Eugene Myers
HOWARD - Eugene Taylor Myers, 74, longtime resident of Howard, died Oct. 19, 1997, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Dale Cornett will officiate. Cremation will take place after the service, and burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Altoona Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Howard Senior Center. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Myers was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Savannah, Mo., to Selby Theodore and Ethel Grace (Adkins) Myers. He was raised and educated in the Savannah community.
On May 24, 1946, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 865th Automatic Weapons Battalion. After his discharge in 1947, he lived in Artesia, Calif., befor moving to Kansas.
On July 19, 1957, he married Ellen Mae Brewer in Wichita. They lived in Wichita, El Dorado and Winfield before moving to Howard in June 1976.
Myers was employed as a conservation technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement in the mid-1980s.
Myers was a past president of the Howard Lions Club and had served as secretary of the Elks Lodge in Winfield. He was past commander of American Legion Carter-Rader Post 149 in Howard and was currently commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Sedan. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Howard.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Myers, Howard; two daughters, Melissa Anderson, Winfield, and Earlene Smith, Montclair, Va.; four brothers, James Myers, Kansas City, Mo., Robert Myers, Savannah, Mo., and Corliss Myers and Huston Myers, both of St. Joseph, Mo.; six sisters, Fern Peterson, Vancouver, Wash., Dorris Ueligger and Joyce Delk, both of Savannah, Mo., Loleta Beattie, Wichita, Betty Blunk, San Gabriel, Calif., and Iola Cannedy, Mountain Home, Ark.; and four grandchildren.
Craig Allison
WICHITA - Craig Steven Allison, 27, of Wichita, died Oct. 19, 1997, near Dexter.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maple City Community Church. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City is in charge of arrangements.
Allison was born Sept. 28, 1970, in Wichita, to Chester S. and Sharon J. (Howard) Allison. He was raised and educated in Wichita where he attended Wichita West High School.
He served in the Army Reserves for one year.
On May 18, 1993, he married Chandra McGann in Wichita where they made their home.
Allison worked for Boeing as a sheet metal assembler. He was a member of Local 834, District 70 AFL-CIO, and the WDA Dart Association.
Survivors include his wife, Chandra Allison, Wichita; three daughters, Ashley, Kayla and Autumn Allison; his father, Chester Allison, Kenosha, Wis.; his mother, Sharon Allison, and a sister, Kimberly Allison, both of Wichita; his grandparents, Nona Howard, Arkansas City, and Chester and Martha Allison, Wichita; and his great-grandmother, Grace Walker, Fredonia.
Bernice Evans
WAUNETA - Services for Bernice "Polly" Evans were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 21, 1997, in the Wauneta United Methodist Church. Daniel Miller officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery
in Sedan.
Joe Leonard was organist, and Lyman Wheeler sang "Beautiful Isle" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Teddie Helphingstine, Jim Looman, Jim McMahan, Cecil Green, Les Blenden and Johnny White.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Alzheimer's and Similar Diseases Association.

Eilt Eilts
Services for Eilt Edward Eilts, 74, who died Oct. 14, 1997, in Jacksonville, Fla., were held at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated. Inurnment was in Highland Cemetery.
Interpreters were Julie Theel and Jodine Trout.
Music selections were "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."
A memorial has been established with Calvin and Gene's Scholarship Fund.
Mary Albright
STILLWATER, Okla. - Mary Lucas Bryant, 95, of Stillwater, formerly of Winfield and Wichita, died Oct. 21, 1997, at Stillwater Medical Center.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Oct. 23 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Wichita. Burial was at 1:30 p.m. in Highland Cemetery
at Winfield. Strode Funeral Home of Stillwater was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Penrose Albright Scholarship Fund at Plymouth Congregational Church, 202 N. Clifton, Wichita, KS 67208.
Albright was born March 23, 1902, in Arkansas City, to William and Katherine (Johnson) Lucas. They lived on an Oklahoma farm two miles south of the Kansas border. She attended a rural one-room school through eighth grade and Arkansas City High School.
