IDA LOUISE SPENCER
SLIDELL, LA. - Ida Louise Spencer, 82, died Monday, March 19, 2001. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Ottawa. She was born Dec. 20, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio to Louis and Eva (Dziegiel) Gawrys. She grew up and graduated from high school in 1936. She entered the United States Navy after high school where she was an Aviation Machinist Mate with an Instrument Rating. She served in WWII. She married Harold Earl Spencer Jan. 5, 1946 in California. He preceded her in death April 27, 1993.
She is survived by four sons, Dennis Spencer, Slidell, La., Patrick Spencer, Costa Mesa, Calif., Michael Spencer, Mobile, Ala., and James Spencer, Tustin, Calif.; a daughter, Cathie Hasperue, Pearl River, La.; a sister, Mary Giowacki, Slidell, La., and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Novak, and two brothers, John Gawrys and Henry Gawrys. Family will receive friends 9 a.m. Friday before the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Antioch cemetery rural Ottawa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Midland Hospice and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, PO Box 14, Ottawa KS 66067.

JAMES MONROE DaVATZ
LAWRENCE - James Monroe DaVatz, 77, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at his residence. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. He was born July 15, 1923, in Iola to Christian R. and Lois Rowden DaVatz He lived in Ottawa prior to moving to Lawrence in 1951. He was employed by the Lawrence Journal World as a printer for 37 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Kansas Association and the National Association of the Deaf, the Greater Kansas City Association of the Deaf, the Olathe Club for the Deaf and the Topeka Club for the Deaf. He was also a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Lawrence. He married Dollie E. Smith on June 18, l950. She preceded him in death on February 5, 1976. He married Helen Stutheit, they later divorced. Survivors include two sons, Terry D. DaVatz and Mark I. DaVatz, Lawrence; three daughters, Judy E. Stone and Peggy Edgerton, Lawrence and Susan Nichols, Mulino, Ore., and eight grandchildren. He will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at the mortuary. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence KS 66044.

RUSSELL W. KINNISON
Russell W. Kinnison, 82, formerly of Princeton area, died Wednesday at Village Manor Care Center. Family will receive friends 10 -10:45 a.m. Saturday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, before proceeding to Princeton cemetery for graveside services at 11 a.m. His body will lie in state after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. A more complete obituary will be released later.

PAULINE M. (BALLINGER) MARTIN
OVERLAND PARK - Pauline M. (Ballinger) Martin, 85, Overland Park, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Windsor Court, Overland Park. Private family graveside serviceswill be held at the Garnett Cemetery. She was born Nov. 19, 1915, in Topeka to James J. and Maude Lee Taylor) Ballinger. She married Howard Martin on July 28, 1938, in Winfield. He preceded her in death. She lived many years in the Greeley area before moving to Overland Park. She was an accountant at the Nelson Art Gallery during the 1960s. She was a member of the Old Mission Methodist Church, PEO Chapters of Garnett and Kansas City, a volunteer in hospice, Red Cross, and a lifelong supporter of many children's organizations, including the Christian Children's Fund. Her survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Thomason, Overland Park, and Marilyn Martin Lucht, Winthrop, Maine; a brother James Stanley Ballinger, West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Orienne Ballinger Maloney, LaJolla, Calif., and Lucille Ballinger Brandt, and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a sister, Lois Brown. Memorial contributions may be made to the the Christian Children's Fund, PO Box 26507, Richmond VA 23261-6507, or left in care of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett.

BONITA 'CORKY' GAILE LYONS
OSAWATOMIE - Bonita "Corky" Gaile Lyons, 69, Osawatomie, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at her home. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Osawatomie cemetery under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home. She was born Jan. 29, 1932, in Osawatomie to Ted and Rose Ethel Caywood Barber. She attended Osawatomie schools. She married John Leander Lyons, March 7, 1957, at Bay St. Louis, Miss. She lived in Kansas City, Mo. and worked in the Kansas City area hospitals in housekeeping. She moved to Owawatomie with her husband in 1988. She is survived by her husband, and a sister, Billie Lewis, Overland Park. She is preceded in death by a half brother, John W. Bumgarner, Jr., and three half sisters, Grace Shively, Hazel Spears, and Maxine Sampson.

MARJORIE KATE McCUNE
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Marjorie Kate McCune, 96, formerly of Ottawa, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Primrose Place Care Center, Springfield, Mo. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Springfield. She was born June 18, 1904, in Peculiar, Mo., to David Greenlee and Lura (Moore) Shackelford. She earned her teaching degree form Central Missouri State Teachers College, Warrensburg, Mo. She taught school for several years in Ottawa. She married Jesse Goodin McCune June 12, 1938, in Ottawa. He died in 1993. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1944 and taught school in the Center School District, Kansas City, until she retired in 1965. She moved to Nixa, Mo., and later Springfield after her husband's retirement. She was a member of the Paseo and Colonial Presbyterian Churches, Kansas City, and Covenant Presbyterian Church, Springfield. She is survived by a son, Paul McCune, and a grandson. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church or The Kitchen, Springfield. Greenlawn Battlefield South Funeral Home, 441 W. Battlefield, Springfield, is in charge.

