Edna-Mae Boock 1921-2002
STERLING — Edna-Mae Boock, 81, died Dec. 20 at Hutchinson Hospital of Hutchinson. She was born Oct. 31, 1921 at Independence, Mo., the daughter of Harry and Ethel Johnston Harris. She married David L. Boock on Oct. 31, 1949 in Hutchinson. He died Nov. 29, 1986. A longtime Sterling resident, she was a retired Avon team leader. Mrs. Boock was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Helping Hands at United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Independent Order of Oddfellows Rebekah’s Lodge 172, all of Sterling, and Silver City Sam’s Chapter of the Sam’s Travel Club. Survivors include two sons, Harold Tissue of Hutchinson and William Tissue of Sterling; two daughters, Judith Dirks of Hutchinson and Dava Walker of St. John; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Sterling Community cemetery with Dr. Lee R. Louderback officiating. Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home of Sterling. Memorials are suggested to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Stafford Education Foundation, both in care of the funeral home. Dec. 22, 2002

George A. Heier 1916-2002
PARK — George A. Heier, 86, died Dec. 19 at Gove County Medical Center of Quinter. He was born Jan. 6, 1916, at Park, the son of John and Mary Heisler Heier. He married Cecilia Zerr on May 7, 1940, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Park. She died June 11, 1985. A resident of Park, he was a farmer and stockman. Heier was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include three sons, Delbert Heier and Jim Heier, both of Park, and Ed Heier of Great Bend; one daughter, Veronica Hemmert of Garden City; one brother, Ted Heier of Park; three sisters, Clara Uhrich of Quinter, Ida Schwarzenberger of Collyer and Margaret Zerr of Hoxie; 13 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Tony Heier, Nick Heier and Fidel Heier. Funeral service was held Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Mark Berland officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery of Quinter. Memorials are suggested to Masses or the church cemetery fund, both in care of the funeral home. Dec. 22, 2002

Bette Cobb Murphy
DALLAS, Texas — Bette Cobb Murphy, 74, died Nov. 5. Survivors include six sons, John Murphy of Highland Village, Texas, Robert Murphy of Farmers Branch, Texas, Michael Murphy of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Gerrell Murphy of Richardson, Texas, Terrell Murphy of Alvin, Texas, and Steve Murphy of Rowlett, Texas; four daughters, Gena Mann of Hitchcock, Texas, Patricia Tinsley and Martha May, both of Houston, Texas, and Mary Krieger of Mabank, Texas; 36 grandchildren; and 39 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in memory of Bette C. Murphy of the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006 or at www.lungusa.com. Dec. 22, 2002

Josephine M. Leiker 1912-2002
HAYS — Josephine M. Leiker, 90, died Dec. 19 at the Hays Medical Center of Hays. She was born Nov. 18, 1912 at Schoenchen, the daughter of Joseph and Clementine Dreher Hertel. She married Edward A. Leiker on May 30, 1933 at Hays. He died September 1962. A resident of Hays, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Leiker was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include four sons, Duane Leiker of Liberal, Donald L. Leiker of Hays, Allen Leiker of Russell, and Norman Leiker of Craig, Colo.; two daughters, Velma J. Allinger of Great Bend and Mary Ann Pfannenstiel of Clearwater; two half brothers; three half sisters, and numerous step brothers and step sisters; 18 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Virgil Leiker; two half brothers; two sisters; and one grandson. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Kevin Weber officiating. Burial will be at the St. Joseph cemetery in Hays. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today and from 9-9:45 a.m. Monday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in her name and memory in care of the funeral home. Dec. 22, 2002

