Albert Steinle 1918-2003
RUSSELL — Albert Steinle, 85, died Aug. 26 at his home in Russell. He was born July 22, 1918 on a farm in Russell County, the son of George and Mollie Keller Steinle. He attended Widdefield Rural School. He married Margaret Elizabeth Palmer Nov. 4, 1939, at Russell. She died Dec. 20, 1983. A resident of Russell, coming from the Bunker Hill area, he worked on the family farm as a young man and worked as a lease operator for Skelly Oil Company, which was later purchased by Getty Oil and then by Texaco Oil Company, from 1943 to 1984. Steinle was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include one son, Richard Albert Steinle of Dorrance; one daughter, Kimberly Sue Wann of Russell; longtime companion, Doris Rohr of Hays; two sisters, Violet Stone of Great Bend and Helen Wilhelm of Dorrance; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alexander Steinle, Sam Steinle, Ben Steinle and George Steinle; and four sisters, Edith Steinle, Eunice Barton, Ella Mae Moser and Wilma Belk. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Henry J. Hartman and Diane Wagner officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran cemetery in Russell. Friends may call from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. today at Pohlman’s Mortuary in Russell. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the church in Russell, First Lutheran Church of Dorrance or Southwind Hospice, all in care of the mortuary. Aug. 28, 2003

John Currence Gregg 1921-2003
LYONS — John Currence Gregg, 82, died Aug. 25, at his residence in Lyons. He was born Aug. 13, 1921, at Nickerson, the son of Murra and Sarah Mummey Gregg. He graduated from Nickerson High School and Hutchinson Juco. He married Vivian Emogene Cody on June 8, 1941, at Nickerson. A resident of Lyons since 1968, he was a railroad telegrapher, retiring in 1982, after 38 years of service for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. Gregg was a member of First Christian Church of Lyons, Sunflower Shrine Club of Great Bend, Russell Shrine Club of Russell, McPherson Shrine Club of McPherson, Reno-Rice County Consistory Club of Hutchinson, Royal Lodge 192, A.F. & A.M. of Lyons, Henry Rohr Chapter 204 O.E.S. of St. John, Dual member of Queen Esther Chapter 32 O.E.S. of Lyons, Reno Chapter 34 R.A.M. of Hutchinson, Hutchinson Council 13 Cryptic Masons of Hutchinson, Reno Commandery 26 K.T. of Kansas of Hutchinson, I.S.I.S. Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Salina, Scottish Rite of F.M., S.J. Valley of Salina, Kansas Priory 33 K.Y.C.H., Grand Order of the Sword of Bunker Hill, Order 117 of Dodge City, Kansas Council 53 Knight Masons of the United States of America of Wichita, Kansas York Rite College 125, Order of High Priesthood, Order of the Silver Trowl, Kansas Association of Past Commanders, River Jordan Tabernacle 38, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, Sunflower Council 383 of Allied Masonic Degrees of Wichita, and numerous other subordinate affiliated bodies; a life member of the 12th Armored Division Association, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3184 of Lyons, and life member of American Legion Post 129 of Lyons. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II from 1941 through 1945. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Johnnie Steven Gregg of Tulsa, Okla., Terry Gregg of Great Bend and Curt Gregg of Boone, N.C.; one daughter, Janice Thomas of Sapulpa, Okla.; two sisters, Merla Cunday of Hutchinson and Martha Holmes of Boise, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Gregg, and one sister, Valeta Pentz. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Tom Eastman officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Shrine Travel Club Fund of Great Bend or the church, both in care of Sillin Funeral Home In Lyons. Aug. 27, 2003

