Walter L. Munden 1941-2003
Walter L. Munden, 61, of Great Bend died Feb. 4 at his residence. He was born Nov. 22, 1941, at Byers the son of Albert W. and Myrtle M. Munden. He was a 1959 graduate of Stafford High School. A resident of Great Bend since 1981, coming from Ellinwood, he was a court security officer for Barton County and former Barton County Sherriff officer. Munden was a member of Eagles Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his companion, Dee Hapes of Great Bend; two sons, Robert Munden of Larned and Troy Munden of Kansas City; one sister, Virginia R. Keesling of Abeline; and three grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Neelands cemetery southwest of St. John with the Rev. Linda Toms officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 8 today at Minnis Chapel in St. John. David H. Honderick 1941-2003
RUSH CENTER — David H. Honderick, 61, died Feb. 4, at his residence in Rush Center. He was born Nov. 12, 1941, at Great Bend, the son of Harrison L. and Helen Weber Honderick. He married
Edra Lee Kershner on Sept. 16, 1962, at Salina. They were divorced. He married
Harriet Casper Stout on July 23, 1993, at Leonard, Texas. A longtime resident of Rush Center, he was owner and manager of Corner Bar and Grill in Rush Center. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Craig Honderick of Arlington, Texas, and Steven Stout of Houston; four daughters, Conni Souder of Keller, Texas, Carissa Stout of Owensboro, Ky., LaShelle Peters of La Crosse and Jennifer Stout of McPherson; two brothers, Dick Honderick of La Crosse and Neal Honderick of Belton, Mo.; and nine grandchildren. James B. Fuller 1927-2003
LAURIE, Mo., — James B. Fuller, 75, died Feb. 2 at Amarillo, Texas. He was born Dec. 16, 1927, in Kansas City, the son of Thomas and Marie Roth Fuller. He graduated from Kansas State University with a major in accounting. He married
Lila M. Rogers on Oct. 16, 1964, in Great Bend. A resident of Laurie, coming from Ellinwood and Sunrise Beach, Mo., he was former city clerk of Ellinwood and owner and operator of Bay Bridge Resort near Sunrise Beach until his retirement in 1991. Fuller was a member of Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church in Laurie, Highway Five Association, a volunteer fireman, scout master and city government. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Navy Reserves and World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Stephen Fuller of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Patricia Rush of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two step-sons, Rod Rogers of Salina and Dr. Jim Rogers of Amarillo; three step-daughters, Paula Rogers of Hoisington, Linnette Carlson of Rio Rancho, NM, and Janelle Dreiling of Frisco, Texas; two brothers, Thomas Fuller of Dallas, Texas, and Dale Fuller of Corpus Christi, Texas; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, the Rev. Gregory James Fuller. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. James Lawley officiating. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Gary Harms officiating. Ralph LeRoy Harper
SEATTLE, Wash. — Ralph LeRoy Harper, 95, died Jan. 17 at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. He was born in Winona in Western Kansas. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1926. A resident of Seattle, coming from New York City, N.Y. and Great Bend, he was both assistant manager and store manager of J.C. Penney in Great Bend, a buyer for J.C. Penney, was employed by Bon Marche and Boeing Aircraft, both of Seattle. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served as an antiaircraft gunner in World War II. Survivors include his companion, Violet McNamee of Seattle; one son, Ralph C. Harper of Livingston, Mont.; one daughter, Mary Baskin of Belleveue of Washington; four grandsons; and two stepsons. Edith Agnes Wigington 1902-2003
QUINTER — Edith Agnes Wigington, 100, died Feb. 3 at Gove County Medical Center LTCU in Quinter. She was born Sept. 19, 1902, in Harrison County, Mo., the daughter of Darby and Chloe Thomas. She graduated from Quinter High School. She married
Clifford Ulrich on Sept. 2, 1922. He died in 1948. She married
