Danny Smith
Services for Danny R. Smith, 62, who died Oct. 5, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 in the First Baptist Church in Winfield. The Revs. Ted Brown and John Stone officiated.
Music selections were "Empty Places" by Jerry Hall, "The Lord's Prayer" by Dennis Davis and "Just As I Am." Donna Reynolds was the pianist, and Connie Haunschild was the organist.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery
with military rites conducted by Fort Riley Headquarters Co. 1st Battalion.
Casket bearers were David Gowdy, Richard Brock, Joshua Gowdy, Jarret Gowdy, John Rush and Dean Decoudres.
Honorary casketbearers were Delmont Miller, John Nation, Merle Gifford, Bill Mayfield, Earl Gilley, Stanley DeLano, Calvin Berry, Larry Smith, Keith Lawless, Bill Larkin, Rick Reynolds and Keith Leake.
Memorials have been established with William Newton Memorial Hospital, Hackney Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
John McKay
ARKANSAS CITY - John A. McKay, 65, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 14, 1999, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. James Watson Jr. will officiate. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
McKay was born May 7, 1934, in Arkansas City to Douglas Ernest and Cleo N. (Fitzpatrick) McKay. He married Willene Gipson in 1956 in Denver where they lived until moving to Arkansas City in 1962.
He married Dorothy Jean Jones on Dec. 6, 1985, in Arkansas City. She died Dec. 9, 1995.
McKay had worked as a lineman for the Santa Fe railroad.
Survivors include four sons, Bennie R. McKay, Wichita, John A. McKay Jr. and Pernell McKay, both of Dallas, and Nathaniel McKay, Denver; two sisters, Ethelyn Banning, Arkansas City, and Dolly Ann Hoffman, Cleveland, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.
Margaret Miller
HOWARD - Margaret Jane Miller, 93, a longtime Howard resident, died Oct. 15, 1999, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate, and burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Miller was born Aug. 9, 1906 on a farm north of Howard to Orval Adam and Lydia Edna (Criger) Clum. When she was a small child, the family moved to Tripp County, S.D., where they homesteaded.
She attended school in homes of homesteaders in South Dakota before returning to Elk County. Miller graduated from Howard High School in 1924. She completed normal training and taught two years in rural Elk County schools.
On Dec. 24, 1925, she married Glenn Orval Miller in Elk County. The Millers lived on a farm north of Howard for 55 years. Her husband died May 13, 1980.
Miller was a member of the Howard United Methodist Church, a past president of United Methodist Women and a longtime member of Howard Willing Workers. She served several years on the Howard Library Board.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Buck, Severy; two sons, Ted Miller and Dan Miller, both of Howard; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Robert Johnson
ARKANSAS CITY - Robert Leroy Johnson, 64, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 17, 1999, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hawks Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Johnson was born May 26, 1935, in Winfield to Leroy Rufus and Lillian (Wilcoxen) Johnson. He was raised in the Leon area and graduated from Leon High School.
Johnson worked in oil fields and was a truck driver before going to work as a salesman for PictureLand Photo Studios, traveling to Wal-Mart stores across the country.
Johnson lived in Newton, El Dorado and Winfield before moving to Arkansas City three years ago.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Johnson, Winfield, and Robert Johnson, Oxford; one daughter, Lou Moore, Winfield, his companion, Judy Ochs, Arkansas City; a brother, Jack Johnson, Rockaway Beach, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.
Nina Caldwell
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nina M. Caldwell, 89, formerly of DeSoto, died Oct. 15, 1999, in Kansas City, Mo.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the DeSoto Baptist Church. Interment will be in DeSoto Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, or from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
A memorial scholarship fund has been established, and contributions can be made at the funeral home.
Caldwell was born Oct. 1, 1910, in DeSoto to Benjamin Hubbard and Emma Mae (Moore) Smith. She graduated from DeSoto High School and normal school and taught school at Camp Branch.
On April 23, 1930, she married William F. Caldwell in Olathe. They owned and operated Caldwell Farms for 50 years and won many ribbons for watermelons and pumpkins at the local fair. In 1993, Caldwell became the "Pumpkin Lady" to thousands of school children who visited her farm yearly.
Caldwell attended the United Methodist Church in DeSoto and was a former member of a home demonstration unit and Farm Bureau.
She lived in DeSoto for 83 years before moving six years ago to live with her daughter in Kansas City.
Her husband died in 1981.
Survivors include daughters Frances Semler, Kansas City, and Billie Wells, Winfield; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Esther Glass
DEXTER - Services for Esther J. Glass, 85, who died Oct. 13, 1999, were held 2 p.m. Oct. 16 in Dexter Cemetery. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated.
Vocal music selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Jim Watson
Services for Ralph James "Jim" Watson, 88, who died Oct. 11, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 in the First United Methodist Church. Interment was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated.
Vocal music selections included "Sweet Hour of Prayer Medley," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The Lord's Prayer," all presented by Sharon Stuemky.
Casket bearers were Bill and Jerry Drennan, Bill Larkin, Leonard and Newton Richardson and Bill Wakefield. Dr. Richard Warren was an honorary casket bearer.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Shorty Bonfy
RALSTON, Okla. - Services for Quay T. "Shorty" Bonfy, 92, who died Oct. 9, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at the First Baptist Church in Ralston. Pastor Jason Harris officiated. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery
in Ralston.
Music selections included "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" presented by Pastor Harris. Laura Lea Corley was the organist.
Casketbearers were his grandchildren, Martin Lee, Gloria Ann, Randall Jay, Paul S., Dane R., Devon J. and Robyn R. Bonfy and Joe, Jason and Allison Isaacson.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Calder Bonfy Memorial Fund at Cowley County Community College.
Miles Funeral Service of Winfield was in charge of arrangements.
Herbert Hawk
Services for Herbert C. Hawk Jr., who died Oct. 12, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 18 at the First Christian Church. Interment was in Highland Cemetery.
Father John Robert Metzinger and the Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Cheryl Lenkowsky was the organist, and Wanda Schwarz was the soloist.
Casket bearers were Roger Marvel, Robert Hertweck, Robert Metzinger, Richard Brown, Bill Adams and John Blumberg. Honorary casket bearers were Ray Lawson, Keith Buchele, James Coulter, Bill Shores, Leonard Liermann and Lucien Barbour.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Marcie Wrench
WICHITA - Marcella D. "Marcie" Wrench, 73, of Wichita, died Oct. 18, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Broadway Mortuary Chapel, 1147 S. Broadway, and 12:30 p.m. in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington.
Wrench was a graphics illustrator for Boeing before her retirement.
Survivors include a son, Terry Wrench, Newton; a daughter, Rosalyn Barney, Winfield; a sister, Myrtle Mae Jarboe, Oxford; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Everett Dobbins
Everett Paul Dobbins, 89, of 1018 Ann, Winfield, died Oct. 18, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service with burial in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Dobbins was born June 13, 1910, in Minco, Okla., to Hugh Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth Dobbins. He attended Minco schools.
On April 20, 1937, he married Dorothy Hagan in Winfield, and they resided in Winfield. Dobbins was an independent carpenter and helped with construction at Strother Field during World War II. His various construction jobs included missile silos, bridges and Winfield High School.
Dobbins was a member of the First Baptist Church and Local Carpenters Union 201.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dobbins, Winfield; two sons, Loyd Dobbins, Yukon, Okla., and Roger Dobbins, Winfield; a brother, Tommy Loyd Dobbins, Longview, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