Thesis L. Warlick 1929-2003
LYONS — Thesis L. Warlick, 73, died Aug. 25 at Lyons District Hospital in Lyons. She was born Oct. 21, 1929, at Lyons, the daughter of Theodore and Margaret Short McCampbell. She married Lawrence Warlick March 9, 1951, at Long Beach, Calif. A resident of Lyons since 1988, coming from Lakewood, Calif., she was a retired school teacher. Mrs. Warlick was a member of Latter Day Saints of Great Bend and Daughters of American Revolution, Stone Corrall Chapter of Lyons. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Clinton Warlick of Garden Grove, Calif.; one daughter, Charlotte Hamade of Lakewood; one brother, David McCampbell of Liberty, Mo.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons, with Bishop Clifford Summers officiating. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Meade cemetery in Meade. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, in care of the funeral home. Robert M. Benham 1957-2003
Robert M. Benham, 46, of Great Bend, died Aug. 16. He was born Feb. 27, 1957, at Wyandotte, Mich., the son of Robert Lee Jr. and Lucy Ann Ford Benham. A resident of Great Bend for 28 years, coming from Allen Park, Mich., he was a jeweler and owner of Creative Craftsman of Great Bend. Benham was a former member of Church of Christ, Kansas Jewelers Association and Great Bend Community Theater. Survivors include one son, Zachary M. Benham of Great Bend; one daughter, Amber L. Benham of Great Bend; his father of Southgate, Mich.; one brother, Brian J. Benham of Dearborn Heights, Mich.; and two sisters, Nancy L. Nelson of Greensboro, N.C., and Barbara J. Brooks of Allen Park, Mich. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Barton County Relay for Life in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Aug. 26, 2003

Marcelline ‘Marcie’ Ann Suchy 1932-2003
Marcelline “Marcie” Ann Suchy, 71, of Great Bend, died Aug. 24 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born May 21, 1932, at St. Leo, the daughter of William and Martha Blasi Schwartz. She married Albion “Al” Suchy Nov. 26, 1949, at Great Bend. He died May 13, 1999. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a homemaker and owner of Great Bend Redi-Mix Inc. Mrs. Suchy was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include two sons, Randy Suchy and Rick Suchy, both of Great Bend; five daughters, Debra Langer and Brenda Ohnmacht, both of Great Bend; Arlene Manning and Diane Morris, both of Ellinwood, and Coleen “Coke” Suchy Clark of Bushton; two brothers, Rheinard Schwartz of Chase and Maurice Schwartz of Great Bend; three sisters, Lydia Weber and Edie Keeler, both of Great Bend, and Rosie Henning of Willowdale; 25 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Curtis Suchy; one brother, Arthur Schwartz; and one sister, Sally Gregg. St. Rose Altar Society Rosary will be at 3 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Reginald Urban officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park north of Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of the funeral home. Aug. 26, 2003

Mark L. Kennedy 1957-2003
Mark L. Kennedy, 46, of Great Bend, died Aug. 23 at his home. He was born Aug. 3, 1957, at Ft. Chaffee, Ark., the son of Russell L. and Connie Lee Gross Kennedy. He married Danita Gage Sept. 25, 1982, at La Crosse. A resident of Great Bend since 1980, coming from La Crosse, he was a tile installer and did interior finish work, and coached for the Great Bend Recreation Commission. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Michael Kennedy and Davey Kennedy, both of the home; one daughter, Nicole Kennedy of the home; father and step-mother, Russell L. and Judy Kennedy of Ft. Mill, N.C.; brother, Lonnie Kennedy of Charlotte, N.C.; two half-brothers, Jason Kleweno and Ryan Kleweno, both of Columbia, Mo.; one sister, Jonie Kennedy of Ft. Mill; and grandmother, Helen Gross of Bazine. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jeff Kennedy. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Sam Flick officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park north of Great Bend. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Children’s Educational Fund in care of the funeral home. Aug. 26, 2003

Douglas L. Harmon
Douglas L. Harmon, 46, of Great Bend, went to his Heavenly father on Aug. 21 as a result of a vehicle accident. He was the son of Laverne and Gwen B. Harmon of Great Bend. He married Susan Boele Jan. 12, 1986. Survivors include his mother of Great Bend; one sister, Sandra Harmon of Great Bend; two sons, Douglas U. Harmon and Izaak A. Harmon, both of Ellinwood; and one daughter, Eden C. Harmon of Ellinwood. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Amber I. Harmon. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at Stafford Cemetery. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Aug. 26, 2003

