Orvile N. Tuzicka 1928 - 2004
KIMBALL, Neb. – Orvile N. Tuzicka, 76 of Nebo, Ky., formerly of Kimball, Neb., died Sept. 10 at his home in Nebo. He was born March 26, 1928, at Hays, the son of Charles and Barbara Dome Tuzicka. He was raised in Kansas. Tuzicka entered the Air Force where he served until being honorably discharged as a sergeant. He married Theora M. Pierce on Aug. 8, 1948, at Las Vegas, Nev. They lived in Sterling, Colo., Wyoming and Sidney, Neb., before moving to Kimball. He worked for many years in various capacities in the oil business and later worked for Cabela’s before retiring and moving to Kentucky
Survivors include a daughter, Janice McCarty, of Yucca, Ariz.; four sons, Dennis Tuzicka, Sidney, Orvile Tuzicka Jr., Kimball, Timothy Tuzicka, Orlando, Fla., and Kevin Tuzicka, Paduka, Ky.; a brother, Floyd Tuzicka of Olmitz; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Teddy and a son, Charles Tuzicka.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball, with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating Burial will be at the Kimball cemetery Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Russell F. Meyer 1930-2004
Russell F. Meyer, 74, of Great Bend, died Sept. 11 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born May 8, 1930, at Great Bend, the son of Fred H. and Katie Marie Brown Meyer. He married Mary Ann Tate on Aug. 27, 1959, at Craig, Colo. She preceded him in death. He owned Russ’ Roofing.
Meyer served in the U.S. Army and was a member of First Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Wade Meyer and Mark Meyer, both of Florida, and Greg Meyer of Great Bend; two sisters, Violet Seder of Great Bend, and Viola Befort of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gina; three brothers; and one sister.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Charter Funerals Chapel in Great Bend with The Rev. John Grummon officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Burial will be at Great Bend City Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, in care of the funeral chapel.

Lena A. Blakeslee 1902-2004
STAFFORD — Lena A. Blakeslee, 101, died Sept. 12, 2004, at Stafford District Hospital. She was born Nov. 1, 1902, at Great Bend, the daughter of Otto and Minnie Heinze Hiss. She was a homemaker and was a Great Bend area resident for most of her life before moving to Stafford in 1999.
She was a member of the Rolling Green United EHU, First Congregational Church of Christ, and Ladies Card Club, all of Great Bend, and she enjoyed crocheting, sewing and embroidering. On Aug. 22, 1925, she married George Blakeslee Sr. at St. John. He died June 2, 1971.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Blakeslee of St. John, George Blakeslee of Great Bend and Victor Blakeslee of Stafford; two daughters, Juanita Fischer of Stafford and Helen Boyd of Topeka; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Hiss; and a sister, Louise.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Kasey Crosby presiding. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Memorials may be sent to the Stafford United Methodist Church or First Congregational Church of Christ, both in care of the chapel.

Leah Schneidewind 1913-2004
NESS CITY — Leah Schneidewind, 91, died Sept. 12 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born June 7, 1913, at Olmitz, the daughter of Peter and Mary Schneider Wittig. She married Henry Schneidewind Aug. 9, 1938, at Great Bend. He died Feb. 4, 1990. A resident of Ness County since 1936, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Harold Schneidewind of Great Bend; two daughters, Gloria Vogel of Hays and Sharon Werth of Ness City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Bazine, with the Rev. James D. Webster officiating. Burial will be at Bazine Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City and Wednesday morning at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Bazine or Trinity Lutheran Church Bell Ringing Fund in Great Bend, both in care of the funeral home.

Elda Mae Glynn 1938 - 2004
Elda Mae Glynn, 66, of Great Bend, died Sept. 9 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 4, 1938, at Great Bend, the daughter of Eric G. and Ida Bunselmeyer Fischer. A lifetime resident of Barton and Stafford counties, she was a receptionist for the Dominican Sisters.
Glynn was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Hudson, and was a volunteer for Elder Care and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
Survivors include two sons, Robert Glynn of Great Bend, and Donald Glynn of Hudson; a daughter, Brenda Johnston of Pratt; a sister, Sylvia Eddingfield of Great Bend; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Eunice Miller.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend, with the Rev. Thomas Sutter officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Dominican Sisters or Peace United Church of Christ.

Lola Maxine Smith 1940 - 2004
LARNED — Lola Maxine Smith, 64, died Sept. 9 at the Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 24, 1940, at Glen Elder, the daughter of Walter J. and Gladys M. Woddell Smith. She was a Great Bend resident since 1998, moving from Larned and previously from Glen Elder.
Smith attended the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include a brother, Lowell Smith of Locke, N.Y.; and three sisters, Rowena Smith of Wichita, Paula Smith of Larned and Rose Bateson of Topeka.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Larned cemetery in Larned, with Rev. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and until service time at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Diversified Services in care of the mortuary. Eva Kowalsky 1921 - 2004
MULVANE — Eva Kowalsky, 83, died Sept. 9 at home. She was born July 11, 1921, in Salina, the daughter of Dewitt and Anita Thomason. She attended school in Ellinwood, marrying Norman J. Kowalsky on Jan. 20, 1945. She was a resident of Attica before moving to Wichita. She operated Pork’s Welding Service with her husband until his death in 1965, working as editor of the Attica Independent newspaper for a number of years until taking a job at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where she worked until her retirement in 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Norman J. Kowalsky and Thomas Dewitt Kowalsky; a daughter, Linda Marg Kowalsky-Heiens; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. on Monday at the Lakin-Comanche cemetery in Ellinwood, with the Rev. John J. Maes officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Hospice or the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary.

Alvina E. Dietz 1911 - 2004
“I’ve gone to rest in the big blue sky and one day all my friends will join me.”
Alvina E. Dietz, 93, of Great Bend, died Sept. 8, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born May 8, 1911, in Barton County, the daughter of Fred and Mary Steinert Niedens. She married John G. Dietz on Feb. 6, 1934, in Great Bend. He died July 29, 1983. A resident of Great Bend, coming from the Hoisington area, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Dietz was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Great Bend.
Survivors include: a son, Delane J. Dietz of Great Bend; a daughter, Joyce M. Monroe of Great Bend; two brothers, Ervin Niedens of Russell, Kan., and L.D. Niedens of Garden City, Kan.; and two grandchildren, Mike Dietz of Buhler, Kan., and T.J. Dietz of Eudora, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Dietz, and three sisters, Clista Funk, Isabell Schneider and Helen Dumler.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Charter Funerals Chapel in Great Bend, with Pastor James A. Strasen officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend City Cemetery, Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 tonight, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, in care of the funeral home.

Billy J. Koelsch 1925 - 2004
ST. JOHN — Billy J. Koelsch, 79, died Sept. 8 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Stafford County, the son of William Henry and Clara E. Henning Koelsch. He married Velma D. Schneider on Sept. 7, 1944, at St. John. A farmer and stockman, he was a lifetime resident of Stafford County.
Koelsch was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 254 at St. John.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Bill Edward Koelsch and Phillip Koelsch, both of St. John; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Leatherman and Vera Koelsch.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the Rev. George Shelton officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to Billy J. Koelsch Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral chapel.
