George Homer Delaney 1915-2003
NESS CITY — George Homer Delaney, 88, died Sept. 2 at Ness County Hospital in Ness City. He was born April 17, 1915, at the family farm south of Ness City, the son of Daniel Boone and Dillie M. Harrison Delaney. He married
Fern R. Libby March 3, 1934, in Kinsley. A resident of Ness City since February 2000, coming from Ness County, he was a farmer and rancher. Delaney was a member of Odd Fellow Lodge of Ness City, Tired Iron Club of Kinsley and a former member of the school board of the old Cleveland School in Ness County. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Clayton “Jake” Delaney of Great Bend and Gene Delaney of Ness City; one daughter, Sharon Munsch of Ness City; one brother, Lorin “Bub” Delaney of Ness City; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; three stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Dechant; seven brothers, Harvey Delaney, Fred Delaney, Sam Delaney, Buford Delaney and three infants; four sisters, Elsie Turley, Elva Cranston, Ola Surprise and Leona Music; and one grandson, Stephen Dechant. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Ness City Cemetery. Jeffrey Ray Santos Garcia 1981-2003
LARNED — Jeffrey Ray Santos Garcia, 22, died Aug. 29 near Larned. He was born May 29, 1981, at Kanohe, Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of Joe and Annie Fe Duenas Garcia. He was a 2000 graduate of Larned High School and a February 2003 graduate of Brick Layer and Craft School of Wichita. A resident of Larned since 1991, coming from Oceanside, Calif., he was a brick layer. Garcia was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Larned and Brick Layers Union Local Chapter 15 of Wichita. Survivors include his parents of Larned; one brother, Joe Garcia Jr. of Larned; one sister, Tiffany Garcia of Larned; and his grandmother, Ana D. Santos of Guam. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Weldon ‘Leroy’ Miller 1926-2003
Weldon “Leroy” Miller, 77, of Great Bend, died Sept. 1 at Hays. He was born March 3, 1926, at Rooks County, the son of Robert Henry and Lulu Weems Miller. He married
Shirley Ann Benoit Jan. 5, 1957, in Norton. She died July 20, 2003. A lifetime area resident, he was a retired oilfield driller for Slawson Drilling. Miller was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons, George Miller and Robert Miller, both of Great Bend; three daughters, Kathy Robinson of Panama City, Fla., Mary Cooley of Great Bend and Cheryl Roa of Hays; one brother, Leland Miller of Brighton, Colo.; 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, William Miller, Cleo Miller, Virgel Miller and Earl Miller; and three sisters, Helen Paden, Lucille Miller and Louella Miller. John ‘Jake’ J. Hays 1904-2003
LARNED — John “Jake” J. Hays, 98, died Sept. 1, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born Oct. 17, 1904, at Zook, the son of John Henry and Lucy Matilda Buhrer Hays. A resident of Pawnee County since 1987, coming from Montana, he was a farmer. Hays was a member of Larned United Methodist Church and past member of Eagles Lodge of Wichita. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include one brother, Albert Hays of Zook; and one sister, Goldie Horton of Zook. Brian Kent ‘Tuna’ Frenzl 1963-2003
Brian Kent “Tuna” Frenzl, 40, of Great Bend, died Sept. 1 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 18, 1963, at Hoisington, the son of Bill and Mary Ann Hickel Frenzl. A lifetime area resident, he formerly worked for DS&W and was employed by Claflin Pump and Supply. Frenzl was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Great Bend Side Winders. Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; his fiancé, Rita Budig of Great Bend; three brothers, Keith Frenzl of Great Bend, Bob J. Frenzl of Salina and Roy Frenzl of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and three sisters, Linda Stukey of Great Bend, Kathy Gosser of Clay Center, Neb., and Connie Stanley of Bella Vista, Ark. Charles E. Barker 1918-2003
WICHITA — Charles E. Barker, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, died Aug. 26 in Wichita. Services were held Saturday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Wichita, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery, Wichita. Charles was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Osceola, Mo. The family moved many times throughout Missouri, western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Charles graduated from Lakin High School in Lakin. Charles entered the Army in March 1942 and served in the Aleutian Islands until he was discharged in November 1945. Charles married
