Otis Meade Arnel, Sr. 1933-2001
Otis Meade Arnel, 68, of Great Bend, died June 9 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born April 21, 1933, at Bunker Hill, the son of Basil Edward and Margaret Esther Lewis Arnel. He married Shirley L. Gabbert March 18, 1956, at Hagerman, N.M. He worked for the Barton County road maintenance department. Arnel was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Otis Meade Arnel Jr. of Hutchinson and David Allen Arnel of Phoenix, Arz.; two daughters, Loyce Jean Finnigan and Carol Sue Irving, both of Great Bend; two brothers, James Arnel of Wichita and Louis Wayne Arnel of Lindsborg; three sister, Betty Perry of Grove, Okla., Wilma Burris of Liberal, and Mac Dean Smith of Pawnee Rock; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Arnel and Donald Arnel; and one sister, Opal Arnel. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blooming Grove cemetery in Bunker Hill with the Rev. David Hartsell officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home. June 10, 2001

Mary Ellen Burdick 1918-2001
HESSTON - Mary Ellen Burdick, 82, died June 7 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. She was born Oct. 23, 1918, at Council Grove, the daughter of Arthur E. and Agnes F. Rowland Smith. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and Sterling College. She married Alvin Burdick Sept. 25, 1938, at Hutchinson. He died Nov. 16, 1986. A resident of Hesston, coming from the Holyrood area, she was a substitute teacher in and around the Holyrood. Mrs. Burdick was a member of United Church of Christ in Holyrood and of several ladies' groups. Survivors include one son, David B. Burdick of Valley Center; three daughters, E. Dianne Sisk of Lawrence, Lynn E. Lamkin of LaPorte, Texas, and Kim R. Bergin of Farmington, N.M.; one brother, Alvin L. Smith of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis R. Smith. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schowalter Villa in Hesston with the Chaplain Beverly Baumgartner officiating. Graveside services will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Holyrood. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel at Newton. Family will greet friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to National Parkinson's Disease Foundation, in care of the funeral home. June 8, 2001

Leora Irene Lea 1952-2001
Leora Irene Lea, 48, of Great Bend, died June 6 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Dec. 31, 1952, at Prescott, Ariz., the daughter of Robert and Doris Guyett Wheeler. A longtime resident of Great Bend, she worked for the Great Bend Tribune. She was a member of First Church of God, Eagles Auxiliary and WIBC bowling. Survivors include one daughter, Frankie Pelster of Great Bend; her mother, Doris Wheeler of Great Bend; one brother, Robert Wheeler of Aurora, Colo.; three sisters, Jackie Hughey of Lakewood, Colo., Roberta Goodwin of Hutchinson and Jill Johnson of Great Bend; and two grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. Inurnment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of the funeral home. June 8, 2001

Bernard N. Weber 1920-2001
CENTRAL POINT, Ore. - Bernard N. Weber, 81, died May 22 at Providence Medical Center in Medford, Ore. He was born April 13, 1920, in Dubuque, the son of Pete and Mary Feltes Weber. He married Dorothy Fallon July 22, 1967, in Sparks, Nev. A resident of Central Point since 1978, coming from Fremont, Calif., he raised cattle and owned and operated a hay baling operation. Weber was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Medford, Farm Bureau of Jackson County, Oregonians in Action of Portland and Tractor Club No. 81 in Central Point. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, serving in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Betty Carter of Plano, Texas, and Ann Marie Weber of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Sister Stella Weber of Mesa, Ariz., and Marge Mayer of Wichita; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lavern Weber; and one sister, Florentine Weber. Funeral was May 29 at the church with the Rev. William Dillard officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford. Conger-Morris Mortuary in Medford was in charge of arrangements. June 7, 2001

