. She was buried at Evergreen cemetery in Colorado Springs. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church in Colorado Springs, in care of Swan Law Funeral Directors of Colorado Springs. April 17, 2001

John J. Mingenback 1919-2001
John J. Mingenback, DDS, 81, died April 15 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Dec. 17, 1919, in McPherson, the son of Carl F. and Maude S. Drake Mingenback. He married Arlene A. Cavert March 4, 1944, in Denver, Colo. A resident of Great Bend since 1950, coming from Omaha, Neb., he practiced dentistry in Great Bend for 47 years . Mingenback was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Great Bend and past senior warden, 50-year member of the Great Bend Noon Lions Club; past president of the Kansas Dental Association and Central District Dental Association; delegate to the American Dental Association; served on the Dental Laboratories Relations Committee, International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was past president of Barton County Community Concert Association and chairman of the Cheyenne District of Boy Scouts of America. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Michael K. Mingenback of Emporia and Mark G. Mingenback of Great Bend; one daughter, Marla Mingenback Sheiner of Phoenix, Ariz.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Mingenback Zimmerman. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Drs. Tom Keith and Konrad Rock officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery with full military honors. Friends may call from 5-9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, all at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the John Mingenback Dental Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home. April 16, 2001