Doris Irene Miller 1916-2002
Doris Irene Miller, 86, of Great Bend, died Dec. 19 at Hospice of St. John of Lakewood, Colo. She was born Aug. 11, 1916 in Great Bend, the daughter of Frank and Cora Wardlaw Asher. She married Sidney D. Miller on Nov 30, 1936 at Granite City, Ill. He died Jan. 18, 2000. A resident of Great Bend for most of her life, with the exception of 10 years in Granite City, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Miller was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Great Bend, Episcopal Church Women, Fort Zarah Unit, and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and many other community activities. Survivors include one son, Louis Kim Miller of Evergreen, Colo.; one daughter, Cheryl Peterson of Brighton, Colo.; two brothers, Carlos “Bud” Asher of Troy, Ohio, and Loyd Asher of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Ruby Phillips of Great Bend, and Esther Moeller of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert A. “Tony” Miller, and three sisters, Mildred Tournear, Ellen Doonan and Marie Asher. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Kevin Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church or Great Bend Public Library Talking Books, both in care of the funeral home. Dec. 22, 2002

Manuela Renteria 1943-2002
Maneula Renteria, 59, of Great Bend, died Dec. 20 at her residence. She was born July 14, 1943 in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Miguel and Candelaria Levario Renteria. A resident of Great Bend for five years, coming from Mexico, she was a homemaker. Renteria was a member of Iglesia Bautista Espanol. Survivors include four sons, Miguel Angel Arnendariz, Francisco Javier Rocha, Adrian Renteria, and Baltazar Portillo, all of Great Bend; three daughters, Elvira Alicia Portillo and Carmina Portillo, both of Great Bend, and Cruz Lorena Arnendariz of Mexico; two sisters, Irma Renteria of Great Bend, and Paula Renteria of Mexico; and 21 grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend, with the Rev. Arturo Ferrell officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park of Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home. Dec. 22, 2002

Irvin D. Hubin 1911-2002
JETMORE — Irvin D. Hubin, 91, died Dec. 18 at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center in Jetmore. He was born Oct. 25, 1911 in Hodgeman County, the son of Jacob J. and Katie Ewy Hubin. A lifetime area resident, he worked in the ASCS office for 30 years and was a farmer. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Jetmore. Survivors include one brother, Raymond Hubin of Jetmore; and two sisters, Olga Glasgow of Chanute and Anna Bristow of Jetmore. He was preceded in death by one brother, Quinton Hubin and three sisters, Ada Wasko, Esther Rehmert and Alvena Eichman. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Burial will be at Mennonite cemetery in Hanston. Memorials are suggested to Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center in Jetmore in care of the funeral home. Dec. 20, 2002

Everette W. Volpert 1920-2002
WAMEGO — Everette W. Volpert, 82, died Dec. 18 at Wamego City Hospital. He was born May 24, 1920, at Swanwick, Ill., the son of Charles John and Wilhelmina Susanna Echterhoff Volpert. He married Dorothy Zartman-Young on April 23, 1946, at Rochester, Ind. She died July 23, 1949. He married Mariam Dickerhoff in June of 1950. They divorced. He then married Mary Reed-Shaner on Aug. 6, 1973, at Junction City. A resident of the Wamego area for more than 50 years, coming from Illinois and Indiana, he was a carpenter and foreman for Baril Construction and owner and manager of Slim’s Downtown Cafe, both of Manhattan. Volpert was a member of Carpenter’s Union Local 918, Eagles Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served during World War II in the South Pacific. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Greg Volpert and Jeff Volpert, both of Topeka, and Stephen Volpert of Great Bend; four daughters, Nancy Volpert of Kent, Wash., Teresa Dimond of Chanute, Jeanette Hodges of St. George and Deborah Wisehart of Manhattan; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanne Ellen in 1949, four brothers and five sisters. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at RJ Evans Mortuary of Wamego, with military honors. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association or donor’s choice, both in care of the mortuary. Dec. 20, 2002

