Ralph Lessley Bradley

Ralph Lessley Bradley, 96 of Maple City died Friday, January 21, 2005 at the Dexter Care Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at the Maple City Community Church in Maple City. Pastor Larry Womacks and Pastor Norman Reeves will officiate.Interment will follow in the Maple City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2005 at the funeral home. Ralph was born June 23, 1908 to Jesse Quin Bradley and Anna Alice (Stephenson) Bradley in Grainola, OK. He lived in Chautauqua County, Cowley County and Huckelville County until moving to Maple City at the age of 16. He began work at Anderson Grocery. On October 16, 1929 he married Ruby Robinson in Arkansas City and the couple made their home in Arkansas City, Dodge City, Parsons, Geuda Springs and eventually in Maple City in 1945. She preceded him in death in March of 1982. He later married Marie Rozar on December 2, 1985 in Winfield and she preceded him in death in September of 2003. Ralph worked for J.C. Penny, Montgomery Ward and was a farmer since 1938. He was a charter member of the Maple City Community Church. He is survived by his daughter, Venicca McCauley and her husband, Walter of Winfield; step daughter, Maxine Dickenson and her husband, Ott of Dexter; sister, Eva Maxwell of Wichita; brother, Delbert Bradley of Wichita; two grandchildren, five step grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and nine step great great grandchildren. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, wives; sister, Alverta and brother, Homer Bradley.
Memorials have been established with the Maple City Community Church or the Dexter Care Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City is in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph Falkingham

Ralph Falkingham, 96, Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. Born near Rock on May 13, 1908, he was the son of John H. and Etta (Rice) Falkingham. He farmed in several communities in Kansas including Fredonia, Sharon Springs, Galesburg, and Arkansas City. Survivors include his son, Elmer of Buffalo, Mo.; daughters, Janet Miller of Medicine Lodge, Phyllis Wilcoxen of Winfield; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Dobbs and Muriel Shaffer; and a son, John Falkingham.
A memorial has been established for the First Christian Church or Winfield Food Pantry. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Thelma Herr Baker

Opal Marie Applegate, 79, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Home of Arkansas City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Opal was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Arkansas City to Anthony William and Anna Marie (Schindler) Schwartz. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1944. Opal then attended St. John's Nursing School and later Wichita Hospital Nursing School. On July 28, 1951, she married Eugene Henry Applegate in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. She worked as a registered nurse for several years at St. Mary's Hospital of Winfield, the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital (SCKRMC), and a private duty nurse until she quit to take care of her family. Survivors include her husband, Jake of Wichita; three sons, Alan and Don of Winfield, and Charlie and his wife, Joanne of Wichita; one daughter, Jean and her husband, Mike Conkling of Pretty Prairie, Kan.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Victor Schwartz; and two sisters, Catherine Bowman and Dorothy Chrastek.
A memorial has been established with Creative Community Living. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Stanley C. Spray

Stanley C. Spray, 77, Sun City, Ariz., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005. A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at the Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church, in Sun City. Stanley was born June 19, 1927, in Caldwell. He graduated from Geuda Springs High School in 1944. On Feb. 1, 1945, he married Betty Vinson, also of Geuda Springs, in Harrison Ark. They made their home in Arkansas City, then moved to Fremont, Calif., and later retired to Sun City. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Sun City, Ariz.; three sons, Gary Spray of Phoenix, Ariz., Mark Spray of Lewisville, Colo., and Matt Spray of Livermore, Calif.; a sister, LaVer Chandler of Sun City; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sunland Mortuary.

Opal Marie Applegate

Opal Marie Applegate, 79, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Medicalodge North. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Creative Community Living. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Nancy Ulatowski Sherman

Nancy Ulatowski Sherman, 66, Purcell, Okla., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Purcell, Okla. The Rev. Mike Vaught will officiate. Her ashes will be interred with her parents in Missouri. Born June 24, 1938, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Edward and Harriet Ulatowski. She married James J. Sherman, April 12, 1958. She spent most of her life in Arkansas City. Survivors include three sons, James Roy, Steven Jay and Jerry Edward; and one grandson.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Women's Resource Center, P.O. Box 5089, Norman, OK 73070 or to Second Chance Animal Sanctuary, 4500 24th Ave. N.W., Norman, OK 73069. Arrangements were handled by Caskets, Inc., Del City, Okla.

Maxine Thomas

Maxine Thomas, 70, Arkansas City, retired housekeeper for the Winfield State Hospital, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, in Wichita. Private family services will be held at a later date. Cremation has been effected. Survivors include her daughter, Tina Thomas of Arkansas City; sister, Velma Williams of Atlanta; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornerstone Cremation Society, Wichita.

