Georgia Nadine Bodkins

Georgia Nadine Bodkins, 78, Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Wichita Specialty Hospital. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, in the Latham, Kan., Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday. The family will greet friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Born July 21, 1925, in Cambridge, she was the daughter of Frank Ulmont and Gladys Mildred (White) Williams. She worked at William Newton Hospital in the laundry department for 28 1/2 yeas before retiring in 1987. Survivors include her son, Wilfred D. Bodkins of Winfield; daughter, Phyllis M. Wingert of Burden; brother, Rink Williams of Douglass; sister, Betty Barker of Rose Hill; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons, Steve A. Bodkins and George Bodkins; brothers, Irvin, Paul, Dwayne and Don; sisters, Doris Bodkins and Marietta Van Arsdale.
A memorial as been established for the Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita, 313 South Market, Wichita, KS 67205. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Melvin L. Nellis

Melvin L. Nellis, 79, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at his residence. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at the Parker Cemetery. The Reverend Steve Chambers will officiate. Cremation has been effected. Melvin was born March 24, 1926, in Cambridge, Kan., to Theodore and Sylvia (Glass) Nellis. He worked as a plumber-boilermaker for Billings Plumbing for 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons, Lee, and his wife, Karen, of Williston, Vt., and Alan, and his wife, Patricia, of Fulton, Mo.; a brother, Ed Nellis, of Linwood, Kan.; a sister, Doris Davidson, of Topeka; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Paul Nellis.

A memorial has been established with the Quivera Council - Boy Scouts of America. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Norma Jean Sexton

Funeral services for Norma Jean Sexton, 67, who died at her home in Arkansas City on Jan. 18, 2006, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Hawks Funeral Home. The Reverend Bill Benefiel officiated. Interment was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Arkansas City, Kan. Vocalists were Wanda Hickey and Lavon Anderson. Pianist was Ann Looney. Casket bearers were John Bridges Jr., Timothy King, Tamo Williams, Patrick Shook, Justin Partridge and Daren Lewman.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Robert J. Billups

Robert J. Billups, 47, of Arkansas City, Kan., died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his home.
Services are pending at Hawks Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Arkansas City.

Lois R. Harris

Lois R. Harris, 63, formerly of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Lake East Hospital in Painesville, Ohio. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Monday, January 10, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Pastor Robert L. Ferris of the First Christian Church of Newkirk will officiate. Born January 16, 1941, in Arkansas City, Lois was the daughter of John Louis and Ruth Irene (Wagner) Potterton. She grew up and attended schools in Arkansas City. Ruth worked as a waitress at many different cafes and restaurants in and around Arkansas City. Lois also worked for her sister as a clerk at the R & L Laundromat for nine years before she retired. She is survived by her father, John Potterton, of Arkansas City; four sons, Raymond, and his wife, Sandy, of Redmond, Wash., John, and his wife, Marcia, of Issaquah, Wash., Larry, of Seattle, Wash., and Roy and his wife, Heather, of Madison, Ohio; daughter, Ruth Heppel-Werner, and her spouse, Reginald, of Augusta; sister, Lora Duncan, and her husband, Richard, of Arkansas City; eleven grandchildren; and one nephew, Randy Duncan. Lois was preceded in death by her mother.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association and contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Iva E. "Wanda" Branch

Iva E. "Wanda" Branch, 71, of Arkansas City, died Thursday (January 6, 2005) at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (January 11, 2005) at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Springside Cemetery. The casket will be open at the funeral home Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all day Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wanda was born June 9, 1933, in Cameron, Texas, to Earl J. and Bertie J (Shoaf) McMahan Armstrong. She was reared and educated in Cameron. Wanda graduated from nursing school in Wichita. Wanda married Donald L. Branch on September 27, 1951, in Temple, Texas. The couple has lived in Arkansas City since 1953. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Spencer-Ralston Post #1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Social Order of Beauceant, and Victory Chapter #151 Order of the Eastern Star. Wanda worked as a LPN, after raising her family, for the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital (SCKRMC) for 13 years. She enjoyed fishing and camping before bad health set in and kept her from going. She also enjoyed her many pets and local wildlife that lived on the family farm. Survivors include her husband, Don, of the home; two sons, Leonard, and his wife, Shirley Branch, Bill, and his wife, Angie Patterson, all of Arkansas City; two daughters, Linda, and her husband, Bill Cook, of Venezuela, and Donzella, and her husband, Jim Hoover, of Newkirk, Okla.; one brother, Perry G. Armstrong, of Riley, Kan.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Ronnie, and two brothers, Earl J. and Donald Ray Armstrong.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Betty Susan Holt