Leland L. Mantel 1928-2002
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Leland L. Mantel, 74, died Dec. 10 at Denver, Colo. He was born Sept. 22, 1928, at Great Bend, the son of Ludwig Louis and Anna Bayer Mantel. He was a 1946 graduate of Ellinwood High School, a 1951 graduate of the University of Southern California with a bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering and attended the University of Denver graduate school on a football scholarship. He married Charline Faden on March 31, 1961. A resident of Englewood, coming from Ellinwood and Denver, he was a retired sales engineer for Allis-Chalmers Electric Power Plant Equipment, Denver Equipment Division of Joy Manufacturing Company, rubber-lined slurry pumps sales engineer and marketing manager of Denver and received a Colorado real estate license in 1981. Mantel was a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the Chief Continental Army Command Test Board. He was involved with the testing of the “Nike” surface to air missile testing at the White Sands Testing Range in New Mexico. Survivors include his wife of the home; and one daughter, Kathleen Knoblock of Denver. Memorial service was held on Dec. 14 at Littleton, Colo. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery of Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to Ellinwood School and Library Foundation, in care of Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Dec. 20, 2002

Charles H. Ashley 1931-2002
STAFFORD — Charles H. Ashley, 71, died Dec. 15 at his residence. He was born May 4, 1931, at Decatur, Neb., the son of Harrod and Virginia Young Ashley. He married Lorena. She preceded him in death. A resident of Stafford since 1971, he was an operator at the light plant for the city of Stafford and worked for Stafford County. Ashley was a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Stafford and St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, former Boy Scout Master and Little League baseball coach and past Stafford EMT. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during the Korean War. Survivors include two sons, Charles “Butch” Ashley of Pratt and Rick Ashley of Halstead; three daughters, Debi Cox of Oxford, and Karen M. Ashley and Ginger Hawkins, both of Wichita; one brother, Lynn Ashley of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Stafford cemetery with Carl Feril officiating. Memorials are suggested to Stafford EMT, in care of Minnis Chapel of Stafford. Dec. 20, 2002

Benjamin ‘Don’ Cain 1921-2002
Benjamin “Don” Cain, 81, of Great Bend, died Dec. 18 at Great Bend. He was born Jan. 21, 1921, at Jacksonburg, W.Va., the son of Arch and Alma Ash Cain. He married Stephanie C. Schenk on Nov. 3, 1942, at Great Bend. A longtime resident of Great Bend, he was a contract pumper. Cain was a member of American Legion Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jim Cain of Great Bend; one daughter, Karen Perry-Hayes of Great Bend; two sisters, Ione Hidde of Hutchinson and Ida Lou Funk of Winfield; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church of Olmitz with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann’s cemetery of Olmitz with full military honors. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Pheasants Forever-Youth Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 20, 2002

Richard B. Thorpe 1930-2002
LARNED — Richard B. Thorpe, 72, died Dec. 17 at Pratt Regional Medical Center of Pratt. He was born May 14, 1930, at Kingman, the son of Ernal and Florence Thorpe. A resident of Larned, he was a special Olympian. Survivors include two brothers, Vincle Thorpe and Ernal Thorpe Jr. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Farmington cemetery of Macksville with the Rev. Larry Popovich officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 tonight at Minnis Chapel of Macksville. Memorials are suggested to Macksville EMS, in care of the chapel. Dec. 19, 2002

Grace M. Bestwick 1922-2002
SALINA — Grace M. Bestwick, 80, died Dec. 18. She was born Nov. 6, 1922, at Medford, Okla. She married Richard Lee Walton. He preceded her in death. She married R. C. Kinney. He preceded her in death. She then married Floyd Bestwick. He preceded her in death. She was a resident of Salina. She was a bartender at Great Bend Country Club until her retirement in 1977. Survivors include one son, Marvin Walton of Salina; one stepson, Ric Braun of San Antonio, Texas; one stepdaughter, Joan Keene; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Laverne; and one daughter, Patricia Walton. Funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel of Salina. Burial will be at Medford. Friends may call until 5:30 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or Smoky Hill Rehab, both in care of the chapel. Dec. 19, 2002
