Gene Williams

MOLINE - Frank Eugene "Gene" Williams, 61, of Moline, died May 29, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Moline Elementary School with Pastor Robin Haines officiating. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Moline City Park Improvement Fund. Contributions can be made at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard.

Williams was born Dec. 5, 1937, at Center, Colo., to Curtis and Leon Katherine (Fulton) Williams. He was raised in the Elk City and Havana areas and graduated from Havana High School in 1957.

Williams served with the Army National Guard from 1959 until retiring in 1998. He was employed by Phillips Petroleum Co. in Wichita for several years before moving to Moline. He was employed by Sedan Limestone at Sedan and later was a self-employed carpenter. He also served as Moline's city marshal.

On June 22, 1961, he married Pearl Esther Hey at Howard.

He was a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Williams, Moline; four sons, Rodney Williams, Grenola, Eric Williams, Moline, Jeff Williams, Missoula, Mont., and Steve Williams, Wellsville; his mother, Leon Williams, Independence; seven sisters, LaDonna Pickett, Longton, Wanda Pate, Wichita, Viva Schwatkin, Elk City, Elaine Workman, Round Rock, Texas, and Etta Shanks, Carol Bath and Kathy Brown, all of Independence; four brothers, Richard Williams, Sedan, Ben Williams, Franklin, Tenn., Terry Williams, Independence, and Tim Williams, Augusta; and three grandchildren.

Alfred Baker

PIPER - Alfred E. Baker Sr., 96, of Piper, died May 29, 1999, at Parkway Care Center in Edwardsville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Maywood Community Church, Piper, with burial in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Leavenworth.

Baker was born March 1, 1903, near Piper to Christ A. and Susie (Polfer) Baker, who had immigrated from Germany. He graduated from Piper High School.

Baker farmed and raised livestock near Piper until 1958. He was the first breeder of registered horned and polled Herefords in Wyandotte County and received one of the first state soil conservation awards in 1951.

He later was employed as an assistant parts manager for John Deere dealerships in Leavenworth, El Dorado and Fremont, Neb.

After retiring in 1968, he served as caretaker for the Wyandotte County Fairground until 1974.

On Sept. 19, 1929, he married Amelia D. Sewell. She died in 1964.

In 1975 he married Marie Pouppirt of Piper, and she died in 1997.

Baker had served as a 4-H leader and on the Piper school board and was a member of the Maywood Community Church.

Survivors include a sister, Ruth M. Schlosser, Overland Park; a son, Alfred E. Baker Jr., Leavenworth; four grandchildren, including Jon C. Baker, Winfield, and four great-grandchildren.

Doyle Demaree

ARKANSAS CITY - Doyle F. Demaree, 39, of Arkansas City, died May 31, 1999, in Kaw City, Okla.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Arkansas City's chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Demaree was born Oct. 19, 1959, to Delbert C. and Isabel (Lohkamp) Demaree. He attended Arkansas City schools and graduated from high school there in 1978.

Demaree was employed as a machine operator for Rubbermaid in Winfield for 10 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his mother, Isabel Demaree, Arkansas City; five brothers, Dale Demaree, Fort Worth, Texas, Don Demaree, Wichita, Doug Demaree, Arkansas City, Dennis Demaree, San Antonio, Texas, and Delbert Demaree, Winfield; and a sister, Debra Fox, Wichita.

Gladys Jones

LEON - Gladys I. Jones, 91, of Leon, died May 31, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Leon Christian Church with burial in Leon Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Central High School of Burden Scholarship Fund and Cookson Hills Ministries. Contributions can be made through Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado.

Born June 11, 1907, she was a daughter of Tom and Hattie (Hart) Thorne. On Aug. 2, 1925, she married Harold Jones at Emporia.

The Joneses moved to Leon in 1938, and she was a homemaker. She earlier taught in a country school and was a church organist for many years.

Jones was a member of the Leon Christian Church and a bridge club.

