Rita Massey

Rita Massey, 59, of 416 E. 12th, Winfield, died Jan. 2, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

The family will receive visitors at Miles Funeral Service from 6 to 8 tonight. Following cremation, there will be a private inurnment service.

A memorial has been established with the American Arthritis Foundation. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Massey was born Feb. 1, 1940, in East St. Louis, Ill., to David and Cecilia (Weigert) McCann. She attended a Catholic school in East St. Louis and graduated in 1957. She was a housekeeper for many years.

Survivors include four daughters, Judith Sherard, Wichita, Valarie Miller and Denise Massey-Fortney, both of Winfield, and Christina Pruitt, Litchfield, Ill.; a brother, William McCann, Marshall, Mo.; a sister, JoAnn Palmer, Fairview Heights, Ill.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles K. Massey.

Harry Shetlar

Harry L. Shetlar Jr., 68, of 1704 E. 20th, Winfield, died Jan. 1, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

His service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and before service time Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with Southwestern College and Grace Episcopal Church.

Shetlar was born Sept. 4, 1931, in Conway Springs, to Harry L. and Lillian (Booth) Shetlar. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School, attended Southwestern College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of Kansas in 1957.

On Aug. 4, 1962, he married Sharon Skinner in Burden. They lived in Dodge City before moving to Winfield in 1966.

Shetlar was a certified public accountant with Edward B. Stephenson & Co. until his retirement in 1995. After retiring he volunteered at Whittier Elementary School.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Shetlar, Winfield; two sons, Robert Shetlar, Statesboro, Ga., and Aaron Shetlar, Jersey City, N.J.; a daughter, Shannon Ryan, Ayer's Cliff, Quebec, Canada; two brothers, Paul Shetlar, Wichita, and Richard Shetlar, Richland, Wash.; a sister, Fern Grabil, Lincoln, Neb.; and one granddaughter.

Margaret Snell

Margaret Theresa Snell, 92, of Winfield, died Jan. 1, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village.

The Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials have been established with Holy Name Catholic Church and Good Samaritan Village.

Snell was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Winfield to Henry and Margaret (Rausch) Drauden. On April 30, 1927, she married Walter Snell. He preceded her in death in 1993.

Snell was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, had been active in the altar society and sewing circle and had been a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader.

Survivor include three sons, Alfred Snell, Rose Hill, Virgil Snell, Overland Park and Wendell Snell, Amston, Conn.; two daughters, Janet Hoheisel, Wichita, and Karen Snell, Winfield; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lee Wheeler

OXFORD - Jessie "Lee" Wheeler, 92, of Oxford, died Jan. 1, 2000, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Oxford First Responders. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Wheeler was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Western Grove, Ark., to Fountain C. and Cornelia (Elam) Jones. She married Carl Lee Wheeler on Dec. 23, 1925, in Western Grove.

They lived in Ada, Okla., for 22 years before moving to Oxford in 1975. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Bill Wheeler, Oxford; a daughter, Jane Krafels, Hutchinson; seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Her husband died Feb. 23, 1996.

Allen Arthur

CORONADO, Calif. - Allen A. Arthur, 79, died Dec. 5, 1999, in Coronado.

Arthur was born Jan. 24, 1920, to Louis R. and Josephine (Allen) Divilbiss. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1937. After serving in the U.S. Army, he graduated from the University of Southern California.

Arthur worked in the field of public relations for many years.

He is survived by a brother, James Divilbiss, Champaign, Ill.

Ralph Fry

Ralph Dean Fry, 87, of 1620 Fuller, Winfield, died Jan. 3, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and the Winfield Public Library. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Fry was born Aug. 16, 1912, at Tisdale, to Frank Wesley and Josephine (Shannon) Fry. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1931 and attended Southwestern College.

As a youth he worked in oil fields. During World War II, he was in a construction battalion and served in the South Pacific for 18 months.

On March 24, 1951, he married Janeanne Cardwell Nichols in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield until 1953 when they moved to Tripoli, Libya.

Fry was employed by the United States Foreign Service as a drilling superintendent and was also in charge of teaching the local people water exploration, development and purification. His career took the family to Egypt and Laos. He also spent two and a half years in Vietnam. While working in Egypt, he headed a drilling operation that uncovered water 3,000 feet into the Sahara Desert.

After his retirement in 1975 the Frys returned to Winfield where he operated Fry Pump Service and worked several years for Reynolds Casing Crew.

Fry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544, Winfield Masonic Blue Lodge 110 and Cowley County Shrine Club.

Survivors include his wife, Janeanne Fry, a son, Frank Robert Fry, and three daughters, Catherine Shiever, Dorothy Potter and Linda Hanshaw, all of Winfield; two brothers, Lowell L. Fry, Augusta, and Milton S. Fry, Hutchinson; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Nellie Matoy-Bowser

ARKANSAS CITY - Nellie Matoy-Bowser, 86, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 30, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Patricia Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Springside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Matoy-Bowser was born Nov. 11, 1913, in Texas.

On March 18, 1947, she married Boyd Francis Matoy in Winfield, and they lived in Arkansas City. He died July 8, 1992.

On March 29, 1995, she married Cleo Frederick Bowser in Newkirk where they lived until moving to Arkansas City in the fall of 1998. He died April 11, 1999.

Matoy-Bowser had been a member of the Women of the Moose for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Orlene Schoonover, Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Juanita Bechtold, Morrison, Okla., and Betty Smith, Arkansas City; three grandsons, four great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

Two sons, George Christian and Dick Christian, preceded her in death.

Christene Miller

SOUTH COFFEYVILLE, Okla. - Christene "Chris" B. Miller, 77, of South Coffeyville, died Jan. 2, 2000, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Graves Funeral Home Chapel in Coffeyville. The Rev. Gary Stevens will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview City Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Amazing Grace Chapel. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Miller was born Sept. 9, 1922, in South Coffeyville, to Oscar and Pearl (Smith) McClure. She lived most of her life in the South Coffeyville area.

On Oct, 9, 1952, she married William I. Miller in Bentonville, Ark.

An artist, she was also a member of Amazing Grace Chapel.

Survivors include her husband, William Miller, South Coffeyville; two daughters, Charlotte Wilson, Winfield, and Phyllis Jean Hilger, Wichita; two brothers, Bill McClure, Coffeyville, and Kenneth McClure, South Coffeyville; four sisters, Nellie Oneslager and Maxine Wilson, both of South Coffeyville, and Beulah Wisley and Jean Howard, both of Coffeyville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Betty Poovey

OXFORD - Betty Jean Poovey, 74, formerly of Oxford, died Jan. 2, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 8:30 a.m. until noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Good Samaritan Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Poovey was born July 23, 1925, in Oxford, to Claude and Clara (Barnes) Alley. She was raised and educated in Oxford.

In 1943 she married Carroll Wendell Poovey. They lived west of Oxford before moving into town where she lived until moving to Good Samaritan Village in 1994. Her husband died Nov. 19, 1996.

Survivors include a son, Tim Poovey, Grapevine, Texas; four daughters, Trecia Delp, Winfield, Marcia Lopeman, Altoona, Debbie Weller, Lindsborg, and Becky Eklund, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