John M. Riedel Jr. 1940-2001
SALINA - John M. Riedel Jr., 61, died June 5 at Holiday Resort Care Center in Salina. He was born May 7, 1940, in Walker, the son of John Michael and Catherine Scheck Riedel. He received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1962 and a master's degree in elementary education in 1969, both from Fort Hays State University. He married Marilyn Truan July 11, 1964, at Gorham. A resident of Salina, coming from Hays, he had been a teacher and principal and was a retired general manager of School Specialty in Salina. Riedel was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church of Salina, National School Supply and Equipment Association and Breakfast Bandits Ambucs, and a past member of several education organizations and Toastmasters. He was Mr. Ambuc in 1989-1990. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, J.L. Riedel of Salina; two daughters, Amy Riedel-O'Brien of Salina and Ann Riedel, of the home; two brothers, Frank Riedel of Walker and Celly Riedel of Shawnee Mission; four sisters, Maggie Johnston of Osawatomie, Aggie Leiker of Hays, Katie Windholz of Quinter and Josie Braun of Victoria; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Herb Riedel, Alvin Ray Riedel and an infant, Alvin John Riedel; and three sisters, Mandy Riedel, Lena Riedel and Marie Leiker. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Salina. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Walker with Sister Rose Walters officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Ann cemetery in Walker. Family will receive friends following the vigil at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Hall and prior to memorial service at St. Ann Catholic Church at Walker. Memorials are suggested to St. Ellizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church Building Fund, 1000 Burr Oak Lane, Salina, KS 67401, or Breakfast Bandits Ambucs, P.O. Box 1952, Salina, KS 67501. Beulah Frohreich 1915-2001
HOLYROOD - Beulah Frohreich, 84, died June 6 at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Bridgeport, Ill., the daughter of Pearl Gilbert and Flossie Carnes Bennett. She married Victor Delbert Frohreich June 3, 1937, in Holyrood. He died May 8, 1983. A lifetime resident of Holyrood, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Frohreich was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Holyrood. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ann Kempke of Hutchinson and Barbara Reid of Overland Park; one brother, Ralph Bennett of Holyrood; one sister, Mildred Hughes of Holyrood; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. John Sharp officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth and from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. June 7, 2001

Clara Wallace 1918-2001
LA CROSSE - Clara Wallace, 83, died May 30 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was born March 9, 1918, at Alexander, the daughter of Philip and Mary Catherine George Schwartzkopf. She was a 1936 graduate of Alexander High School and attended Fort Hays College. She married Clyde Lewis Wallace Aug. 12, 1941. He died in the Korean War. A resident of Prairie Village, coming from Dodge City, she worked at Eckles Department Store and as a bookkeeper for Dodge City Cooperative Exchange for 19 years. Mrs. Wallace was a member of Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village. Survivors include one son, Darryl Wallace, MD, of Fairway; two brothers, William "Bill" Schwartzkopf of Larned and Carl Schwartzkopf of Wichita; and three granddaughters. She was preceded in death by one brother, Herman Schwartzkopf; and one sister, Freda Clarke. Graveside services were Saturday at Nekoma Union Township cemetery in Nekoma with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Memorials are suggested to Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City, Mo., in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. June 7, 2001

Anna A. Steiner 1914-2001
ODIN - Anna A. Steiner, 87, died June 4 at her residence in Odin. She was born April 15, 1914, in Odin, the daughter of Alois F. and Regina Hermann Prosser. She married August A. Steiner April 6, 1937, in Odin. He died April 12, 1954. A lifelong resident of Odin, she was a homemaker, she worked for 20 years in the Odin School lunch program and for three years at St. Johns School in Hoisington and was also a housekeeper for 10 years at the Hoisington Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Steiner was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Odin, Clara Barton Auxiliary and Pink Lady Program, both of Hoisington, KS and KPERS. Survivors include two sons, Donald L. Steiner of Hawesville, Ky. and Leon J. Steiner of Hoisington; one daughter, Mary Ann Brush of Wichita; three brothers, William Prosser of Ellinwood, Joe Prosser of Kinsley and Julius Prosser of Odin; four sisters, Mary Birzer of Hutchinson, Tillie Kramer of Great Bend, Helen Kaiser of Hoisington and Catherine Schremmer of Hays; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia M. Stout; four brothers, Tony Prosser, John Prosser, Louie Prosser and Leonard Prosser; three sisters, Eleanor Kingston, Cecilia Tipperman and Gean Rome; and one granddaughter, Anna Marie Brush. Due to the storm in Hoisington, the family resides and can be reached at 421 N. Main in Claflin. Vigil service followed by Altar Society Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Pascal Klein, Don Debes and August Moeder officiating. Burial will be at Holy Family cemetery in Odin. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Clara Barton Hospital in care of the funeral home. June 6, 2001

