Carrie Alma Paulsen Rowe 1906-2004
BAZINE — Carrie Alma Paulsen Rowe, 98, of Bazine, died Oct. 7 at Ness County Hospital in Ness City after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 6, 1906, on a farm near Stafford to Hans Christian and Kate Morford Paulsen. She received her early education in a rural school and graduated from Stafford High School in 1925. She continued her education at then Kansas State Agricultural College, now Kansas State University, receiving a degree in vocational home economics in 1929. Her teaching career began that fall at Bazine High School.
She met and married a local farmer, Harry Everett Rowe, June 9, 1932, at Bazine. To this union three daughters were born — twins Jane and Joan and later a third daughter, Carol.
She lived a long and active life up until the last month, living on her own, loving to cook and bake, trying out new recipes, enjoying gardening, sewing and taking part in activities at the church and Golden Years Center. She was known for her dinner and cinnamon rolls and was often asked to provide them at various functions.
Carrie was a 75-year member of Bazine United Methodist Church, teaching a Sunday school class for over 60 years. Serving in various offices in the church, she also had been a sponsor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. A faithful member, she seldom missed church services. She was a community 4-H leader for over 10 years. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s organization.
As a breast cancer survivor, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society, counseling women in Ness County who had undergone similar surgery. Many people were touched by Carrie’s love and concern.
In May 2004, when Bazine High School held its last graduation ceremonies before closing its doors, she was invited to speak as the oldest living teacher. Her presentation drew a standing ovation. Again, in August, she was honored to be a co-marshall in the parade preceding the Bazine Picnic.
She is survived by her three daughters, Jane Schwartzkopf Blount and husband Joel of Surprize, Ariz., Joan Kendrick and husband Joe of Edmond, Okla., and Carol Park and husband Dick of Overland Park; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1990; a son-in-law, Alvin Schwartzkopf in 1993; her parents; two brothers, Fred and his twin Harry; and a sister, Clara Woodden.
