Ora Mae Meckfessel 1913-2002
GARFIELD — Ora Mae Meckfessel, 89, died Dec. 1 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Long Term Care of Larned. She was born Oct. 7, 1913, in Pawnee County, the daughter of S.O. and Margaret Hudson Boyd. She married Earl Melvin Meckfessel on Nov. 17, 1935, at Garfield. He died Oct. 30, 1984. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, she was a farm wife. Mrs. Meckfessel was a member of United Methodist Church, the Over 50 Club and WSCS, all of Garfield, the Golden Rule Quilting Club of Rozel and various farming organizations. Survivors include three daughters, Earlene Arnold of Great Bend, Elaine Appel of Larned and Kathryn Pavlik of Verdigre, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Boyd, Ralph Boyd and Harold Boyd; and two sisters, Louise Vratil and Venita Bartlett. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel of Larned with the Rev. Ken Walker officiating. Burial will be at Garfield Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church or Golden Belt Hospice, both in care of the mortuary. Dec. 2, 2002

Chrissie Roe Evans 1908-2002
Chrissie Roe Evans, 93 of Great Bend, was born Dec. 25, 1908, and passed away on Nov. 25, 2002. She was born at Stafford, the daughter of Lillian Trussell Roe and Horace L. Roe. Chrissie graduated from Sterling College and followed a career of social work director in St. John. Chrissie married Dick B. Evans, Superintendent of Schools at Hudson on July 23, 1942. They moved to Great Bend in 1944 and together created The Evans Accounting Service and raised three daughters — Nancy E. King and Margaret Smith of Denver, Colo. and Nedra Sylvis of Manhattan. When Nancy went to college, Chrissie went to work as a Home Economics teacher at Roosevelt Jr. High. She was also a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women’s Group, Portia Club, AAUW, numerous bridge clubs and a life member of Eastern Star. She was famous for her homemade bread and cream puffs. Before Dick’s passing in 1985, Chrissie and Dick traveled the world and enjoyed challenging each other on who was the best stock investor. In 1994, Chrissie moved to The Heritage Club, a retirement community in Denver. She was a member of their hospitality committee and created “The Friendship Table” and “The Nineties Club.” She was known for her open friendship to all and her great jokes. It was a wonderful seven-and-a-half years. Due to failing health, Chrissie moved in with her daughter Nancy the last 18 months of her life. Chrissie loved the Lord and was excited to be going to heaven. She is also survived by two son-in-laws, Eddie King and Vernon Smith, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Services will be Thursday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Great Bend. Interment will follow the service and will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, The Denver Teachers Club, 990 Glencoe, Denver, 80229, and in honor of Chrissie, please invite a new friend to Christmas dinner. Charter Funerals of Great Bend is in charge of arrangements. Dec. 2, 2002

Willa M. Zimmerman 1907 - 2002
TYLER, TEXAS — Willa M. Zimmerman, 95, died Nov. 28 in Tyler, Texas. She was born April 2, 1907 in Quitman, Ark. She married J.B. “Dude” Zimmerman on Jan. 4, 1932. He died Sept. 3, 1985. A resident of Tyler since January of 1994, coming from Kansas, she was a homemaker, championship golfer, and master bridge player. Survivors include one daughter, Della Antkowiak of Hide-a-way Lake, Lindale, Texas; one sister, Barbara Williams of Searcy, Ark.; and three grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Cuadle-Rutledge Funeral Home in Lindale, with Dr. James Ballard officiating. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Lindale or donors choice in care of the funeral home. Dec. 1, 2002

Toby Micheal Sneddeker 1980 - 2002
JETMORE — Toby Micheal Sneddeker, 22, died Nov. 27 in Wichita due to an automobile accident. He was born Nov. 13, 1980 in Dodge City, the son of Mike and Jane Leasure Sneddeker. Sneddeker was a member of the Christian faith and was a junior at Fort Hays State University in Hays, where he participated on the track team. Survivors include his father, Mike Sneddeker of Jetmore; two brothers, Ryan Sneddeker of Hutchinson and Clint Sneddeker of Phoeniz, Ariz.; and his grandmother, Charlene Sneddeker of Dodge City. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jane Sneddeker; maternal grandparents Harold E. and Wanda Leasure; and paternal grandfather, Jerald Sneddeker. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church in Jetmore, with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be in the Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to the Sneddeker Family Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home. Dec. 1, 2002

Francis A. Daley 1907 - 2002
ARCADIA, CALIF. — Francis A. Daley, 94, died Nov. 26 at Methodist Hospital of Southern California in Arcadia. He was born Dec. 15, 1907 in Peotone, Ill., the son of John Richard and Elizabeth VanDeventer Daley. A former Great Bend resident, he worked as a dispatch expediter for the U.S. Postal Service. Daley was a member of the Christian faith and an Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. There are no survivors. He was preceded in death by one brother, John H. Daley, and one sister, Ruth E. Daley. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Great Bend Cemetery, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. There is no visitation listed. Memorials are suggested to the Seeing Eye of Morristown, N.J. in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Dec. 1, 2002

