Alma Lazenby

ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Alma Lazenby, 93, who died May 10, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. May 13 in the chapel of Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City. The Rev. David Cheshire officiated. "Amazing Grace" was sung.

Casket bearers were Bill and Roland Hayes, Byron Jones, Joe Krafels, Bill and Neal Lazenby and Bill Wheeler.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Rest Haven.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Gary Kilts

WICHITA - Gary Ray Kilts, 57, truck driver, of Wichita, died May 7, 1998, in Tulsa, Okla.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Lingle Cemetery at Pulaski, Miss.

Friends may call at Smith Mortuary in Derby between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday.

Kilts was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Winfield. He had served with the U.S. Marines.

Survivors include his wife, June Kilts, and a son, Greg Kilts, both of Wichita; his stepmother, Irene Nuss, Derby; two brothers, Joe Kilts, Fort Meyers, Fla., and Larry Kilts, Wichita; a half-brother, Marty Pierce, Wichita; two step-brothers, David Stewart, Wichita, and Dwayne Stewart, Udall; and three grandchildren.

Dallas Harrod

MOLINE - Dallas Eugene Harrod, 71, of Moline, formerly of Winfield, died May 13, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Robin Haines will officiate. A private burial of his cremains will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Howard Senior Center. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Harrod was born June 27, 1926, in Howard, to William Watson and Ada Lillian (Stone) Harrod. He attended school in the Howard community. During World War II, he served with the United States Navy.

On May 18, 1945, he married Donzella Ingle in Howard. They later divorced.

On March 18, 1974, he married Freda Deloris (Lewis) Ramsey in Manhattan. This marriage also ended in divorce.

Harrod had been a self-employed plumbing contractor for many years. He lived most of his life in Harper, Independence, Winfield and Howard.

He was a resident of Elk Manor Nursing Home at the time of his death.

Survivors include a son, Rodney Harrod, Winfield; a daughter, Rogene Robbins, Ralston, Neb.; two brothers, Kenneth Harrod, Howard, and Chet Harrod, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Naomi Hinkle, Valley Center; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Kristin Hardin

HOWARD - Kristin Claudette Hardin, 51, of Howard, died May 13, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Howard Twilight Manor. The Rev. Robin Haines will officiate. Private burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola.

A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Hardin was born Nov. 21, 1946, in Modesto, Calif., to Dr. Claude Everett and Bonnie Lee (Shaff) Hardin. She attended school in California and then Grenola after the family moved there when she was seven.

Hardin lived in Elk County the rest of her life.

Survivors include a brother, Ronald Hardin, El Cajon, Calif.

Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys

Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys, 93, internationally known artist and teacher, died May 14, 1998, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the garden at her home at 1302 E. 12th. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the family home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys Visual Arts Scholarship at the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council and the Mobile Van Fund at Cumbernauld Village.

Covacevich-Boys was born Feb. 14, 1905, in Wellington, to Harvey and Julia (Miller) Hill. She was raised in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School.

In 1927 she received a diploma in painting from Bethany College in Lindsborg where she had studied under Birger Sandzen. She earned a degree from Southwestern College in 1945 and a master of arts degree from Colorado State University in 1950. She also received an honorary doctorate from Southwestern in 1989.

Covacevich-Boys continued her studies during a 12-year residence in Mexico where she worked at the San Carlos Art School. There she met and worked with Diego Rivera.

She retired from teaching in 1973 after a 43-year career at the primary, secondary and college levels. During her 10 years as a teacher at Derby High School, her students completed 120 mosaic murals. A pioneer in art therapy, she established innovative programs at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in the 1950s. The Menninger Clinic has used her program as a model for other institutions. She ended her teaching career at Cowley County Community College.

Covacevich-Boys was an international award-winning artist. Her paintings have been in exhibitions in Florence, Rome and London as well as in many U.S. galleries. She has prints in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

She received many awards for her work as well as for her teaching. The awards include one from the Kansas Arts Commission, Governor's Artist of the Year Award in 1981; a special citation, Outstanding Kansas Artist and Teacher, from Wichita State University in 1979; Woman of Achievement in the Arts, from Wichita Women in Communications Inc. in 1974; and the gold medal at the XXI Internazionale D'Arte Contemporanca, Florence, Italy, in 1971.

Covacevich-Boys was a member of the Wichita Artist Guild, National Pen Women, Kansas Federation of the Arts and Soroptimists.

