Viola McConnell
Viola McConnell, 88, of 610 E. 16th, Winfield, died Aug. 18, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
McConnell was born May 3, 1911, in Russell, to Francis E. "Frank" and Ruth Catherine (Reichard) Gee. She graduated from Russell High School and worked in the register of deed's office in Russell.
On Dec. 17, 1930, she married Ray Albert McConnell in Lyons. He died July 28, 1993.
The McConnells moved to Winfield in 1936, and she worked in the laundry and cafeteria at William Newton Memorial Hospital for more than 29 years.
She was a longtime blood donor.
Survivors include a son, Robert McConnell, St. Louis; three daughters, Fern Smith and Donna White, both of Wichita, and May Bennett, Winfield; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Anna Garrett
HOWARD - Anna Mae Garrett, 91, longtime resident of Howard, died Aug. 19, 1999, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Revs. Marty Dewitt, Kibum Kim, Don Harper and Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Garrett was born Aug. 26, 1907, in Jerico, Texas, to Frank William and Pearlia Lonetta (Perkins) Bales. At an early age, she moved with her family to a farm near Grenola.
After graduating from Grenola High School, she completed normal training and was a teacher at several rural Elk County schools. She stopped teaching to care for her ailing mother.
On Dec. 17, 1938, she married John Clarence Garrett in Howard. He died in 1974.
Garrett was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a member and served two years as president of Carter-Rader Post 149 American Legion Auxiliary of Howard. She was a former member of the Loyal Lima Extension Homemakers Unit.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Hopwood, Gainesville, Ga., and Dorothy Browder, Gordon, Neb.; a sister, Gladys Ingle, Howard; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Dorothy Watson
ARKANSAS CITY - Dorothy Crawford Watson, 72, of Arkansas City, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 20, 1999.
Survivors include her husband, Elder John Watson, Arkansas City.
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home will announce arrangements.
Zelma Weickert
Zelma G. Weickert, 96, of Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died Aug. 19, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Wichita Park Cemetery
in Wichita.
A memorial has been established with the Cumbernauld Village Van Fund.
Weickert was born July 12, 1903, in Missouri. She was raised in the Winfield area and attended school here.
In 1924 she married Bill Wilson who died in 1947.
She married Hershel Holman in 1949, and he died in 1951.
In 1964 she married Fred Weickert who died in 1995.
Weickert worked in the fur department of Innes Department Store in Wichita until her retirement as department manager in 1966. The Weickerts moved to Bella Vista, Ark., and lived there until 1986 when they moved to Cumbernauld Village.
Weickert had been active in the Pilot Club, American Red Cross and Order of Eastern Star, all in Wichita.
Survivors include a stepson, Glenn Holman, Bella Vista, Ark.; two stepdaughters, Jill Bostwick, Benton, and Phyllis Walters, Springdale, Ark.; a sister, Leoma Gay, Winfield; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Jean Hinegardner
Jean Hinegardner, 73, of 620 E. 12th, Winfield, died Aug. 19, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

HineGardner was born July 2, 1926, in Winfield, to Leslie James and Maude Irene (Swasey) McAlister. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1944.
Following graduation she worked at Bird Rexall Drug Store and later at Kroger and Fry grocery stores, all in Winfield.
On April 2, 1950, she married Nuel J. HineGardner in Emporia. They resided in Winfield throughout their 49 years of marriage.
A homemaker and lifelong resident of Winfield, HineGardner owned and operated the Candle Cupboard in her home, creating and selling candles during the 1960s and 1970s. She was one of the original vendors at the Walnut Valley Festival.
HineGardner was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Nuel Hinegardner, Winfield; two sons, James E. Hinegardner, Topeka, and Craig S. Hinegardner, Winfield; a daughter, Marcia N. Larsen, Winfield; a brother, Ted McAlister, Denver; a sister, Elaine Goshorn, Provo, Utah; and seven grandchildren.