ANGEL RENE McCURRY
PRINCETON - Angel Rene McCurry, was stillborn Friday, March 23, 2001, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Private family graveside service will be held at the Princeton Cemetery. She was the daughter of Lance an Shani (Martinez) McCurry, Princeton. Grandparents are Tommy and Karen Martinez, Princeton; and Steve and Judy McCurry, Waverly. Great-grandparents are Bennie and Jean Stinson, Ottawa; James and Beulah McCurry of Waverly, and Lawrence and Tressa Platt of Virgil; several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive. Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LOIS L. McINTOSH
TAYLOR, Ariz. - Lois L. McIntosh, 97, formerly Ottawa, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Webb's Residential Home Care, Snowflake, Ariz. Private funeral services are pending with Silver Creek Chapel Mortuary, Taylor. She was born July 30, 1903, in Sheridan, Mo. She is survived by two sons, Earl Rollo, Fillmore, Calif. and Marvin Rollo, Overgaard, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

GOLDEN W. NELSON
POMONA - Golden W. Nelson, 82, Pomona, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Johnson County Nursing Center, Olathe. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Pomona United Methodist Church with Rev. Marti McDougal officiating. She was born Feb. 21, 1919, at Tonkawa, Okla. to Ralph W. and Mildred (Purgett) Brown. She graduated from the Tonkawa High School in 1936. She married L.E. "Jack" Nelson at Burlington on Dec. 24, 1937. He survives. She lived on the family farm since moving to Pomona in 1937. She was a lifelong homemaker. She was a member of the Pomona United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Chapter #305 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Stitch 'N Chatter Club and the Crafts Club, all of Pomona. She is survived by two sons, Ralph Nelson, Olathe, and Bernard Nelson, Mission; a daughter, Joyce D. Phillippi, Mission; two brothers, David Brown, Ottawa, and Newton Brown, Lompoc, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Hall, Blackwell, Okla., and Maxine Petty, Santa Maria, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Mealman, Ottawa, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Florabelle Decker. Her body will lie in state 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, where family will meet with friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice or Pomona United Methodist Church.

ROBERT 'BOB' MOOK
Carbondale - Robert "Bob" Mook, 72, Carbondale, died Sunday April 8, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Overbrook United Methodist Church. He was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Crawford County, Wis., to Fred and Bessie (Huffman) Mook. He graduated from Lancaster, Wis., High School in 1948. He served in the United States Air Force 1950 to 1953. He married Donna Arlene Warren on June 8, 1957, in Topeka. She survives. He retired from Fleming Foods of Topeka as a warehouseman. He is also survived by a son, Gary Mook, Evansville, Ind.; a daughter, Darla Garrett, Auburn; four brothers, Laurel Mook, Woodman, Wis., Roland Mook, Fennimore, Wis., Raymond Mook, La Crosse, Wis., and Lawrence Mook, Milan, Ill.; three sisters, Belva Butler, Boscobel, Wis., Lola Richardson, Cassville, Wis., and Mildred Cooper, Lancaster, Wis., and two grandchildren. His body will lie in state 3-8 p.m. Wednesday a the Greenwood-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Overbrook. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Auburn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carbondale Fire Department.

LORENA LANI MORTENSON
PAOLA - Lorena Lani Mortenson, 61, Paola, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at the Olathe Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wilson & Son Funeral Home, Paola. She was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Ottawa to A.C. "Mort" and Iwalani Gault Mortenson. She grew up in Paola, graduating from Paola High School in 1958. She attended Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, receiving a degree in English. In 1980. she received a master's degree in social work administration from Kansas University. She lived in Baguio, Philippines, and taught at the Brent School for three years. She was working for the Paola Housing Authority as executive director, where she had been for four years. She belonged to the Amazing Grace Chorus, Eighth Notes Chorus, Osawatomie Methodist Church, Methodist choir, United Methodist Women's Group, Paola High School Alumni, Pleasant Hour Club, Miami County Historical Society and the Kansas University Alumni Association. Survivors include her mother; a brother, Robert S. Mortenson, Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Joyce Smith, Leawood, and Marna Jennings, Topeka, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Richmond Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Osawatomie Methodist Church, Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund in care of Williams Fund at K.U., or the Paola High School Endowment Fund #368, in care of Wilson & Son Funeral Home, 305 North Pearl St., Paola KS 66071.

RITA Y. POWERS
KINGMAN - Rita Y. Powers, 70, died Sunday March 18, 2001. Graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton. She was born Sept. 7, 1930 in Wichita to Clarence and Melrose (Fawl) Gould. Survivors include her husband Joseph of the home; two sons, Michael W. Powers, Newton, and Daniel J. Powers, of the home; two daughters, Teresa Y. Geis, Derby, and Patricia J. Strunk, Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Billy Joe Fawl, Ottawa; a sister, Judith A. Reynolds, Ottawa, and six grandchildren. A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 W. Highway 54, Wichita, KS, 67209, is in charge of arrangements.