After graduation she went to work for the Albright Title and Trust Co. in Newkirk, Okla. There she met Penrose S. "Parney" Albright whom she married on April 27, 1924. They moved from Newkirk to Winfield, where he taught at Southwestern College. For a few years the family lived in Winfield and Madison, Wis., while he earned his doctorate.
In 1943 they moved to Wichita where he became head of the physics department at Wichita State University. She was active with University Dames and the Plymouth Congregational Church women's group. She was also an active member of an investment club.
Because of failing eyesight, she moved to Stillwater in 1993 to live with her son.
Survivors include three sons, Penrose Lucas Albright, McLean, Va., James Curtice Albright, Stillwater, and John Grover Albright, Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Otis Cable
CEDAR VALE - Services for Otis S. Cable were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 22, 1997, at Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Vern Wilkinson officiated. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Shirley Brown was the organist.
Honorary casket bearers were Bill House, Carl Steward, Floyd Thompson, Clarence Merz, Dale Seaman and Gene Noah.
Casket bearers were Cable's grandsons, David Cable, Mike Merz, Mike Biddle, Ryan Biddle and Evan Zorn.
Memorials have been established with the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church and Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.

Gardner Chase
UDALL - Gardner E. Chase, 81, of Udall, died Oct. 22, 1997, at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery
in Winfield.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until the service Saturday.
Chase was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Winfield, to Ernest E. and Helen (Parsons) Chase. Raised and educated in Winfield, he graduated from Winfield High School in 1934.
Chase worked in a local furniture store and later began his career in the oil field industry. He was employed in bowling lanes in Arkansas City, Winfield, Derby and Wichita for many years.
During the 1970s, he worked in the oil industry in Indonesia and resided in Singapore for a number of years. He married Theresa Fernandez on Nov. 16, 1978, in Singapore. They moved to the United States in 1979, and he retired as an oilfield tool pusher in 1984.
Chase attended the Baptist Church and was affiliated with a bass fishing club.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Chase, Udall; three sons, Arthur Chase, Macon, Ga., Roger Chase, Arkansas City, and Steve Chase, Wichita; a daughter, Lana Chase, Winfield; a sister, Vivian, Burns, Ore.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ona Gere
Services for Ona Mae Gere, 72, who died Oct. 20, 1997, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 23 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Mike Nolan officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.
Special music selections were "Ave Maria" and "When the Saints Go Marching In."
Casket bearers were Quinton Anderson, Larry Golightly and Joseph , Thomas, Thomas James and Tim Toon.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Research Association.
Sarah Jo Sympson
Sarah Jo Sympson, 78, of 1742 E. Seventh, Winfield, died April 3, 1998, at Via Christi-St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett will officiate. Following cremation, private family burial services will be held at a later date in Tisdale Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or Miles Funeral Service.
Sympson was born March 24, 1920, in Meno, Okla., to Henry Ray and Maggie May (Swarz) Bergdall. When she was a young girl, the family moved to a farm in the Tisdale area. She received her early education in Victor Point School, attended Burden High School for two years and graduated from Winfield High School in 1937.
For two years, she attended Southwestern College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools in the Wilmot and Floral areas for several years.
On May 5, 1946, she married William B. Sympson at the Tisdale United Methodist Church. They made their first home in the Atlanta community but lived in Winfield through most of their marriage.
She worked with Beech Aircraft during World War II and later served as bookkeeper for the State Bank in Winfield for several years. She was also employed in the printing department at Southwestern College for many years until her retirement in the late 1970s.
A longtime member of Tisdale United Methodist Church, she and her husband sponsored the Methodist Youth Fellowship for many years. She was also an active member of the Winfield Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Sympson, Winfield; her brother, William H. Bergdall, Overland Park; and two sisters, Phyllis Sympson, Winfield, and Nancy J. Bowman, Liberal.
Edgar Newland
WICHITA - Edgar J. Newland, 82, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died April 2, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at DevVorss-Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary in Wichita. The Rev. Scott Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 1820 Douglass, Wichita, KS 67214-4255.
Newland was born in Winfield to George Franklin and Mertle (Kniseley) Newland on Nov. 5, 1915. He grew up in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.
He married Mary E. "Betty" Matthews.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Newland, Wichita, and his sister, Edythe Banzet, Parsons.