Betty Susan Holt, 85, Atlanta, Kan., died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at her home. She was born July 7, 1919 in rural Douglas, Kan. She was the daughter of Robert E and Katie Leah Bals. She graduated Douglas High School in 1936. She was married to Aubrey S. Holt on Sept. 16, 1936, in Winfield and made her home near Atlanta. They lived and worked on a farm for over 50 years. She was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church. Survivors include a son, Shelton Holt, and wife, Cecelia, of Enid, Okla.; daughters, Janice Billiter, and husband, Dale; Kathleen Willard, and husband, Wayne, all of Atlanta. She had 10 grandchildrn and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by an infant daughter, Wilma; and a daughter, Carolyn Enz, and her husband, Phil. Funeral services are to be held Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday. The family will greet friends from 2 until 4 p.m. that day.
Memorials have been established in Mrs. Holt's name for Atlanta First Responders and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Josephine M. Miers

Josephine M. Miers, 78, Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Via Christi/St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Born Aug. 30, 1928, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Delno and Adelaide McAlister. She was a beautician for a short time and a homemaker. Survivors include her son, Terry Dale Miers, Hammond, Ind.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial has been established in Josephine's name for the Trinity Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Goldie Marie Gates

Goldie Marie Gates, 76, Enid, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, in Enid, at the Golden Oaks Retirement Village. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at the Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel, with the Chaplain Jeff Jackson officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home. Cremation will be effected. Born Oct. 12, 1930, in Arkansas City, she was the daughter of Robert Virgil and Wilda Marie (Smalley) Webb. She worked as a switchboard operator in Arkansas City, an accountant and sold real estate. Survivors include two sons, Dayle Jerome Wilson, Enid, and Ronald Dale Gates of Talihina, Okla.; daughter, Rebecca Lynn Weathers, of Lahoma; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne Webb, of Lahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Kenneth Webb.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Carter Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Anderson-Burris Funeral Home, Enid.

Donald Adams

Funeral services for Donald Adams, 80, Winfield, who died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the First Church of the Nazarene, Winfield. The Rev. Tom Boese officiated. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery. Military graveside committal honors were by American Legion Post No. 10 in Winfield. Casket bearers were Paul Ehrhart, Brad Potucek, David Potucek, Dustin Potucek, Shawn Richardson and John Sumner. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Rowe, Gary Taylor and Joe Walker.
Arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

C.L. "Rocky" Rockhold

C.L. "Rocky" Rockhold, 82, Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Dr. C.L. Whitener of the Baptist Bible Church, Ponca City, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. Rocky was born April 14, 1924, in Douglas County, Kan., to E. Arthur and Francis J. (Tucker) Rockhold. He was reared and educated in Ottawa, Kan. On Dec. 31, 1955, he married Patricia Elam in Newkirk. The couple made their home in Ark City. Rocky worked for Reedy Ford for many years as an auto mechanic and diesel mechanic. He also spent many years as a long distance truck driver. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and his dog, Lady. Rocky was a member of the Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Patricia of the home; his two sons, Duane Rockhold, of Arizona; Drexell Rockhold and his wife, Marty, of Arizona; his two daughters, Christina Martin, and her husband, Dan, of Arkansas City; Teresa Whitener and her husband, Mark, of Ark City; one brother, Keith Rockhold and wife, Charlene, of Ottawa; one sister, Ann Suddarth and her husband, Richard, of Wellsville, Kan.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Michael.
A memorial has been established with the Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Guy Raymond Brewer

Guy Raymond Brewer, 90 Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Kansas Veterans Home, Winfield. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Norman Reeves will officiate. Interment will be held in the Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Samuel J. Stafford

Samuel J. Stafford, 86, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Bentonville Manor Nursing Home in Bentonville, Ark. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City. Interment is in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Geuda Springs. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until noon on Tuesday. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. today. Sam was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Blackwell, Okla., the son of Jefferson Columbus and Alice Gates Stafford. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Sam moved to Wichita in the 1950s and worked at Cargill for many years until his retirement. He moved to Arkansas City in 1980. On Dec. 3, 1998, Sam married Velma S. Sammis Dickson and the couple moved to Arkansas in September, 2000. He attended Trinity Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Velma, of Bentonville, Ark.; two daughters, Valeria Vann, of Katy, Texas, and Sammie Lee Hyland, of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Betty Bennett, of Valley Center, Kan.; two step-sons, Dr. Jerry L. Dickson, of Bella Vista, Ark., and Don Dickson, of Big Sandy, Texas; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Stafford.
A memorial has been established with the Trinity Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Samuel Joseph Stafford

