Lydia Feaster

OXFORD - Lydia Violia Feaster, 102, of Oxford, died June 29, 1998, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Oxford Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Riverview Manor. Contributions can be made through Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.

Feaster was born Dec. 31, 1895, in Boone County, Mo., to Joseph and Martha (Hampton) Gold. On Sept. 28, 1913, she married Clarence Everett Feaster in Aurora, Mo.

In 1919 she rode on a train from Aurora to Wichita with her three-year-old daughter. C.E. "Pop" Feaster drove a team of horses and wagon from Missouri, bringing all their goods with him. They lived in Wichita and Mulvane until moving to Oxford in 1935 to operate Oxford Sand and Gravel Co. The Feasters operated the company until his death in 1959.

Feaster was known for her cooking, especially her fried fruit pies. She was a member of the Soldenela Club of Oxford and the Winfield Saddle Club.

Survivors include three sons, J.D. Feaster, Wellington, Elbert Feaster, Fort Worth, Texas, and Max Feaster, Wichita; a daughter, Audrey Barron, Hemet, Calif.; a brother, Clarence Gold, Wichita; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Margaret Tucker, preceded her in death.

Truman Doolittle

WILMOT - Services for Truman Doolittle, 87, who died June 24, 1998, were held at 11 a.m. June 29 in Wilmot Cemetery. The Rev. Lawn Sauer officiated. The vocal music selection was "Peace in the Valley."

A memorial has been established with Home Health Care of William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Wohlford

SEVERY - Louvilla Marie Wohlford, 91, homemaker, died June 30, 1998, at her home in Severy.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Tami Digman Transplant Fund in care of Home Bank and Trust in Severy. Contributions can also be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Wohlford was born Oct. 22, 1906, at El Dorado Springs, Mo., to Oscar and Hattie (Daley) Bloom. She moved with her family to Oswego and later to El Dorado where she attended school.

On Sept. 7, 1923, she married John Burnham in El Dorado. They made their home on a farm south of Leon for several years before moving to LaFountaine in 1952. In 1960 they moved to Severy. Her husband died Jan. 21, 1976.

She later married Ivan Wohlford, who died in 1988.

Wohlford was a member of the Kansas Farm Bureau and a longtime member of the Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Clara E. Hampton, Severy; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Casper Groene

Casper Groene, 91, of 1525 Mound, Winfield, died July 3, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, both at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Church.

Groene was born Nov. 21, 1906, at Fort Madison, Iowa, to Joseph and Theresa (Kessler) Groene. The family moved to a farm nine miles northwest of Winfield in 1915, and he attended the Mount Vernon school and Winfield Commercial College.

On June 2, 1956, he married Lucille Tracy in Wichita.

A farmer and rancher, he and his brothers, Albert and Joseph Groene, operated the farm after their father's death in 1945 until retirement in 1976.

Groene was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on many church committees for 40 years.

He was a member of the Winfield Elks Lodge and the Lions Club, a former president of the Cowley County Farm Bureau Association and a member of the board of directors of the Kellogg Cooperative Association.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Groene, Winfield; and numerous nephews and nieces, including Raymond Groene, Francis Groene, Elaine Barnthouse, Kathleen Lewis and Lorraine Donohue, all of Winfield, and Leonard and Ed Groene, both of Arkansas City.

Dorothy Johnson

ARKANSAS CITY - Dorothy Louise Johnson, 92, of Arkansas City, died July 2, 1998, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.

At her request, no service will be held. Cremation has been effected.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church, Cowley County Community College and Emporia State University. Contributions can be sent to Hawks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Arkansas City, KS 67005.

Johnson was born Aug. 7, 1905, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Herbert F. and Etta (Cochran) Felt. They lived in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska before moving to Salina in 1918.,She graduated from Salina High School in 1924 and attended Kansas Wesleyan University before graduating from Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia in 1929 with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught for a year in a rural school at Falun.

On May 23, 1931, she married Dr. Paul Martin Johnson and moved to Arkansas City. Her husband was president of Cowley County Community College before his death March 25, 1968.

Johnson was a substitute teacher at Arkansas City High School until becoming the librarian at the junior high school in 1943. She was later librarian at the junior college for three years.

Johnson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; Victory Chapter 152 and Order of Eastern Star and a life member and past president of Spencer Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, the Kansas Retired Teachers Association, the Salmagundi Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and Chapter GH of PEO.

She had served as president of the local Republican Women's Club, was a member of the Kansas Federation and the National Federation of Republican Women and had been active in the Green Thumb Garden Club.