Elmer James Wigington on June 30, 1947. He died in 1972. A resident of Quinter, she was a cook at Gove County Medical Center for a number of years. Mrs. Wigington was a charter member of Gray Ladies Organization and Church of the Brethren, both of Quinter. Survivors include two daughters, Rosalie Bussen of Winona and Twila Bowsher of Great Bend; numerous grandchildren; numerous great-granchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Jackie McNitt and Doris Fleenor; four brothers, Roy Thomas, Clarence Thomas, Reuben Thomas and Lee Thomas; and three sisters, Jennie Thomas, Dorothy Shaw and Clara Hefner. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter with the Rev. Keith Funk officiating. Burial will be at Quinter Cemetery. Nancy L. Popp 1934-2003
RUSSELL — Nancy L. Popp died Jan. 27 at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, Calif. She was born Oct. 31, 1934, at Murray, Ky, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Freed Cotham. She received a bachelor’s degree from Murray State University and a master’s degree in 1962 from Indiana University. She married
Robert L. Popp Aug. 13, 1967, at Russell. A longtime resident of Russell, she was a teacher and coach at St. Cloud Florida High School, Chicago Area High School and the Department of Health and Human Performance at Fort Hays State University. She was also FHSU Women’s Athletic Director in 1970, Associate Athletic Director in 1975, and later a full-time professor, retiring in 1996. She was recognized by the Mortar Board Association as the “Top Prof” in the spring of 1995. Mrs. Popp was a member of the Russell Regional Hospital Board and St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Mark Popp of Canon city, Colo.; one daughter, Kelly Kley of Olathe; one sister, Bette Caddas of Murray, KY; mother, Clover Cotham of Murray; and three grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. The body was cremated. Esther E. Sausen 1922-2003
WICHITA — Esther E. Sausen, 80, died Feb. 2 at Catholic Care Center in Wichita. She was born Feb. 9, 1922, the daughter of Simon and Mollie Pudei Sausen. She was a graduate of Hoisington High School and received a nursing degree from the Dominican School of Nursing. A resident of Wichita, formerly of Hoisington and Great Bend, she was a retired registered nurse, having served St. Rose Hospital of Great Bend and St. Joseph Hospital of Wichita. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Wichita and a charter member of Immaculate Conception Daughters of Isabella Circle 744 of Great Bend. Survivors include one niece, Lisa Wallace of Wichita. Rosary will be at 7 tonight at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel of Wichita. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Chapel, Spiritual Life Center. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic cemetery in Hoisington. Harry P. Warren, 73, of Great Bend, died Feb. 2 at his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1929, at Pryor, Okla., the son of Samuel Alexander and Maude Esther Rinehart Warren. He married
Janey P. Doherty May 26, 1956, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1959, coming from Oklahoma, he was a welder and machinist for Warren Brothers Inc. in Great Bend. Warren was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend and Claflin Golf Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; five sons, Christopher Lee Warren of Great Bend, Thomas Joseph Warren of Corpus Christi, Texas, Philip James Warren of Wichita, Robert Matthew Warren of Las Vegas, Nev., and Paul Douglas Warren of Berkeley, Calif.; three daughters, Elizabeth Lowry of Santa Ana, Calif., Mary Peck of Wichita and Amy Antle of Newton; three brothers, Ralph Warren of Tulare, Calif., Alex Warren of Pryor and Nelson Warren of Rozel; one sister, Pauline Myers of Rosel; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Andrew Warren, Lewis Warren, Charlie Warren, Harold Warren, Walter Warren, and Raymond Warren; and two sisters, Martha Gabbard and Lorene Stafford. Anthony J. ‘Tony’ Basgall 1927-2003
