John Sweetland
John W. Sweetland, 75, of 1709 Mound, Winfield, died Aug. 31, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Sweetland was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Wichita, to Zephyr "Speck" and Phoebe (Calvin) Sweetland. He was raised and educated in the Towanda area and graduated from Towanda High School in 1941.
A veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1946 with the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist in the European and African theaters.
On Oct. 27, 1942, he married Melba L. Meyer in Yuma, Ariz. They moved to Winfield in 1950.
Sweetland was employed by Hauber Implement Co. in Winfield. In 1967 he and Floyd Hinson co-founded Sweetland Hinson Equipment Co. on West Ninth. Sweetland retired as president of Sweetland Hinson in 1988.
The Sweetlands resided on Mound for nearly 50 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a longtime member of American Legion Post 10.
Survivors include his wife, Melba Sweetland, Winfield; a son, Dennis Sweetland, Arlington, Texas; two daughters, Jonette Hunter, Sedalia, Mo., and Jill Greeson, Topeka; a brother, Frosty Sweetland, Farmington, N.M.; two sisters, Juanita Sumpter, Bartlesville, and Melba "Red" Shinn, Anchorage, Alaska; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Ramona Engel
CLIFTON, Colo. - Ramona Luane Corter Engel, 32, of Clifton, died Aug. 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in McLean Funeral Home Chapel in Palisade, Colo. Cremation has taken place.
Engel was born Oct. 22, 1966, in Winfield, to Morris Corter and Phyllis (Venn) Morris.
She was a school nurse at Mesa View Elementary School.
She married Bruce A. Engel on Feb. 19, 1996, in Castle Rock, Colo.
Survivors include her husband, Bruce Engel, Clifton; a son, Phillip Hunnicutt, Monument, Colo.; two daughters, Heather Hunnicutt and Amber Hunnicutt, both of Clifton; her father, Morris Corter, Beatrice, Neb.; her mother, Phyllis Venn Morris, Ripley, Okla.; three brothers, Harvey "Bucky" Corter, Ripley, Okla.; Morris Corter Jr., Merton, and Kerry Corter, Winfield; and three sisters, Regina Williams, Ripley, Okla., Rebecca Pettijohn, Mount Laurel, N.J., and Renae Reeves, Buckley, Wash.
Patricia Tyler
ARKANSAS CITY - Patricia Laverne Lawson Tyler, 69, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 2, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church. Pastor Ted Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
A memorial has been established with Cowley County Community College. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Tyler was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Cedar Vale, to Clarence Hobart and Avis Irene (Drury) Sheldon. She was raised and educated in Wellington and Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1947. She attended Arkansas City Junior College from 1947 to 1949, then taught in country schools in south-central Kansas until 1952.
On April, 7, 1950, she married Robert "Bob" Eldon Lawson. They resided in LaCygne and Sedan before moving to Arkansas City in 1960.
Tyler volunteered at Lincoln Elementary School as a reading tutor. She was employed as a secretary and later as director of economic development at Cowley County Community College from 1979 to 1991.
Mr. Lawson died in 1985.
On Feb. 10, 1989, she married Thomas Tyler in Arkansas City. They were active in miniature train clubs and frequently traveled to reunions of the World War II Eighth Air Force bomber group.
Tyler was a member of Hackney Community Baptist Church. She had previously been a member of Central Christian Church and a home demonstration unit.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Tyler, and a son, Clinton Lawson, both of Arkansas City; two daughters, Enid Chandler, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Vivian Velasquez, Arkansas City; two brothers, Bill Sheldon, Arkansas City, and Tom Sheldon, Mulvane; a sister, Juanita March, Newton; two stepsons, Steven Tyler and Keith Tyler, both of Arkansas City; four grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
A stepson, Wayne Tyler, preceded her in death.
Harold Thompson
GRENOLA - Services for Harold H. Thompson, 88, who died Aug. 29, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 in Green Lawn Cemetery
at Grenola. The Rev. Wallace Wartick officiated.
"Beyond the Sunset" and "Rock of Ages" were presented by Jana Perrigo.
