Janet Kaye Beckwith 1954-2001

LARNED - Janet Kaye Beckwith, 47, died Dec. 7 at her residence in Larned.
She was born Nov. 19, 1954, in Pineville, La., the daughter of Jerry W. and
Lois R. Scott Creel. She married Kim M. Beckwith Aug. 17, 1974, in Larned. A
resident of Larned since 1970, coming from Sawyer, she was a homemaker and
newspaper inserter for the Tiller and Toiler.
Mrs. Beckwith was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Modern Homemakers
FCE, both of Larned.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Aaron Michael Beckwith
of Larned; one daughter, Jennifer Lynn Nelson of Wrightsville, Penn.; her
parents of Duncan, Okla.; two brothers, Jeffery Creel of Elk City, Okla.,
and Gregory Creel of Sheridan, Wyo.; and one sister, Pamela Sue Cannon of
Vernal, Utah.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned,
with the Rev. John Drosendahl officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight
and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the mortuary. Burial will
be at Larned Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Larned Lady Indians
Basketball Program, in care of the mortuary.

Margaret 'Ruthe' Duncan 1920-2001

Margaret 'Ruthe' Duncan, 81, of Great Bend, died Dec. 8 at Via Christi
Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Aug.
18, 1920, in Liberal, the daughter of William Edward and Mabelle Nora Cole
Robbins. She married Vaughn A Duncan Dec. 27, 1948, in Garfield. A resident
of Great Bend since 1968, coming from Pratt, she was a retired school
teacher, having taught in La Crosse, Garfield, Pratt and Great Bend.
Mrs. Duncan was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, Cosmopolitan Study
Club, Barton County Teachers Association and Barton County Historical
Society, all of Great Bend, KNEA, Kansas Retired Teachers Association and
former treasurer of Garfield American Legion Auxillary Post 300.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Von Stewart Duncan of
Hudson, Stephen Ray Duncan of Great Bend and David Brent Duncan of Wichita;
three sisters, Helen Winifred Baier of Seward, Alice Lucille 'Lucy' Templer
of Leoti and Wilma Lenore 'Billie' Beck of Mahomet, Ill.; and eight
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Cole
Robbins; one sister, Marian Frances Robbins; and one grandson, Brandon Nash
Duncan.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Jana Baxter
officiating. Burial will be at Larned cemetery in Larned. Friends may call
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral
Home and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, at the church. Memorials
are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Mae Suedekum 1910-2001

Mae Suedekum, 91, of Great Bend died Dec. 7 at her residence in Great Bend.
She was born Feb. 10, 1910 at Pulaski County, Ky., the daughter of Caleb and
Anna Howsen Marcum. She married Harve Suedekum March 4, 1932 at Kingman. He
died Nov. 30, 1985. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Thornton, Colo.,
she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Suedekum was a member of Central Baptist Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin Suedekum of Tempe, Ariz., and Alvin
Suedekum of Gillette, Wyo.; one daughter, Jean Kimber of Great Bend; seven
grandchildren; four great-grandchlidren; and one great-great-grandchild. She
was preceded in death by one brother, Theron Marcum; and one sister, Mabel
Cinquangrana.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Gordan E. Rhodes officiating. Burial will be
at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today,
and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to the church in care of the funeral home.

Mabel Huseman 1908-2001

ELLSWORTH - Mabel Huseman, 93, died Dec. 7 at Wilson Nursing Center in
Wilson. She was born Aug. 17, 1908 at Frankfort, the daughter of Oliver and
Ethel Turley Newsome. She married Herman Huseman at Kanopolis. A resident of
Ellsworth since 1912, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Huseman was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, AARP
and Presbyterian Women.
Survivors include one daughter, Ramona Durbin of Great Bend; 12
grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Carl Huseman and Casper Huseman; and
one daughter, Daisy Conyers.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth, with
the Rev. Mark Kayser officiating. Burial will be at Ellsworth cemetery in
Ellsworth. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today, and 8 a.m. until service
time on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the nursing
center or the church both in care of the funeral home.

Helen Joan Fuqua 1930-2001

SEWARD - Helen Joan Fuqua, 71, died Dec. 6 at Via Christi St. Francis
Regional Medical Center in Wichita. She was born Oct. 21, 1930 at Radium,
the daughter of William L. and Elsie Fern Smith. She was a 1948 graduate of
St. John High School. She married Harold Robert Fuqua Oct. 2, 1948 at
Radium. A resident Seward, she was a homemaker, a retired Wal-Mart employee
in Great Bend, and an assistant postal worker in Seward.
Mrs. Fuqua was a member of First United Methodist Church in St. John, and a
Republican Committee Woman.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Robert L. Fuqua of
Dayton, Md.; two daughters, Joan Dewey of Seward, and Denise R. Schwartz of
Great Bend; one brother, William Smith of McKinney, Texas; two sisters,
Carolyn Ives of St. John and Marjorie Smith of Seward; and four
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Florence Keenan.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the Rev.
Wade Russell officiating. Burial will be at Eden Valley cemetery in Seward.
Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at the chapel in St. John. Memorials
are suggested to Seward City Park in care of the chapel.