Billy Adams
OVERTON, Neb. - Billy C. Adams, 69, of Overton, died Aug. 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington, Neb. The Rev. Donald Buhrman will officiate. Burial with military honors will take place in St. Ann's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m Monday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with a wake service that same evening at 7.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church, the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
Adams was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Moline, to James and Alice (Anderson) Adams. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1948.
On June 10, 1953, he married Rita Tingelhoff in Lexington.
Adams served in the United States Air Force for 23 years. After he retired, he worked at Sperry New Holland in Lexington for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Adams, Overton; a son, Thomas Adams, Milden Hall, England; four daughters, Marietta Adams, Henderson, Neb., Jolene Fischer, Cambridge, Neb., Norma Yeutter, Cozad, Neb., and Kellie Anderson, North Platte, Neb.; three brothers, Homer "Bud" Adams, Winfield, Harold "James" Adams, Superior, Neb., and Larry Adams, Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Jeanette Dorner, Omaha, Neb.; and nine grandchildren.
Three daughters, Marie Kathleen Adams, Mary Elizabeth Adams and Connie Joann Adams, preceded him in death.
Dorothy Watson
ARKANSAS CITY - Dorothy M. Watson, 72, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 20, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Church of God In Christ in Coffeyville. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery
in Arkansas City.

Watson was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Winfield, to Claude and Beulah (Workuff) Crawford. She was raised and educated in Winfield.
On Oct. 10, 1943, she married John Henry Watson in Arkansas City. For the last 32 years they made their home between Arkansas City and Coffeyville.
A homemaker, Mrs. Watson was a member of the Church of God In Christ.
Survivors include her husband, John Watson, and two sons, Bruce Watson and Edward Watson, all of Arkansas City; three daughters, Maredith Watson and Connie Rowe, both of Arkansas City, and Brenda Hall, McPherson; an adopted daughter, Delphia Jennings, Arkansas City; her mother, Beulah Davis, Wichita; four brothers, James Crawford, Claude Crawford Jr., and Albert Crawford, all of Winfield, and William Crawford, Panola, Calif.; two sisters, Alta Reynolds and Alma Watson, and two foster sisters, Altheria Usher and Velma Cook, all of Winfield; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ila Beaumont
HOWARD - Ila Irene Beaumont, 82, of Howard, died Aug. 20, 1999, at her home.
Services were to be held at 2 p.m today at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Terry Buchanan officiated. Burial was in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. of Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Beaumont was born Aug. 1, 1917, on a farm west of Howard, to Bert Eugene and Rosa Etta (Shipman) Beaumont. She attended Highland rural school and grew up west of Howard.
Beaumont took care of her parents during their later years. After her mother's death in 1979, she moved to Howard.
She was a longtime member of the Jolly Janes Club of Howard and the Howard Wesleyan Church. In recent years she attended Severy Nazarene Church.
Survivors include her sister, Alice Light, Howard, and several nieces and nephews.
Jimmie Green
Jimmie Green, 49, a resident of Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield, died Aug. 20, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Oilton, Okla., cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established for the benefit of his family. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Green was born March 25, 1950, in Cushing, Okla., to James D. and JoAnn (Casey) Green. Following graduation from Argonia High School, he entered the military and served during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1972.
In 1975 he married Penny Haskins at the Church of God in Wellington.
Green was employed as a cabinetmaker for several years. He moved to Oklahoma where he worked for Southwest Tube Co. as a machinist for a number of years before returning to Winfield.
Survivors include his wife, Penny Green, Wellington; a son, Casey Green, Wichita; two daughters, Stacy Green and Tracy Green, both of Arkansas City; his father and stepmother, James D. and Shirley Green of Wellington; two stepbrothers, Donnie Quinn, Drumright, Okla., and Jeffrey Reynolds, Wellington; a stepsister, Wanda Green, Wellington; and five grandchildren.
