Rev. Andrew McGovern 1927-2002
WICHITA - The Rev. Andrew McGovern, 74, died Jan. 15. He was born Aug. 29, 1927, in Bundarra, Carrigallen, County Leitrim, Ireland. He received his philosophy and theology training at St. Peter's College in Wexford, Ireland. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Rev. James Staunton of the Diocese of Ferns, Ireland June 7, 1953. Recruited out of seminary for service in Kansas, he served in Great Bend, Ellinwood, Burdett, Kiowa, Beaver, Larned, Seward, Claflin, St. John, Odin and Dubuque. From 1980 to 1996, McGovern served as diocesan director for the Propagation of Faith. Survivors include six brothers, Patrick McGovern and James McGovern, both of Ireland, Thomas McGovern, Peter McGovern, Gerard McGovern and Anthony McGovern, all of London, England; and two sisters, Brigid Reynolds of Ireland and Mary McGovern of New York, N.Y. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Spiritual Life Center, St. Elizabeth Chapel in Wichita. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel in Wichita. Burial will be at St. Joseph Parish cemetery in Aughavas, Carrigallen, County Leitrim, Ireland. There is no visitation listed. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, American Parkinsonšs Disease Association or Dodge City Cathedral Fund, all in care of Downing and Lahey Mortuary East in Wichita. Jan. 17, 2002

Mildred M. Rein 1912-2002
MCCRACKEN - Mildred M. Rein, 89, died Jan. 15 at Wesley Tower, Ralph Thorne Center, in Hutchinson. She was born July 13, 1912, in McCracken, the daughter of Owen and Jane McCormick McKittrick. She married Edward Rein June 3, 1934, in McCracken. He died July 30, 1962. A lifelong resident of McCracken, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Rein was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altar Society, Alumni Association and Golden Agers Senior Center, all of McCracken. Survivors include one son, Jim Rein of Buhler; three daughters, Phyllis Higgins of McCracken, Sheryl McCaskey of Great Bend and Maddy Petz of Buhler; one sister, Winifred Gaschler of Salina; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Donny Rein and Danny Rein; one brother, Pat McKittrick; three sisters, Rose Reiss, Elizabeth Gaschler and Dorothy Smith; and one granddaughter, Brenda Peters. Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be at McCracken Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, both at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, and after 5 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, at the church. Family will be present from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the church to receive friends. Casket will be closed. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Heritage, Wesley Towers, Ralph Thorne Center or Golden Agers of McCracken, all in care of the funeral home. Jan. 17, 2002

Vernon 'Bud' Reese 1920-2002
LARNED - Vernon "Bud" Reese, 81, died Jan. 16 at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. He was born April 9, 1920, north-east of Gypsum, the son of Frank and Rosa Walker Reese. He married Dolly Kaehn Jan. 26, 1948, in Emporia. A resident of Larned, he worked for the State of Kansas for more than 38 years, first for the Department of Corrections in Hutchinson and later for the Social Rehabilitation Services. He was among the first registered men nurses accepted by the American National Red Cross in the United States and Canada. Reese was a past member of BPO Elks 450 and Loyal Order of Moose 982. He helped organize the Hutchinson Kennel Club in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He taught dog obedience classes for 18 years in Hutchinson. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Benji Reese of Larned; two daughters, Jill Garza of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Mindy Ploeckelmann of Douglas; two sisters, VeroBelle Hein of Wichita and Florence Day of Salina; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alanson "Bill" Reese, Orville "Oli" Reese and Howard Reese; and two sisters, Elvena Mortimer and Iva White. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned, with the Rev. Jack Singer officiating. Burial will be at Poheta cemetery in Gypsum. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 17, 2002

Florence M. Birzer Parsons 1931-2002
FLORISSANT, Mo. - Florence M. Birzer Parsons, 70, died Jan. 8 in Florissant. She was born Oct. 10, 1931, in Great Bend, the daughter of John L. and Isabel Frenzl Birzer. She married Corydon A. Parsons April 27, 1952. He died in August 1992. A resident of Florissant, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Birzer was a member of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both in Florissant. Survivors include one son, James Parsons of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, JoAnn Huff of Clinton, Iowa, Sue Martin of St. Charles, Mo., and Mary Parsons of St. Peter, Mo.; one brother, Lawrence Birzer of Ellinwood; three sisters, Ursaline Penka of Pratt, Gerry Westfall of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Marguerite Birzer of Wichita; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Krier. Funeral was Monday in Florissant. Memorials are suggested to BJC Hospice, in care of Hutchens Mortuary in Florissant. Jan. 17, 2002