LORETTO — Anthony J. “Tony” Basgall, 75, died Feb. 1 at Loretto. He was born April 30, 1927, in Rush County, the son of Alois G. and Mary Weber Basgall. A lifelong Rush County resident, he was a farmer. Basgall was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2340, both of Liebenthal, and was a member of Midstate Farmer’s Cooperative Board of Bison. He was a U.S.Army veteran, having served in Germany. Survivors include one brother, Al Basgall of Victoria; and four sisters, Sister Agnes Claire Basgall of Wichita, Esther Smith of Denver, Colo., Mildred M. Brungardt of Victoria and Alvina Ann Engel of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard Basgall, Victor Basgall, and A.A. Herman; and one sister, Sister Rita Basgall. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Leonard M. Wallert 1924-2003
WILSON — Leonard M. Wallert, 79, died Jan. 30 at Wilson Nursing Center. He was born Jan. 9, 1924, at Wilson, the son of Alex and Anne Friebus Wallert. He married
Osythe Kuck Nov. 19, 1943, at Russell. A lifetime Wilson area resident, he was a lease operator for Cities Service Oil Company. Wallert was a member of the American Legion of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of Great Bend; one son, Rick Wallert of Great Bend; one daughter, Jackie Adams of Bushton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Rocklin Wallert in 2000; three brothers, Edwin Wallert, Albert Wallert and Ray Wallert; and two sisters, Anna Betz and Alice Sheridan. Funeral will be at 2 today at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson with the Rev. Jim Wagner officiating. Burial will be at Wilson City Cemetery. Feb. 3, 2003
Marion Dale Peak 1946-2003
Marion Dale Peak, 56, of Great Bend, died Jan. 31 at his residence. He was born Sept. 18, 1946, at McLeansboro, Ill., the son of Ray and Iris Mitchell Peak. He married

Rebecca D. Comstock June 4, 1977, at Tulsa, Okla. A resident of Barton County most of his life, he was a delivery man for Tip Top Dairy and Rainbow Bread in the 1970s and owner and operator for M & P Exterior Remodeling.
Peak attended Community Christian Church in Pawnee Rock and was a former law enforcement reserve officer. Survivors include his wife of Great Bend; one son, Travis Peak of Great Bend; three daughters, Radonna Stewart of Sacramento, Calif., Regena O’Hern of Inola, Okla., and Ramona Marbut of Great Bend; his mother, Iris Peak of Newton; two brothers, Jim Peak of Wichita and Roy Peak of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren, Kristin Marie Stewart, Brandt Thomas Stewart, Kodie Lyn Patterson, Allison RaeAnn Peak, Karah Lyn Stewart, Kailyn Necole Patterson and Braydan Michael Peak; and three step-grandsons, Roger and Chris O’Hern and Tyler Marbut.

Donald N. Schauf 1925-2003
OVERLAND PARK — Donald N. Schauf, 77, died Jan. 30 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. He was born July 4, 1925, at Dubuque, the son of Nicholas and Gertrude Thill Schauf. A resident of Overland Park, he worked for Corps of Engineers for 32 years, retiring in 1988. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Schauf; one son, Mickey Schauf; two daughters, Melinda Blansit and Sheila Davila; and four grandsons. Albert Tittel 1919-2003
Albert Tittel, 83 of Great Bend, died Jan. 30 at VA Medical Center in Wichita. He was born March 18, 1919, in Ness County, the son of Johannas and Sophia Agnes Friebus Tittel. He married
Blanche Dunbar on Sept. 6, 1942, in San Diego, Calif. She died Aug. 31, 1998. A resident of Great Bend for 13 years, coming from Bazine, he was a self-employed farmer. Tittel was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a staff sergeant during World War II. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Lee Tittel of Douglas and Larry Dean Tittel of Ness City; four daughters, Barbara Ann White of Ness City, Beverly Jean Strouse of Wichita, Joyce Colleen Anschutz of Great Bend and Marlene Kay Hall of Winfield; three brothers, Theodore “Ted” Tittel of Adelanto, Calif., Werner “Vernie” Tittel of Hays and Carl Tittel of Gore, Okla.; one sister, Regina Stoppel of Ness City; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Otto Tittel, Edward Tittel and Garhardt “Gary” Tittel, and one sister, Betty Waterhouse. Funeral service was Saturday.
