Rev. John W. DeVasher
Reverend John W. DeVasher, 97, retired Assembly Of God minister, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Services Friday, October 3, 2003, 1:00 P.M. at the Maranatha Worship Center, 888 South Webb, Wichita, Kansas.
Rev. DeVasher was born on a farm near Warrensburg, MO on Jan 13, 1906. He lived in Parson, KS, Kansas City and Los Angeles, CA before establishing permanent Residence in Wichita in 1949.
While living in Los Angeles he attended and graduated from Bible School in 1940. After moving to Wichita he founded the South Seneca Assembly of God Church and the first service was in June 1955. After retiring as a full pastor he served as Visitation pastor at the First Assembly of God now known as Maranatha Worship Center. In 1998, he received special recognition for 50 years of dedicated ministry with the Assemblies of God organization.
Other than his church work, he enjoyed his family, traveling, gardening and working on automobiles.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clovia, granddaughter, Deena Ortiz and grandson, Larry Stover.
He is survived by his wife, Cleda; his daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Karl Krausse of Wichita: two step-daughters and son-in-laws, Peggy and Merle Shoemaker of Derby, KS and Sharon and Dick Jones of Wichita, two step-sons and daughters-in-law, El and Jeanne Giltner of Ft. Scott, KS, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Beery was born in Peabody, Kansas on December 25, 1927 to parents, Floyd and Virl Draper. Survivors: husband, Eston E. Ott, Alberta I.
Ott, Alberta I., 88, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003 in Wichita. Services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, at Reformation Lutheran Church. Alberta was born in Greenwood County, KS on March 22, 1915. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1934. She and her husband owned and operated Ott’s Café in Eureka for many years. She provided child care for many Wichita children at East Heights United Methodist Church Mom’s Day Out and at other organizations. Alberta was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Shirley V. Ott, parents, three brothers and four sisters. Alberta is survived by sons, Melvin D. Ott (Sharon), Ronald E. Ott (Carol) and Gary L. Ott (Anita), all of Wichita; grandchildren, David N. Ott (Angela) of Wichita, Lisa G. Greenstreet (Daryl) of Mission, KS, Barbara J Borg (Steve) of Andover, Janice E. Steffen (Craig) of Lenexa, KS, Julia A. Regier (Nathan) of Newton, KS, Christine I. Murcek (Richard) of Omaha, NE and Tracey L. Bauer (Matthew) of Wichita; twelve great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: husband, John; son, John Jr. (Jack); sisters, Helen Wing and Dorothy Koutsky; brother, Father Henry Grupa. Survivors: son, Stephen (Kathryn) Palubicki of Wichita; brothers, Stanley (Lorraine) Grupa of Minneapolis, MN, Fritz Grupa of Hastings, MN; grandson, Matthew (Michelle) Palubicki of Shawnee, KS; great-grandson, Henry Palubicki; many nieces and nephews. DuPont, Agnes H.
DuPont, Agnes H., 82, retired Southwestern Bell employee, died Monday, October 13, 2003. Service 10:00 A.M., Saturday, Downing & Lahey Mortuary East. Agnes was born March 27, 1921 in Charleroi, PA. She traveled to many places in the world for 24 years with her husband, Charles while he was in the military. During the military travels, she participated as a volunteer Gray Lady and Dental assistant. Agnes & Charles were married on December 29, 1940 and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last December. Agnes & Charles were very close and shared equally the many family tasks. Survivors: husband, Charles; daughters, Vickie Hendricks of Las Vegas, NV, Joann Caley (Dalton) of Goddard, KS; granddaughters, Terry Frank of Las Vegas, NV, Sherry Brady of Salina, KS and Rachelle Caley of Nebraska; six great-grandchildren. Survivors: husband, Howard; son, Kent Babcock (Kathie) of La Grange, TX; brother, Bill Kincaid; sisters, Nell Niles, Juanita Chastain, Bobbye Byrnes, Carolyn Brewer and Marion Kincaid; grandchildren, Michael Babcock and Emily Martin. Sion, R. Rae
Sion, R. Rae, 87, retired business owner, died Thursday, October 16, 2003. Trisagion and service 7:00 P.M., Sunday, St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral. Committal 11:00 A.M., Monday, Mission Chapel Mausoleum. Preceded in death by husband, Michael Elias Sion.
Mrs. Sion was born in Wichita and lived here all of her life with the exception of the years 1947 to 1953, when she, her husband and children resided in Atlantic City, New Jersey, prior to moving back to Wichita.
She traveled from coast to coast several times a year, visiting her children and attending church conventions and social events. Her passion for travel also included 2 separate visits to the Holy Land and trips to Europe. She supported a number of charities and never hesitated to give of herself to those in need. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening and reading. Her life revolved around her church, her children and her grandchildren. As a widow, she started her own business, Sion Retail Liquor, first at one location and then another.
Survivors: son, Dr. Edward Michael Sion of Philadelphia, PA; daughters, Linda Sion Taylor of San Diego, CA and Janet Sion Hammond of Denver, CO; brothers, Richard and William Ayesh, both of Wichita; grandchildren, Michael Edward and Melanie Kay Sion, both of Washington D.C., Andrew Gilbert Hammond of Denver, CO and Ainsley Sion Taylor of San Diego, CA. Edgerton, Hugh Simon
Edgerton, Hugh Simon, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.
Born Jan. 4, 1916 in Wichita, he attended KU Graduate School, was a graduate of William Jewell College and New York University School of Retailing and served as a 1st Lt. in the Army during World War II. He was the owner and operator of House of Carpet in Wichita for many years before retiring in 1998. Hugh was a former resident of Eastborough and was Eastborough Chief of Police.
Hugh was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Wichita, a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Albert Pike Masonic Lodge, Wichita Consistory as a 33rd Degree Mason, the Midian Shrine and The Royal Order of Jesters. Hugh was active in Friends of McConnell and the Wichita Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.
Every Christmas for over 40 years he brought joy to children in his portrayal of Santa Claus for the Institute of Logopedics, Wichita Children’s Home, Wichita Country Club and Crestview Country Club as well as his friends and family.
Survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Anne Bono, Sherman, TX, Carolyn Nickel, Wichita; stepson, Wayne Snyder, Chicago, IL; stepdaughter, Kimberly Osborn, Cotter, AR; sister, Mary Ann Ranney, Wichita; 6 granddaughters; 4 grandsons; 1 great-granddaughter; a niece and nephews.
Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Downing and Lahey Mortuary East. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Wichita. A memorial has been established in his name at First Presbyterian Church of Wichita. Downing & Lahey Mortuary East.
