Ralph E. Stum 1915-2003
NESS CITY — Ralph E. Stum, 87, died Feb. 14 at Hodgeman County Healthcare Center in Jetmore. He was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Russell County, the son of Elmer Henry and Carrie Cordelia Emenhiser Stum. He married Lorraine Hollenbeck June 10, 1939, at Dodge City. A resident of Ness City for 75 years, he was a farmer and stockman. Stum was a member of United Methodist Church, Ness County Historical Society and Rotary Club, all of Ness City. He was a former Ness County Noxious Weed Director for 44 years and a member of the Kansas Livestock Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Linda Yvonne Stull of Blaine, Wash., Bette Denise Knight of Lakewood, Colo., and Marlene Sue Stum of Shoreview, Minn.; one sister, Opal Dupps of Pueblo, Colo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Ralph Stum. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Sue Talbot officiating. Burial will be at Ness City Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, all at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, and until service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Ness County Historical Society in care of the funeral home. Feb.17, 2003

Robert ‘Bob’ E. McNemee 1951-2003
DODGE CITY — Robert “Bob” E. McNemee, 51, died Feb. 12 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was born July 4, 1951, at Hays, the son of Ralph and Marian Tuzicka McNemee. A longtime resident of Dodge City, coming from Pratt, he was a former employee of National Beef of Dodge City. McNemee was a member of A.B.A.T.E. District Seven of Dodge City. Survivors include his mother and step-father, Marian and Eilt Miller of Albert; one brother, Mark McNemee of McLouth; and two sisters, Carol Olson of Olivia, Minn., and Karen Lambert of Gillette, Wyo. Memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register until 5 today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 14, 2003

Nicholas Allen Pound 1981-2003
ST. JOHN — Nicholas Allen Pound, 21, died Feb.10 at his home in Emporia. He was born Oct. 2, 1981, at Great Bend, the son of Donnie L. and Donna R. Kindhart Pound. A lifetime resident of St. John, he was a 2000 graduate of St. John High School and a student at Emporia State University. Pound was a member of First United Methodist Church of St. John. Survivors include his parents of St. John; one brother, Jake Pound of Emporia; grandfather and grandmother, Ralph and Elsie Pound of St. John; grandfather and step-grandmother, Leo G. and Wanda Kindhart of Hutchinson; and grandmother, Shirley R. Kindhart of Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1 to 8 tonight at Minnis Chapel Inc. in St. John. Memorials are suggested to Colton Bieker Education Fund in care of the funeral home. Feb. 14, 2003

Fred H. Schultis 1906-2003
LOVELAND, Colo. — Fred H. Schultis, 96, passed away Feb. 11 at Mediplex Specialty Hospital in Thornton, Colo. He had resided in Good Samaritan Center in Loveland for five years. He was born to George J. and May Schultis on Dec. 22, 1906, at Hildreth, Neb. Fred had polio when he was 3 years old in 1909. In 1913, the family moved by covered wagon from Hildreth to Sylvan Grove. A graduate from Sylvan Grove High School in 1926, he was awarded a Union Pacific 4-H Scholarship in 1926 to attend Kansas State University. Fred graduated with honors with a B.S. degree in agricultural administration from K-State in 1930. While in college, he was a member of the Kansas State Dairy judging team, the junior livestock judging team and the senior livestock judging team. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa and Alpha Zeta National Honor Scholarship fraternities. Fred married Ruby Ann Ensign July 12, 1931, at Sylvan Grove. They resided at Alton where Fred taught vocational agriculture for five years. In 1935, they moved to Inman where Fred started a new vocational agricultural department and Future Farmer chapter. In 1939, they moved to Great Bend where Fred started another vocational agricultural department and Future Farmers of America chapter. All in all Fred taught vocational agriculture for 32 years; five at Alton; four at Inman and 23 at Great Bend. While teaching, Fred was president of the Kansas Vocational Teachers Association in 1945-1947, and for a second time in 1965-1966. In 1971, he was recognized as the Master Vocational Teacher in Kansas. He also served as president of the Great Bend Education Association for two different times; once in the early ’40s and again in the ’60s. He also served as president of the Barton County 4-H board for five years. Fred and family lived on a farm west of Great Bend for 15 years and had a herd of registered Angus cattle. He served as president of the Kansas Angus Association in 1952, then