Beulah Snyder, Scott City, Nov. 5, 1942. After his discharge from the Army, they resided in Scott City until 1968. While in Scott City, Charles was the purchasing agent for Wheatland Electric. In 1968, the family moved to Great Bend, where Charles was the contract manager for Western Power until he retired in 1985. Charles and Beulah moved to Wichita in 2001. Charles was an active member of the Scott City community. He served on the city council, taught Red Cross First Aid classes and was a member of First Baptist Church, Lion’s Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beulah; three daughters, Charlene Fyler and husband Ken of Wichita, Valjean Hackerott of Wichita and Sandi Krewson and husband Richard of Spearville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Esther Mueller 1920-2003
HUTCHINSON — Esther Mueller, 82, died Aug. 29 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Sept. 9, 1920, at Hudson, the daughter of Max and Minna Nolte Teichman. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and Fort Hays State University and received a teaching certificate. She married
Allen F. Mueller June 7, 1943, at Hudson. He died Oct. 20, 1995. A resident of Hutchinson since 1946, coming from Hudson, she was a former teacher, homemaker and longtime employee of Kansas Job Service. Mrs. Mueller was a member of First Congregational Church. Survivors include one son, Mike Mueller of Wichita; two daughters, Susan Fullmer of Hutchinson and Sandra Yarrish of Wichita; one brother, Walter Teichman of Hudson; two sisters, Rosine Parrish of Great Bend and Elsie Daniels of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugo Teichman and Otto Teichman; and two sisters, Ida Nonamaker and Velma Parrish. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Ronald D. Smith 1955-2003
SALINA — Ronald D. Smith, 48, died Aug. 31 at Salina Regional Health Center. He was born Aug. 8, 1955, in Hoisington, the son of Calvin Emitt and Betty Jean Carroll Smith. He was a graduate of Hoisington High School and Salina Area Vo-Tech. A resident of Salina, he was a driver for United Parcel Service in Salina. Survivors include one daughter, Chelsey Kay Smith of Salina; his parents of Hoisington; and three sisters, Rhonda Dezotell of Haysville, Virginia L. Smith and Dee Ann Smith, both of Hoisington. Elwin D. “Pete” Lamb Sept. 24, 1945, at Smith Center. He died Sept. 26, 1985. She was a resident of Great Bend for 56 years, coming from Red Cloud, Neb. Mrs. Lamb was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. Survivors include four sons, Jerald A. Lamb, Danny D. Lamb and LeRoy G. Lamb, all of Great Bend, and Ricky L. Lamb of Hoisington; two daughters, Sandra M. Miller of Kanopolis and Glennis F. McNett of Great Bend; one sister, Julia Jennings of Albion, Neb.; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Clydai Marie Schaffer June 15, 1949. She died in 1973. A resident of Arkansas City, coming from Rush Center, he worked for Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company as a field meter man in the Otis and Macksville areas. Flamik was a member of Western Fraternal Life Association, Lodge 95 of Timken and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3147. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in 19th Coast Artillery. Survivors include two daughters, Debra Byrne of Arkansas City and Linda Shuman of Snyder, Texas; one brother, Oliver Flamik of Rush Center; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild. Marvin Reed June 28, 1947, at Kinsley. He died May 27, 1988. A resident of Neodesha, coming from Pratt, she worked in the dietary department of Larned State Hospital and was a homemaker. Mrs. Reed was a member of Christian Church in Larned. Waldine L. Wagner Dec. 16, 1951, at Galatia. He died Sept. 16, 1985. A resident of Hoisington for 49 years, coming from Galatia, she had worked for Fuller Brush in Great Bend, Homestead Villa in Hoisington as a nurse aide and was a homemaker and baby sitter. Mrs. Wagner was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Hoisington. Survivors include one son, Delbert Wagner of Hoisington; two daughters, Janice Delgado of Gardner and Judy Waldron of Riverside, Calif.; one sister, Christine Damilini of Wichita; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Orville Hamilton, Sidney Hamilton, Hansel Hamilton, Leon Hamilton and R.C. Hamilton; and two sisters, Gladys Swartzlander and Elvira Silva.
