J.R. 'DUKE' CHENEY
Memorial services for J.R. "Duke" Cheney, 90, who died Dec. 31, 2001, at Kingwood, Texas, will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Henry A. Roberts Jr. and Rev. Kent Mathews officiating. He was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Baldwin to W.R. and Ora Pearl (Bryant) Cheney. He graduated from Dover High School in 1928, and the University of Kansas, majoring in business, and in 1934 from the law school at Washburn University, Topeka. He married Lucy Alice Hodgson in Little River on Dec. 25, 1938. She survives. He moved to Ottawa in the 1930s. He lived in Ottawa until moving to Kingwood, Texas in April 2000. He practiced law in Ottawa from 1934 to 1936, worked in the grocery business with his father from 1936 to 1964, he sold investment securities and life insurance from 1964 to 1976, and from 1976 to retirement in 1992, he served as municipal judge, all in Ottawa. He served with the U.S. Navy from November 1942 to December 1945 as Supply Officer in Charge for the Naval Air Station in Trenton, N.J. He was an active member and elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ottawa; served as mayor of Ottawa from 1947 to 1950; Kansas State Highway Commissioner from 1955 to 1957: finance commissioner of Ottawa from 1963 to 1964; and director of the Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Commission from 1964 to 1967. He also served as president or director of various organizations including Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, Kansas State Chamber of commerce, Ottawa Industrial Development Corporation, and Ottawa Rotary Club. He received such honors as Ottawa University Distinguished Service Award in 1960 and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award in 1972. Family visitation will follow services at the church. His body was cremated. Burial will be at Highland cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary.

JOSEPH MARSHALL CHURCH
GARNETT - Joseph Marshall Church, 44, formerly of Colony, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., after a two-week fight with pneumonia. A celebration of life will be held at the Lone Elm Community Center in Lone Elm, 10 a.m. Monday. He was born on July 2, 1956 at Garnett to Lilia and Dale Church of Colony. He attended grade school at Lone Elm and graduated from Crest High School, Colony, May of 1974. He attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Throughout his life, he lived in Kansas, Texas, Charlotte, N.C., and Savannah, Ga. During much of his adult life, he worked as a service manager for Chrysler dealerships in Charlotte and Savannah. At the time of his death, he was employed by Southern Motors of Savannah. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his parents of Colony; his dear friend Kenny Power, Savannah; brothers Robert Church, Xenia; Charles Church, Newport Beach, Calif.; Ken Church, Lansing, and Mike Church, Carlyle; a sister, Mary Hunt, Charlotte, N.C.; five nieces; seven nephews; five greatnephews, and one great niece. Interment will be at Lone Elm cemetery followed by a time of food and fellowship for family and friends at the Lone Elm Community Center. Memorial contributions may be given to the Marshall Church Scholarship fund for Crest Senior High School and may be sent to The State Bank of Colony, Colony, KS 66015. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, is handling the local arrangements.

HELEN NADINE BROWN
OLATHE - Helen Nadine Brown, 85, Olathe, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Royal Terrace Nursing Home, Olathe. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Wellsville Cemetery. She was born Feb. 14, 1916, in Clinton, Mo., to Estel and Hattie (Gutherall) Wilson. She married Murl Brown in April 1947. He died in 1984. She had lived in the Olathe area since 1977 and was a homemaker all her life. She was a member of the Quarrells Baptist Church, Clinton, Mo. She is survived by two daughters, Shelly Douglas, Wellsville, and Debbie Brown, Olathe; three brothers, Norman Wilson, Overland Park, Paul and David Wilson, both of Clinton, Mo.; three stepbrothers, Pat Camden, Jimmy John Camden and Michael Camden, all of Clinton; a sister, Ada June Hammond, Carthage, Mo.; stepsister Mary Jane Renfro, Raymore, Mo.; and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, and an infant grandson who died in 1988. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.