Funeral services for Samuel Joseph Stafford, 86, who died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at the Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. James Standerfer and Pastor Tony VanSchuyver officiated. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military committal services were conducted by Spencer Ralston VFW Post No. 1254. Pianist was Linda Brinigar.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Lenora A. Henderson

Lenora A. Henderson, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, in North Riverside, Ill., at the Scottish Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at the Dexter Christian Church at the corner of Kansas and Maple in Dexter, Kan. Following interment in the Dexter Cemetery, there will be a dinner at the Dexter Masonic Lodge in her honor. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Friday, at Rindt-Erdman Mortuary, 150 E. Kansas Ave., Arkansas City. Lenora was born to Ola Bair and Anna Mae (Wilkerson) Bair on March 25, 1921, in Pasamonte, N.M. Her mother, Anna Mae Wilkerson, when she was 8 years old traveled by covered wagon in 1909 from Kansas with her father, sister, aunt and uncle to homestead in New Mexico. Anna Mae met Ola Bair there and they married. At age 5, Lenora and her parents, one brother and one sister moved to Arkansas City. She was the oldest of nine children. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1939, and from Arkansas City Junior College in 1941 with a teaching degree. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in 1942-44 in Silver Creek School District near Burden. On Dec. 3, 1944, she married William O. Henderson in Temple, Texas. Bill was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, with the Army before he was sent to serve in the Philippines and Occupied Japan in World War II. Their parents had adjoining farms in Dexter. While Bill was in WWII, she worked at Beech Aircraft in Wichita. After WWII, Lenora and Bill lived in Wichita for nearly 50 years. They had two children, Don and Connie, who are twins. Lenora and Bill were married for two months short of 50 years when Bill died in 1994. She and her husband had a strong sense of commitment to their family and were very involved in the activities of their children. She was a Camp Fire Girl leader and room mother for her children. She was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church in Wichita for 40 years. There is a family farm in Dexter, which was homesteaded in 1884. She worked for 25 years at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita in Human Resources. Her last position was benefits manager. She was selected to be the Ambassador of the Month during her tenure there. She is remembered by family and friends for being a terrific mother, having a good sense of humor, and being very generous. She took great pride in her home and she was known far and wide for her great chocolate chip cookie dough. Survivors include her son, Don Henderson and wife, Jane, of Southlake, Texas, and her daughter, Connie Henderson-Damon and husband, Chris, of Oak Park, Ill.; her grandchildren, Ayn Laherty and husband, Paul, of Long Beach, Calif., Joe Henderson and wife, Amber, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Laura Damon, of Oak Park, Ill.; her great-granddaughter, Kate Laherty of Long Beach, Calif. ; sisters, Eula Mae Martin, Dexter, Vivian Shaver, Douglass, Kan., and Wanda Mackey, Burden; a sister-in-law, Sarah Bair, Winfield; brothers, Homer Bair, Augusta, and Orville Bair, Burden, and their spouses; and 27 nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Oleta Shields and Beatrice Waymire; one brother, Eugene Bair; sister-in-law, Betty Allen; and brothers-in-law, Bill Allen, Bill Shields, and Ray Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Greater Ft. Worth-Arlington Chapter, 3840 Hulen Street Suite 601, Fort Worth, TX 76107. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Clifford "Buck" Haines

Clifford "Buck" Haines, 91, formerly of Winfield, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at the Dexter Care Center in Dexter. Family graveside services will be held in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-7 p.m. Thursday. Born June 25, 1915, in Foreacre, Okla., he was the son of Aaron McCord and Elizabeth Pearl (Gallatin) Haines. He was a farmer, worked at Boeing as a supervisor and opened "Buck and Jeans Tavern" after retirement. Survivors include his daughters, Tina Gage, Maple City and Gina Boatman, Dexter; stepsons, Kelly Alexander, of Oklahoma, and Galen Alexander, of Florida; stepdaughter, Kathie Moore, of Winfield; sisters, Louise Keck, Virgie Haines, Geneva Louia, Loraine McNairy; brothers, Frank Haines and Max Haines; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe, Charles, and Fred; and sister, Judy Waller.
Memorials have been established for Meals on Wheels in Winfield. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.
