Hedda Abraham

Hedda Marie Abraham, 70, a resident of Focus Developmental Center in Winfield, died April 7, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Old Mission Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in Wichita.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with St. George Orthodox Christian Church in Wichita. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Abraham was born Jan. 24, 1928, at Ponca City, Okla., to Joseph and Katherine (Taylor) Abraham. She moved to Wichita with her parents in 1930 and returned to Ponca City in 1945. They moved to Wichita in 1958, and she had been a resident of Focus since 1979.

She was a member of St. George Orthodox Christian Church.

Survivors include a brother, N.J. Abraham, and a sister, Dode Jabara, both of Wichita; and eight nieces and nephews.

Danny Kennedy

HARDY, Ark. - Danny R. Kennedy Jr., 25, of Hardy, son of Danny R. and Tammy Kennedy of Winfield, died April 3, 1998, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident March 31.

Services were held April 5 in Trumann, Ark. Burial was in Pine Log Cemetery at Brookland, Ark.

Honorary casket bearers were Curtis Cody and Wesley Andrews. Casket bearers were Jonesboro, Ark., police officers.

A memorial has been established by Boeing employees for 911 dispatchers and rescue squads. Donations can be sent in care of Danny Kennedy, Route 2, Box 202, Winfield, KS 67156.

Danny Kennedy Jr. was born June 4, 1972, in Wichita, to Danny and Virginia Kennedy. He graduated from Augusta High School in 1991.

Four years ago he moved to Hardy, where he worked at the 911 center in Jonesboro as a dispatcher and as a disk jockey for K-Kuntry Radio 95 in Thayer, Mo.

He was of the Full Gospel faith.

Survivors include his parents, Danny R. and Tammy Kennedy, Winfield, and Virginia Owens, Hardy, Ark.; his stepparents, Cheryl Graham, Augusta, and Dean Owens, Hardy, Ark.; a brother, Garret Kennedy, Winfield; four sisters, Cheyla Cabrales, Jacey Kennedy and Stevi Kennedy, all of Augusta, and Stacy Kennedy, Winfield; and his grandparents, Opie and Faye Rogers, Trumann, Ark., and Louella Foxx, Wichita.

John Brettell

Retired U.S. Air Force Major John Edward Brettell, 42, of 3404 Lake Shore Drive, Winfield, died April 7, 1998, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be held later in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

A memorial has been established with the American Brain Tumor Association. Contributions can be made through the church or Miles Funeral Service.

Brettell was born Feb. 29, 1956, in New Castle, Pa., to John Allan and Patricia Anne (Taylor) Brettell. The son of a diplomat, he lived in Brazil as a child. In 1966 the family settled in Manhattan. He was active in Boy Scouts, debate and drama and graduated from Manhattan High School in 1974.

He received a bachelor's degree in history and pre-law from Kansas State University in 1978 and his Kansas teaching certificate in 1979.

Brettell attended Officer Training School for the U.S. Air Force in 1979 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. In his first assignment, he served as executive officer to an A-10 fighter squadron in England.

On June 7, 1980, he married Debora Ann Zimmerman of Wellington, and they made their home in Kettleborough, England. In 1982 he was reassigned as the OTS recruiter in Arlington, Texas. For three years, he was the top OTS recruiter in the nation.

Brettell then became a special agent for the secretary of the Air Force Inspector General's Office. He was assigned as the first officer at McClellan Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif., and in 1986 was named commander of the Office of Special Investigations detachment at England Air Force Base, Alexandria, La.

In 1988 he was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Office of Special Investigations in Washington, D.C., as deputy director of long range planning. His last assignment was to the Pentagon as director of the secretary of the Air Force Inspector General's Budget Office for AFOSI and AFIA.

He retired due to a brain tumor discovered in 1992.

His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with two oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service medal, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with two oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Air Force Training Ribbon.

In 1994 the Brettells moved to Winfield where he was active with the Winfield Lions Club and Meals on Wheels and attended Grace United Methodist Church. He was also an active supporter of school activities at Pleasant Valley, Webster and Winfield Middle schools.

Survivors include his wife, Debora Brettell, and four daughters, Lauren, Anne, Emily and Sarah Brettell, all of Winfield; his parents, Allan and Pat Brettell, Ellisville, Mo.; and his sisters, Cindy Davis Brown, Ballwin, Mo., and Bonnie Manuel, O'Fallon, Mo..

Ray Smith

Ray D. Smith, 76, of Village East, 1500 E. 10th, Winfield, died April 8, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and until noon Saturday.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Smith was born May 27, 1921, near Yuma, Colo., to Elmer Lawrence and Verlye Maude (Jones) Smith. When he was three, the family moved to Kansas. He later attended the Queen Village rural school east of Wilmot. The family moved to the Redbud community near Udall when he was 12, and he began farming with his family as a young man.

