Helen E. Thompson 1935-2004
BISON — Helen E. Thompson, 68, died Jan. 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 30, 1935, in Russellville, Ky., the daughter of William and Maude Whitman Hallman. She married
G.W. (Waymon) Thompson May 4, 1957, at Russellville. Mrs. Thompson was a Bison resident for two and a half years, moving there from Hugoton, where she had been a resident since 1977, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, David W. Thompson, Pratt, Daniel L. Thompson, Gillette, Wyo., and Dennis R. Thompson, Corydon, Ind.; one daughter, Deborah K. Brashier, Norman, Okla.; four half brothers, Delmar Whitman, Stevie Rager, Kenny Rager and Barry Pitts, all of Russellville; one sister, Bessie Rose, Auburn, Ky.; two half sisters, Gayle Pursley and Faye West, both of Mobile, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Hallman, a half sister, Shirley Parker, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

Herald Robert Carden 1912-2004
GARFIELD — Herald Robert Carden, 91, died Jan. 22 at the Kansas Soldiers’ Home, Fort Dodge. He was born Sept. 30, 1912, in Garfield, the son of Robert and Anna E. Nystrom Carden. He married
Mary Jean Grandy Feb. 22, 1940. She died July 10, 1995. A lifetime Garfield resident, he was self employed in petroleum delivery, food and rentals.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Carden was a member of the Congregational Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40 and 8, Eagles, Lions, Masons, and served as president of the Over 50 Club, all of Garfield. He served as fire department chief, city councilman and mayor.
Survivors include: one son, Dennis Carden, Larned; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Carden, one brother Howard Carden, and one sister Pauline.
Graveside service with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Garfield Cemetery, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. There will be no visitation. Beckwith Mortuary Inc. in Larned is in charge of funeral arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the Garfield American Legion, in care of Lowell Shottenkirk, 2035 Starlight Drive, Salina, KS 67401.

Harry C. Foster 1915-2004
CLAFLIN — Harry C. Foster, 88, died Jan. 24 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 8, 1915, in Ellsworth County near Wilson, the son of Ralph and Anna Davidson Foster. He married
Helen K. Radenberg April 26, 1939, at Claflin. She died June 22, 2001. A farmer and stockman, he was a lifetime Claflin resident.
Foster was a member of the United Methodist Church in Claflin and National Sons of the American Revolution.
Survivors include two sons, James A. Foster, Salina, and Jack E. Foster, Leawood; two daughters, Virginia Sayler, Lawrence, and Marilyn Kirk, Evanston, Ill.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Karen Elaine Sayler.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Janet Myers officiating. Burial will be at Claflin Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.; and 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. V. Marian Sauer 1921-2004
V. Marian Sauer, 82, died Jan. 23 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born May 20, 1921, at Morland, the daughter of James Floyd and Ida Mabel Christman Ludlow. She married
Bernard A. “Ben” Sauer Nov. 8, 1944, at Wichita. He died Oct. 7, 1991. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Great Bend for 47 years, coming from Wichita.
Mrs. Sauer was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary and Northwest F.C.E., all of Great Bend.
Survivors include two daughters, M. Lynn Wooster and husband Paul, Great Bend, and Katrina A. Sauer, Aurora, Colo.; one grandson, Thomas R. Romme Jr.; two step-grandchildren, Robert P. Wooster and Patricia R.W. Gottschalk and husband Gregg; one great-grandson, Nathan Fishburn; and four step-great-grandchildren: Shane Gottschalk, Shayla Gottschalk, Janelle Wooster and Jayla Wooster. She was preceded in death by two sons, Larry W. Sauer and David G. Sauer, and two sisters, Margaret Brundege and Florence Engstrand.
Vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church with Father Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Weston ‘Wes’ Stambaugh 1931-2004
Weston “Wes” Stambaugh, 72, of Great Bend, died Jan. 21 at his residence. He was born July 2, 1931, at Macksville, the son of Jay K. and Lyala Belle Reazin Stambaugh. He married
Peggy A. Christiansen July 19, 1953, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend, he was employed by Foley Tractor for 43 years. Stambaugh was a member of American Legion Post 180 of Great Bend and was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Dale Stambaugh of Muskegon, Mich., Jerry Stambaugh of Hoisington and Jay Stambaugh of Great Bend; one daughter, Carol Keyes of Great Bend; five brothers, Monte Stambaugh of Great Bend, Kenny Stambaugh of Enid, Okla., Gary Stambaugh of Woodward, Okla., Alan Stambaugh of Hutchinson and Leo Stambaugh of Georgetown, Colo.; three sisters, Jaynell Matzek of Norton, Nancy Fischer of Fruitland Park, Fla., and Julia Stambaugh of Elk City, Okla.; five grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Nolan Stambaugh and Doyle Stambaugh.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Charter Funeral Chapel in Great Bend, with the Rev. Thomas Reazin officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial cemetery north of Great Bend. Anna Margaret Hickel 1912-2004
ELLINWOOD — Anna Margaret Hickel, 91, died Jan. 22 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born Dec. 19, 1912, at Halstead, the daughter of John P. and Anna Schneider Considine. She was a 1930 graduate of Halstead High School and a 1937 graduate of Emporia Normal School. She married
Joe Schaefer June 28, 1945, at Ellinwood. He died June 18, 1948. She married
Arthur R. Hickel April 6, 1953, at Ellinwood. He died June 17, 2002. A resident of Ellinwood since 1946, coming from Peabody and Burlington, she was a school teacher in Ellinwood from 1946 to 1953, Burlington from 1942 to 1946 and Walnut Grove one-room school house west of Peabody from 1937 to 1941. She was also co-owner of Ellinwood Packing Plant. Mrs. Hickel was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all of Ellinwood.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Hickel of Salina and Dennis Hickel of Great Bend; one daughter, Patricia Blair of Topeka; one sister, Sister Veronica “Jennie Rose” Considine of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, James Considine, Johnny Considine and Michael Considine; and two sisters, Mary Agnes Considine and Catherine Gottschalk.
Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday and vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday followed by Daughters of Isabella Rosary, all at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Betty I. Wilson West Janke 1931-2004
LA CROSSE — Betty I. Wilson West Janke, 72, died Jan. 21 at her home. She was born Feb. 3, 1931, at Nekoma, the daughter of Elmer “Pug” and Elva Mendenhall Wilson. She was a 1949 graduate of La Crosse High School. She married
Frank T. West April 18, 1952. He died March 29, 1975. She married
Harry W. Janke Nov. 25, 1979. He died May 17, 1995. A resident of La Crosse, coming from Ness County and rural Rush Center, she was a homemaker, farmer and worked at Rush County Register of Deeds office from 1976 to 1985.
Mrs. Janke was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Bazine and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and was a volunteer for Rush County Historical Society, Rush County Industrial Development, Walnut Valley Senior Center, Second Chance Thrift Store, Red Cross blood drives and Rush County United Fund drives.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Schaben of La Crosse and Gale West Larue of Quebec City, Canada; one brother, Floyd E. Wilson of Great Bend; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Wilson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Nekoma Union Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse and from 1 to 1:50 p.m. Saturday at the church. Loren G. Hartman 1931-2004
NEDERLAND, Texas — Loren G. Hartman, 72, died Jan. 20 at his residence. He was born Nov. 10, 1931, at Otis, the son of Abraham and Bertha Kaiser Hartman. A resident of Nederland for 50 years, coming from Otis, he was retired from Unocal as a chemist.
Hartman was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Nederland. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta, of the home; three sons, Steven Hartman of Port Neches, Texas, Paul Gomez of Nederland and David Gomez of Groves, Texas; three daughters, Lora Laird of Nederland, Julia Butler of Fort Worth, Texas, and Mary Alice Thompson of Vancouver, Wash.; one sister, Ladine Hartman of Otis; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Francis Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens cemetery in Nederland. Broussard’s in Nederland is in charge of arrangements.

