Ross Williams

Ross O. Williams, 86, of 1428 E. Third, Winfield, retired Southwestern College music professor and longtime Winfield resident, died Sept. 14, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther and Diane Massey will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Williams will lie in state at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 7 to 9.

Members of the community are invited to sing two "Elijah" choruses during the funeral. A rehearsal will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be sent to Ross Williams memorials at Southwestern College, the First Presbyterian Church or the Rotary Foundation.

Williams was born in Wichita in 1912 to Elmer and Hannah (Price) Williams. He graduated from Wichita East High School and Southwestern College and received a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He did extensive postgraduate work at the University of Colorado.

In 1936 he married Agnes Adams, also of Wichita.

Williams taught in Dodge City public schools and at Dodge City Junior College before moving to Winfield to teach at Southwestern College as a professor of orchestra and string instruments. Many of his students have gone on to careers and leadership in the music world. He was recently listed as one of 25 Americans to be 50-year members of the Music Educators National Conference.

In 1947 he revitalized the Winfield Oratorio Society's annual presentation of Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah," which he conducted for 42 years in Winfield. He also conducted "Elijah" performances in Wichita, Dodge City, Liberal, Boulder, Colo., and Israel. In his early days in Winfield, he also served as director of the Winfield City Band.

For more than 40 years he served as minister of music at the First Presbyterian Church where he was also elected deacon and elder.

He was presented an honorary doctorate and a Moundbuildern Citation by Southwestern College. In 1978 he was inducted into the Kansas Music Educators Hall of Fame and shortly after was presented the American String Teachers Association's Kansas Outstanding Teacher Award.

For more than 50 years he was a member of the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and past president of the club. For the past few years he had been chairman of the Chamber Ambassadors. He had served on the Winfield Sister City Committee since its inception and for several years on the Senior Citizens Advisory Council.

Williams is survived by his wife, Agnes Williams, Winfield; two sons, Bruce Williams, McAllen, Texas, and Larry Williams, Lenexa; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Kirtz Payeur

Kirtz M. Payeur, 91, farmer and rancher, of Winfield, died Sept. 13, 1998.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hope Cemetery at Clyde. Nutter Funeral Chapel in Clyde is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the William Newton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Cowley County Council on Aging.

Payeur was born July 4, 1907, in Clyde, to Walter and Nellie (Huffman) Payeur. He graduated from Clyde High School in 1925.

On Nov. 1, 1936, he married Mary Hakes. On March 6, 1967, he married Rena Paquette Sorrell.

Survivors include his wife, Rena Payeur, and a son, Dean Sorrell, both of Winfield; three daughters, Janice Underwood, McPherson, Sandy Shimek, Winfield, and Mary Chartier, Concordia; two brothers, Darrell Payeur and Dick Payeur, both of Clyde; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Emma Frost

EUREKA - Emma Louise Frost, 91, of Eureka, formerly of Severy, died Sept. 14, 1998, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery in Severy. Sue Hurt will be organist, and Roylynn Pameticky will sing "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "You Are My Sunshine."

Casket bearers will be Bobby Coble, Melvin Doane, Donnie and Roger Hedrick, Orville Higbee and Lawrence Smith.

A memorial has been established with Medicalodge of Eureka. Contributions can be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Frost was born Sept. 3, 1907, in Eureka, to Walter Chandler and Jessie (Scott) Vann. She was raised and educated in Fall River.

On Feb. 19, 1929, she married Eddie "Pete" Emmett Frost in Eureka. He preceded her in death.

A homemaker, she was also employed for several years as a cook in the Severy school and at restaurants in the Severy area. She was also employed briefly by Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita.

A resident of Medicalodge in Eureka since July, she was a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Lend-a-Hand Club of Severy.

Survivors include two daughters, Lucille Dalbey, Wichita, and Jessie Cole, Severy; a sister, Mary Praisewater, Houston; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Faye Mundon-Gipson

Faye Mundon-Gipson, 90, of Walnut Hill Nursing Center, died Sept. 15, 1998, at the center.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Towanda City Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber will officiate. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mundon-Gipson was born March 25, 1908, in Sedan, to Alex and Martha (Morgan) Sawtelle. She worked many years as the city clerk of Towanda, retiring in 1970.

Her husband Clarence Mundon died in 1965.

A member of Fairview Baptist Church in Towanda, she had lived in Arkansas City before moving to Winfield.

