Alta Conwell
WELLINGTON - Alta E. Conwell, 78, retired auditor, of Wellington, died July 30, 1999, in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Oxford United Methodist Church. The Rev. Andy Torres will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home from 5 to 9 tonight.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Warren Park Fund in care of the funeral home.
Conwell was born July 31, 1920, to Chester and Clara (Rice) Rowe.
On May 25, 1941, she married Vernon Conwell in Newkirk, Okla.
She was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Vernon Conwell, Wellington; two sons, Rod Conwell, Wellington, and Mike Conwell, El Dorado; a sister, Louise Beach, Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
Mary Stiles
CEDAR VALE - Mary Hazel Stiles, 94, of Grenola, died July 30, 1999, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Grenola Christian Church. Pastor Wallace Wartick will officiate.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wamego City Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Grenola Christian Church. Contributions may be made at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Stiles was born Feb. 13, 1905, in Westphalia, to Isaiah Marion and Jessie May (Axtell) Watkins. The family moved to Elk County when she was a small child, and she attended school in Fairview, Grenola and Moline.
On April 6, 1927, she married Walter G. "Jack" Armer in Topeka. They lived in Wamego until moving to California in 1937. They made their home in Portland, Ore., during the early 1940s. In 1945, they returned to California where they remained until Mr. Armer's death in 1981.
Mrs. Armer moved to Arizona in 1982 and on July 10, 1982, she married Jeff Stiles in Chandler, Ariz. He died in November 1985. In 1990 Mrs. Stiles returned to Grenola to be near her family.
She joined the Grenola Christian Church when she was 13.
Survivors include her stepsons, Darrel Stiles, Chandler, Ariz., and Richard Stiles, California; a stepdaughter, Ann Blackwell, Apache Junction, Ariz.; a sister, Theresa Keplinger, Grenola; 10 stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
Lovina Hilfinger
Graveside services for Lovina W. Hilfinger, 83, who died July 22, 1916, were held at 10 a.m. July 30, 1999, at Oxford Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated.
Special vocal music was "Ave Maria."
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
John Stephens
Services for John James Stephens, 86, who died July 28, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. July 31, 1999, at the First Christian Church in Moline. The Rev. Ted Smith officiated. Burial was in Moline Cemetery.
Shay Watkins was the organist. Vocal music included "In the Garden" and "Irish Blessing" by Chord Authority and "Abide with Me" performed by James M. Stephens.
Honorary casket bearers were Mahlon Durbin, Dale Hamilton, Bob Kill, Lawrence Malone, Maurice Marion and Marvin Zimmers.
Casket bearers were Harry Stephens, Larry Stephens, Don Stephens, James M. Stephens, Craig Stephens, Clint Stephens, John Deege and Devin Duncan.
A memorial has been established with the Moline Senior Citizens Center.
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
Ruth Ann Hill
WILSEY - Ruth Ann Hill, 94, of Wilsey, formerly of Elk City, died July 30, 1999, at her daughter's home in Wilsey.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery
in Elk City.
Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard has charge of arrangements.
Hill was born Aug. 29, 1904, in Independence, to William Cullen and Adelaide May (Edwards) Bryant. She graduated from Elk City High School and grew to womanhood in the Elk City community.
After graduating from Pittsburg State Teachers College, she taught at several one-room county schools near Niotaze, Oak Valley and Elk City.
On June 30, 1930, she married Willis Kenneth "Hilly" Hill at Lyndon. They lived in Wichita until his retirement from the restaurant business. After retirement, they moved to Florida to manage apartment complexes in Melbourne and Pompano Beach.
They later moved back to Kansas where they lived in Howard to be near their daughter, Carol, and her family. In later years, Mrs. Hill returned to Elk City to be near family and friends. Mr. Hill died in 1977.
Mrs. Hill devoted many hours to genealogy studies of her family and crocheting afghans for family members.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Clum, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Carol Craney, Wilsey; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Phyllis Tulk
DENTON, Texas - Phyllis E. Tulk, 75, of Denton, Texas, formerly of Burden, died July 31, 1999.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Corinth Shiloh Cemetery
in Corinth, Texas. The Rev. Kim Broadstreet will officiate.
