Nellie Margaret McElroy 1902-2002
Nellie Margaret McElroy, 100, died Sept. 1 at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon, Okla. She was born May 27, 1902, in Osborne County, the daughter of Mike and Mary Rumsey Reiss. She attended Luray High School and Fort Hays College, receiving a teacher's permit. She married Cecil Albert Prather on May 29, 1922, at Marquette. He died Nov. 1, 1963. She then married Lloyd F. "Mac" McElroy on Oct. 10, 1969, at Wichita. He died June 20, 1983. A resident of Guymon, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. McElroy was a member of King Memorial United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Mike Prather of Guymon; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, William A. Prather; one daughter, Doris Prather Bryant; two brothers, John Reiss and Claude Reiss; and three sisters, Ora Rose, Bertha Maude Beatty and Dorothy Cullens. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Fryberger Mortuary Chapel in Great Bend with William Walton officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary. Sept. 4, 2002

Erwin L. Julian 1947-2002
MARQUETTE - Erwin L. Julian, 55, died Sept. 2. He was born March 28, 1947, at Larned. He married Glenda. A resident of Marquette, he was a maintenance employee at Riverview Estates Nursing Home and funeral director at Olson's Funeral Home, both of Marquette. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Michael E. Julian of Yates Center; two daughters, Anna Marie George of Yates Center and Nicole D. Collins of Cooperas Cove, Texas; one stepson, Kevin Baxter of Marquette; one stepdaughter, Melissa Riggs of Marquette; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Elim Lutheran Church in Marquette. Burial will be at Marquette Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-8:30 tonight at Olson's Funeral Home in Marquette. Memorials are suggested to the church or Marquette Lion's Club, both in care of the funeral home. Sept. 4, 2002

Carla M. Swigert Alderson 1954-2002
WICHITA - Carla M. Swigert Alderson, 48, died Aug. 31. She married John Alderson. She was a paralegal and cosmetologist. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Derek Alderson of the home; one daughter, Leigh Anne Schneider; two brothers, Wayne Swigert of Great Bend and Carl Swigert of Kerrville, Texas; and one sister, Nola Steinert of Clinton, Iowa. Rosary will be at 7 tonight at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wichita. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Harry Hines Memorial Hospice, in care of DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary of Wichita. Sept. 4, 2002

Bradley F. 'Kermit' Schaan 1964-2002
WILSON - Bradley F. "Kermit" Schaan, 38, died Aug. 31. He was born July 3, 1964, at Turtle Lake, N.D., the son of Francis and Ramona Schaan. He married Cynthia. A resident of Wilson, he was a gas maintenance foreman for Midwest Energy Inc. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Bradley Schaan Jr. of Wilson; two daughters, Lori Schaan of North Carolina and Tiffany Schaan of Wilson; his parents of Minot, N.D.; and two sisters, Brenda Weber of Minot and Bernadean Howell of Makoti, N.D. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial cemetery in Minot. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Foster Mortuary in Wilson. Memorials are suggested to Bradley Schaan Memorial Fund, for the children's benefit, in care of the mortuary. Sept. 4, 2002

Evelyn Marie Karlin 1915-2002
Evelyn Marie Karlin, 87, of Great Bend, died Sept. 2 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born June 24, 1915, at Victoria, the daughter of Joseph A. and Anna Lang Rupp. She married Henry W. Karlin on June 24, 1935, at Hays. He died May 25, 1978. A resident of Great Bend since 1947, coming from Hays, she was a retired greeter at Wal-Mart, and worked as a cook for Knights of Columbus and USD 428. Mrs. Karlin was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and AARP, all of Great Bend Survivors include one son, Ronald J. Karlin of Great Bend; two daughters, Lucille Davis and June Hillman, both of Great Bend; two sisters, Rozella Augustine and Regina Moore, both of Hays; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Linke; two brothers, Ralph Rupp and Earl Rupp; one sister, Mary Ann Neely; and one great-grandson, Aaron Sisson. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil service will be at 7:30 tonight, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary, all at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs. Charles Mazouch and Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Sept. 4, 2002

Jessica Lee Kowalke 1987-2002
DODGE CITY - Jessica Lee Kowalke, 14, died Aug. 30 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born Dec. 21, 1987, at Garden City, the daughter of Kenneth and Lyn Snyder Kowalke. A resident of Dodge City, she was a former student of the Ingalls school system. Kowalke was a member of United Methodist Church and United Methodist Youth Group, both of Kalvesta, Gray County 4-H, Sandhill Vacqueros Saddle Club and Beef Empire Day Cutting Horse Association of Garden City. Survivors include her father of Ingalls; her mother of Dodge City; one sister, Josey Kowalke of Dodge City; one half brother, Jace Stubbes of Garden City; one half sister, Jill Stubbes of Iowa; her grandparents, Raymond and Patricia Snyder of Dodge City, and Raymond and Evelyn Kowalke of Garden City; and her great-grandmother, Juanita Smith of Texas. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at United Methodist Church in Cimarron with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael cemetery in southwest Hodgeman County. Memorials are suggested to Gray County 4-H Foundation or Sandhill Vacqueros Saddle Club of Garden City, both in care of Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Sept. 2, 2002

Nellie M. Prather McElroy 1902-2002
GUYMAN, Okla. - Nellie M. Prather McElroy, 100, formerly of Great Bend, died Sept. 1. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday, all at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Survivors will be announced by the funeral home. Sept. 2, 2002