Her husband died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Larry Jones, Leon; three brothers, Gerald Thorne, Garden City, Alden Thorne, Bella Vista, Ark., and Maurice Thorne, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Ken Holloway

ARDMORE, Okla. - Gilbert Kenney Holloway Jr., 59, of Ardmore, formerly of Winfield, died May 31, 1999, of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Ardmore. The Rev. Ernest Maddon will officiate. Griffin-Kennedy-Watts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be sent to H.L. Snyder Memorial Research Foundation, 1407 Wheat Road, P.O. Box 745, Winfield, KS 67156.

Holloway was born Oct. 9, 1939, in Winfield, to Gilbert and Irene Holloway. On June 1, 1960, he married Ann Tracy at Hackney and moved to Ardmore in 1969 from Blackwell, Okla. He was owner/operator of Frontier Tank Inc. and a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Holloway, and three daughters, Tracy Ann Severs, Jennifer Lynn Campbell and Kenna Robyn Owens, all of Ardmore; his parents, Gilbert and Irene Holloway, Woody Creek, Colo.; five brothers, Jimmy Holloway, Arkansas City, Charles Holloway, Carbondale, Colo., Roy Holloway and David Holloway, both of Aspen, Colo., and Bobby Holloway, Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters, Louise Smith, Basalt, Colo., and Charlotte Anderson, Chippley, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Bertha Kollmorgen

CALDWELL - Bertha F. Kollmorgen, 91, of Caldwell, died June 1, 1999, in Anthony.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Caldwell City Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Cloyd will officiate. Elliott-Schaeffer Mortuary of Caldwell is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Wesleyan Church of Argonia and St. Paul Evangelical Church of Bluff City.

Kollmorgen was born Oct. 20, 1907, at Swanton, Neb., to Henry and Anna (Nitzel) Kollmorgen. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a brother, Arthur Kollmorgen, Caldwell; and two sisters, Anna Bouse, Anthony, and Martha Miller, Winfield.

Lloyd Morgan

PARSONS - Lloyd Morgan, 60, of Parsons, formerly of Arkansas City, died May 24, 1999, at Beverly Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburg.

Services were held at 3 p.m. May 26 in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Arkansas City. The Rev. Dean Lavell officiated. Spencer Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars provided military honors. Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Parsons was in charge of arrangements.

Morgan was born Nov. 26, 1938, in Arkansas City, to Frank and Emma (Hoyle) Morgan.

He worked as a psychologist in private practice and taught in public schools for several years. He also served as a missionary in Peru.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca (Muninger) Morgan, Parsons; two stepsons, Daniel Delich and Kenneth Delich, both of Independence; his father, Frank Morgan, Arkansas City; three sisters, Patricia McCutcheon, Winfield, Shirley Blankenship, Udall, and Alice Miles, Wichita; and three stepgrandchildren.

A daughter, Kim Morgan, preceded him in death.

Helen Roe

Services for Helen Germaine Roe, 67, who died May 28, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. June 2 in Highland Cemetery. The Revs. Bill Fulton and Earnest McClure officiated.

The music selection was "Amazing Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were John Elam, Charles Foster, Vern Hull, Terry Krueger, Mark Roe, Kirt Williams and Mike Wooddell.

A memorial has been established with Grace Episcopal Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Murray

ALTAMONT - Elmer Emery Murray, 92, of Altamont, died June 2, 1999, at Arkhaven Nursing Home in Altamont.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bath Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Murray was born March 28, 1907, in Dighton, to Clarence and Dora A. (Schrader) Murray. The family moved to the Altamont area when he was four years old.

On Dec. 12, 1929, he married Gladys Hugo in Oswego. She died March 16, 1990.

A self-employed farmer, Murray had lived on the same section of land for 85 years. He was also a carpenter for several years. He entered the nursing home three years ago.

Murray was a member of the First Christian Church in Altamont, had served on the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service board and received a conservation award in 1975.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Louise Adams, Parsons, and Stella Irene Hubbell, Winfield; a sister, Gladys Hearson, Parsons; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A son, Dwain Murray, preceded him in death.