as treasurer for 22 years. He was exalted ruler of Great Bend Elks Lodge 1127 for three years, chairman of the house committee for two years and secretary for two years before moving to Loveland, Colo., July 1, 1972. Fred served as secretary of Loveland Elks Lodge 1051 for nine years before retiring. He served as chairman of many committees, and was chosen Elk of the Year for Loveland Lodge 1051. Following this he was chosen Elk of the Year for Colorado North District in 1986. He served on the Bingo committee for 15 years. He was editor of the Elks Lodge Bulletin for six years. He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Loveland. Fred served on the trustee board two different times and was chairman for one year. Fred is survived by one son, Estel J. Schultis and wife Patsy of Loveland; and one daughter, Ann M. Mauck and husband Jim of Longmont, Colo. Grandchildren include, Tammy Friske and husband Mat of Loveland, Bryan Schultis and wife Dawn of Wichita, Michael Scott Wade and wife Angela of Idaho Falls, Ind., Jeffry E. Wade and wife Nancy of Las Vegas, Nev., Michelle Cross of Silverthorne, Wendy L. Brackeen and husband Steve of Great Bend, Kendall D. Hoskins and wife Jennifer of Great Bend, Dawn Marie Hoskins of Great Bend; stepgrandchildren, James D. Mauck of Beaver Creek, Karrie Clark and husband Bob of Loveland; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, three brothers, Emanuel, Bill, and George Schultis; one sister, Kathryn Wolf; one daughter, Norma Jean Schultis and his wife Ruby Ann Ensign Schultis who passed away Aug. 3, 1995. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Loveland Good Samaritan Village Chapel. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Great Bend Cemetery. Kristin Kathleen Potter 1986-2003
Kristin Kathleen Potter, 16 of Great Bend, was called home to be with the Lord on Feb. 12. She was born Oct. 7, 1986, in Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Abraitis Potter. Kristin had a long-time battle with Rett Syndrome and was recently diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. She was a sophomore at Great Bend High School and a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church. She enjoyed the love of her parents, family and many friends. She also enjoyed school, her videos, Lamb Chop and McDonalds. Kristin will be dearly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Potter, two brothers, Jeffrey Potter and Jay Potter, all of Great Bend; four sisters, Michelle Brodie of Mason, Ohio, Angela Meitner of Wichita, Kimberly Johnson of Lawrence and Kelly VanDeventer of Independence, Mo.; grandparents, Duane and Rosemary Potter of Great Bend; aunts and uncles, Jennifer and Shannon Schartz of Great Bend, Mike and Cindy Potter of Olathe, Kathy and Bill Turgeon of Akeley, Minn., Annette and Gary Rowe of Springfield, Mo., and Mark and Rochelle Abraitis of East Hartford, Conn.; three nephews, one niece and several cousins. She was preceded in death by one sister, Suzanne Gayle Potter. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Visitation will be until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, all at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the International Rett Syndrome Association or Kans for Kids, both in care of the funeral home, 1425 Patton Rd, Great Bend, KS 67530. Feb. 14, 2003

Richard L. Lewis 1944-2003
LARNED — Richard L. Lewis, 58, died Feb. 13 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born Feb. 18, 1944, in Concordia, the son of Lloyd and Naomi Bedwell Lewis. He married Karen M. Mead on Aug. 19, 1965, at Great Bend. A lifetime Larned resident, he was the former owner of Pawnee Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning and the former water supervisor for the city of Larned. Lewis was a member of United Methodist Church, American Legion and Kansas Rural Water Association, all of Larned. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Carla Leanne Wood of Larned; his father, Lloyd Lewis of Larned; and two brothers, Gerald Lewis of Larned and Steven Lewis of Roeland Park. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Ken Walker officiating. Burial will be at Larned cemetery with military honors. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday, all at the funeral home. Zenas Evans ‘Z.E.’ Boroughs 1926-2003