Friends may call at Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Inc., Denton, from 7 to 8 tonight.
Memorials may be made to Ann's Haven Hospice.
Tulk was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Burden, to Alpheus and Edna (Gatton) Putman.
She married Francis W. Tulk. He preceded her in death.
A teller supervisor at Exchange Bank & Trust, she was a member of the Baptist Church and R.C. Buckner Eastern Star Lodge.
Survivors include a son, Gary Tulk, Rockwall, Texas; a daughter, Judy Ann Tulk, Denton, Texas; a brother, Herchel Putman, Wichita; five grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
Helen Williams
PAWHUSKA, Okla. - Helen U. Butler Williams, 75, former Ponca City-area resident, died Aug. 1, 1999, at her home in Pawhuska.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Dennis Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 Thursday night.

Williams was born May 12, 1924, in New Albany, Miss., to Felix and Nettie B. (Langford) Denson. She was raised and educated in the Helena, Ark., area.
On June 6, 1939, she married Howard Butler in Washunga, Okla. They moved to Arkansas City in 1941. Mr. Butler preceded her in death
On Nov. 25, 1966, she married Bob Williams in Arkansas City. They moved to Grainola, Okla., shortly after their marriage. Mr. Williams, too, preceded Mrs. Williams in death. In 1996 she went to lived with her daughter, Christine, in Pawhuska.
A homemaker, Mrs. Williams spent many years caring for her mother and daughter, Alice. A gardener, she also worked in her church and provided transportation for others so they might attend church as well.
Survivors include a son, Melvin Ray Butler, Pawhuska; two daughters, Christine Eggleston, Pawhuska, and Charlotte Jordan, Newkirk; a stepson, Greg Williams; two half-brothers, T.C. Denson and Vernon Denson; a half-sister, Pearlie May Denson Smith; a stepsister, Birdie Branch; 10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Alice, preceded her in death.
Lauretta McCall
LITTLE TORCH KEY, Fla. - Lauretta A. McCall, 81, homemaker, of Little Torch Key, Fla., former longtime resident of Winfield, died July 31, 1999, at her home in Little Torch Key.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery
in Winfield.
McCall was born May 15, 1918, in New Milford, Pa., to Harry Corysen and Lila May Decker-Corysen.
On May 15, 1938, she married Wendell L. McCall in Wildwood, Fla. He died July 2, 1983.
Mrs. McCall lived at 2001 Warren in Winfield for 56 years. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and the American Kennel Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Lila Dunn, Little Torch Key, Fla., Lauretta Maxwell, Houston, Texas, and Pat Enderlin, British Columbia, Canada; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Bill Orr
BUFFALO, Okla. - Wycoff A. "Bill" Orr, 92, of Buffalo, Okla., former longtime resident of Winfield, died Aug. 3, 1999, in Buffalo.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Buffalo. Burial will be in High Point Cemetery
in Buffalo.

Orr was born Nov. 13, 1906, on a farm near Hampton, to George Henry and Charlotte (Sherwood) Orr. He was educated in Larned and Jetmore schools and began farming with his father at a young age.
In 1927 he moved to Oklahoma where he lived in Selman and later in Buffalo. He was employed in a service station for several years.
On Sept. 8, 1929, he married Cora Elizabeth Howard in Buffalo where they lived for nine years. During the Great Depression, Orr was employed in construction work in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.
The Orrs moved to Winfield in 1938, and he began his own construction business, Orr Dozer Service, in 1954. He was involved in many construction projects throughout Kansas and Oklahoma before his retirement in 1972.
The Orrs celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in September 1995. Mrs. Orr died on April 10, 1996.
A longtime member of First Christian Church in Winfield where he had served in nearly every church office, Mr. Orr was formerly affiliated with the Kansas & Oklahoma Steam & Gas Engine Association. He also delivered Meals On Wheels.
Survivors include a son, Wayne A. Orr, Winfield; and two grandchildren.