Thelma Ernestine Ward 1906-2001
Thelma Ernestine Ward, 94, of Great Bend, died June 2 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. She was born Nov. 25, 1906, in Dodge City, the daughter of Fred and Lizzie Riggs Cox. She married Walter Franklin Ward Oct. 14, 1920 in Siver Cliff Colo. He died Oct. 4, 1939. A resident of Great Bend, she was a nursing home cook. Survivors include two sons, Leonard Ward of Castle Rock, Colo. and Melvin Ward of Pueblo, Colo.; two daughters, Grace Fanatia of Great Bend and Ida Kruger of Olmitz; one sister, Corie Cox of Mont Rose, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. There will be no funeral or visitation. Inurnment will be in Eula cemetery in West Clift, Colo. at a later date. Memorials are not suggested. Arrangements are by Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory. June 5, 2001

Sara Jane Smith 1940-2001
LARNED - Sara Jane Smith, 61, died June 3 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. She was born March 10, 1940, in Larned, the daughter of William Edward and Florence Dipman Smith. She was a 1958 graduate of Larned High School and a 1964 graduate of Dodge City Community College Nursing program. A resident of Larned, she was a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Larned. Survivors include three brothers, Gary D. Smith, Doug Smith and Curtis Smith, all of Larned; and one sister, Patsy Mull of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by one brother, James E. Smith Sr.; and one sister, Ruth Marlene Hamilton. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. John C. Drosendahl officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, both at Morell Funeral Home in Larned, and from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home. June 4, 2001

E. Leroy Maggard 1926-2001
HOISINGTON - E. Leroy Maggard, 75, died June 2 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Feb. 21, 1926, at Quinlan, Okla., the son of William Walter and Rosa Sanders Maggard. He married Melba Spires July 1, 1957, in Clayton, N.M. A resident of Hoisington, coming from Liberal, he was a retired farmer. Maggard was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Liberal. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Debbie Hatcher of Plattsmouth, Neb.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Willie Maggard; and one sister, Vera O'Dell. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association or American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home. June 4, 2001

Albert J. Younger 1924-2001
HOISINGTON - Albert J. Younger, 77, died June 2 at Hoisington Rehabilitation Center in Hoisington. He was born Jan. 1, 1924, in Gorham, the son of Martin and Anna Lauber Younger. He graduated from Hoisington High School. He married Lorraine Reif Sept. 25, 1981, in Great Bend. A resident of Hoisington, coming from Kansas City, Mo., he was a retired carpenter. Younger was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Hoisington; Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Carpenters Union Club, all of Kansas City, Mo.; and Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge, both of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one stepson, Rickey Schwein of Walterboro, S.C.; five daughters, Kathi Dorsey of Blue Springs, Mo., Barbara Weaver and Karen Dyche, both of Shawnee, Judy Younger and Peggy Flanagan, both of Kansas City, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Kim Spickard of Wichita; one brother, Jerome Younger of Emporia; three sisters, Martina Luebbers of Claflin, Mary Ann Funk of Galatia and Betty Shafer of Royce City, Texas; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Younger and Leonard Younger. Vigil service will be at 6:30 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home. June 4, 2001

Marie V. Hirsch 1904-2001
ELLINWOOD - Marie V. Hirsch, 97, died June 3 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. She was born March 31, 1904, in Ellinwood, the daughter of Henry and Louise Charlotte Mellies Hirsch. She attended Bethany College and graduated from the University of Kansas. A lifelong resident of Ellinwood, she taught music in Marysville. She was a member and organist of Immanuel United Church of Christ and member of Order of the Eastern Star, both of Ellinwood. Survivors include two nieces, Mary Jo Cunningham of Ellinwood and Kathleen Hildebrand of Hutchinson; and one great-niece. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 5-8 tonight and from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, all at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. June 4, 2001