On Sept. 25, 1941, he married Elizabeth S. Bannon in Newton. They lived on a farm south of Udall for many years. He owned and operated a filling station in Udall and was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita.

In 1969 the Smiths moved to Winfield where he worked for the local Oklahoma Tire & Supply Co. store for several years before resuming work at Boeing. The Smiths also served as managers for the Village East complex. His wife died July 8, 1984.

Smith retired from Boeing as a tool and die maker in the late 1980s.

A former member of the Udall United Methodist Church, he was affiliated with the Winfield Senior Citizens and the Walnut Valley Old-Time Pickers, Fiddlers and Singers Association.

Survivors include a son, Darwin Smith, Waldron; three sisters, Eleanor Krepps and Dorothy Bannon, both of Winfield, and Mary Manning, Topeka; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

A daughter, LaDonna Kay, died in 1968.

Jesse Zang

Jesse William Zang, 64, of 1415 E. Sixth, Winfield, died April 8, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Gerald Graber will officiate. Burial will be in Longwood Cemetery east of Ponca City, Okla.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Zang was born July 5, 1933, near Webb City, Okla., to William Herschel and Dorothy Mae (Shoupe) Zang. He was raised in the Ponca City area, attended rural Ponca City schools and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1952. He attended Oklahoma State University and as a young man began employment as a timekeeper for Santa Fe Railway.

On June 7, 1953, he married Sue Jane Barnes in Ponca City.

Zang worked for the El Dorado water department for 10 years and became head operator of the waterworks department at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri in 1964. Due to failing health, he retired from government service in 1988.

The Zangs moved from Warrensburg, Mo., to Winfield in July 1995. He attended Central Baptist Church and was formerly affiliated with the American Waterworks Association.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Zang, Winfield; a son, Scott Zang, Wichita; and a sister, Shirley Joan Tackett, Tuscahoma, Okla.

Jesse Zang

Services for Jesse William Zang, 64, who died April 8, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. April 11 at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Longwood Cemetery at Ponca City, Okla.

Organist was Gwen Lumbert. Vocal music selections were "Precious Memories," performed by Della Moore, and "Rock of Ages," performed by Garren Johnson.

Casket bearers were Garren and Tracy Johnson, Eddie Matthews, Bruce Moore, Leroy Tackett and Chuck Zang.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Fultz

BLACKWELL, Okla. - Leroy Earl Fultz, 79, of Blackwell, died April 7, 1998, in the Claremore (Okla.) Veterans Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Church of Christ in Blackwell. David Fultz and Loren McCord will officiate. Burial will be in Blackwell Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Claremore Veterans Center and the Parkinsons Information and Referral Center. Contributions can be made through Roberts and Son Funeral Home, Blackwell.

Fultz was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Portland, Kan., to Earl and Susan Elizabeth (Smith) Fultz. He attended schools in the Portland and Braman and Blackwell, Okla., areas.

Fultz worked on neighboring farms until 1941 when he entered the U.S. Army. He served with the 3564th Ordnance Group in the European Theater during World War II.

On July 5, 1941, he married Merlene Fitch in Perry, Okla. Following his discharge, they farmed near Braman until moving to Blackwell in 1994.

Fultz served as a rural mail carrier from 1967 through 1983, working out of Braman, Newkirk and Billings, Okla.

He moved to the Claremore Veterans Center in 1995.

He was a member of the Church of Christ of Blackwell and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Merlene Fultz, Blackwell; two sons, Gary Fultz, Blackwell, and Earl Fultz, Grandview, Mo.; six daughters, Karen Hill, Arkansas City, Jo Rainbolt and Susan Cummins, both of Claremore, Sherry Henderson, Stillwater, Okla., Nancy Leslie, Blackwell, and Lorena Heiden, Choctaw, Okla.; three sisters, Thelma Smith, Winfield, Earlene Rhors, Blackwell, and Wanda Pingry, Arkansas City; 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A son, Douglas Leroy Fultz, preceded him in death.

Clinton Karrick

Clinton William Karrick, 17, of 504 Alexander, Winfield, died April 10, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Karrick was born Sept. 18, 1980, in Beloit, to Bob and Bernadette Karrick. He moved to Winfield State Hospital and Training Center when he was 18 months old. A sophomore at Winfield High School, he had lived at 504 Alexander for the past eight months.

Karrick was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents, Bob and Bernadette Karrick, and three brothers, Ryan, Shane and Lance Karrick, all of Wichita; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Urban, Osborne; and his care home provider, Marsha Perry, Winfield.