Roy H. Hunter

Roy H. Hunter, 95, Winfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Grace United Methodist Church. Private family inurnment will be held. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-8 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Born Oct. 28, 1909, in Milan, he was the son of Thomas Pearl and Rose (Bandy) Hunter. He worked as a mechanic most of his life and retired from the Kansas Department of Transportation. Survivors include his sons, Darold Hunter of Jet, Okla., and Ted Hunter of Osawatomie; daughters, Clifdel Dowler of O'Fallon, Mo., and Joyce Erkolein of Rose Hill; 12 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and eight-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Sinclair) Hunter; one brother; one sister; and four grandchildren.
A memorial has been established for the Grace United Methodist Church, Winfield. Contributions may be made to the church or through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Vera Marie (Hughes) Rogue Morris

Vera Marie (Hughes) Rogue Morris, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in Springfield, Mo. She was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Arkansas City. She married "Millie" Rogue in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. She moved around a lot and ended up in a nursing home in Springfield, Mo. She was very active with the Salvation Army in Arkansas City for many years. Survivors include five children, Roxanne Via of Arizona, "Cindy" Rogue, "Mickey" Rogue Jr. of California, Rose Hollins and Marian Abbot of Florida; two grandchildren that she raised, Maurice Rogue of Springfield, Mo., and Frances Vaughan of Arkansas City; sister, Cecil Finnern; many nieces and nephews; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, including Mickey Rogue and Mark Rogue of Springfield, Mo., Jonathan Vaughan III, Sheri Vaughan and Heaven Vaughan.
Arrangements are under the direction of Greenlawn North of Springfield, Mo.

Ralph L. Bradley

Funeral services for Ralph L. Bradley, 96, Maple City, who died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Maple City Community Church in Maple City. Pastor Larry Womacks and Pastor Norman Reeves officiated. Interment was in the Maple City Cemetery. Musicians were Nedra Musgrove and Bwana Drennan. Casket bearers were Dean Maxwell, Steven Bradley, Jack Bradley, Jerry Maxwell, Jim Bradley and Richard Vanetta. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Bradley, Paul Bradley, Web Roth, Bob Gray, Terry Maxwell, Bob Chrismer, John Hencey, Jess Bradley, Don Crow, Jerry Bowman and Joe Rush.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Virginia Adams

Virginia Adams, 86, Wellington, formerly of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wellington. Funeral services for Virginia will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, in the chapel of the Day Funeral Home. Officiating will be Willard Isaacs, Pastor Kenny Kelly and Pastor Dane Massey. The eulogy will be delivered by Tim Isaacs. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, in Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City, Kansas. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. She was born the daughter of Archibald Bigley and Ferol (Heath) Bigley on Oct. 19, 1918, in Arkansas City. She was a retired school teacher from the IXL School District in Arkansas City, where she had taught for 25 years. On Dec. 24, 1941, she married Percy Raymond "Pete" Adams in Wichita. He died on Dec. 13, 2003. Survivors include her daughters, Janie Dillow and her husband, Larry of Dallas, Texas, Bonnie Isaacs and her husband, Willard of Wellington, and Amy Neal of Arkansas City; brothers, Ben Bigley and his wife, Barbara of Renton, Wash., and Bill Bigley and his wife, Dee of McAllen, Texas; seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Kim Cousins, who was taken tragically in the Oklahoma City, Okla., bombing; great-granddaughter, Emily May Foster who was taken at the age of 17 months; brother, Lloyd Bigley, sisters, Lorraine Mumma and Ernestine McKeever.
A memorial has been established in her name and loving memory with Wellington Christian Academy Tuition Assistance Fund, 205 N. Hoover Road, Wellington, KS 67152. Vera Marie (Hughes) Roque Morris

Vera Marie (Hughes) Roque Morris, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in Springfield, Mo. She was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Arkansas City. She married "Millie" Roque in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. She later married Alvie Morris of Arkansas City. She moved around a lot and ended up in a nursing home in Springfield, Mo. William Carl Tatum

William Carl Tatum, 73, former Burden, Kansas resident, died Friday morning, Jan. 20, 2005 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. He was born June 30, 1931 in rural Burden. He was the son of William and Alma (Neill) Tatum. He graduated Burden High School in 1949. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force, and was discharged in 1956. He returned from the Air Force, to Burden, and became a farmer. He was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church and the Clinton Masonic Lodge of Burden. Survivors include sons, David, Edward and Brad Tatum; daughters, Kathy Tatum and Becky Reynard; a brother, Robert Tatum, and wife Susie of Burden; a sister, JoAnn Hafenstein and husband Marvin, of Burden; There are also many grand children, great grand children, neices and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents. Services at to be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Burden United Methodist Church. Masonic and military services will follow at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Burden. Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m., Monday, Jan 31 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet friends from 5 until 6 p.m. that evening.
A memorial has been established in Tatum's name for the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

William J. Harper

William J. Harper, 69, Warrensburg, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Warrensburg Manor Care Center. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Christ Episcopal Church of Warrensburg. Father Alfred J. Jewson officiated. Interment was in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post No. 131 and VFW Post 2513. Born May 3, 1935, in Arkansas City, he was the son of William N. Harper and Grace Miller Harper. He was a machinist for Harmon Industry of Warrensburg as a spot welder until his retirement. After his wife's death he opened the Mary Jane's Restaurant in Warrensburg. Survivors include a son, Gale Wayne Harper; four daughters, Barbara Prewett, Gwendolyn Codilla, Kimberly Codilla and Belinda Milton, all of Warrensburg; his mother, Grace Harper of Arkansas City; a brother, Gale Wayne Harper of Evansville, Ind.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane (Zellmer) Harper; his father; one grandson; and two sisters, Margaret Weston and Delores Peters.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg, Mo.
