Ruth N. Furthmyer 1914- 2002
RUSSELL - Ruth N. Furthmyer, 87, died March 14, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born Aug. 15, 1914 at Ellsworth, the daughter of Tony and Maude Hrabik. She married Orville L. Furthmyer Jan. 18, 1937 at Gorham. He died Dec. 12, 1999. A resident of Russell, coming from Ellsworth and Gorham, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Furthmyer was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Russell. Survivors include one son, Larry Furthmyer of Gorham, and one step-grandson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church in Russell, with the Rev. Charles Steirer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Gorham. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Masses in care of the mortuary. March 17, 2002

Donna Meredith Humphreys 1968-2002
MESA, ARIZ. ­ Donna Meredith 'Meredy' Humphreys, 33, died March 9, at her home in Mesa.
She was born Nov. 29, 1968 in Great Bend, the daughter of Don and Alice Humphreys.
She was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Bethany College in Lindsburg.
A resident of Mesa, coming from Great Bend, she was a chemist for TRW and a computer programmer at CRC, both of Mesa.
Survivors include her parents of Great Bend; four brothers, Douglas Humphreys of Hope, Ariz., John E. Humphreys of Schaumburg, Ill., Hutch Humphreys of Upland, Calif., and Hank Humphreys of Hesston; and one sister, Alyson Walter of Topeka.
Memorial service will be 10:30 am Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating.
A memorial service will be held in Mesa the week of March 24.

Shirley Princ 1934-2002
WILSON - Shirley Princ, 68, died March 14, at her home in Wilson. She was born Jan. 6, 1934 in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Bill and Gladys Pecival Kuck. She married Don Princ, April 10, 1953, at Wilson. He died Nov. 12, 2001. A lifelong Wilson resident, she was a homemaker and a finish worker at Eschbaugh's Advertising. Mrs. Princ was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilson. Survivors include three daughters, Trady Nail of Vinita, Okla., Terri Parks of Ellsworth, and Torey Nondorf of Wilson, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son Trent Princ, and one sister Barbara. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson. Burial will be at Wilson City Cemetery. Friends may call until service time today at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Wilson Opera House in care of the mortuary. March 17, 2002

Gertrude C. Orth Becker 1902-2002
HOISINGTON - Gertrude C. Orth Becker, 99, died March 14 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born Nov. 2, 1902 at Hutchinson, the daughter of Carl Fredrick and Anna Magnus Orth. She married Herman Albert Becker, June 15, 1924 at Cheney. He died Feb. 16, 1941. A resident of Hoisington since 1924, coming from Cheney, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Becker was a member of First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Alturian Club, Garden Club, Hoisington Women Civic Club, Heritage Club, Friendship Club, and Tree Board all of Hoisington. Survivors include two sons, Gerald Becker of Wichita, and Donald Becker of Iola; two daughters, Wadonna Ashcraft of Sarasota, Fla., and Sandra Miller of Niceville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dwayne Becker; one brother, Leonard Orth, and three sisters, Mable Brown, Hilda Robertson, and Edla Sowers. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church in Hoisington, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and from 9-11 a.m. Monday, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, and noon until service time Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Youthville, Shriner's Crippled Children Hospital or the church, all in care of the funeral home. March 17, 2002

Eric Leon Lonnon 1963-2002
WICHITA - Eric Leon Lonnon, 38, died March 9 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Nov. 2, 1963, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada, the son of Gerald and Mary Ann Steuve Lonnon. Survivors include the mother of his children, Nyla Lonnon of Hoisington; two daughters, Kara Lonnon and Amanda Lonnon, both of Hoisington; one stepson, Doug Meredith of Great Bend; two stepdaughters, Dawn Meredith of Great Bend and Randi Meredith of Rush Center; his parents of Belleville, Ill.; one sister Lynn Smith of Bellville, Ill.; and his special friend, Connie Rubio of Hoisington. He was preceded in death by one son, Brian Edward Lonnon. A graveside service was held Saturday at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Kara and Amanda Lonnon education fund at Community Bank in Great Bend. Arrangements are by Smith Family Mortuaries in Wichita. March 15, 2002

Ethel V. Stoss 1910-2002
OLMITZ - Ethel V. Stoss, 91, died March 15, at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. She was born April 12, 1910 at Alexander, the daughter of John and Augusta Langer Bartonek. She married James L. Stoss Sr., May 16, 1927 in Olmitz. He died May 6, 1971. A lifetime resident of the Olmitz and Otis area, she was a homemaker and farmer. Mrs. Stoss was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and St. Ann's Altar Society in Olmitz, a former member of EHU, the Sew and So Club, Olmitz Senior Citizens Center, and rural school board member. Survivors include one son, John D. Stoss of Marina, Calif.; one daughter, Bernice Neeland of Great Bend, one sister, Marie Jilg of Olmitz; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, James L. Stoss Jr.; one brother, Abraham Bartonek; and one sister, Caroline Crowell. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church in Olmitz, with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann's cemetery in Olmitz. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, Holy Family School in Great Bend, or Donor's Choice all in care of the funeral home. March 17, 2002