She had an influence on the Winfield community in addition to teaching in the public schools and at Southwestern College. Boys painted the "Historical Cowley County" mural in the First National Bank lobby and founded the Winfield Arts Center which later became the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council. She was commissioned by the Winfield Bicentennial Committee to do a stainless steel sculpture, "Gateway to the Future," which was installed in Island Park.

Covacevich-Boys wrote two books, "Impressions of Mexico," in 1938, and "Churches of Mexico," in 1944. She published four folios of block prints. Her illustrations have been included in textbooks for the study of English adopted by Mexican secondary schools.

In 1932 she married Nicolas Covacevich, who preceded her in death.

In 1979 she married Lewis Boys. He died March 3, 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Covacevich-Grana, Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Jean Van Dyk, and a stepson, Jack Boys, preceded her in death.

Hilma Howard

WICHITA - Hilma Dickenson Howard, 87, homemaker, of Wichita, died May 14, 1998.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary. Graveside services will be held at noon in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

A memorial has been established with East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67218.

Howard was born June 13, 1910, in Rock, to Oliver J. and Hazel May (Cook) Dickinson.

Survivors include her husband, James Howard, a son, Gary W. Howard, and a sister, Roberta Jean Wilson, all of Wichita.

Francis Mantz

WICHITA - Francis P. Mantz, 78, of Wichita, died May 15, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith Mortuary in Haysville. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Oatville.

Mantz was born July 30, 1919, in Woods County, Okla., to Thomas and Ella (Gwinup) Throckmorton. She was raised in Oklahoma.

On Oct. 18, 1935, she married Justin Mantz in Cherokee, Okla.

She was a retired nurse at Wesley Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, Justin Mantz, Wichita; two sons, Jack Mantz, Omaha, Neb., and Terry Mantz, LaBelle, Fla.; a daughter, Sandra Braddy, Udall; two brothers, Tommy Throckmorton, Ringling, Okla., and Bill Throckmorton, Wichita; two sisters, Leona Williams, Guymon, Okla., and Joan Eakin, Ringling, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Joyce Evans

WICHITA - Joyce Aileen (Steward) Evans, 66, of Wichita, retired purchasing agent for heath care companies, died May 14, 1998.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Old Mission Mortuary.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Evans, Wichita; two daughters, Rhonda Clyne and Dee Gordon, both of Wichita; two stepsons, John Evans and Mark Evans, both of San Diego; her mother, Thelma Defore, Winfield; four brothers, Bob Massey and Jack Massey, both of Dexter, Joe Massey, Cedar Vale, and Dan Defore, Winfield; a sister, Debbie Bauer, Wichita; four half-sisters, Donna Storey and Cleta Porter, both of Winfield, Glenda Lane, California, and Janie Ketchum, Udall; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Janeane Butterfield

OVERLAND PARK - Janeane Marie Butterfield, 64, of Overland Park, died May 15, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newcomer's White Chapel, Gladstone, Mo. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions can be sent to Countryside Christian Church, 6101 Nall Avenue, Mission, KS 66205.

Butterfield was born in Kansas City, Mo. She was a teller supervisor for Mercantile Bank of Kansas for 26 years before retiring in 1996.

She was a member of the Countryside Christian Church, bell choir, Christian Women's Fellowship, Fireside Class and La Sertoma Club and had served as church treasurer.

Survivors include her husband, Buddy L. Butterfield, Overland Park; a son, John Michael Butterfield, Houston; three daughters, Laura Marie Morford, Winfield, Theresa Kathryn Caton, Independence, Mo., and Janeane Joy Butterfield, Overland Park; and five grandchildren.

Gerald Sanburn

NICKERSON - Gerald E. Sanburn, 60, of Nickerson, died May 15, 1998, at his home.

Services were held at 10 a.m. May 18 at Johnson & Sons Memorial Chapel in Hutchinson. Pastor Merv Goodrick presided. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the PKR Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

Sanburn was born Sept. 4, 1937, in Burden, to Fred Bryon and Wilma (Parsons) Sanburn. He graduated from Milan High School. A veteran of the United States Army, he served from 1959 to 1965.

On Feb. 10, 1965, he married Merna Goodrick in Caldwell.

A Boeing employee for 15 years, he then was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1995. He lived in Hutchinson for 26 years before moving to Nickerson in 1996.

Sanburn was a member of the Church of God, National Rifle Association and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was a past president of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Survivors include his wife, Merna Goodrick, Nickerson; two sons, Joel Bryon Sanburn and Wesley Eugene Sanburn, and his mother, Wilma Parsons-Ankrom, all of Hutchinson; a sister, Martha Ann Evans, Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