Survivors include her friends, Clyde and Velda Hatcher, Arkansas City, who cared for her for many years, and two nieces, Joan Rasmussen, Sandy, Ore., and Linda Rust, Spokane, Wash.

Lee Reeves

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Leland "Lee" Edward Reeves, 59, of Summerville, died July 2, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff will officiate. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Palmetto Hospice and Masonic Lodge 234, both of Summerville.

Reeves was born Jan. 26, 1939, near Wilmot, to Ralph Leonard and Ora Geneva (Dunn) Reeves. He attended the Lone Star grade school and Geuda Springs High School. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1975.

On March 12, 1960, he married Jeanette Coppenbarger in Arkansas City.

While in the Navy, he lived several places, including Charleston, S.C. He later owned and operated a cabinet-making business and drove trucks across the country.

Reeves was a member of the Baptist Church in Hanahan, S.C., and was active in Masonic work. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 234 in Summerville and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 143, had served as chapter advisor of DeMolay and helped with Rainbow Girls.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Reeves, and a son, Gilbert Reeves, both of Summerville; a daughter, Jeannie Sue Reeves, Moncks, S.C.; his parents, Ralph and Ora Reeves, Arkansas City; two brothers, Leonard Reeves, Edwards, Mo., and Lawrence Reeves, Canon City, Colo.; and a sister, Louise Bauman, Houston.

Mary Boyer

MOLINE - Mary Juanita Boyer, 85, of Moline, died July 2, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Moline Cemetery. The Rev. Harold Tucker will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Moline Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Boyer was born June 12, 1913, at Howard, to George "Mont" and Erma (Kelly) Boone. She was raised in the Howard community and graduated from Howard High School in 1930.

On Aug. 2, 1931, she married Neil Jackson Boyer in Newkirk, Okla. They made their home on a farm west of Moline. After her husband died in June 1970, Boyer moved into Moline and was employed as a nurse's aide at Sedan City Hospital until her retirement.

For the past six weeks she had resided at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.

Boyer was a longtime member of the Moline Baptist Church and Friendly Neighbor Club.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald Boyer, Moline, and Michael Boyer, Longford; a daughter, Pat McAlister, Moline; a sister, Ruth Richardson, Klamath Falls, Ore.; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

A son, Kenneth Boyer, and two daughters, Phyllis Hurla and Irma Jean Boyer, preceded her in death.

Mary Oakes

Mary Louise Oakes, 59, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died July 5, 1998, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber will officiate. A private burial service will be held in Rose Valley Cemetery, southeast of Winfield.

A memorial has been established with Victory in the Valley in Wichita. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Oakes was born Dec. 7, 1938, in Wichita, to George D. and Hazel (Bond) Underwood. Raised in Rose Hill, Wichita and Leon, she was a 1957 graduate of Leon High School.

On Nov. 3, 1955, she married Harold E. Oakes in El Dorado. They lived in France, Spain, Morocco and Germany, as well as at several U.S. military locations. They divorced in 1965.

In 1967 Oakes moved to Arizona where she was employed as a proofreader for American Bank Stationery Co. in Phoenix. She retired in 1983. In 1988 she moved to Winfield and began attending Cowley County Community College from which she graduated in 1996 with a degree in law enforcement.

Oakes had resided at Walnut Hill Nursing Center for the past month.

Survivors include a son, David Oakes, Winfield; a daughter, Linda Reed, Peoria, Ariz.; her parents, George and Hazel Underwood, Dexter; two brothers, George Underwood, Seattle, and Orlan Underwood, Winfield; and two grandchildren.

Beatrice Howk

ARKANSAS CITY - Beatrice Howk, 88, of Arkansas City, died July 2, 1998, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Geuda Springs. Pastor Tony Horsley will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Mount Hope United Methodist Church and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through Hawks Funeral Home.

Howk was born Jan. 14, 1910, in Apache, Okla., to Daniel V. and Ella (Coppenbarger) Waggoner. She was raised on a farm near Geuda Springs and graduated from Geuda Springs High School and Wichita Business College.

On Nov. 20, 1938, she married Ira Howk in Blackwell, Okla. They farmed for five years near Upton, Mo., before moving to Arkansas City.

Howk had worked at Mauer-Neuer and later at the Woolsworth store in Arkansas City.

She was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Irene Clodfelter, Granville, Ohio, and four grandchildren.

Her husband and a daughter, Charlotta Ellen Hawkins, preceded her in death.