RONALD N. BARTON
Ronald N. Barton, 25, Ottawa, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his home. Graveside services will be10:30 a.m. Friday at Hope Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at Franklin County Mental Health New Beginnings Center. Rev. Kenneth Maldonado will officiate. He was born Feb. 24, 1976, in Worcester, Mass., to Ronald R. and Rita DeAnna (Evans) Barton. He has lived in Ottawa the past eight years, moving here from Worcester. He attended schools in Massachusetts. He is survived by his father, Vero Beach, Fla.; mother, Ottawa; brother Garrett Ray Barton, Marianna, Fla.; sister Lisa Michelle Barton-Piette, Marlborough, Ma.; maternal grandmother, Delores Andrews, Ottawa, and paternal grandmother, June Barton, Worcester. He was preceded in death by four grandparents. His body will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9 a.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald N. Barton Memorial Fund in care of Dengel & Son.

CORA ANN ADAMSON
Cora Ann Adamson, 62, Ottawa, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Village Manor Care Center, Ottawa. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Highland Cemetery. She was born Jan. 28, 1939, in Creston, Iowa, to John and Mimi (Chandler) Shimer and graduated from Creston High School in 1957. She married Marvin Adamson Feb. 21, 1957, in Creston. He survives. After her marriage. she lived in Des Moines, Iowa. and modeled women's clothing for the Yonkers Clothing Company before moving to Ottawa in 1966. She worked as a waitress in the North American Hotel in Ottawa and later Ransom Memorial Hospital for over 12 years. Survivors also include two sons, Marvin Adamson, Jr. and Joe Adamson, Ottawa; two daughters, Janet Visitacion-Gamez, Ottawa, and Sandra Leabo, Quenemo; five brothers, Virgil Shimer, Jack Shimer and Dell Shimer, all of Creston, Albert Shimmer, Perry, Iowa, and Johnny Grover Shimer, Lockton, Iowa; two sisters, Kay Karen Candam, Lennox, Iowa, and Sandra Bolinger, Creston; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death is a sister, Mini Kathryn Shimmer. Family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home before going to the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to New Beginnings.

ANNA GERTRUDE RICE
WELLSVILLE - Anna Gertrude Rice, 81, Wellsville, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilson and Son Funeral Home, Wellsville. She was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Wellsville to Vincent and Cora (Rhoades) Trusheim. She grew up in the Wellsville area and attended the Black Jack Rural grade school and then Wellsville High School. She married Clifford Rice on July 31, 1937. He died Aug. 23, 1975. She owned and operated a small dog kennel near her home for 30 years. She is survived by two sons, Clifford J. Rice, and Jerry V. Rice, both of Wellsville; a daughter, Cora Rice, Wellsville; 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a brother, J.C. Trusheim. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Wellsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice.

ALLISON DARROW ADAMS
TOPEKA - Allison Darrow Adams, 69, Topeka, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Darlington, S.C. Funeral services were Monday at Memorial Park Cemeter, Topeka. He was born July 1, 1931, to Ralph Leroy and Bertha Elizabeth (Herrill) Adams in Garnett. He was a truck driver for Contech Steel, retiring in 1992. He also worked after retirement at K-Mart North and Atlantic Group. He married Barbara J. Hazen Oct. 21, 1950, in Ottawa. She survives. He is survived by his mother, Bertha E. Adams; three sons, Dale W. Adams, Phoenix, Michael A. Adams, Paxico, and Kelly R. Adams, Topeka; a sister, Freida Heistand, Shawnee Mission; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a brother Ralph Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allison D. Adams Memorial Fund in care of Jayhawk Area Council, Boy Scouts, of America, 1020 SE Monroe, PO Box 851, Topeka KS 66601-0851. Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka, is in charge.

DAVID W. ALLEN
BURLINGTON - David W. Allen, 56, died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Coffey County Hospital, Burlington. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Burlington. He was born Jan. 18, 1945 in Ottawa to Arnold D. "Barnie" and Donna A. Lindsey Allen. He grew up in Ottawa, graduating from Ottawa High School in 1963. He attended the University of Kansas and Ottawa University until joining the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1968. He moved to Burlington and served as a Trooper for 11 years. In 1979 he opened the Sears Store in Burlington and operated it until 1989 when he started Allen Electric. In 1992 he started selling real estate and insurance and became a partner in the Rock Creek Realty and Insurance Company, Burlington. He married Karen K. Wilson on Aug. 11, 1965 at Ottawa. She survives, of the home. He was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church, Burlington Lions Club. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout while in Ottawa, and served on and was past-president of the Burlington Board of Education. Survivors include: a son, Benjamin Allen, Overland Park; a daughter, Kelly Ledom, Burlington, and two grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents, and a sister, Nancy Lou A. Allen, on June, 1967. Family will meet with friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at the Jones Funeral Home, Burlington. Interment will be at the Graceland Cemetery, Burlington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Burlington United Methodist Church.