Maria Cardona 1928 - 2002
Maria Cardona, 74, of Great Bend, died Nov. 27 at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita. She was born May 15, 1928 in Logos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico, the daughter of Amado Villalobos and Maria de los Angeles Torres Moreno. She married Cutarino Cardona. He preceded her in death. She was a resident of Great Bend for two months, coming from Roswell, N.M., she was a homemaker. Survivors include two brothers, Jose Merced Villalobos of Great Bend and Julian Villalobos of Mexico, and one sister, Paula Villalobos of Mexico. Friends may call today from 1-5 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be in the Ejidal cemetery in Zarquenos, Duarango, Mexico. Dec. 1, 2002

Oran Berkley “Tuffy” Booth 1913 - 2002
LA CROSSE — Oran Berkley “Tuffy” Booth, 89, died Nov. 28 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. He was born Oct. 5, 1913 on a farm near Grenola, the son of Albert and Dortea Peterson Booth. He attended Windsor Township rural schools and was a 1930 graduate of Cambridge High School. He married Flora J. Hankins on Aug. 6, 1933 in Medicine Lodge. She died April 8, 2001. A resident of Cambridge for many years, he was a retired farmer, oil field worker, and road supervisor for Windsor Township, retiring in 1976. Survivors include three sons, Arthur Booth of Eustace, Texas, Richard Booth of Clearwater, and James “Jim” Booth of New Strawn; one daughter, Arlene Thompson of Otis; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ward Booth and Ray Booth; one sister, Jessie Callison; and one granddaughter. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in the Cambridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to a memorial established in Booth’s name for the Cambridge Senior Citizens Center and the Cambridge Presbyterian Church, in care of the funeral home. Dec. 1, 2002

Jane E. “Fred” Sneddeker 1958 - 2002
JETMORE — Jane E. “Fred” Sneddeker, 44, died Nov. 27 south of Liberal due to an automobile accident. She was born Jan. 17, 1958 in Dodge City, the daughter of Harold E. and Wanda Snyder Leasure. She married Mike Sneddeker on Oct. 6, 1976 in Dodge City. A Jetmore resident, she was a Lab Technician and an EMT. Mrs. Sneddeker was a member of the Christian faith and Theta Pi Sorority, both of Jetmore. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Ryan Sneddeker of Hutchinson and Clint Sneddeker of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Doral E. Leasure of Amarillo, Texas; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Toby Sneddeker, and one brother, Wayne Leasure. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church in Jetmore, with the Rev. Nellie Schwindt 1912 - 2002
LA CROSSE — Nellie Schwindt, 90, died Nov. 28 at the Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Nov. 3, 1912 in Ramah, Colo., the daughter of William Abraham and Jessie Mills Collins. She was a 1934 graduate of La Crosse High School and attended Fort Hays. She married Herman Schwindt on May 7, 1939 near Nekoma. He died April 16, 2000. A resident of La Crosse, she was a teacher for one-room schools in Rush County for five years and farmed with her husband in Rush County, establishing Schwindt Farms, Inc. Mrs. Schwindt was a member of the La Crosse Evangelical United Brethren Church, taught Sunday School and youth leadership activities, and served as a 4-H leader in Rush County. Survivors include one son, Gail Schwindt of Timken; three daughters, Patricia Schwindt of San Antonio, Texas, Diane Hays of Roseville, Calif., and Pam Pierce of Albany, Ga.; two sisters, Dimple Todhunter of Pueblo, Colo. and Hazel Dunlap of Nampa, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Sara Jane Chesney, and three brothers, Ray Collins, Ulysses Collins, and Charles Collins. Funeral service was Saturday at the church. Burial was in the La Crosse City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church for youth summer camp scholarships, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays. Dec. 1, 2002

Vivian Ruth Powers 1922 - 2002
OTTAWA — Vivian Ruth Powers, 80, died Nov. 28 at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. She was born March 12, 1922 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Lloyd Vivian and Gladys Rush Keeling Carter. She attended school in the Taperville-Shell City, Mo. area and was a graduate of Shell City High School. She married William T. “Bill” Powers on Jan. 17, 1942 in Neosho, Mo. He died Jan. 24, 1995. A resident of Ottawa, coming from Great Bend, she owned and operated the Tastee-Freeze Restaurant and served as personnel manager of the K-Mart Store, both of Great Bend, until retiring in 1987. Mrs. Powers was a member of the First Church of the Nazerene of Great Bend. Survivors include four sons, James R. Powers of Lenexa, Donald R. Powers of Kansas City, and Richard A. Powers and William K. Powers, both of Ottawa; one daughter, Kimberly R. Rocha of Great Bend; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles T. Powers. Mrs. Powers was cremated and no services are planned at this time. A private burial will be held at a later date. Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa is in charge of arrangements. Dec. 1, 2002