LYONS — Zenas Evans “Z.E.” Boroughs, 76, died Feb. 13 at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born July 20, 1926, at Great Bend, the son of Ruble and Wanda Bennett Boroughs. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1945 and attended Hutchinson Junior College. He married Constance Maxine Ericksten on April 30, 1950, at Great Bend. A longtime Lyons resident, he was owner of Boroughs Oil Company of Lyons. Boroughs was a member of United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge, both of Lyons. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; five sons, David E. Boroughs, Harold R. Boroughs and Michael G. Boroughs, all of Lyons, Paul M. Boroughs of Evanston, Wyo., and Nathan L. Boroughs of Hutchinson; two sisters, Marian B. Hunter of Derby and Wanda L. Wilson of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Barbara Jean Jackson, Betty Joyce Heffner, Ruth Lawrence Pontius and Mary Kathryn Bogle. Funeral will be at 10 am. Monday at the church with the Rev. Cindy Watson officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal cemetery in Lyons with full military honors by Ft. Riley. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Patrick A. Harren 1958-2003
WICHITA — Patrick A. Harren, 44, died Feb. 12. He was born April 3, 1958. He married Claudette Wilson. A resident of Wichita, he was a company line assemblyman for Raytheon Aircraft Company of Wichita. Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother, Mary Harren of Wichita; five brothers, Michael Harren of Westminster, Colo., Christopher Harren of Claremore, Okla., John Harren and Vincent Harren, both of Wichita, and Peter Harren of Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Brigid Harren of Aurora, Ill. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wichita. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.Memorials are suggested to Victory in the Valley of Wichita, in care of Cochran Mortuary and Crematory, 1411 N. Gerald Arnold Brandt 1920-2003
SALINA — Gerald Arnold Brandt, 82, died Feb. 10 at Salina. He was born Sept. 8, 1920, at Jamestown, N.D. He married Alice. He was a district manager in refrigeration sales in the Midwest until his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Alice A. of the home; four daughters, Sharon Metzler of LaCenter, Wash., Linda Davis of Salina, Kathleen Brown of Pinedale, Wyo., and Mary Walts of Great Bend; one brother, Donald Brandt of Plymouth, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Ryan Mortuary in Salina. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Salina.Burial will be at Mt. Fred A. Wondra 1906-2003
HOISINGTON — Fred A. Wondra, 96, died Feb. 11 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center of Hoisington. He was born May 7, 1906, at Odin, the son of Frank and Mary Monica Zorn Wondra. He married Eleanor J. Linsner on Nov. 14, 1928, at Hoisington. She died April 20, 1998. A lifetime resident of the Odin and Hoisington area, he was a retired farmer, stockman and an oilfield pumper for six years. Wondra was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Hoisington. Survivors include one son, Wilfred J. Wondra of Hewitt, Texas; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Woydziak of Hoisington and Rita Louise McDonald of Ontario, Canada; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Wondra; two daughters, Leona Elliott and Pauline Mater; four brothers, Frank Wondra, William Wondra, Hubert Wondra and Joseph Wondra; one sister, Mary Jenisch; and one great-grandson, Jaret Hanzlick. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home of Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. John cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the funeral home. Connie Lou Cline 1948-2003
GARFIELD — Connie Lou Cline, 54, died Feb. 10 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital of Larned. She was born Feb. 18, 1948, at Larned, the daughter of Howard and Jane Carlson Cline. A lifetime area resident, she lived at Rosewood Service in Great Bend. She was a member of Garfield United Methodist Church. Survivors include her parents of Garfield; and two brothers, Bob Cline and Bill Cline, both of Garfield. She was preceded in death by one brother, Stephen Cline. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel of Larned with the Rev. Ken Walker officiating. Burial will be at Garfield Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. Bernice M. Weber 1916-2003
Bernice M. Weber, 86 of Great Bend, died Feb. 9 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. She was born May 7, 1916, at Humphrey, Neb., the daughter of William G. and Odelia Bethscheider Weber. A resident of Great Bend since 1981, coming from Denver, Colo., she was retired from Coors Porcelain in Golden, Colo. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and St. Patrick Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one sister, Rosemary Potter of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene Weber, Paul Weber, Gerald Weber and Marvin Weber; and one sister, Dorothy Fitzgerald. Altar Society rosary will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, both at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 11, 2003