Sarah Esther Hathaway 1916-2002
ST. JOHN - Sarah Esther Hathaway, 86, died Aug. 31 at Leisure Homestead in St. John. She was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Stafford County, the daughter of Charles Arthur and Edna Grace Griffin. She married Willie R. Hathaway on Aug. 5, 1933, at Larned. He died Nov. 21, 1996. A resident of St. John, she was an Avon representative for 15 years, a nurses' aide at Hearthstone Nursing Home and a homemaker. Mrs. Hathaway was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Great Bend, former member of Missionary Baptist Church, ladies church auxiliary and Sunday school teacher, all of St. John. She was also a member of Avon Presidents Club. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Hathaway of St. John and Jim Hathaway of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six daughters, Marilyn Appelhans of Valley Center, Joyce Abshire of Boyce, La., Marlene White of Great Bend, Joan Pruett, Judy Shelton and Linda Sizemore, all of St. John; one sister, Georgia Bremer of Fort Bragg, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; many stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Grace Lower; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the Rev. Chet Johnson and A. J. Owens officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice, in care of the chapel. Sept. 2, 2002

Loretta Rae Debes 1955-2002
Loretta Rae Debes, 47, of Great Bend, died Aug. 31 at Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. She was born April 24, 1955, at Wichita, the daughter of Jim and Pat Moyer Gautier. She was a 1973 graduate of Lyons High School. A resident of Wichita for one year, coming from Great Bend, she was a former employee of Kansas Power and Light Co. Survivors include two daughters, Charisse Sander of Great Bend and Stacia Battershell of Wichita; her parents of Lyons; two brothers, Troy Gautier of Atlanta, Ga., and Trent Gautier of Shawnee; one sister, Leah Gautier-Neff of Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Lyons with the Rev. Cindy Watson officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until noon Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons and from noon until service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning of Wichita, in care of the funeral home. Sept. 2, 2002

Mildred J. Teichman 1912-2002
STAFFORD - Mildred J. Teichman, 90, died Aug. 30 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She was born Feb. 15, 1912, at Stafford, the daughter of Edward and Lodie Moore Russell. She was a 1932 graduate of Stafford High School. She married Irvin O. Teichman, Dec. 31, 1932 at Stafford. He died April 27, 2002. A resident of Stafford and Hudson communities, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Teichman was a member of United Methodist Church, Northstart Community Club, both of Stafford, and Homemakers EHU of Hudson. Survivors include one son, Dennis Teichman of Stafford; one daughter, Cibyl Ronen of St. John; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy Russell, Homer Russell, Myron Russell, and Elmer Russell; and five sisters, Florence Russell, Esther Russell, Laura Ritts, Edna Hockman, and Orpha Rhodes. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the chapel. Sept. 1, 2002

June M. Nylin 1938-2002
MAPLE GROVE, MINN. - June Marie Nylin, 64, died Aug. 21 at North Memorial Hospital at Maple Grove. She was born June 20, 1938 at Great Bend, the daughter of Milton and Marcella Weide. She was a 1956 graduate of Great Bend High School. She married Harvey Nylin, Dec. 21, 1958 at California. A resident of Minnesota for 40 years, she was a secretary for Finger Hut for many years before her retirement in 2001. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Greg Nylin, Matt Nylin, and Brad Nylin; two daughters, Pam Ganser, and Audra Gutzwiller; her parents of Great Bend; three brothers, John Weide and Joe Weide both of Topeka, and Jay Weide of St. Louis Park, Minn.; one sister, Jan Funnell of Frisco, Texas; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Weide. Memorial service was held Aug. 24 at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel. Memorials are suggested to North Memorial Medical Center Hospice in care of Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel. Sept. 1, 2002

Betty J. Reeves 1924-2002
NEWTON - Betty J. Reeves, 77, died Aug. 28, at Newton Medical Center at Newton. She was born Dec. 2, 1924 at Great Bend, the daughter of George W. and Alma M. Fesser Bell. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School. She married Licurgous 'L.F.' Franklin Reeves. He preceded her in death. A resident of Newton, coming from Salina and Hutchinson, she was a florist, and the Social Editor for the Newton Kansan from 1968 until her retirement in 1986. Mrs. Reeves was a member of First Christian Church in Newton, Eagles Auxiliary, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Business Professional Women, Soroptimist Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include one brother, Wilbur Dean Bell of Great Bend; and one sister, Patricia June Shadix of Shawnee, Okla. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Great Bend City Cemetery, with the Rev. Leigh Early officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. Sept. 1, 2002

Dale L. 'John' Gustafson 1955-2002
WILSON - Dale L. "John" Gustafson, 46, died Sept. 28 at his residence in Wilson. He was born Sept. 29, 1955, at Canyonville, Ore., the son of Dale W. and Wanda J. Cooper Gustafson. He married Diana Patrick in 1974, at Salina. A resident of Wilson since 1977, coming from Elsinore, Calif., he was owner and operator of Wilson Marine Specialty in Wilson. Gustafson was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church in La Crosse. Survivors include one son, Shannon Gustafson of Wilson; two daughters, Shawna Morosco of Salina and Tara Kubick of Ozawkie; his father of Wilson; his mother of Salina; four sisters, Deborah Webster and Kathryn Robison, both of Salina, Linda Ridder of Augusta and Dianna Brunsell of Tescott; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson with the Rev. Jim Wagner officiating. Burial will be at Franklin cemetery in Tescott. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the mortuary. Oct. 1, 2002