Steven R. Schlotthauer 1969-2004
ELLINWOOD — Steven R. Schlotthauer, 34, died Jan. 21 at Ellinwood. He was born Nov. 23, 1969, at Ellinwood, the son of Ronald and Romona Summers Schlotthauer. He was a 1988 graduate of Ellinwood High School. He married
Deadra Spring Sept. 24, 1988, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, he was co-owner of Schlotthauer Construction and truck driver at Barton County Feeders.
Schlotthauer was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Ellinwood. He was a U.S. Navy veteran from 1988 to 1991, serving in the Gulf War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Mary Justine Schlotthauer of the home; his parents of Ellinwood; and one brother, David Schlotthauer of Ellinwood. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellinwood, with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Erma Claire Goodheart 1932-2004
Erma Claire Goodheart went to be with her Lord and Savior on Jan. 21, 2004, at the age of 71, after complications resulting from an aneurysm. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church, 3000 W. Golf Course Road, Midland, Texas. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.
Erma was born May 1, 1932, to Selmer and Rose Erdahl, in Mobridge, S.D. She married
Loy Goodheart on Aug. 15, 1980, in Lovington, N.M. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brothers Phillip and Richard Erdahl. She is survived by husband Loy B. Goodheart of Midland, brother Sydney Erdahl of Selby, S.D., daughter Kari L. Breckon of Cypress, Texas, son Brian E. Smith of Dallas, Texas, and son Craig S. Smith of Midland. Also, stepchildren Jeff Goodheart of Sycamore, Ill., Teresa Goodheart of Dallas, Chris Goodheart of Las Cruces, N.M., and Greg Goodheart of Silver City, N.M. She was the proud grandmother of 15 grandchildren.
As a homemaker, she was known for her “outstanding” love for her grandchildren, cats, cooking and everything Norwegian. “Uff Da, ” she will be greatly missed by all. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, 3000 W. Golf Course Road, Midland, Texas, 79701, in her name.