Leona M. Welch 1926-2003
LYONS — Leona M. Welch, 77, died Aug. 24 at Lyons District Hospital in Lyons. She was born Feb. 24, 1926, at Claflin, the daughter of Adam and Margaret Radenberg Disque. She was a graduate of Claflin High School. She married Jack L. Welch June 4, 1950, at Holyrood. A resident of Lyons since 1950, coming from Claflin, she was a former employee of Lorraine State Bank, Montgomery Ward Catalog Store and Four Seasons Flower Shop in Lyons. Mrs. Welch was a member of First Christian Church of Lyons, where she served as deacon, was a member of Christian Women Fellowship Faith Group, Queen Esther chapter 32 Order of Eastern Star, past worthy matron of Queen Esther chapter, past president of Past Matrons Club of Lyons and held several grand appointments of Grand Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Alan Welch of McPherson; Gordon Welch of Wichita and Kevin Welch of Lyons; six brothers, Harvey Disque of Salina, Herman Disque of Lyons, Marlin Disque of Hoisington, and Walter Disque, Edgar Disque and Charles Disque, all of Claflin; four sisters, Mable Flickinger of Hutchinson, Aline Housier of Chandler, Okla., and Edna Disque of Claflin; three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Disque and Martin Disque; and two sisters, Velma Disque and Grace Disque. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Tom Eastman officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal cemetery with an Eastern Star graveside service. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Lyons Bell and Star Fund, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 26, 2003

Daryl L. Korf 1959-2003
HANSTON — Daryl L. Korf, 44, died Aug. 21 near Hanston. He was born Aug. 3, 1959, at Dodge City, the son of Vernon and S. Aileen Koontz Korf. He married Rosie Moreno-Stiles March 5, 1988, at Hanston. A resident of Hanston, he was a feed mill operator for Pawnee Valley Feeders at Hanston. Korf was a member of United Methodist Church of Hanston, National Rifle Association and North American Hunters Club. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Asa Stiles of Hanston; two daughters, Sofia Brown and Candis Stiles, both of Hanston; three brothers, Gary Korf and Darren Korf, both of Hanston, and Galen Korf of Hays; three sisters, JoAnn Hubin of Hanston, Joyce Noland of Chinle, Ariz., Gloria Bowersox of Olathe; and one grandchild. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. The casket will be closed. Burial will be at Hanston Cemetery. Soloma R. ‘Sally’ Gregg 1922-2003
Soloma R. “Sally” Gregg, 80, of Great Bend, died Aug. 21 at Hospice of Reno County in Hutchinson. She was born Oct. 4, 1922, at St. Leo, the daughter of William and Martha Blassi Schwartz. She married Floyd Gregg June 12, 1944, at Ellinwood. He died Aug. 9, 1987. A resident of Great Bend most of her life, she was a retired cook for Elks Lodge 1127, American Legion Post 180 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, all of Great Bend. Mrs. Gregg was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altar Society and Eagles Auxiliary, all of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Gregg of Russell and Thomas Gregg of Susank; two brothers, Morris Schwartz of Great Bend and Reinard Schwartz of Chase; four sisters, Lydia Weber, Marciline Suchy and Edith Keeler, all of Great Bend, and Rosie Henning of St. Leo; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Gregg; and one brother, Arthur Schwartz. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. today, with a vigil at 7 tonight, both at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Caroline A. Gerritzen 1915-2003
CLAFLIN — Caroline A. Gerritzen, 88, died Aug. 22 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. She was born March 29, 1915, in rural Claflin, the daughter of Julius L. and Carrie Rous Wendtlandt. She married Peter A. Gerritzen Oct. 26, 1936, at Claflin. He died Sept. 10, 1990. A lifetime resident of the Claflin area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Gerritzen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Odin. Survivors include two sons, Herman Gerritzen of Ocala, Fla., and Eugene Gerritzen of Katy, Texas; three daughters, Rose Stearns of Columbus, Neb., Barbara Gerritzen of Hays and Lillian Shaver of Sugar Land, Texas; three sisters, Rose Wendtlandt of Holyrood, Pauline McLean of Garden Grove, Calif., and Agnes Arends of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Penka and Mary Ramsey. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at Holy Family cemetery in Odin. Friends may call from 1 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Violet Irene McCarty 1920-2003
HOLYROOD — Violet Irene McCarty, 83, died Aug. 23 at Leisure Homestead in St. John. She was born April 16, 1920, at Russell, the daughter of Ferdinand and Amalia “Mollie” Lohman Steinert. She married Alfred William McCarty Nov. 20, 1937, in Russell. He died Aug. 17, 1996. A resident of Holyrood for 40 years, coming from Russell and Gorham, she and her husband had owned and operated a motel in Hardtner for five years. Mrs. McCarty was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and Quilting Bee, both of Holyrood. Survivors include two sons, Jerry L. McCarty of Great Bend and Larry W. McCarty of Kiowa; two sisters, Melvina Bostelman of Salina and Dorlene Schaeffer of Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbert Steinert. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. John Sharp officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hardtner Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. Aug. 24, 2003
