LeRoy Russell Hester 1931-2002
LAKE OF THE PINES, Calif. - LeRoy Russell Hester, 70, died April 11 at his home in Lake of the Pines. He was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Los Angeles, Calif. He was a graduate of Coachella Valley High School and from Fort Hays State College. He married Merrilee Keeley Sept. 17, 1953. A resident of Lake of the Pines, he worked in the aerospace industry and in research and development for the videotape manufacturing industry. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Merrilee Gayle and Melanie Chase; one brother, Kirby E. Hester; and four grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Grass Valley, Calif. Burial will be at Larned cemetery in Larned. Memorials are suggested to Sutter Auburn Faith Hospice, in care of Neptune Society of Northern California in Sacramento, Calif. April 23, 2002

Irene Dreiling 1917-2002
BRISTOW, Okla. - Irene Dreiling, 85, died April 21 in Bristow. She was born March 11, 1917, the daughter of George and Appolonia Burgardt Schmidt. She married William Otto Dreiling. He preceded her in death. A resident of Depew, Okla., coming from Hays, she worked as a bookkeeper and clerk for Otasco for more than 15 years. Mrs. Dreiling was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Depew. Survivors include two sons, Neil W. Dreiling of Hays and Larry F. Dreiling of Cottage Grove, Ore.; one daughter, Judy Lynn Freeman of Depew; one brother, John Robert Schmidt of Alliance, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Schmidt. Wake service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Schumacher Funeral Home Chapel in Bristow. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Chris Daigle officiating. Burial will be at Stroud City Cemetery. There is no visitation listed. Memorials are suggested to Stroud Health Care Center Activity Fund, in care of the funeral home. April 23, 2002

Emily Alice Ruth Blair 1910-2002
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Emily Alice Ruth Blair, 91, died April 20 at Rochier Heights Nursing Center in Fayetteville. She was born Dec. 26, 1910, in Manhattan, the daughter of Warren W. and Ella Mae Barnard Scofield. She married Sherman Cyrus Blair. He died in 1967. A resident of Fayetteville, she was a homemaker and volunteered at Northwest Medical Center Thrift Shop. Mrs. Blair was a member of Robinson Avenue Church of Christ in Springdale, Ark. Survivors include two sons, Richard Blair of Springdale and David Blair of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Shirley Ohlemeier of Springdale, Bonnie Panzer of St. Louis, Mo., and Virginia Blair of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Donald W. Scofield of Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at La Crosse City cemetery in La Crosse, with the Rev. Troy Schroeder officiating. There is no visitation listed. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. April 23, 2002

David Gene Eberhart 1944-2002
David Gene Eberhart, 57, of Great Bend, died April 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 12, 1944, in Syracuse, the son of Clarence and Vida Eberhart. He married Kay Lents Jan. 10, 1976, in Oklahoma City, Okla. A resident of Great Bend for 24 years, coming from Oklahoma City, he was a driver for Logistics Express Inc. Survivors include his wife of the home; five daughters, Linda Brown of Garnett, Kim Kershner of Great Bend, Joy Eberhart of New York, N.Y., Sherry Kyle and Loreen Hughes, both of Colorado; and five grandchildren. Memorial service was held Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Cremation has taken place, inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. April 21, 2002

Richard Dean Boger 1936-2002
ELLINWOOD - Richard Dean Boger, 66, died April 19 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born Jan. 29, 1936, in Hoisington, the son of Ludwig "Louie" and Anna K. Lust Boger. He married Ilse Victoria "Vicky" Bauder April 29, 1960, in Columbus, Ga. A resident of Ellinwood since 1975, coming from Great Bend, he was a pharmacist and owner of Boger Pharmacy and Gifts in Ellinwood, before he retired in 1999. Boger attended the Lutheran church. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Debbie R. Lang of Great Bend; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association or American Lung Association, both in care of the funeral home. April 21, 2002

Louis A. Ellis 1911-2002
BURDETT - Louis A. Ellis, 91, died April 9 at Red River Healthcare in Bogata, Texas. He was born March 13, 1911, in Nekoma, the son of Elmer and Ora Watts Ellis. He was a 1929 graduate of Rozel High School. He married Nellie Marie Zahn July 15, 1933, in Burdett. She died Dec. 1, 1973. He married Lorrayne Smith Shiedman Nov. 14, 1979, at Rozel. She died in 1984. He married Vera Watson Bradford Beash Dec. 10, 1986, in Blossom, Texas. A longtime resident of Burdett and winter resident of Phoenix, Ariz., and Blossom, he was a retired farmer. Ellis was a member of United Methodist Church and past member of Lions Club, both of Burdett, and a 53-year member of Masonic Lodge 15 of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Louis Sheldon Ellis of Huntsville, Texas, and Kendall Ellis of Arvada, Colo.; one daughter, Beverly Bennett of Canyon, Texas; one brother, Raymond Ellis of LaCrosse, Wis.; one sister, Helen Gilbert of Topeka; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Guy Ellis, Leonard Ellis and Harry Ellis; three sisters, Mildred Bruntzel, Edna Routh and Dorothy Spreier; two grandsons, Jeffery Scott Ellis and Craig Michael Ellis; twin granddaughters, Domique Dawn Hedgpeth and Danille Dawn Hedgpeth; and one great-grandson, Brice Richard Hedgpeth. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be at Browns Grove cemetery in Burdett. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. April 21, 2002