LEWIS D. COLE
Lewis D. Cole, 85, died Sunday September 3, 2000, at his residence. He was cremated and memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Dengel and Son Mortuary, with Rev. Francis Stockton, Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. He was born May 12, 1915 in Kansas City, Kan. to Thomas and Lucy (Roach) Cole. He had lived in Ottawa since 1971 when he moved from Wellsville where he had lived for ten years. He previously resided in many Kansas locations including Wellington and Topeka. He was employed as an Engineer Consultant for Archer-Daniels-Mills, Kansas City, Mo. from early 1940's to 1961; Mid-Continent Grain, Kansas City, Mo., from 1961 to the late 1960's; Farmland Industries, Ottawa Coop during the 1970's; owned and operated Cole's Industrial and Farm Maintenance, a steel fabrication and repair shop in Wellsville during the 1960's and 1970's and for several years by the Corp of Engineers at Lake Pomona, serving many seasons as a gatekeeper and greeter. He was united in marriage May 3, 1950 to Faye Cain at Woodard, Okla. She survives of the home. He is survived by one son, Les Cole, Ottawa; five daughters, Alice Christianson, Leawood, Rose Mary Wickersham, Meriden, Glenna Bowman, Louisburg, Janice Hendricks, Topeka and Joyce Ryan of Kansas City; two brothers, Lee Cole of Olathe, and Bill Cole, Little Rock, Ark.; a sister Mary Bowles, Plainview, Texas; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Randall Cole, Donald Cole and John Cole, and a grandson, Bret Wickersham.

HELEN SARAH KENNEDY
LANE - Helen Sarah Kennedy, 89, died Saturday September 2, 2000 at the Life Care Center in Osawatomie. Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, Osawatomie. She was born December 4, 1910 in Rantoul to John Orson and Vida Roscoe Cooley DeVore and attended Chestnut Grove Country School, south of Rantoul. She lived in the Lane area all of her life. She worked during the 1980's as a caregiver and she also delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered delivering commodities to the elderly. She married Dean Kennedy January 2, 1929, and lived in rural Lane. He preceded her in death in 1988. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lane, The Evelena Chapter #435 of the Order of Eastern Star of Lane, and the Rebekah Lodge of Lane and a 4-H Project Leader for many years. She is survived by one son, Wilbur Kennedy of Parker; two daughters, Betty L. Williams, Stillwell and Ramona Bench of Hermet, Calif.; two brothers, John DeVore, Osawatomie and Frank DeVore of Wakarusa; one sister, Altha Johnson of Overland Park; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren, and 13 great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, a granddaughter, and three great-granddaughters. She will lie in state after 1 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Lane Cemetery, Lane. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Lane.

CAROL SUE PROTHE
PAOLA - Carol Sue Prothe, 58, Paola, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000 at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Paola, with burial to follow at the Paola Cemetery. She was born June 9, 1942, in Topeka, to Albert and Mary (Tucker) Wilson. She is survived by her husband, Phil of the home; daughter, Jennifer Troy Fitzgerald of Raytown, Mo.; brother Steve of Wichita. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson and Son Funeral Home, Paola. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church Endowment Assoc. or Olathe Hospice in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl, Paola, KS 66071.

WILMA J. GARBER
QUENEMO - Wilma J. Garber, 64, Quenemo, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Arrangements will be announced by Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home. She was born Nov. 20, 1936, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Andrew Jackson and Fay E. (Lowell) Denman. She grew up and attended school in Grand Junction. She married Harold Garber on May 31, 1953. He died March 7, 1991. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Garber, Quenemo, and David Garber of Iola; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death is one brother, Ivan Denman. Burial will be at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima, Wash.
