Alice Coogan Watson 1944-2004
SANTA FE, N.M. — Alice Coogan, 59, died Jan. 28 at her home in Santa Fe following a lengthy illness. The dire diagnosis of untreatable cancer was made last May.
Born March 27, 1944, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Helen Townsley and James Alan Coogan, she grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, attended schools in Caracas, Great Bend, Ethel Walker Preparatory School in Stamford, Conn., and was graduated from Stanford University in Stanford, Calif. She married Lyall Watson, a companion for 12 years, June 21, 2003, in Santa Fe. The couple made their home in Santa Fe in recent years and maintain a home in Ireland.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one brother, Alan D. Coogan of Portland, Ore.; one niece, Alexis Coogan, living in Spain; Uncle Russell Townsley of Russell; and several cousins. Her parents James Alan and Helen Coogan, a brother James Coogan and uncle Bill Townsley preceded her in death.
After completing studies at Stanford, she was assistant director of Stanford Alumni Travel Association. In following years she organized and directed tours throughout the world and was a freelance travel director. In later years she made her home in San Francisco and South Carolina in the United States and in several countries including Colombia, Chile, South Africa and Ireland.
Mrs. Coogan was associated with Episcopal Church. Watson is a marine biologist and author of several books.
Alice requested to be cremated, to have a small family ceremony and her ashes scattered by her husband and brother in one of her favorite coral reefs.

Hazel Grossardt 1918-2004
OLATHE — Mrs. Hazel Grossardt, 85, passed away at her Olathe home on Jan. 28. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at North Cross United Methodist Church, 1321 N.E. Vivion Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Burial will be at Claflin cemetery at a later date.
She was born in Crosses, Ark., on July 1, 1918, the daughter of Ernest and Maggie Butler. She and Martin L. Grossardt were married Nov. 14, 1945, in Claflin. He preceded her in death in 1980.
Surviving are two sons, Gerald Grossardt and wife, Cheryl, of Bakersfield, Calif., and Jon Grossardt and wife, Sheri, of Winona, Minn.; two daughters, Linda Danko and husband, Mike, of Olathe and Debbie Grossardt of Kansas City, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Patrick and his wife Crystal, Steven, and Kristin Danko, and Nicholas, Anne and Andrew Grossardt, and Tracy Grauer. Also surviving are two sisters, Opal Weaver of Great Bend and Jewel Schlicht of Prairie Village. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Garland Butler.
Hazel was employed by the Hutchinson school district for a number of years as a baker, retiring in 1983. She was a member of North Cross United Methodist Church, Kansas City, Mo. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed crossword puzzles and painting.

Michael Duane Bolander 1955-2004
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Michael Duane Bolander, 48, died Jan. 28 at his home. He was born May 19, 1955, at Hominy, Okla., the son of Charles J. Bolander and Carolyn M. McMullen Crouse. He attended Ellinwood schools. A resident of Bakersfield for several years, coming from Ellinwood, he was a floor hand on a pulling unit for Kincaid Well Service and Jet Well, both of Ellinwood.
Bolander was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Ellinwood.
Survivors include his mother of Radium; one brother, John Ray Bolander of Osage, Okla.; three half-brothers, Tom Myers of Olmitz, Doug Myers of Dodge City and Dick Myers of Ellinwood; and two half-sisters, Debbie Borger of Jetmore and Carolyn Clark of Ellinwood.
The body has been cremated. The family will announce services at a later date. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to Ellinwood Public Education and Library Foundation or American Lung Association of Kansas, both in care of Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood.

Virgil Amerine 1903-2004
Virgil Amerine, 100, of Great Bend, died April 28 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 12, 1903, at Great Bend, the son of George Pearl and Minnie Woestman Amerine. He married Lucille Newkirk in 1926 at Great Bend. She died in 1981. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a farmer.
Amerine was a member of Eagle’s Lodge.
Survivors include one son, Wayne V. Amerine of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Nadine Christiansen of Hoisington; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Ballhorst; and two brothers, Ernest Amerine and Wendell Amerine.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dennis Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Wildlife Federation, in care of the funeral home.