Deborah Lee Feist 1952-2002
WEBB CITY, Mo. - Deborah Lee Feist, 49, died April 18 at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. She was born June 20, 1952, in Springfield, Mo., the daughter of Harold and Norma Vandegrift. She was a graduate of Cosmetology School in Springfield and of Missouri Southern State College in Joplin. She married Douglas J. Feist Feb. 18, 1999, in Miami, Okla. A resident of Webb City, she was employed at Contract Freighters Inc. in Joplin. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Shannon Ivy of Joplin; her parents of Greenfield, Mo.; one brother, Dennis Vandegrift of Independence, Mo.; one sister, Deanna Vandegrift of Greenfield; her grandmother, Zeta Friend of Greenfield; and one grandson. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hedge-Lewis Chapel in Webb City, with the Rev. Bob Feist officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Webb City. Family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral chapel. April 21, 2002

Ferrell W. Stamback 1924-2002
HOLYROOD - Ferrell W. Stamback, 78, died April 18 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Halstead, the son of Charles and Susie Kaiser Stamback. He married Phyllis Hendrickson July 16, 1949, in Conway, Ark. A resident of Holyrood for the past 24 years, coming from the Wichita area, he was owner of Stamback Construction and Welding and was a refrigeration technician for Excel Packing for 35 years. Stamback was a member of Evangelical Free Church in Ellsworth. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Becky Dirks of Topeka and Marilyn Massey of Wichita; one brother, Max Stamback of Willcox, Ariz.; three sisters, Mary Mace Kruger and Clarice Dyer, both of El Dorado, and Jame Milne of Sedgwick; and three grandchildren. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth, with the Rev. Tom Richards officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Hillside cemetery in Sedgwick. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holyrood Ambulance Service, in care of the funeral home. Sister Aquinata Penka 1910-2002
Sister Aquinata Penka, 91, of Great Bend, died April 19 at the Dominican Sisters' convent infirmary in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 10, 1910, in Redwing, the daughter of Emil and Hedwig Heger Penka. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community May 19, 1926, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 20, 1929. She celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 1999. She was a lifelong resident of Barton County. Sister Aquinata began her ministry as an elementary teacher. However, after completing her nursing education she gave the rest of her ministerial life to health care and instruction of student nurses. She was director of nurses at St. Rose Hospital and Dominican School of Nursing, both in Great Bend. She also served as a councilor of the Dominican Sisters' leadership team, and as director of the associate nursing program at the college in Garden City. After completing a life of ministry in healthcare, she cared for shrines and gardens at the Dominican Sisters' motherhouse in Great Bend. There she retired and at the time of her death was in the convent infirmary. Survivors include one brother, Julius Penka of Hoisington; and two sisters, Sister Eleanor of Great Bend and Helen Kalina of Hoisington. Sister Aquinata's body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains in Great Bend at 4 p.m. today where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday at the convent, with the Revs. Gerald Hammeke and Eugene Kenny officiating. Wake service will be at 7 tonight at the convent. Burial will be at the Sisters' Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Dominican Sisters' Retirement Fund or Sister Aquinata Penka Endowment Scholarship Fund, both in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. April 21, 2002

Edgar Milton 'Pat' Patterson 1911-2002
Edgar Milton "Pat" Patterson, 90, of Great Bend, died April 20 in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Ft. Towson, Okla., the son of George and Lizzie Fitzgerald Patterson. He married Eva Cole March 10, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. A resident of Great Bend since 1951, coming from Stilwater, Okla., he was a water well driller for Rosencrantz-Bemis before retiring in 1973 and also owned and operated, with his wife, Little Chef Diner in Great Bend in the 1960s. Patterson was a member of First Baptist Church in Hugo, Okla., and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Jill Ann Irwin of Sheldon, Wis.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother; and four sisters. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home. April 21, 2002

Thelma M. Brokar 1916-2002
KINSLEY - Thelma M. Brokar, 86, died April 19 at Edwards County Hospital and Healthcare Center in Kinsley. She was born Jan. 21, 1916, in Larned, the daughter of Henry and Essie Fox Cummings. She married Emery W. Brokar in 1982 in Kinsley. A resident of Kinsley since 1979, coming from Great Bend, she worked as a certified nurses aide at Larned State Hospital for 27 years. Mrs. Brokar was a member of Assembly of God Church in Great Bend and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Kinsley. Survivors include four sons, Larry of Walnut Springs, Texas, Vernon of Long Beach, Calif., David and Bill, both of Kinsley; two daughters, Diana Eastman of Kinsley and JoAnn Keys of Shamrock, Texas; 31 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Ora Gene; and three brothers, Gale Cummings, Harry Cummings and Chester Cummings. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Larned cemetery in Larned, with the Rev. Richard Martin officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Memorials are suggested to Kinsley Public Library Children's section, in care of the mortuary. April 21, 2002

PRATT - Destiny Paige Bettes, 23 days, died April 17 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born March 25, 2002, at Pratt Regional Medical Center in Pratt, the daughter of Mark Allen and Jessica Mae Adrignola Bettes. She was a resident of Pratt. Survivors include her parents of the home; one brother, Alexander Bettes of the home; her grandparents, Kenneth and Rebecca Bettes of Pratt, Brenda Duffy and Charles Adrignola, both of Missoula, Mont., and Eric and Jan Gould of Oklahoma; and her great-grandparents, Lela Bettes of Great Bend, Anthony and Marie Adrignola of Rawlins, Mont., and Jenith Dorland of Libby, Mont. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt, with the Rev. Scott Buller officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Ronald McDonald House Sleepy Hollow, in care of the mortuary. April 19, 2002