Survivors include two sons, LeRoy Vicars, Winfield, and William Paul Mundon, West Virginia; a daughter, Mary Schoolman, Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Pauline Sawtelle, Augusta; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Jimmy McArtor

MOBERLY, Mo. - Jimmy W. McArtor, 45, of Moberly, died Sept. 15, 1998, at Ellis Fischel Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Cater Funeral Home Chapel in Moberly. The Rev. Gary Hofstetter will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until service time Thursday.

McArtor was born July 9, 1953, in Winfield, to Everett and Beulah (Clemons) McArtor. On July 8, 1976, he married Lou Ann Wiechert in Winfield.

Prior to a disability, he was a self-employed welder.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Ann Wiechert, three sons, Joe McArtor, Wes McArtor and Scott McArtor, and a daughter, Leah McArtor, all of Moberly; two brothers, Bill McArtor and Steve McArtor, both of Winfield, and two grandchildren.

Helen Green

Services for Helen N. Green, 68, who died Sept. 9, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 16 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Paul Krueger officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Robbie Banks performed "Wayfaring Stranger," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" and "Joyful, Joyful to the Lord." A taped selection was "Holes in the Floor of Heaven."

Honorary casket bearers were Alfred Barnes, Roger Brooner, Robert Nichols, George M. Brooner, Greg Williamson and Zane Gray.

Casket bearers were Handy Green, Lucas Wise, Jason VanKirk, Jim Banks, Roger Holman and Gary Hanshaw.

Memorials have been established with the Southwest Indian Foundation and World Wildlife Federation.

Evelyn Bayne

NORWALK, Calif. - Evelyn Lois (Muret) Bayne, 83, formerly of Palmdale, Calif., and Winfield, died Aug. 17, 1998, in Norwalk.

A memorial service was held Aug. 21 at Chapel of the Valley Mortuary in Palmdale.

A memorial has been established with Hackney Community Baptist Church.

Bayne was born Nov. 12, 1914, south of Winfield, to Ernest C. and Addie (Fisher) Muret. Her mother died when Bayne was two years old, so Myrtle Muret, her aunt, moved to the farm to help her brother raise his children.

Bayne was educated in Holland rural school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1932. She attended secretarial school in Glendale, Calif., and was then employed by the Young Men's Christian Association.

On June 21, 1941, she married Paul Bayne in Glendale. In 1954 they moved to Palmdale.

Bayne resided in Palmdale for 44 years and was a longtime member of the Women's Club of Palmdale. She had joined Hackney Baptist Church in 1930 and maintained her membership there until transferring it to a Glendale church in 1987.

Mr. Bayne died in 1980, and an infant son, James Bayne, died in 1950.

Survivors include a son, John Frederick Bayne, and a daughter, Paula Ames, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild, all of California; two nephews, Bill Whitson, Oxford, and Joe Muret, Winfield, and two nieces, Kay Rice and Lee Kelly, both of Winfield.

Delbert Craig

HOWARD - Delbert Lee Craig, 74, of Howard, died Sept. 14, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Seward, Neb., cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Craig was born Dec. 1, 1923, in Beaver Crossing, Neb., to John Webster and Winifred Mae (Dobson) Craig. He attended school at Seward.

Craig lived in California as a young man but made his home in Nebraska and Kansas during most of his life.

On April 19, 1971, he married Shirley Ann Prather in Seward where they made their home before moving to Howard in 1986.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Dewlin-Dix Post 1186 in Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Craig, Howard; a son, Stan Craig, Shelton, Neb.; four daughters, Debbie Ogea, Dessa Craig, Suzette Waechter and Chris Seifker, all of Lincoln, Neb.; a stepson, Glenn Hawkinson, Hutchinson; a sister, Susie Alley, Seward, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Earl Chapman

TACOMA, Wash. - Earl Ray Chapman, 74, of Tacoma, former Winfield and Burden area resident, died Sept. 14, 1998, in Puyallup, Wash.

Services will be held in Highland Cemetery at Winfield at 4 p.m. Friday. Frank Funeral Home of Wellington is in charge of arrangements.

Chapman was born Nov. 8, 1923, in Winfield, to Frank and Elsie Caroline Anastasia (Morain) Chapman. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.

A salesman for Carnation Milk Co., he was an elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a member of the Teamsters Union.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris A. deBruyn, Puyallup, and Lola Chapman, Goleta, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