Helen Walters 1925-2004
Helen Walters, 78, of Great Bend, died April 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 2, 1925, at Wilsey, the daughter of John E. and Vesta Brundage Read. She married Warren Walters May 9, 1958, at Great Bend. He died Feb. 8, 1980. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from Council Grove, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Great Bend.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Stevenson of Wilson, Patrick Stevenson and Larry Stevenson, both of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Johnnye Read.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Jones officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Justin Wyatt Haselhorst 2004-2004
Justin Wyatt Haselhorst, 2 hours, died April 27 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born April 27, 2004, at Wichita, the son of Eric and Christina Arasmith Haselhorst.
Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; one brother, Matthew Joseph Haselhorst of the home; one sister, Allison Rose Haselhorst of the home; his grandparents, Daniel and Beverly Haselhorst of Great Bend, David Arasmith, and Dennis and Nancy Bachman, all of Topeka; and great-grandparents, Cecelia Steffan of Great Bend, Agedia Haselhorst of Gorham, Isabelle Savelius of Topeka, and Neil and Donna Arasmith of Phillipsburg.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Great Bend, with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment Fund in memory of Justin Wyatt Haselhorst, in care of Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend.

Virginia M. Dangerfield McClanahan 1915-2004
NEWTON — Virginia M. Dangerfield McClanahan, 88, died April 26 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born July 10, 1915, at Wichita, the daughter of George Ross and Rosalie Brown Frye. They preceded her in death. Growing up, Virginia attended grade school, high school and two years at Baker University in Baldwin City. She was employed as a homemaker and was a bookkeeper for Seymore Foods and Kansas Livestock Association. She married Major L. Dangerfield at Topeka. He preceded her in death in 1960. Later she met and married Walter O. McClanahan in Topeka. He preceded her in death in 1979.
Virginia was a past member of Ives Chapel at Baldwin City. She was an accomplished organist and pianist and served in these capacities at Central Park Christian Church in Topeka, and First Christian Church and Kansas Christian Home, both of Newton.
She was a member, officer and pianist for Order of the Eastern Star No. 462 and Social Order of Beauceant Assembly No. 42, both of Topeka. When she retired to the Kansas Christian Home, she volunteered for many positions, including being their organist and pianist.
Survivors include one son, Major L. Dangerfield of Dumas, Texas; two daughters, Carol Scheuerman of Great Bend and Joyce Longsdorf of Dodge City; three granddaughters, Diana Lee of Great Bend, Laura Askins of Sacramento, Calif., and Monica Longsdorf of New York City, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren of Sacramento.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Major L. Dangerfield and Walter O. McClanahan; her father, George Ross Frye; her mother, Rosalie Frye; and two grandsons.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Mt. Hope cemetery in Topeka with the Rev. James West of Kansas Christian Home in Newton. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, all at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials are suggested to Fellowship of John at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

Wanda Louise Richards 1930-2004
GREENSBURG — Wanda Louise Richards, 74, died April 27 at Hospice House of Pratt. She was born Feb. 17, 1930, at Liberal, the daughter of John Orville and Ina Park Bookless. She was a 1948 graduate of Glen Elder High School. She married Donald Richards April 7, 1951, at Scandia. A resident of Greensburg, coming from Liberal, she was a bookkeeper at Greensburg State Bank, retiring after 20 years, and was a church secretary for a number of years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of United Methodist Women and FYI, all of Greensburg.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Douglas Richards of Kinsley, Dennis Richards of Oberlin and Mark Richards of Wichita; one daughter, Marcia Kelly of Greensburg; two brothers, John C. Bookless of Williamsburg, Va., and Lawrence R. Bookless of Wichita; one sister, Marilyn Gantz of Silver Spring, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachelle Kelly.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Gene McIntosh officiating. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in Greensburg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fleener Funeral Home in Greensburg. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church Facility Improvement Fund and South Wind Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.

Margaret Mary Cox 1912-2004
Margaret Mary Cox, 91, of Great Bend, died April 24 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 19, 1912, at Otis, the daughter of Anton J. Sr. and Emelia Haberman Schenk. She married Richard Gerald Cox May 29, 1950, at Great Bend. He died Aug. 22, 2001. A resident of Great Bend since 1942, coming from Otis, she was a homemaker, worked at Sears and was a waitress.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and St. Patrick Altar Society, both of Great Bend.
Survivors include one brother, Ben F. Schenk of Great Bend; and two sisters, Stephanie Cain and Fridolina Schenk, both of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Anton J. Schenk Jr. and Leonard J. Schenk; and two sisters, Albina Schenk and an infant sister.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann’s cemetery in Olmitz. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.
