Alberta Cole

CEDAR VALE - Alberta L. Cole, 87, of Cedar Vale, died April 24, 1998, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. Loren Grimes will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.

A memorial has been established with the People Place in Cedar Vale.

Cole was born Nov. 10, 1910, at Cedar Vale, to Edward and Katherine (Shultz) Sheldon. She was raised and educated in Cedar Vale.

On Aug. 12, 1928, she married M. Carl Cole in the Baptist Church parsonage in Cedar Vale. He died Feb. 6, 1989.

She ran a cafe in Cedar Vale in the early 1950s and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Donald Lee Cole, Arkansas City; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Cole.

Richard Gentry

Richard K. "Dick" Gentry, 67, of 416 Massachusetts, Winfield, died April 25, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. A private family burial will be held in Union Cemetery at a later time.

A memorial has been established with Enterprise Seventh-Day Adventist Boarding Academy in Enterprise.

Gentry was born March 29, 1931, in Salina, to Henry and Myrna (Kious) Gentry. He was raised in Winfield and was a 1949 graduate of Winfield High School. He attended college in California and served in the Kansas National Guard.

Gentry worked as an engineer and later in administration for Allied Signal and Boeing Aircraft.

In September 1989 he married Yolanda Yao in Nevada.

He attended the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Yolanda Gentry, Winfield; two sons, Steve Gentry, Orange County, Calif., and Bruce Gentry, Seattle; five daughters, Noemi Rocha and Jacqueline Wright, both of Houston, Sephora Harmon, Jackson, Tenn., Bathsheba Hilario, Seattle, and Charissa Harper, Germany; and nine grandchildren.

Nadine Woody

DOUGLASS - Nadine Woody, 84, of Douglass, died April 27, 1998, at Augusta Medical Complex.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church of Douglass. The Rev. Cliff Muci will officiate. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Douglass Public Library.

Woody was born Aug. 3, 1913. She was a librarian.

Survivors include two sons, John Woody, Douglass, and Albert Woody, Peoria, Ill., a sister, Betty King, Wichita; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Alberta Cole

CEDAR VALE - Services for Alberta L. Cole, 87, who died April 24, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. April 27 at Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Loren Grimes officiated, and Danice Sweet was the vocalist.

Honorary casket bearer was Oscar Mattocks. Casket bearers were Gerald Magnuss, Buddy Holt, Jake Clover, Mickey Myers, Vern Sweeney and Doyle Seaman.

A memorial has been established with People Place of Cedar Vale.

Mary Stewart

Mary S. Stewart, 72, of 207 N. Iowa, Winfield, died April 28, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. A private burial will be held later in the Elsmore, Kan., cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Stewart was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Merced, Calif., to Addison Greenup and Mary Elizabeth (Stewart) Scott. She moved to Kansas as a young girl, was educated in Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1943.

On March 16, 1944, she married Earl W. Stewart in Erie, and they made their first home in Elsmore. They lived in Merced for four years before returning to Elsmore in 1949. They later resided in Chanute, Kansas City, Mo., and Blue Springs, Mo., before returning to Merced in 1968.

Stewart was employed as a dispatcher for the Yellow Cab Co. and also as a waitress in the Kansas City area.

The couple had resided in Winfield since 1982. A homemaker, Stewart was a member of Foursquare Harvest Fellowship Church in Arkansas City.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Stewart, Winfield; four sons, Stanley Stewart, Emporia, George Robert Stewart, Winfield, Earl Allen Stewart, Kansas City, Mo., and Paul Wayne Stewart, Cabazon, Calif.; a daughter, Lynne Sutton, Rantoul; a brother, George Washington Scott, Sedan; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Richard Gentry

Services for Richard K. "Dick" Gentry, 67, who died April 25, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. April 28 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Pastors Burton Santee and Scott Kraus officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

Jean Wooddell was the organist, and Wilma Anglemyer was the vocalist. Music selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were Walter Buddemyer, Stanley Jenkins, Earl DeVore, Howard Stuber, Bill Sturm and Melvin Finuf.

Casket bearers were Robert Harman, Juan Rocha, Lloyd Wright, Trey Harper and Steve and Bruce Gentry.

A memorial has been established with the Seventh Day Adventist Boarding Academy in Enterprise.

Albert Fresh

ARKANSAS CITY - Albert Guy Fresh, 95, of Arkansas City, died April 29, 1998, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Parker Cemetery. The Rev. L. Don Richardson will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Medicalodge East. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Fresh was born Aug. 15, 1902, in Cowley County, to Benjamin and Florence Belle (Pugh) Fresh. As a youngster he attended Cameron School.

On Oct. 25, 1938, he married Pearl Anna Shipp in Wichita. They made their home on Route 3 in Arkansas City.

Mr. Fresh was a farmer and was employed at Silverdale Limestone and Born Stone companies.

He was a member of the Silverdale Church.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Fresh, Arkansas City; a son, Loren A. Fresh, Mooresville, N.C.; a daughter, Leta A. Sherwood, Winfield; two grandsons, a granddaughter and one great-grandchild.

Edith Prosser

HESSTON - Edith E. Prosser, 97, of Hesston, formerly of Winfield and Latham, died April 30, 1998, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Schowalter Villa Chapel. The Rev. Ron Rich and Chaplain Mary Dyck will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Latham Cemetery.

Friends may call at Petersen Funeral Home in Hesston from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorial contributions can be made to Schowalter Villa.

Prosser was born June 29, 1900, in Latham, to Edward and Rhoda (Bogue) Prosser. Until 1920 she lived in Latham where she graduated from Latham High School.

Prosser graduated from Southwestern College and served as an assistant to the college's registrar. She also received a master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Prosser taught school in Pawnee Rock, Arma, Girard, Cherokee, Fulton and Galena for 32 years before retiring in 1956.

A Winfield resident for 50 years, she moved to Hesston in 1970.

Survivors include a nephew, Wes Prosser, Sherrard, Ill.

Dorothy Boggs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Dorothy "D.D." Phelps Boggs, 72, of Greensboro, formerly of Winfield, died April 30, 1998, in Greensboro.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 tonight in the Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel.

Boggs was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Wichita to Jack and Alberta (Ninninger) Dale. The family moved to Winfield where she was educated in local schools and graduated from Southwestern College.

She married and raised her children in Winfield before moving to Austin, Texas. She and her husband later divorced, and she moved to Greensboro nine years ago.

Boggs was a registered nurse with the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf and a member of the First Christian Church of Greensboro.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice L. Smith and Cheryl Fry; an adopted daughter, Lisa Bryant; a granddaughter and four adopted grandchildren, all of Greensboro.