Ellen Francis Twombly 1912-2002
STAFFORD - Ellen Francis Twombly, 88, died Jan. 15 at Stafford District Hospital in Stafford. She was born Feb. 20, 1912, in Stafford, the daughter of James Sheridan and Ermina Francis Franklin. She married Andrew Twombly March 9, 1927, in Larned. He died April 2, 1967. A longtime resident of Stafford, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. Mrs. Twombly was a member of First Christian Church in Stafford. Survivors include three sons, Albert Twombly of Banning, Calif., William Twombly of Green Valley, Ariz., and James Twombly of Stafford; one daughter, Mary Ellen Bender of Los Angeles, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Stafford Cemetery, with the Rev. Karen Ault officiating. There is no visitation or memorials listed. Minnis Chapel in Stafford is in charge of arrangements. Jan. 17, 2002

Jane P. Bronson 1935-2002
LARNED - Jane P. Bronson, 66, died Jan. 15 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Jan. 27, 1935, in Satanta, the daughter of Clemente and Lucille Mariche Perez. She married Elmer F. Bronson May 9, 1963, in Larned. A lifelong resident of Larned, she worked as a nurse aid at Hammond Holiday Home and in food service for Larned Middle School. Mrs. Bronson was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned. Survivors include three sons, Tony Bronson and Wayne Bronson, both of Larned, and Billy Bronson of Great Bend; one daughter, Jenny Rector of Larned; eight brothers, Lupe Perez, Frank Perez, Manuel Perez, John Perez, Tony Perez, Raymond Perez and Terry Perez, all of Larned, and Felix Perez of Hutchinson; three sisters, Trina Ruiz, Nora Sanders and Linda Garcia, all of Larned; five grandchildren, Tiffany Kraft, Kasie Rector, Kelly Rector, Bryce Bronson and Breauna Bronson; three step-grandchildren, John Stiers, Timmy Stiers and Shela Stiers; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Pete Perez. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, in care of the mortuary. Ruth B. Wilson 1909-2002
LARNED - Ruth B. Wilson, 92, died Jan. 15 at Larned Health Care and Living Center in Larned. She was born June 3, 1909, in Rush County, the daughter of Walter Harrison and Charlotte Fyler Renner. She married Everett M. Wilson Sept. 18, 1934, in Larned. He died June 30, 1990. A resident of Pawnee County since 1934, coming from Rush County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Wilson was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, FCE 50-year member, life member of Order of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Fort Larned Belles and Sunflower Club, all of Larned. Survivors include one son, Merle Wilson of Larned; three daughters, Louise Unruh of Rozel, Darlene Smika of Fort Collins, Colo., and Beth Burke of Rock Port, Mo.; one sister, Dorothy Scheideman of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John Renner, Clifford Renner and Vernon Renner; and two sisters, Barbara Nelson and Alice MacArthur. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with Ken Walker officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the mortuary. Lena Whiteman 1910-2002
MANNFORD, Okla. - Lena Whiteman, 92, died Jan. 15. She was born Jan. 9, 1910, in Greensburg, the daughter of Sam and Eva Schultz Boese. She married Guy Whiteman June 30, 1927, in Ellinwood. He died Feb. 22, 1971. A resident of Mannford, coming from Kansas, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Whiteman was a member of Mannford Assembly of God Church. Survivors include two sons, Floyd Whiteman of Shawnee Mission and Dale Whiteman of Vidalia, La.; one daughter, Olive Heaton of Mannford; two sisters, Clara Huddleston of Larned and Marjorie Andrasek of Garden City; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, Forrest Whiteman and Paul Whiteman; one daughter, Arveta Brosius; seven brothers; and five sisters. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dundee Valley cemetery in Dundee. No visitation or memorials are suggested. Mobley-Dodson Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Jan. 17, 2002

N. Guy Wycoff 1925-2002
RADIUM - N. Guy Wycoff, 76, died Jan. 13 in rural St. John. He was born March 12, 1925, in Pawnee Rock, the son of Paul and Gladys Fox Wycoff. He was a graduate of Radium High School. He married Nina Mae Estopy April 17, 1946, in Radium. She died Jan. 17, 2001. A resident of the Radium community for 45 years, he was a farmer, past owner of Dixie Cream Donut Shop in Goshen, Ind., past dental technician in the U.S. Army and a furniture refinisher. Wycoff was a member of Eden Valley Church of the Brethren, Radium Rangers Senior Center, 17-year member of IOOF Lodge in St. John and Soil Conservation Board member. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. Survivors include one son, Todd Wycoff of St. John; three daughters, Karen Wycoff of Tulsa, Okla., Brenda Mercer and Susan Tucker, both of St. John; three brothers, Miles Wycoff of Windsor, Calif., Billy Wycoff and Bobby Wycoff, both of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three sisters, Vera Witt of Bellflower, Calif., Vena Allen of Sacramento, Calif., and Patty Croff of Redding, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Revs. Matthew Spurgin and David Albright officiating. Burial will be at Pawnee Rock cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel. Jan. 16, 2002

