Marie Connor
MOLINE - Marie Pauline Connor, 91, of Moline, died Jan. 30, 1999, at Cedar Vale Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Cemetery
in Grenola. The Rev. Gerald Manley will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Moline United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Graves-Baird Funeral Home of Sedan.
Connor was born Sept. 21, 1907, in Grenola, to John and Laura (Hall) Munsey.
She was a retail clerk and a member of the Moline United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Eugene Connor, Mount Airy, N.C., and John Howard Connor, Martinez, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Belle Berbeck, Moline; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Harold Lauppe
Services for Harold Omer Lauppe, 95, who died Jan. 28, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 1, 1999, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art."
Honorary casket bearers were Mr. Lauppe's great-grandchildren: Shane Lauppe, Craig Lauppe, Austin Anders, Aaron Anders, Seth Yost, Augustus Anders, Adrienne Yost, Spenser Harms, Lauren Hicks, Joshua Beltz, Skylar Lauppe, Brenden Lauppe, Hollis Britton and Wylie Britton.
Casket bearers were Carroll Harris, Phillip Hart, Monte Lauppe, Steve Lauppe, Dick Meyer, Steve Robertson and Melvin Ruggles.
Memorials have been established with the Tisdale United Methodist Church and Cumbernauld Village.
Paul Houser
FORT WORTH, Texas - Paul Frederic Houser, 52, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 31, 1999, at his home in Fort Worth.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Memorial Park.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association or the charity of the donor's choice.
Houser was born June 5, 1946, in Winfield, to Paul R. and Patricia (Hughes) Houser. He had accompanied his parents throughout their career in the Air Force. He graduated from George Washington High School in Arlington, Va., and attended Wichita State University and Old Dominion University in Alexandria. Va.
A Fort Worth resident for 25 years, he had been a van driver for the railroad.
Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Belle Houser, Hurst, Texas; his parents, Paul R. and Patricia Houser, Benbrook, Texas; two brothers, Michael S. Houser, Las Vegas, Nev., and Steven P. Houser, Chicago; and a sister, Michele J. Gugas, Houston.
Mary Ella Shackelfoot
ARKANSAS CITY - Mary Ella "Mae" Shackelfoot, 82, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 1, 1999, at the Medicalodge North Post Acute Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of God in Christ. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Hawks Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Shackelfoot was born March 28, 1916, in Lincoln County, Okla., to Marchel Sullivan Sr. and John Ella (Bobo) Sullivan.
On Oct. 29, 1934, she married Willie C. Thomas Lee Robinson in Guthrie, Okla. They moved to Arkansas City in 1947. Mr. Robinson died on June 5, 1966.
On Feb. 4, 1969, she married Raymond Charles Shackelfoot Sr. in Arkansas City. He died on March 15, 1992.
Mrs. Shackelfoot had worked in private homes as a care giver for several years. She also owned and operated a restaurant in Arkansas City on West Jefferson Ave. and was a food instructor at Chilocco Indian School.
She was a member of the Church of God in Christ.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Yvonne Harper, Arkansas City; three stepsons, Raymond Charles Shackelfoot Jr., Freddie Lee Shackelfoot and Willie Joe Shackelfoot, all of San Jose, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Suzanna Green and Helen Marie Washington, both of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Jimmy Wayne Sullivan, Wichita; three sisters, Louise Jackson and Estella Thompson, both of Arkansas City, and Marie Johnson, Wichita; four grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
A son, Willie Robinson Jr., and a daughter, Estella Lugene Robinson, preceded her in death.
Beulah Sowersby
Beulah Mae Sowersby, 71, homemaker, of 316 Harter, Winfield, died Jan. 30, 1999, at Sumner County Regional Medical Center in Wellington.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lauerence Hastings will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home in Belle Plaine until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Sowersby was born Aug. 24, 1927, to Melvin Granville and Winona Mae (Smiley) Phipps.
She married Wayne E. Sowersby in 1944 in Wellington.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne E. Sowersby, Winfield; seven sons, Dennis Sowersby and Larry Sowersby, both of Wellington, Mike Sowersby, Steve Sowersby, Ronnie Sowersby, and Greg Sowersby, all of Wichita, and Jerry Sowersby, Winfield; four daughters, Patricia Harris, Bonnie Barraza, Brenda Hernandez and Connie Andrade, all of Wichita; a sister, Shirley Rowan, Westminster, Colo.; 48 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Leon Waite
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Leon Alvin Waite, 77, of Winfield, died Jan. 29, 1999, in Bakersfield. He had been visiting relatives in California since July 1998.
A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Maybrier will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home, 1220 N. Viking Boulevard, Winfield, KS 67156.
Waite was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Winfield, to Delmer and Sarah (Johnstone) Waite. He lived in Winfield all his life except while serving in the Army during World War II.
Waite first began farming, then raised hogs and did carpentry work. He built his home north of town on Cowley 27 and resided there 42 years before selling it last year. He also worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for a short time.
Waite was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, a charter member of the local Knights of Columbus council and a member of American Legion Post 10.
His first wife, Louise Baalmann Waite, died in 1978. His second wife, Elaine Buterbaugh Waite, died in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Waite, Bakersfield, Calif.; a daughter, Marsha Golden, Chula Vista, Calif.; a brother, Charles Waite, Worcester, Mass.; four sisters, Frances Johnson, Wagner, Okla., Edith Rottman, Roswell, N.M., Leora B. Pettit, Wickenburg, Ariz., and Janie Snell, Winfield; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Randall Frier
Randall Lee Frier, 36, of 1618 Loomis, Winfield, died Feb. 2, 1999, from injuries received in an industrial accident north of Winfield.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Wilmot Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas and Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Frier was born Sept. 1, 1962, in Winfield, to Donald J. and Glenice June (Kelly) Frier. He was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1980. He later attended the Motorcycle Mechanic Institute in Phoenix, then returned to Winfield.
Frier had worked for the past 10 years in Winfield as a self-employed machinist and welder.
He was affiliated with the Kansas and Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association.
Survivors include his brother, Jim Frier, Winfield, and an aunt, Glenda Weinrich, Alamogordo, N.M.
Harold Cummins
MONTGOMERY, Texas - Harold Oscar Cummins, 84, of Montgomery, formerly of Arkansas City, died Feb. 2, 1999, at his home.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Riverview Cemetery
in Arkansas City. The Rev. Mike Cosgrove will officiate.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
Cummins was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Portland, to Oscar C. and Elizabeth Esther (Miller) Cummins. He was raised in the Arkansas City area.
In 1942 he married Mary Jewell Wells in Springfield, Mo. She died in July 1966.
Cummins farmed east of Arkansas City for many years. He had lived in Texas for most of the last three years.
Survivors include two daughters, Lila Champlin, Montgomery, Texas, and Brenda Lankford, Grand Prairie, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Thomas Porter
Services for Thomas H. Porter, 66, who died Feb. 1, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4 at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Vocal music included recordings of "Go Rest High on That Mountain" by Vince Gill, "Angels Among Us" by Alabama and "Known Only to Him."
American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 conducted military committal ceremonies.
Honorary casket bearers were Porter's lodge brothers at Winfield Elks Lodge 732.
Casket bearers were Bob Hutto, Mark Hutto, Bill Larkin, Steve Larson, Walter Nichols and Larry Thiel.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Kansas Elks Training Center.