Curtis Martinie 1936-2001

MANHATTAN - Curtis Martinie, 65, died Dec. 5 at Breckenridge, Colo. He was
born June 19, 1936 at Lyons, the son of Earl and Edith Miller Martinie. He
was a 1954 graduate of Lyons High School. He married Ann Palmer on June 1,
1956 at Lyons. A resident of Manhattan, coming from Lyons, he was a farmer,
landscaper and carpenter.
Martinie was a member of First United Methodist Church, a Board of Trustee
member, and Methodist Men, all of Manhattan, past president of the Lyons
Chamber of Commerce in Lyons, and a member of the Sons of Sonlight Quartet.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Doug Martinie and Brian
Martinie both of Manhattan; two daughters, Brenda Friess of Great Bend, and
Debra Martinie of Wichita; one brother, Sam Martinie of Shawnee Mission;
four sisters, Genevieve Davis of Wichita, Arleen Lentz of Hutchinson,
Rosleen Deam of Sacramento, Calif., and Mary Lou Palmer of Independence; and
four grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Lyons,
with the Revs. Jim Reed and Cindy Watson officiating. Burial will be at
Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. tonight at Sillin
Funeral Home in Lyons. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart
Association or the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan.

Vincent Paul Nielson 1935-2001

MACKSVILLE - Vincent Paul Nielson, 66, died Dec. 7 at Southwind Hospice in
Pratt. He was born Aug. 29, 1935 at Spearville, the son of Hans Sr. and Mary
Francis Nielson. A resident of rural Macksville since 1979, he was a hay
farmer, stockman and trucker.
Nielson was a member of the Catholic Church in Jetmore.
Survivors include three brothers, Louis Neilson of Wichita, Robert Neilson
and Hans Nielson Jr. of Jetmore; one sister, Annie Marie Boren of Canton,
Texas. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Josh Neilson and John
Nielson.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairmount cemetery in
Jetmore, with the Rev. Henry F. Hilderbrandt officiating. Friends may call
from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in Macksville. Memorials are suggested
to Southwind Hospice in Pratt.

Joan D. Keener 1933-2001

Joan D. Keener, 68, of Great Bend, died Dec. 5 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 3, 1933, at
Ransom, the daughter of Harry W. and Mildred Wisehart Elliott. She married
Bill Keener May 27, 1951, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since
1992, coming from Mullinville, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Keener was a member of King United Methodist Church in Great Bend and
Order of Eastern Star of Rush Center, and was a library volunteer in
Mullinville and Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Adam Keener of
Indianapolis, Ind.; two daughters, Debbie Winn of Wichita and Peggie Post
of Westmoreland; her mother of Great Bend; one brother, Robert Elliott of
Great Bend; one sister, Lois Hickel of Lawrence; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one infant brother, Darold Duane Elliott.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend with the Rev. Bill Wolf officiating. Burial will be at Great
Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service
time Saturday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the
church, in care of the funeral home.

Lidwina Werth 1915-2001

Lidwina Werth, 86, of Great Bend, died Dec. 2 at Cherry Village Benevolence
in Great Bend. She was born July 22, 1915, in Liebenthal, the daughter of
Peter and Barbara Herrman Hepp. She married Ferdinand Werth May 4, 1936, in
Liebenthal. He died in 1987. A lifelong resident of Barton and Rush
counties, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Werth was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include three sons, Ferdinand Werth Jr. of South Hutchinson,
Vernon Werth of Alamuchy, N.J., and Robert Werth of Denver, Colo.; one
brother, Leonard Hepp of La Crosse; five grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Auther Hepp;
and one sister, Albina Degenhardt.
Funeral was Thursday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein
officiating. Burial was at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Memorials are
suggested to American Diabetes Association, in care of Fryberger Mortuary
in Great Bend.

Robert M. Hawkins 1919-2001

MANHATTAN - Robert M. Hawkins, 82, died Dec. 3 at Mercy Health Center in
Manhattan. He was born April 11, 1919, in Sterling, the son of Seth H. Sr.
and Georgia Viola Waters Hawkins. He was a 1937 graduate of Sterling High
School and attended Sterling College. He married Anna M. Geist Jan. 5,
1948, in Great Bend. A resident of Manhattan, coming from Lyons, he worked
for railroads, feed mills, salt plants and in the oil fields for several
years and was in the maintenance and custodian department of Lyons
Manufacturing Plant in Lyons for more than 27 years. He retired in 1983 and
later worked as a custodian for USD 405 in Lyons from 1983 until his
retirement in 1991.
Hawkins was a member of American Legion Post 129 in Lyons. He was a U.S.
Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a radar technician.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four daughters, Sherry L. Sheridan
of Rensselaer, N.Y., Georgia M. Mulanax of Manhattan, Bessie A. Day of
Wamego and Susie E. Burt of Great Bend; two brothers, Seth H. Hawkins Jr.
of Holliday, Fla., and Frank R. Hawkins of Wichita; two sisters, Betty
Lawson of Sterling and Anne McCamant of Hutchinson; 15 grandchildren; and
11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with full military honors will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at
Valley View Memorial Gardens in Manhattan with the Rev. Wilbur Buckley
officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8 tonight at
Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home in Manhattan. Friends and family are invited to
meet at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Saturday to form a procession to the
cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Homecare & Hospice of Manhattan, the
American Diabetes Association or Rice County Council on Aging, all in care
of the funeral home.