Adelia 'Dale' G. Schremmer 1910-2002
HOISINGTON - Adelia "Dale" G. Schremmer, 91, died Jan. 14 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born Aug. 21, 1910, in Beaver, the daughter of Jac and Mary Ann Meyeres Depiesse. She married August R. Schremmer May 19, 1931, in Beaver. A lifelong resident of Russell and Barton counties, she was a homemaker and head cook for Susank School District 103 until it closed. Mrs. Schremmer was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Hoisington. Survivors include her husband of the home; five sons, Jim Schremmer of Russell, Earl Schremmer of Beaver, Ron Schremmer of Blue Springs, Mo., Bill Schremmer and Gene Schremmer, both of Hoisington; three daughters, Patricia Proksch and Lois Klug, both of Hoisington, and Karen Bishop of Great Bend; four sisters, Sidonia Bartlett of Lakeside, Calif., Elsie Hinkley of El Cajon, Calif., Margaret Elstun of Lyons and Gene Polzin of Hoisington; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Jac Depiesse, Lawrence Depiesse, John Depiesse, Art Depiesse and Earl Depiesse; four sisters, Ann Reif, Viola Depiesse, Marion Kuxhause and Georgia Mae Hildreth; and three grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Schremmer, Brian Proksch and Tammy Bishop. Vigil service followed by an Altar Society rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. John cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hoisington Rehabilitation Center Avery Fund or St. John cemetery Fund, both in care of the funeral home. Jan. 15, 2002

Mabel Mary Newbill Butler 1902-2002
STAFFORD - Mabel Mary Newbill Butler, 99, died Jan. 13 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She was born Sept. 9, 1902, in Rozel, the daughter of Pearl and Josephine Werner Newbill. She was a graduate of Rozel High School and Fort Hays State Teacher's College. She married Dr. Luke Butler May 27, 1927, in Pawnee County. He preceded her in death. A resident of Stafford for most of her life, she was a commerce teacher for Stafford High School. Mrs. Butler was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Delphinian Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Stafford Women's Golf Association and Stafford Women's Bowling League, all of Stafford. Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Lou Baxter of Aspen, Colo., Vesta Marie Wilkins of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Mary Agnes Mathiesen of Denver, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. There is no visitation listed. Alvera M. McCray 1923-2002
SALINA - Alvera M. McCray, 78, died Jan. 13 in Salina. She was born March 31, 1923, in Great Bend, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Demerath Hammeke. She married Thomas E. McCray June 18, 1949, in Hays. A resident of Salina, she worked as a bookkeeper for Dwight Putnam Interior Decorators for 23 years. Mrs. McCray was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and volunteer, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1432 Auxiliary and St. John's Hospital Auxiliary, all of Salina. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Thomas E. McCray Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; four daughters, Cammy Mays and Christi Manley, both of Salina, Connie Miller of Solomon and Corinne McCray of Houston, Texas; one brother, Maurice Hammeke of Great Bend; one sister, Delores Doll of Ellinwood; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ryan Mortuary in Salina. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Salina. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church or Hospice of Dickenson County, both in care of the mortuary. Jan. 15, 2002

Charles Unrein Jr. 1933-2002
HAYS - Charles Unrein Jr., 68, died Jan. 13 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born June 10, 1933, in Schoenchen, the son of Carl and Lidwina Zimmerman Unrein. He married Mary Alice Gross May 4, 1954, in Munjor. A resident of Hays, he was owner and operator of C and C Exploration Company, a truck driver and a farmer. Unrein was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Helen Schmitt Pianalto and Becky Wilcox; four brothers, Laverne Unrein and George Unrein, both of Hays, Lyle Unrein of Greeley, Colo., and Tim Unrein of Kansas City; three sisters, Alice Schmeidler of Hays, Sister Eleanor Unrein of Great Bend and Sister Charlotte Unrein of Salina; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Rohn. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. David Metz officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis cemetery in Munjor. Friends may call from 2-8:30 p.m. today and from 10-10:45 a.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis cemetery Association, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 15, 2002