Honorary casket bearers were Jim Owens, Alan Rock, Corbin Thompson, Jerrid Thompson, Mark Thompson and Terry Timblin.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
J.C. Witter
NEWTON - J.C. Witter, Newton, died Sept. 2, 1999 at Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Newton.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Friendly Acres Retirement Community Chapel. Burial will be at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Peterson Funeral Home, Newton.
Memorials have been established with Southwestern College, Trinity Heights United Methodist Church and Friendly Acres Retirement Community. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Witter was born May 6, 1907, in Salem, Ind., to Edgar Curtis and Maggie Mae Baynes Witter.
On Nov. 21, 1931, he married Thelma Monzingo at Great Bend. She survives.
Witter served in several administrative positions at Southwestern College for more than 20 years. He has been a resident of Newton for more than 20 years.
He was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton.
Survivors include his wife, Newton; a daughter, Maridene Akin, Crested Butte, Colo.; a sister, Lillian Epley; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William C. Witter; and a sister, Lois Grey.
Kathleen Stout
ATLANTA - Kathleen E. Stout, 78, longtime Atlanta resident, died Sept. 2, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Stout was born July 16, 1921, near Horton, to John F. and Hattie A. (McKeon) Gerber. She moved to northern Cowley County as a child with her family during the early 1930s and attended Atlanta schools.
A 1940 graduate of Atlanta High School, she married Richard Eugene Stout on Jan. 11, 1941, in Horton. They lived in the Atlanta community throughout their 52 years of marriage. He died May 23, 1993.
A homemaker and Atlanta resident for almost 70 years, Stout was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, John L. Stout, Atlanta, and Richard Stout Jr., Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters, Janice Campbell and Diana Shklar, both of Wamego; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
An infant son, George Frederick Stout, preceded her in death.

Services for John William Sweetland, 75, who died Aug. 31, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 3 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Special music was "The Navy Hymn," "Softly and Tenderly," "The Lord's Prayer" and "It Is Well With My Soul."
Honorary casket bearers were Lee Davis and Lester Lehmann. Casket bearers were Dale Bartel, Don Kline, Kenny Metz, Don Miles, Lawrence Miller and Bill Thornton.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the First Christian Church.
Helen Langley
MULVANE - Helen D. Langley, 82, formerly of Arkansas City, died Sept. 1, 1999, at Villa Maria Care Home in Mulvane.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Revs. Rick Williams and Alfonso Solis will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Villa Maria Care Home in Mulvane. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Langley was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Salisaw, Okla., to Parris and Effie (McKinney) Dooley. She attended rural Ralston, Okla., schools.
On April 11, 1933, she married Howard L. Langley in Pawnee, Okla. They made their home in Ralston from 1933 trough 1943 and lived in Arkansas City from 1944 to 1995. Mr. Langley preceded his wife in death.
Mrs. Langley was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of UTU, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose Lodge. She was also a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Arkansas City.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail Ammerman, Derby; two sons, Leslie Langley, Wellington, and Glenn Langley, Palm Harbor, Fla.; a brother, Ralph Dooley, Ralston, Okla.; four sisters, Hazel Kay, Billings, Okla., Maggie Etheridge, Skitook, Okla., Billie Gray, Arkansas City, and Ann Brien, Pawnee, Okla.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Everett Moore
LONGTON - Everett L. Moore, 81, retired president of the Home State Bank of Longton, died Sept. 3, 1999, at his home in Longton.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Longton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Nichols will officiate. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery. The Carson Masonic Lodge of Elk City will perform Masonic graveside services.
A memorial has been established with the Longton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Moore was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Hale, to John Leroy and Audrey Ellen (Coffey) Moore. He graduated from Longton High School and attended banking school.
On June 15, 1940, he married Ardis Nadine Cox at her parents' home in Elk County. To this union were born a daughter, Kathy Ann, and a son, Kim. Kathy Ann Moore preceded her father in death.
A lifelong resident of Longton, he was a longtime member of the Longton United Methodist Church and was very active in the community, holding memberships in the Carson Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Ladona Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, York Rite Consistory-Keystone Chapter and the Carter-Rader American Legion Post.
He served as state representative for the 76th District and treasurer of the Longton Cemetery
Board and was a member of the Longton Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Elk County Free Fair Board and the Elk Valley School Board.
Survivors include his wife, Ardis Moore, Longton; a son, Kim Moore, Hutchinson; and three grandchildren.