Ann Kathleen Schaffer 1946-2002
CLAFLIN - Ann Kathleen Schaffer, 55, died March 12 at St. Mary's Hospital, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She was born May 22, 1946, in Wichita, the daughter of Cyril and Abbie Bright Crossette. She married Dr. Richard "Dick" Schaffer March 30, 1990, in Lawrence. A resident of rural Claflin since 1993, coming from Lawrence, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schaffer was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Jon Winter of Lawrence; two daughters, Becky Bennett of Lawrence and Robin Schneweis of Pearl City, Hawaii; two stepsons, Mark Schaffer of Kansas City, Mo. and Greg Schaffer of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Sheldon Crossette of Overland Park and Gene Crossette of Jet, Okla.; and three grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Bloomingdale cemetery in rural Claflin. Friends may call from 5-9 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Independent Township Library in Claflin, in care of the funeral home. March 14, 2002

Louise Smith 1917-2002
HOISINGTON - Louise Smith, 84, died March 12 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born April 24, 1917, in Ness County, the daughter of W.E. and Euphemia Wray. She married Chester H. "Chet" Smith July 18, 1937, in Topeka. He died Feb. 3, 2000. A resident of Hoisington for most of her life, coming from Glendale, Calif., she was a homemaker and owner of A&W in Hoisington from 1957 to 1970. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Christian Church, past member of Eastern Star, past member of PTA and Koffee Kup bowling league, all of Hoisington. Survivors include two sons, Randy Smith of Great Bend and Ron Smith of Hoisington; one daughter, Rhonda Blazek of Hoisington; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Tillie Beltz. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Victor O. Hidde 1922-2002
HUTCHINSON - Victor O. Hidde, 79, died March 12 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born April 20, 1922, in New London, Wis., the son of Oscar William and Myrtle Learman Hidde. He married Ione Cain Nov. 10, 1943, in Coffeyville. A resident of Hutchinson since 1989, coming from Winfield, he worked as a purchaser and transporter for Permian Oil Corporation, retiring in 1988. Hidde was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Hutchinson. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jerry Hidde of Hutchinson and Rocky Hidde of Winfield; two daughters, Susan Scheck of Casper, Wyo. and Donna William of Bunker Hill; four brothers, Glen Hidde, Harold Hidde, Alfred Hidde and Mel Hidde, all of New London; three sisters, Dorothy Raper of Pawderly, Texas, Alice Jonly of Weyauwega, Wis., and Hilda Fronczak of New London; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Hidde. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Ray E. Kempel officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery in Great Bend, with military graveside rites conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to the church building fund, in care of the mortuary. March 14, 2002

The Rev. Eugene Joseph Robl 1924-2002
ELLINWOOD - The Rev. Eugene Joseph Robl, 77, died March 10 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was born June 1, 1924, in Ellinwood, the son of Michael and Anna Schlochtermeier Robl. He graduated from St. Mary Cathedral High School in Wichita and attended Holy Cross Abbey School and Junior College in Canon City, Colo., St. Louis Preparatory Seminary and Kenrick Seminary, both in St. Louis, Mo. He was ordained to the priesthood June 1, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, for the Diocese of Wichita. A resident of Las Vegas for the past year, coming from Kansas and Missouri, he was a Roman Catholic Priest, retiring in 1997. Robl was a member of Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club, Boy Scouts of America, St. Vincent de Paul Society and American Red Cross. Survivors include one sister, Magdalen Robl of Las Vegas. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Columbia, Mo., with Bishop Emeritus Michael F. McAuliffe and Monsignor Michael Flanagan officiating. Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, north of Ellinwood, with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Friends may call from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter and Paul Trust, in care of the funeral home. March 14, 2002

Ruth Thelma Hyacinth Best 1912-2002
BURRTON - Ruth Thelma Hyacinth Best, 89, died March 10 at Good Samaritan Village in Hutchinson. She was born May 20, 1912, in Newton, the daughter of Everett and Bessie Nott Sharp. She was a graduate of Bushong High School. She married James Ray Best in 1934, in Council Grove. He died Sept. 15, 1982. A longtime resident of the Burrton and Halstead area, coming from Council Grove and Dunlap, she was a homemaker and retired medical technician at Hertzler Clinic in Halstead. Mrs. Best was a member of United Methodist Church, Ruth Circle of the church and Aurora Club, all of Burrton. Survivors include two sons, Robert R. Best of Bushton and Harlan E. Best of Hutchinson; three daughters, Patty I. Biehler Harmanand Judith E. Maxfield, both of Hutchinson and Lynn L. Bayles of Cummings, Ga.; two brothers, Lowell Sharp and Leland Sharp, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Halstead Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, all at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association or the donor's choice, both in care of the mortuary. March 13, 2002
